DO YOU NEED A WILL?

The events of the last few years have brought into focus many important realities of life — who we are as individuals and the legacies we plan to leave behind.

Being with our families and having the ability to connect with them and share our significant milestones has taken on a new meaning. As many Ontarians confront their own mortality, the value in appropriate estate planning and the creation of a Will is apparent. If an individual dies without a valid Will, their estate will pass in accordance with the laws of intestacy, which are set out in the Succession Law Reform Act. This article will not explore that process; suffice it to say that allowing the legislature and courts to determine your wishes rather than clearly setting them out is not ideal. When planning your Will, there are several key questions to consider. Who do you want carrying out your wishes and ensuring that your goals are met? This individual is called the executor of your Will and it is crucial to select the right person for you, as well as an alternate.

This person would have to agree to assume legal guardianship, standing in for you in your role as a parent. Again, this is also an appointment who must have an alternate. Other questions may arise with the distribution of your assets and making sure there is money left over to take care of your families needs. All these questions, and more, should be discussed and assessed with your lawyer when planning your Will. Sutherland Marshall provides a free, initial 30-minute consultation to begin this process. Sutherland Marshall Professional Corporation is an award-winning law firm that offers a personalized approach to each client. Founder John David Sutherland and his team provide specialized services in Wills and Estates, Real Estate Law, Family Law and Corporate Law. Other questions may arise with the distribution of your assets and making sure there is money left over to take care of your family’s needs.

Holiday Special

Curated Gifts, the latest treasure trove in Downtown Oakville, is a fresh extension of Joanna and Frank’s beloved Towne Square Gallery. This cozy boutique brings together handmade wonders from both local and European artists, making it the goto spot for unique, one-of-a-kind gifts.

Our jewelry selection sparkles with creations by Ayala Raiter, who works with semi-precious stones, and Toronto’s Nadia Tasci, known for her handmade glass pieces. Claudine Gevry’s LED-lit jewelry adds a funky twist, while Pursuits Jewelry offers modern, chic designs. Looking for quirky? Think ceramic birds flown in from Vancouver and a flock of raku sheep in gold, white, and bold black to add a playful touch to any space.

For a gift that inspires creativity, our Soapstone Carving Kits are a perfect pick for kids, from parents and grandparents alike. Each kit comes with fun animal shapes, making it a hands-on activity that’s as memorable as it is meaningful.

“The gift shop is an extension of our gallery’s taste,” Joanna shares. “Our downtown already has so much to offer, and we’re thrilled to add something truly unique.”

With Christmas around the corner, don’t stress over finding the perfect gift. Browse our Instagram and website, or best yet - visit us in person!

All three galleries are unique, offering one-stop shopping with a view of the Christmas tree displayed in Towne Square!

The kid in me has surrendered to holiday magic. Awash with nostalgia, I see my young self tinkering with my grandmother’s piano before Christmas dinner, giddy with excitement from the smell of roast turkey and the sound of the electric carving knife. Or I reminisce about visiting my mom’s aunt and uncle in northern Québec, and playing croquignole by the fire while a spectacular blizzard encased the big log house in snow.

Sentimentality aside, the holidays are also about making new memories and planning for the year ahead. Trends change, traditions evolve, but this remains a wonderful time of the year.

One place that oozes joy is Downtown Burlington, featured here in a special holiday insert. The delightful folks at the Burlington Downtown Business Association wanted us to tell you about some of their businesses, particularly bakeries, interior designers, pet shops, and wellness centres that warm the spirit during the cold months.

For fresh ways to create ambiance, enjoy our illuminating story on Christmas tree trends. In the spirit of giving, we offer a slew of gift ideas. Locally you can buy gift baskets of just about anything. For gifts that sparkle, talented jewellery designers unveil stunning creations for the season. And if you’re looking for ways to immortalize memories, turn digital photos into uniquely heartfelt gifts.

Aside from spoiling loved ones, another meaningful holiday gesture is giving back to the community. People who could desperately use a helping hand are often under the radar, and that includes victims of domestic violence. Right here at home, women and children who are fleeing abusive situations receive vital support from Halton Women’s Place. Read our Community feature to learn about the centre’s mission, and how to share some cheer with a sister in need.

My personal holiday message as Editor is one of gratitude for the Look Local publishing and sales team (truly the warmest people you’ll ever meet); for our stellar cast of freelance writers; for the graphic designers who bring our words to life; for the businesses, non-profits, artists, and citizens who make our communities so vibrant; and for you, our loyal readers. Wishing you all the very best for the holidays and the New Year!

