PUBLISHER'S LETTER

W

e’re incredibly blessed here in Mississauga to have access to some of Ontario’s most spectacular waterfront. It’s a privilege to be able to spend time near or on the water, and this issue is filled with resources and tips to help you get the most out of these fleeting summer months, whether you’re at home enjoying your beachy decor or out on the lake or river. Our Home & Garden story is all about transforming your castle into a tropical villa. With the right accessories and some on-trend ideas, it’s easy and inexpensive to add a ‘beach party bingo’ vibe to your summer living. Summer’s the perfect time, too, to explore Mississauga’s waterfront, and we share some great ways how to do it safely in our Health & Wellness story. Check out our Events section, too! As pandemic restrictions ease, the number of live, in-person festivals and concerts (bonus: most are free!), is growing every issue we print. Over the summer, Celebration Square is the place to be, with something happening in this awesome community space almost every day. Our Beach theme continues in our Shop Local section, where we feature the latest, greatest beach day essentials, all available in local shops. DYK? When you grill fruits, their already delicious flavours intensify as their natural sugars caramelize. Juicy fruits get even juicier, and the smoke from the grill gives everything a woodsy, hanging-around-thecampfire vibe. In our Food & Drink feature, we’ve got some fabulous, simple suggestions to try grilling with different fruits, which are so readily available this time of year. Speaking of bountiful fruits and vegetables, our recipe for Grilled Watermelon and Arugula Salad comes courtesy of the Lakeview Farmers’ Market. We’ve prepped a handy list for all of the markets in the city… clip it out and visit them all! Happy summer, everyone!

s Canadians, we sure don’t enjoy a tropical climate— blink and you might miss summer—but that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend. Decorating your spaces, both indoor and outdoor, to manifest a beachy, vintage vibe is on trend right now. So how can you quickly and easily transform your home into a summery paradise? We spoke with local expert Diana Olsen, co-owner of Inner Beach Co., the popular Port Credit shop that focuses on living the beach life. The store recently celebrated its first anniversary. "Creating a beach or surf shack inspired interior space is more about an attitude than a theme," explains Olsen. "It looks and feels effortless and understated—or even under finished."

INNER BEACH

HERE ARE SOME OF DIANA’S EXPERT TIPS:

FRESHEN UP WITH CITRUS As simple an idea as it may seem, decorating with a bowl of citrus fruits—lemons, oranges, limes—can do wonders to make an entire room feel brighter, fresher and more summery. When the fruit is ready to toss, use its zest to flavour your food, then use the leftover peels to freshen your garbage.

INCORPORATE LINENS IN YOUR ROOMS Due to its weave and the properties of flax, linen is naturally breathable, allowing air to flow between the fibres. Swap out your heavy winter bedding and lap blankets with neutral or white linen sheets and pillowcases for a breezier look and feel.

14

Look Local Volume 3 | Issue 1

IF YOU NEED TO ACT FAST Throwing an impromptu beach bash? For the fastest possible makeover, simply swap in graphic paintings for your usual wall art, invest in some house plants like fern or palm (add twinkly lights for some summer magic), display lots of fresh flowers—even pull out your vibrantly coloured dollar store melamine dishware and funky plastic glassware to serve guests. Blow up some beach balls, turn on the Dock Rock playlist and you’re all set to go!

OBJECTS OF INTEREST When it comes to choosing accessories for your beachy home, be creative! A paddle looks great as art, and a used canoe or kayak makes a great outdoor flower planter. Give your guests a serious Amalfi Coast villa vibe by including shells in your accessories— shell motif mirror, anyone? Don’t be afraid to spotlight fun, beachy items—hang a buoy or lifejacket on the wall because, why not?

ORGANIZE YOUR GEAR Just because you love summer doesn’t mean your stuff should be everywhere! Designate a place to corral all your beach and sporting gear. A woven seagrass basket or two will do the trick nicely.

PREP THE PATIO Get your patio ready for al fresco entertaining. If your deck or garden has enough space, carve out two separate areas to double the functionality: a separate lounge and eating area for both an outdoor living room and dining room.

16

Look Local Volume 3 | Issue 1

TREAT YOUR WINDOWS When you choose seasonal curtains and drapery, keep in mind that light colours reflect heat and darker colours absorb it, so choose white or lighter to stay cool and fresh. Or why not nix your heavy drapes completely, trading for knotted rope to achieve that beach house vibe? TIP: Add gauzy panels to your backyard gazebo to add privacy, shield the sun, and keep mosquitoes at bay.

