A
fter more than a year of planning and building out, the expanded Bleu Door Bakery on Main Street in the Uptown Village of downtown Vancouver finally opened its doors on July 7th. Now complementing the walk up outdoor counter that Bonnie Brasure has owned since October of 2011 is an additional 1,400 square-feet of indoor space. This has allowed Bleu Door to add a full-fledged Sunday brunch with Brasure’s craveable version of biscuits and gravy—bacon cheddar biscuits smothered in double sausage gravy—and beignets that transplants from the Big Easy are already raving about. The French theme has been set with delicate chandeliers, lavender walls and an expanded pastry case filled with tantalizing treats and baked-from-scratch breads. More outdoor seating is also available and there’s now a well-chosen selection of wines to pair with a crustless vegetable quiche or a ham sandwich with gruyere cheese topped with tomato and apricot relish or roast beef and blue cheese, to name a few. All sandwiches come on house-made artisan breads such as ciabatta and the space that Brasure has created is ideal for lingering over a leisurely meal.
Their Grab and Go sandwich board is still wildly popular. Made fresh daily and stocked in their outdoor case, it appeals to folks pressed for time. With options like ham, smoked cheddar and cucumber; or turkey, roasted red pepper mayonnaise, Swiss and arugula, it’s easy to see why. East Coast reubens made on honey oat bread are available on the express or café side every Friday. Along with her pastry chef training, Brasure has a strong savory background. Evidence of that is seen when watching her prepare pesto sauces to complement pasta dishes for catering events and this knowledge will come in handy when a happy hour menu is added in the fall and Brasure hosts her first wine-focused dinner in November.

hat is “curb appeal”? It is what makes the prospective buyers drive by and say “ahhhh, I really want to see that house!” It’s making the outside look very enticing and attractive, so that everyone can visualize a life in the home.

e as realtors want buyers to come inside and see the great home that is available for them to purchase and make their own. Think of curb appeal as staging for the outside of your home. There are many little, inexpensive things you can do to make the outside more attractive right out of the gate.

ake sure your exterior walls and trim look good and the paint is in good condition,

not stained or badly faded, no peeling paint. The color should be pleasant and not make someone want to cringe (think of that bright pink house down the street-what were they thinking?). When painting, it’s always good to get a sample and paint it on first to make sure it really is the color you think you are buying, believe me, it will save you money on a mistake in the long run.

of Buying a Home:

have a good sense of what you want - not just paint colors and raw materials, but what you really want overall. It’s important to focus on a geographic area where you really want to live, and look at home styles that fit your family. Keep in mind, the thrill of the purchase will fade, making sure you stick within your payment comfort zone will last for the life of your mortgage.
DO
gather documents up front. Be prepared to provide a fairly thick stack of paperwork regarding your financials. Keeping these documents organized, and having them handy, will make the loan process go smoothly once you find the perfect house.
DON’t
make big changes to your financial picture while you’re shopping for a home. Wait to buy a car, consolidate student loans, or make a big job change - you’ll be glad you did.
DO
prioritize and be patient. Keep your list of wants and needs somewhere noticeable, and talk to the other people involved in the process (spouse, partner, realtor, family) about what is important to you, and why.