O h Christmas Tree

There’s nothing quite like the glow of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree to bring the holiday spirit to life. Whether you prefer the fresh scent of a real tree or the ease of an artificial one, choosing the right option for your home is just the first step. This year’s decorating styles range from natural colours and cozy textures to one of 2024’s boldest trends –bright, vibrant tones! Here’s how you can capture the magic of the season in your own living room.

Knotty and Nice

Springridge Farm has been selling freshly cut Christmas trees for over 25 years and let’s be honest, this favourite destination looks like the set of a Hallmark movie. “We go all out to romance the season,” says Tom Hughes of Springridge Farm. “We’re all about the tradition of providing quality trees and building lasting memories.”

The variety of Christmas tree you choose can set the scene for your holiday decorating. “Our most popular tree is the classic Fraser Fir, which has amazing needle retention,” explains Hughes. “Balsam Fir smells divine; Scotch pine is very nostalgic since it’s the OG (original) of Christmas trees; and new for us is Snow Tip, a variety of Fraser Fir that’s tall and thin, making it ideal for smaller, modern spaces.”

Jennifer Klassen, Manager of Centro Garden and Centro NOCA, says people often base their choice between real or artificial on personal history, but it can also depend on their living space. “If you’ve always had a live tree, it’s a [sentimental] feeling to get one every year,” she says. “With the rise of condo living, there isn’t a lot of space for a real tree. I find those customers are switching to an artificial tree since you can purchase one in the height and width that suits your space best.”

Dashing Through The Glow

There are probably as many ways to decorate a Christmas tree as there are snowflakes. How in vogue is yours? Below are the top-trending looks this year:

1. Natural woodland elements –Think pinecones, wooden ornaments, and burlap ribbons with a warm, earthy feel.

2. Bold colours – Adding a modern twist to the classic Christmas palette will bring everyone joy.

3. Maximalist décor – Layer different textures and materials to create a lush, extravagant look using the mindset “more is more.”

4. Monochromatic palettes – Sleek elegance never goes out of style with timeless choices in dreamy single-colour aesthetics.

5. Retro-inspired vintage vibes – Dig out the tinsel and multi-coloured lights for a fun celebration of the season.

“We have beaded ornaments in bright colours, felt ornaments, and vintage-style ornaments that are all new for this year,” says Klassen about what’s in stock at her retail stores. “We’re also seeing a push to incorporate heirloom ornaments that most of us have collected from our parents and grandparents over time.”

Cabrera agrees that adding heirloom ornaments or handmade pieces reflects personal heritage. “Receiving requests to incorporate cultural elements into holiday décor is always a favourite of mine,” she says. “I like to include a parol, which is a star-shaped lantern from Filipino tradition, by hanging smaller versions on the tree or placing a larger one nearby with soft lights. Another idea is incorporating bright, festive colours and family-focused decorations such as nativity scenes, common in Latin American cultures.” VintageBash offers Christmas tree decorating and holiday décor services designed to fit any space and style, from homes to commercial spaces.

And if you’re looking to add a new memory to your ornament collection, Hughes shares, “We’re excited about our custom Springridge Farm red truck ornament because it’s a fun way to commemorate your Christmas tree experience at Springridge.”

Part of the joy of the holiday season is finding a gift for your loved one that reflects their personality and style. In a time of cookie cutter goods, it is heartening to know that there are local jewellery artisans who work with clients to custom design jewellery that will be cherished for a lifetime. Let’s explore gift ideas from three local businesses.

Laura Tedesco Jewellery

Jewellery design is truly a family affair at Laura Tedesco Jewellery in Hamilton. Tedesco grew up observing her father, Dino Tedesco, busy at his craft in the family jewellery business, Venetian Jewellers. Carrying on the tradition of designing jewellery for the past 19 years, she is joined by her husband, John Eleftheriou, a CAD designer, and Dino, who consults and helps out.

Using gold, platinum and precious and semi-precious gemstones, Tedesco designs and produces one-of-a-kind fine jewellery –including engagement rings – and enjoys restyling heirloom pieces to give them a second life.

CUSTOM JEWELLERY DESIGN

One of her designs, a 14k two-tone ring featuring a 5.55 ct. cushion cut blue-green natural sapphire, won the Canadian Jeweller of Excellence Award in the Coloured Gemstone Category in 2018. The ring features natural untreated pink, orange, red and yellow coloured sapphire and 64 pavé set round brilliant diamonds.

