he founding fathers made a plan, and we got Longview. This town, sitting where three rivers converge and feed into the Pacific ocean, is a planned city whose history began in the roaring 20s and can be traced back to Kansas City, Missouri. It is the first, and possibly only city of its magnitude that had each street name and sidewalk planned before construction began. And, it is the city where planning, determination, and community growth is still happening.

he area was planned with the vision of a population of 75,000 people, they are currently about half that. The city Chamber of Commerce recognizes that a vibrant downtown area is vital to the growth and livability of a vibrant city. A community calendar is full of events that are designed to bring people together. There is a Moonlight Run, Friends of the Library Book Sale, Kids Trick or Treating on Commerce featuring special merchant sales throughout the day, plus more events throughout the winter season. If you have not been to Commerce Ave during the holiday season, you really must go check it out! Having grown up in the area, it is truly a magical experience.

he city is experiencing a bit of a revitalization due to people flooding the area. Why are people moving in? Many reasons, one being affordability. The cost of living there is lower than other areas. The median home price in Cowlitz County is $245,000, whereas the median home price in Clark County is hovering around $390,000! There simply are very few homes available for first time home buyers in other markets. This means that many are making the trip to Longview, which they see as the beginning of a trending boom market.

There is a buzz starting by people who are moving to the area to start new businesses.

he area has a solid history of international corporations and small businesses working together. I have affinity for the Commerce area as it is where my own mother bought a small craft shop and turned it into a prosperous business with a deli and bakery. The area is attractive to people of all ages, they emphasize education, creativity, business development, and they care for their natural resources. Though not without its problems, the residents pride themselves on being good stewards of the surrounding beauty and the potential that the energy of people relocating to the area is bringing.
