ARTIST: Barbara Szkutnik TITLE: “Sidereal Glimpse” MEDIUM: Pastel SIZE (including frame): 22” x 32” PRICE: $650 Barbara’s artwork began at an early age while participating in the Toledo Art Museum’s Art Program. After a move to Fairbanks Alaska, she continued to draw while obtaining her advanced pilot’s rating. Recently, Barabara was awarded a first place by Pastel Magazine in the abstract category and her work has also been featured in the Southwest Art Magazine. Her work is represented by the Ballard and Call Art Gallery in Camas, Washington.

Judy McManus, with the help of her husband Bob, have produced The Real Estate Book and other publications for over 18 years. RESTAURANT & BAR

Rhubarb Crisp Written by Terri Bashkingy | Photo by Chrissy Moe

Rhubarb Crisp

A

Southern US and New England area traditional cuisine is making it’s appearance once again on the Roots Restaurant & Bar dessert menu. Brad Root, owner and chef of Roots, is committed to local, seasonal produce, so it is no surprise to find this ruby colored tangy vegetable paired deliciously with fresh sweet strawberries underneath a crisp topping and a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream.

[

Rhubarb has been used for medical purposes by the Chinese for thousands of years.

]

The use as a food peaked in the 1940’s in the US, but in the late 19th century, Rhubarb was called the “pie plant” because of it’s use in pies. Ben Franklin was credited for bringing rhubarb seeds to America. Here in Washington we enjoy two harvest seasons of this tart delight; late April to May and late June into July. If you have never tried this complex tangy-sweet dessert, you owe it to yourself to stop by for this amazing creation by our renowned baker, Caralee Blazina. Enjoy one of the “Small Plates” on the dinner menu paired with a glass of sparkling wine and be prepared to be “wowed” as you finish off your culinary experience with the Rhubarb Crisp! What could be nicer? Enjoying this tantalizing experience on the outdoor patio with friends and family. Page 6

Evergreen Highway modern master bath suite + outdoor living space with bar This was a modern remodel of a Vancouver home overlooking the Columbia, with expansive views. The clients requested a full re-design of their master bath suite; to turn it into a spa-like oasis. While the house is somewhat traditional in form, the clients’ lifestyle leans toward minimalist. bright designlab clad the bathroom in white horizontally stacked tile, Athens Silver Cream heated marble floors from Ann Sacks, and a mosaic shower. The details include a linear drain, double shower heads and frameless glass enclosure. The floating tub is from Wetstyle, with a floor mounted filler. We custom designed a white concrete trough sink, hung a lighted mirror, specified wall mounted faucets which are all highlighted in a niche. bright desighlab worked with the existing architecture, including the glass block windows to let

in light but maintain privacy. The adjacent master closet is true to the minimalist form with custom stainless steel rods on either side, and a single shelf with clerestory above. The lower floor became an indoor/outdoor entertainment space, with a new wet bar with custome cabinets, stone wall, and new wood flooring that extends seamlessly into an ipe deck. Outside you will find formed concrete planters and a concrete hot tub, designed by bright designlab. The contractor who executed the design was Hammer & Hand. Scope: re-plan of master bath and closet suite, lower floor bar, hardscape at exterior. Selection of all materials and finishes, design of cabinetry, selection of fixtures and lighting. Page 12