For the holidays Tedesco is excited to help clients design a personalized piece for a loved one. “Tell us your gift ideas or let us help guide you in order to make a memorable gift for under the tree!” she says. “Within our Locke Street Studio is a beautifully and meticulously curated retail section, which we maintain and stock with the latest trends and ready-to-wear items.”

Holiday season hits: Tedesco recommends bold gold, mixing metals (both yellow and white gold), diamond tennis necklaces, and mixed matched shaped diamonds.

The Diamond Boutique

Also keeping creativity in the family are sisters Julia and Sandra Karan, who operate The Diamond Boutique in Stoney Creek. Specializing in custom engagement rings and jewellery design, the boutique works with gold, sterling silver, stainless steel, bridal and special occasion jewellery, gemstones, and of course, diamonds!

Working with clients to create pieces that capture their unique vision brings the sisters happiness and pride. “Every piece of jewellery starts with an idea, a thought or a creative vision,” Julia says. “We love everything from the big projects, like engagement rings, to seeing someone light up because they just found that perfect ring or bracelet! That’s what jewellery is all about – telling a story, adding to your personal style, and giving added beauty that gives you confidence.”

Holiday season hits: Karan recommends gold stacking rings, diamond earrings (huggies and studs), sterling silver, and sterling silver and gold bracelets.

Avalon Fine Jewellery

Blending vintage and modern, Avalon Fine Jewellery has been in business in downtown Oakville for the past 36 years. The shop specializes in custom jewellery design, as well as repair and refurbishment of vintage and newer pieces.

Image: The Diamond Boutique

According to Avalon Owner Lucy Paunkoff, the full-service fine jewellery store offers estate jewellery (both vintage and more modern designs), as well as artisan jewellery created by Canadian and American artists. One of the unique services at Avalon is to take clients’ heirloom jewellery pieces and remake them into a new creation they will want to wear for years to come, and not just on rare occasions.

“We made four beautiful pendants for our clients’ granddaughters from an art deco watch bracelet that was set with diamonds in platinum,” Paunkoff says. “The watch being overly formal provided the foundation for the pendants that can now be worn daily.”

Holiday season hits: Paunkoff reports that pearls, necklaces, bracelets and earrings are in, and so are gold hoops of every shape and size, particularly the fullbodied ones. Also popular are vintage treasures from Avalon’s estate collection.

With amazing jewellery artisans in our midst and stores that sell such lovely items, it’s now up to you to shop around for that perfect gift!

a brighter morning

on a bustling street that’s all aglow with coloured lights, you watch passersby from inside a cozy café. Steam from your peppermint latte warms your face. In this festive ambiance, you have no way of knowing that the woman in the suede coat, who just walked by, is in crisis.

Domestic violence happens everywhere, even in the most idyllic communities. It affects people from all walks of life. Victims aren’t limited to any particular ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or gender, though the numbers are largely skewed toward women. In fact, on June 14, 2023 the Halton Region boldly declared that intimate partner violence and violence against women are an epidemic in Halton.

Behind closed doors

According to Laurie Hepburn, Executive Director of Halton Women’s Place, domestic violence is an urgent issue that often goes unnoticed. The organization provides a safe haven, information and education to support a future without abuse for women and their children.

“Last year, we saw 180 individuals through our shelter services alone, and hundreds more through our community outreach programs,” Hepburn says. “Halton Regional Police respond to an average of 10 domestic violence calls daily, and this year, 52 women in Ontario have lost their lives due to intimate partner violence.”

These numbers highlight the pressing need for safe spaces where people feel seen, supported, and heard. And as the above statistics prove, victims’ lives are often in very real danger.

Sadly, the perpetrator is often someone very close to the victim. The Government of Canada reports that intimate partner violence comes in many forms, many of which are prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada. The abuse happens as physical harm, criminal harassment (stalking), or sexual violence (including sexual acts without consent, degrading language, pressure to watch or participate in the making of pornography, and threats of repercussions for refusing sexual activity). Intimate partner violence can also be emotional, financial, spiritual, or technology-facilitated (cyber-violence, cyber-stalking, as well as scaring, threatening or humiliating someone online).

Bruised, not broken

Despite the emotional and physical harm caused by domestic violence, there is a silver lining, and that is the amazing capacity for the human brain and body to heal. Amid much sadness, people in Hepburn’s line of work witness human resiliency time and time again.

“The stories of those we serve are powerful,” Hepburn says. “One individual came to us after years of feeling isolated and invisible, and with time and support, she regained her independence and now volunteers to support others on a similar journey. Another client and her children arrived unsure of their next steps but left with stable housing and renewed hope.”

