Columbia River Renaissance Trail Still waters run deep, especially along the waters of the Columbia River which runs so smoothly that one never suspects how deep and swift it is. The Columbia River Renaissance Trail, a tranquil paved and easy walkway, runs from Wintler Park to Tidewater Cove at the east end, westward along the north bank of the river. Wintler Park, just east of the cove, has 12.5 acres of parkland with picnic tables and a sandy beach. An excellent viewpoint for Mt Hood’s snowy top, this park is sits only half a mile to from the viewing tower at the Kaiser Shipyard Memorial at Ryan Point. Another option is to If you bypass the turnoff for the viewing tower and continue along the sidewalk skirting an Industrial area, you will come and coming eventually to the Columbia Way Neighborhood where McMenamins and Beaches restaurants are located riverside. Across the parking lot is the Savona Coffee House, a comfortable cafe where you can have coffee, check your email and order a salad, a sandwich or ice cream. A favorite part of the trail runs from this Columbia Way Neighborhood west to Joe’s Crab Shack and WhoSong and Larry’s Restaurant and Cantina, about a mile further along. This mile long portion of the path is smooth and paved and runs along by the river’s bank. It affords excellent views of old growth trees, birds and squirrels, and the sparkling water of the Columbia. Sailboats and barges and the docks, houseboats, condos and shops at Hayden Island across the river in Oregon, peak through the trees. Though Columbia Way runs to your right along the path, the path it’s a is peaceful and lovely stroll. There is a park at the end just before the restaurant parking lots with benches, picnic tables, a pebbly beach and plenty of parking. There are two hotels near the river in this vicinity, both on the footpath and easy to reach. The Home Suites Hotel by Hilton is in the Columbia Way Neighborhood and the Red Lion Vancouver Hotel at the Quay is just a short walk past Joe’s Crab Shack. The Red Lion also has a popular lounge and a restaurant with views of the river. This portion of the Columbia River Renaissance Trail is part of a longer trail that runs in sections through Vancouver’s downtown area, near Fort Vancouver, over the freeway on a land bridge, along the Discovery Loop Trail and back to Columbia Way near the Columbia Way Neighborhood. The changing weather of the Vancouver area help to add beauty and mystery to the view from the path. The dramatic skies help make looking out over the river a startlingly new sight with each viewing.

THIS TIMBER-FRAMED HOME SITTING ON FIVE ACRES INCLUDES EVERY LUXURY ONE COULD NEED.

Should you fly to this stunning retreat, a helipad awaits you. No matter what convenience you choose, however, a large indoor bay will keep your investment safe and sound. With 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths on 3700 square feet, you’ll have room for friends, family or lodgers, should you choose to share. Still not convinced about the in-laws? There’s a guest property too. This home includes a number of water features, a 9 hole putting green and a sports court.

Stop and think about your dream kitchen or bath for just a moment. Do you have an idea on the kinds of features or functionality it will have? Do you know just the colors you want, the fixtures you’ll have? Turning your vision into reality is exactly what your cabinet manufacturer can and should do for you. The foundation of a beautiful kitchen or bath is top quality materials. Look for a cabinetmaker that uses sustainably harvested wood, low-VOC finishes and high quality hardware. There is truly no replacing the quality of the human hand or the keen attention to detail of the human eye. Beyond excellent quality of materials, look for handcrafted cabinets that aren’t simply pumped through an assembly line. From the prep work through finish application, each step should have a real person there, hand sanding or hand wiping finish and inspecting for quality along the way.

Most importantly, custom cabinetry does not have to break the bank. Form and function can coexist with affordability. Look for a cabinetmaker with robust standard options to keep your upgrade and up charges to a minimum. All of those little extras that make your kitchen or bath special should just be included. Next time you find yourself daydreaming, find DeWils. With local dealers and two area showrooms, you may just be closer than you think to the kitchen or bath of your dreams. www.deWils.com

or the Mall-weary shopper, historic downtown Camas is the perfect destination for a relaxed day of browsing. Stretching along four blocks of NE 4th Ave. are shops featuring gifts, antiques and art, beads, clothes, shoes, home decor, and jewelry as well as a hotel, a theater and a variety of restaurants and pubs. Surrounding streets house children’s clothes, a lounge, a bike shop, several banks, a print shop, a natural pet supply and a specialty shop which sells olive oils, vinegars, tea, pasta and bread. There are several hair dressers and spas in town to start the day off with a spoil-me experience. If lunch is part of your plan for the day, Camas offers around 20 choices in the restaurant category. There are two breweries, two Thai restaurants, a Chinese restaurant, a Teryaki Bowl, Mexican food and Pizza as well as American style restaurants, and Natalia’s, a long established breakfast and lunch spot. In addition there are two coffee shops to perk you up when your step slows!

The outdoor atmosphere in this compact downtown is pleasant and family friendly. The narrow two-lane streets are lined with old fashioned lampposts that give 4th Ave. that sweet small town feel. From the hanging flower-baskets of spring and summer to the glorious Autumn leaves and giant lighted Christmas tree in front of the theater, a colorful and festive mood fills the blocks. On the first Friday evening of each month, the shops stay open late providing snacks and themed games and contests for the family. The wide sidewalks offer seating, fountains and sculptures. Many of the dining establishments set tables out on the sidewalk for outdoor dining when the weather allows. Midsummer to fall a Farmers’ Market pops up on Wednesdays with fruits, vegetables, honey, tea, wine, home canned jams and other products, and some craft items. Walking east, on the fifth block of 4th Ave., is the city’s beautiful library, a modern facility with banks of computers, a study room, upstairs meeting rooms and art displays, and books, of course! www.downtowncamas.com Page 15