It is through safe spaces like Halton Women’s Place that these transformations happen.

How to Help

You can support Halton Women’s Place by donating, volunteering, or simply raising awareness. This season’s Holiday Hamper Program provides essential items and gifts to families in the care of Halton Women’s Place and those transitioning to independence. “It’s a meaningful way to bring comfort during the holidays, ensuring everyone feels valued,” Hepburn says. Following the holiday season, Halton Women’s Place will host its annual gala in February (see below).

Domestic abuse affects everyone, which is why every community member has a role in making people feel supported and valued. The more we build a supportive environment, the stronger our community becomes.

“Every contribution helps us continue to create safe spaces for those who need it,” Hepburn says. “Creating safe spaces isn’t just about physical shelter, it’s about showing people they’re not alone.”

An elegant night of philanthropy, this annual fundraising gala helps to advance the mission of Halton Women’s Place of providing safe shelter, support, and advocacy.

Warm holiday wishes,

As the outdoors become blustery and grey, home quickly becomes the centre of our universe. An inviting ambiance is everything! If you’re looking for ways to add comfort, joy and a touch of class to your indoor sanctuary, read on for home décor tips from local experts.

Vintage and Antique

Vintage styles and warm, cozy colour palettes create a sense of stability and warmth. “After years of uncertainty, people are leaning toward familiar, comforting aesthetics,” says Lisa Kooistra, Principal Designer at Lisa Kooistra Designs Inc. She adds that Art Deco is making a comeback with bold geometric patterns, luxurious materials, and metallic accents.

For holiday décor, “people are starting to collect ornaments that mean something to them, maybe handed down from a family member,” says . “Trees are more vintage and

Natural

“Incorporating nature into interiors continues to grow in popularity, with living walls, indoor gardens, and large windows that bring the outside in!” Kooistra says. “Eco-friendly design is also gaining traction, with a focus on upcycled materials and sustainable textiles.”

To carry on the nature theme for the holidays, she suggests using a live spruce or fir as a Christmas tree that can later be planted outside.

Handmade

Artisanal and handcrafted items are appealing because they tell a story. “This holiday season, knitted or crochet home decorations, wooden farmhouse signs, and clean burning cozy scented candles seem to be what is popular!” says Layla Toppazzini, Manager of The Handmade House Burlington.

THE HANDMADE HOUSE

Soft textures, earth-friendly materials, and wood lend a natural theme and feel to a home. Many home décor items at The Handmade House Burlington use upcycled materials. “These items also make for great conversation pieces, and add to the community feeling in one's home,” Toppazzini says. “For example, carry a piece from a local artist, or something crafted by a parent in your community!”

Serene

Meditative environments are trending, with designs that promote relaxation and mindfulness, according to Kooistra. Along with calming colour palettes, enlightened homeowners are opting for yoga spaces, reading nooks, and saunas.

Colourful

“Shades like terracotta, deep mustard, and olive green create a cozy interior,” Kooistra says. Don’t forget to add metallics, she adds. Contrasts are always eye-catching, which is why warm earth tones pair so well with gold, silver, bronze, as well as jewel tones, particularly during the festive season.

Klassen sees a shift towards adding more colour, both at Christmas and every day. She encourages incorporating non-traditional colours, including purple, peach, teal, and pink, into holiday décor.

Traditional

Folks are being more liberal-minded and playful with Christmas colour schemes, but always with a nod to the classics.

“The timeless combination of red and green is also being reimagined,” Kooistra says, “with deeper shades and accents, like dusty rose or navy, to modernize the look while retaining its festive spirit.”

SALLY Hello Kelso! What’s Santa Paws getting you for Christmas?

KELSO Hiya Sally! My sister Rosie and I each get a big raw bone! Gnawing keeps us busy while the humans are eating turkey at the table. We’ll get doggie desserts, too.

SALLY Do you get other presents?

KELSO Yep! We always get a new squeaky toy. Rosie loves to “boop” her wrapped present and then she goes all cuckoo crazy when she unwraps it. Luna and Milo will probably get presents too, even though they’re, you know… cats. They’ll get lots of treats, new toys, and a special supper.

What about you guys? Will Santa Paws bring something good?

SALLY Of course, silly. We’re golden retrievers, after all. Santa loves goldens, so Duke and Addison and I will have a spa day at our Mama’s shop, Beauty N The Beast.

The so-called “most wonderful time of the year” is also a time of emotional peaks and valleys. For many people, this is a time of family tension, loneliness, economic pressures, shopping woes, and other stressors.

If you don’t feel so falalalala, you’re not alone. “A lot of pressure can come with the holiday season, the pressure to be present, enjoy, and make things special,” says Stefanie Peachey, a Registered Social Worker and founder of Peachey Counselling and Family Support. “This pressure can often lead to disappointment when high expectations are not met.”

Even with festivities, winter can dampen moods. Seasonal Affective Disorder makes it hard to focus and keep our mental health on track in the cold, grey months. “Regardless of whether or not a formal diagnosis of depression has been made,” Peachey says, “the impacts of lower temperatures and darker and shorter days can have a significant impact on many people.”

“The biggest relationship that often goes uncared for is the one we have with ourself,” says Chantell Lamondin Tunney, Registered Homeopath at Prism Healing Centre. “The holidays can put us in touch with aspects of ourselves that we have been avoiding or perhaps needs that have not been met for one reason or another.”

A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE SEASON

Healing begins when we are willing to partner with ourselves, go into the places that need loving care, and be patient with the process of personal transformation, according to Lamondin Tunney. Here are some of her tips for cruising more smoothly through the holidays:

 Be kind to yourself, honour what you need to stay emotional and physically healthy.

 Take care of your immune system! Late nights, rich foods and alcohol all tax our immunity.

 Ritualize your personal care routine. Have a healthy bedtime routine, and predetermine your intentions when it comes to eating and drinking at special events.

 Find a way to spend time with yourself and check in on you.

 Be kind.

PLAN AHEAD

Peachey recommends planning for seasonal changes before they happen, so they don’t catch us off-guard. By knowing our own mood triggers, we can create coping strategies.

Strategies can include adjusting lighting at home, looking forward to social and physical activities. When thoughts of hopelessness creep in, Peachey reminds us that winter is temporary. “The warmth, sun, and daylight always return in the spring,” she says.

Whether it be gathering with friends and family, or helping to prepare a traditional holiday meal. Skating & skiing. Hot chocolate and yummy holiday treats. The first snowfall of the year. Perhaps even the annual family car ride to look at the twinkling lights.

The winning design will be featured on the gift card holiday packaging for the Burlington Downtown Gift Card Program. Supporting local this holiday season has never been so festive.

Our winning design was proudly designed by 7-year-old Siena. Siena’s inspiration for her amazing art was capturing the moments that mean the most to her. Our team here at the Burlington Downtown Business Association are so proud to have been able to partner with such a talented community artist.

Congratulations, Siena!

Wishing you and yours a warm and wonderful holiday season, THE BDBA TEAM

Sweet Talk

Must-have desserts for your holiday table

When it comes to indulgences, we Burlingtonians are a bit spoiled to have such exceptional bakers and confectioners in the heart of our downtown. In preparation for the festive season, we asked them about their featured holiday treats. Here’s a shortlist of their proudest, most decadent creations.

KELLY'S BAKE SHOPPE

Kandy Sweeties

2060 LAKESHORE

RD UNIT 108, BURLINGTON

Specializing in retro & novelty candy products, Kandy Sweeties is an essential destination for holiday shoppers. From festive gift baskets filled with classic holiday treats like ribbon candy, peppermint and cinnamon candies, to their exclusive themed candy pills, they have everything to make your celebrations sweeter and your stockings stuffier.

Warm winter wishes

May your days be filled with warmth, love, and good cheer as you celebrate the season.

Happy holidays from me and my team.

Aroma Pastry

361 BRANT ST, BURLINGTON

Every day before sunrise the bakers at Aroma Pastry are hard at work, filling the streets with the intoxicating scent of fresh baked goods. This bakery blends French pastry traditions with Middle Eastern influences. “Many of our desserts reflect the rich flavours and ingredients native to our heritage,” says General Manager Tariq Abu Taha.

One signature item is the pistachio croissant, a crowd favourite consisting of flaky, buttery pastry and a rich pistachio filling. Another big hit is the Dubai croissant filled with both pistachio and Kunafa — a delicious Middle Eastern dessert with layered crispy pastry and sweet cheese soaked in syrup.

Aroma’s eclairs come in pistachio, tiramisu, coconut raspberry, just to name a delicious few, showcasing Aroma’s commitment to classic pastry techniques.

For a unique Holiday treat, Tariq recommends the Dubai Chocolate Bar (smooth chocolate with a sweet, crispy pistachio-knafeh filling). “It’s an irresistible treat that our customers absolutely adore,” Tariq says.

Kelly’s Bake Shoppe

401 BRANT ST, BURLINGTON

This bakery’s offerings are so delicious, it’s hard to believe they are 100% dairy-free, eggfree, plant-based, gluten-free, peanut-free & allergy friendly! Try these holiday highlights:

MATCHA SHORTBREAD CHRISTMAS TREE COOKIES

REINDEER GINGERBREAD COOKIES -

Soft & chewy gingerbread cookies full of warm seasonal spices, made with organic evaporated cane juice and hand-decorated with an adorable reindeer face!

Bocconcino

Bakery And Café

414 LOCUST STREET, BURLINGTON

Fans of Italian desserts adore this family owned and operated bakery. Bocconcino’s best-seller all year is the Sicilian cannoli –pastry shells filled with a sweet sheep’s milk cheese. The ingredients are imported from Sicily.

A seasonal holiday feature is Bocconcino’s tiramisu log, a yule log with a chocolatemascarpone-coffee Italian flair.

Craig’s Cookies

Culaccino Bar & Kitchen 527 Brant St, Burlington (905) 635-4626

culaccino.ca

For the gnocchi:

INGREDIENTS

• 4 lbs of Russet potatoes

• 2 egg yolks

• 2 cups (or 240g) of flour, sifted

METHOD

• Optional: pinch of nutmeg, salt

1. Poke holes in the potatoes and place them on a baking tray in a 350 F oven, and allow them to cook until soft (approx. 1.5 hours).

2. Remove the potatoes from the oven and allow them to cool, then remove the skins and put them through a ricer. You should end up with approx. 2 lbs of potatoes, the correct ratio for this recipe. Every lb of cooked and riced potato requires 1 cup of flour and 1 egg yolk.

3. Add the eggs and the flour to the potato while using a scraper to “chop” in the ingredients. Incorporate all the ingredients and then make a ball. Do not knead the mixture for too long. Let rest for 15-20 minutes.

4. Cut the gnocchi into long strands and with flat palms and medium pressure, roll into long equally shaped ropes to a size you prefer (3/4” to 1” recommended). The motion should look like you are rolling in a half circle outwards and back again. When they are finished, blanch the gnocchi in salted water and allow to cool. Portion to whatever size you would like. This recipe should yield about 3 lbs or 6 to 9 portions.

For the sauce:

INGREDIENTS

• 2 lbs mushrooms

• 2 shallots, finely diced

• 2 cloves garlic

• 2 tbsp cold butter

METHOD

• 2 – 3 oz dry white wine

• 500 ml 35% cream

• Optional: herbs, truffle oil, Parmesan cheese

1. Sautee the mushrooms in butter and season to taste. Add the shallots and garlic half way into the cooking, making sure you do not burn them.

2. Add the white wine to deglaze, and finally the cream.

3. Toss the sauce into the gnocchi and serve immediately. Garnish with Parmesan if desired.

finding the perfect gift can sometimes feel overwhelming, but there’s a solution that never goes out of style – gift baskets! These treasure troves of goodies are versatile, thoughtful, and full of surprises. What’s not to love?

Whether you’re looking for a hostess gift, a corporate gesture, or something with a personal touch, a gift basket fits the bill. Here’s why:

Full of Variety

A gift basket is multiple gifts in one. Perfect for those who like to sample new things, or that hard-to-buy-for someone who seems to have everything, it packs a lot of joy in one bundle. An assortment of treats, snacks, or even self-care products is an eye-catching gift that’s brimming with small treasures to enjoy, one piece at a time, throughout the holiday season.

Wrapped and Ready

For anyone juggling a busy holiday schedule (aren’t we all?), gift baskets are a life- saver. Many local shops offer pre-made baskets you can grab and go – no wrapping required! Festive bows and themed decorations add seasonal cheer to each basket.

At Christy’s Gourmet Gifts, for example, premade golden gift boxes filled with assorted handmade chocolates and sweets have become an annual customer tradition. “They’re the gift people look forward to year after year,” says Christy Mueller, co-owner of Christy’s Gourmet. Customers can choose one of the shop’s premade boxes or hand-select items they’d like to include. looklocal.ca

Mrs. B’s Gifthouse

Gift to Anyone

Gift baskets are a great option for family, a co-worker or client, a neighbour, a close friend, or virtually anyone on your gift list. They’re thoughtful without being overly personal and work well for large groups or party hosts, too. And they look impressive because they’re filled with treats such as gourmet food, craft beer, wine, chocolate, self-care goodies or a combination of surprises.

They’re also a great choice when you don’t know the recipient well. “A gift basket is still more personal than a gift card,” says Diane Bentivegna, owner and Founder of Mrs. B’s Gifthouse. “There’s always going to be something in them that they’ll like.”

Easy to Share

One of the best things about gift baskets is how sharable they are. Imagine opening up a basket filled with cheeses, crackers, or hot cocoa for everyone at your workplace to enjoy. Spreading cheer is what gift giving is all about.

What makes the perfect gift basket?

Include a signature item. Every gift basket needs a standout piece, and at Mrs. B’s Gifthouse it’s biscotti! Bentivegna and her team hand make their famous biscotti in house and even offer gluten-free options. At Christy’s Gourmet, their Belgian milk chocolate toffee crunch is a crowd-pleasing favourite, along with their whipped butter shortbread for the holidays. Whatever the choice, these goodies are the “wow” factor.

Personalize It. Even when you buy a pre-made basket, there’s still room for a personal touch. Add a handwritten note or a sentimental item like a tree ornament to make the gift truly special. Mrs. B’s Gifthouse often includes gifts customers bring in to add to their pre-made baskets. “If you make chocolate chip cookies your friend loves, you can bring those in and we’ll put them in your gift basket,” says Bentivegna.

Build your own. Have fun creating a personalized gift basket! Make it sweet (think chocolates, cookies, hot chocolate mixes), savoury (cheese, crackers, chips, nuts), or practical (tools and gizmos from the hardware store), the sky’s the limit. A self-care themed basket could include candles, bath soaps, gourmet snacks and artisanal goodies. Don’t forget dietary restrictions – many gourmet shops now make gluten-free treats and nut-free options so everyone can enjoy.

This holiday season, don’t fret about how to express your generosity, gratitude or love. Gift baskets are the perfect way to deliver holiday spirit, offering variety, thoughtfulness and the joy of discovering what’s inside.

Hidden in your camera roll on your phone are thousands of precious memories. Instead of letting those photos collect digital dust, why not give them three-dimensional life by transforming them into tangible gift items? From cozy mugs to nostalgic ornaments, your favourite snapshots are waiting to be enjoyed.

Burlington family photographer Christine Murray knows photo gifts are more than just presents – they’re a way to show someone how much you care. “Whether it’s a moment frozen in time with a loved one, a reminder of a significant milestone, or even just a photo that brings a smile to their face, photo gifts have the power to evoke joy every time they’re seen or used,” says Murray.

Many of her clients love turning their photos into holiday cards. It’s a classic way to share cherished moments with friends and family! One of Murray’s favourite photo gifts was a custom photo blanket that a family ordered for grandparents. “It was such a unique way to celebrate their growing family and offer something cozy and heartfelt,” she says.

Another creative client made a series of photo ornaments for each family member. “It was a beautiful way to personalize their holiday décor and make it a tradition each year,” says Murray. If you want to take your photos off your camera roll and put them under the tree, consider these photo gift ideas:

Photo Mugs

Photo mugs are a practical yet sentimental gift, perfect for the coffee or tea lover in your life. Every sip will warm them with a happy memory or remind them of someone special. Fill the mug with hot chocolate mixes or their favourite coffee or tea blend to make the gift even sweeter.

Custom Ornaments

Holiday ornaments are a festive way to incorporate photos into your gift. You can even build a tradition by adding a new photo ornament each year.

Photo Calendar

The gift that lasts all year! A photo calendar can serve as a collection of the best moments of the year. It’s a practical and thoughtful gift.

Photo Blanket

Nothing says cozy like a soft personalized blanket. You can make a photo blanket with a large single image, or a series of photos in a collage. These make wonderful gifts for grandparents, offering warmth and comfort with a heartfelt touch.

Images: Staples Canada

Photo Puzzles

Photo Pillows

Print a beloved family photo onto a pillow that the recipient can display on their sofa or bed. This is a fun and unique way to integrate photos into everyday décor.

Custom Photo Books

A photo book is a beautiful way to create a narrative from your memories. These make perfect gifts for close family members and friends and can even be a fun DIY project that you can customize with personal captions or messages.

To make your photo books even more special, buy someone a subscription! Chatbooks offers photo book subscriptions with 4, 6 or 12 books per year, so you can share your memories all year round.

Framed Prints

Framed photo art is a timeless option and a beautiful way to keep memories alive. There are many options for turning your photos into wall art. Burlington Camera offers custom photo services and can help size photos up or down.

“We create large print sizes and canvases as well as plaque mounted and float mounted photos,” says Rich Gibson, co-owner of Burlington Camera.

The festive season warms our hearts with family, friends, and cherished traditions. What better way to add even more sweetness than with cakes from different cultures? Bursting with flavour and history, these treats “take the cake” when it comes to bringing people together. Try these beloved holiday desserts, fresh from bakeries in our deliciously diverse community.

The Yule Log (Bûche de Noël)

The Yule Log, or Bûche de Noël, has been a holiday favourite for generations. Inspired by the Germanic tradition of burning a yule log to welcome the sun, this 19th-century French cake symbolizes warmth and light. It’s a rolled sponge cake covered in chocolate buttercream, decorated to look like a tree branch with meringue mushrooms and a dusting of powdered sugar snow for a rustic touch.

British Fruit Cake

This holiday staple is packed with dried fruits, nuts, and sometimes a splash of rum or brandy. It’s dense and often covered in a thick layer of marzipan or royal icing. Fruit cake dates back to ancient Rome, when it was made with pomegranate seeds and raisins. And while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, in the UK, a holiday without fruit cake would be decidedly unfestive.

Jamaican Black Cake

Speaking of fruit cakes, Jamaican Black Cake is served both at weddings and during the Christmas season. Soaking it in rum and wine gives it an intense flavour and a beautiful dark colour. This cake warms you from the inside out, making it a holiday favourite in many Caribbean households. (Author’s note: I’m not a fruitcake fan, but this one might convert me!)

Allahabadi Cake from India

Traditionally made for Christmas by Christian communities in India, Allahabadi Cake is a fruitcake with a twist. It’s spiced with ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg and soaked in rum, but also includes ghee and petha (a candied gourd).

Hanukkah Cake (Apple Cinnamon Cake)

To mark the eight-day celebration of Hanukkah, many families enjoy a delicious Apple Cinnamon Cake. This spiced cake has layers of apples, cinnamon, and a hint of honey, symbolizing the sweetness of life and the warmth of family. The simplicity of this cake is its strength — easy to make and bursting with flavour.

Kurisumasu Keki from Japan

In Japan, Christmas is a relatively modern holiday, and the Kurisumasu Keki is its sweetest symbol. This light sponge cake is layered with whipped cream and strawberries, a simple but elegant dessert that’s as pretty as it is delicious.

Panettone from Italy

This fluffy cake filled with dried fruits has become a global holiday favourite. Its subtle sweetness is perfect for the season. Have leftovers? Panettone French toast or bread pudding makes a rich breakfast treat.

Bibingka from the Philippines

Bibingka is a traditional Filipino rice cake. Made with coconut milk, eggs, and cheese, this cake is typically cooked in clay pots lined with banana leaves for a unique, slightly smoky flavour. It’s often served after midnight mass during the Christmas season.

Drømmekage from Denmark

The Danish Drømmekage, or “Dream Cake,” is as dreamy as it sounds. It’s a moist sponge cake topped with a crunchy caramelized coconut topping.

Bolo Rei from Portugal

Bolo Rei or King Cake is a Portuguese classic that’s both fun and flavourful. Shaped like a crown and filled with candied fruits and nuts, it’s traditionally eaten from Christmas through Epiphany. The real excitement comes from the hidden surprises — a tiny gift and a fava bean are baked inside. Whoever finds the bean has to buy the cake next year.

Chinese New Year Cake

Many families celebrate Lunar New Year with Nian Gao, a sweet, chewy steamed rice cake made of glutinous rice flour and brown sugar. Symbolizing prosperity and growth, it’s traditionally shared with loved ones to bring good fortune in the year ahead. I’ll take some of that!

Christmas Cake

Finally, whimsical cakes decorated with beloved holiday characters or winter scenes can be enjoyed at holiday parties around our community, bringing a festive touch that delights both the eyes and the taste buds.

THE SWEETEST THING'S

Gingerbread Cookies

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar

1/3 cup molasses

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups flour

2 teaspoons cinnamon

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

METHOD

1. In a stand mixer, cream the butter and brown sugar. Add molasses, egg, and vanilla, and mix again.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, ginger, baking soda, salt, and ground cloves. Gradually add this to the wet mixture, mixing as you go.

3. Shape the dough into a ball, divide it in half, and flatten each half into a 1-inch disk. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least 2 hours.

4. Preheat oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place on prepared sheets, re-rolling scraps as needed.

6. Bake one sheet at a time for 7–9 minutes, until edges are set but centres are still soft. For softer cookies, remove while slightly underdone (about 8 minutes for 3-inch cookies). You may need to adjust time based on your oven and cookie size.