REUSE, RECYCLE Need to furnish an outdoor room or gazebo? Repurpose a gently used patio set, even if it’s mismatched. It’s as easy as grabbing a bucket of paint. Choose a cloudy blue or soft yellow and voila… a cozy conversation set!

looklocalmagazine.com

17

FIREPLACE AS CANVAS Odds are, you won't be stoking any flames for another few months, so for now, stack leftover wood (birch is a nice option) or position candles in your fireplace. Looking for a coastal style? A gorgeous piece of coral makes an eye-catching vignette.

MEDITERRANEAN VILLA? Use tropical colours and materials to turn your home into an island hideaway. We particularly love a lime green and pale coral colour scheme. And think about incorporating texture—use lots of rattan and raffia, sisal and even driftwood.

18

Look Local Volume 3 | Issue 1

AMP UP THE BAR Fresh and fruity summer cocktails deserve a dedicated station. Whip up a mojito, margarita or mai tai at a well-stocked table… and remember to offer some fun garnishes to decorate those yummy bevvies.

INVITE THE LIGHT WITH WHITE For a more permanent summery vibe, why not lighten up entirely? Paint everything white, from the walls to the furniture, and then choose cream, sand, or white textiles. After you have your blank canvas, you can accessorize with any colour you love… and change up the look easily, no matter the season! LL

e’re blessed to have an abundance of beautiful waterfront here in Mississauga. In fact, one of our City’s most beautiful features is its wealth of waterfront amenities. This summer, whether you’re looking to relax, get some exercise, unwind in nature or dine al fresco, make a point to spend more time by the water. Try a stroll along the Credit River, head out onto Lake Ontario for a paddle or a rip on a jet ski, or enjoy a sunny, sandy beach picnic day at Jack Darling Park… whatever it is, just be sure to take advantage of this precious gift that’s right at our doorstep.

HERE ARE SOME OF OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: IF YOU WANT TO RELAX Go for a stroll and enjoy nature’s beauty by the water. The Mississauga section of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail is a continuous trail passing 22 parks, the Bradley Museum and Rattray Marsh, one of the few remaining wetlands along Lake Ontario. This beautifully designed stretch of waterfront features historic artifacts from the area’s former industrial days.

FINALLY TIME FOR

Embrace the power of friendship, freedom to choose your own adventure, and a level of independence tailored specifically to you. DID YOU KNOW There are nine waterfront parks in Port Credit— remarkable, considering there are only two kilometres of Lake Ontario shoreline.

Is a river hike more your style? The mighty Credit runs all the way through Mississauga and there are many access points, including Port Credit, of course, Erindale Park and Memorial Park in Streetsville.

Check out Great Lakes Waterfront Trail waterfronttrail.org Lake Aquitaine Park ontariotrails.on.ca

IF YOU WANT TO FISH Looking to test your luck with a rod and reel? There are 75 types of fish in the Credit River, which winds its way through Mississauga down to Lake Ontario. Pumpkinseed, smallmouth and largemouth bass, Chinook and coho salmon and rainbow trout (also called steelhead, which is incidentally the name of Mississauga’s junior hockey team), are commonly found.

30

Look Local Volume 3 | Issue 1

In Meadowvale, the north part of the City, Lake Aquitaine is the recipient of rainbow trout stocking and also hosts a naturally producing population of panfish such as sunfish, rock bass and perch. Some nice largemouth bass find the aquatic plants and woody debris along the lake’s shores to their liking as well.

Check out Fishing Booker fishingbooker.com

All year long, anglers can fish the Credit River at the mouth of the river at Port Credit and up to Erindale Park for steelhead and salmon. During the spring, summer and fall months, venture out onto Lake Ontario and see the City from the water! There are several charter boat companies in Port Credit: rent a guided charter and spend a day or an afternoon testing your luck? Who knows? You might come home with a prize-winning salmon!

FACT

humans love to be near water. Science has proven time and again that people are happier and healthier when they’re closer to the water, whether that’s the ocean, lake, a river—even a bathtub.

IF YOU WANT TO RAISE YOUR HEART RATE Like other forms of aerobic exercise, watersports can lead to the release of positive chemicals, like endorphins and endocannabinoids, which reduce the brain’s response to stress and anxiety.

Check out Port Credit Adventure Rentals portcreditadventurerentals.ca PHIN-SUP phin-sup.ca

With a sport like kayaking or paddling, you’re combining this with the beauty of the water, the challenge of an ever-changing environment, and the adrenaline invoked by potential danger. Try stepping up your adventure by renting a canoe, paddleboard, kayak or jet ski—you can even charter a fishing boat—and get out on the water. After all, that’s where the best view is! Mississauga boasts a number of options for paddlers, both novice and experienced, to contact if you want to get your paddle on, and some of these outfitters even rent out jet skis!

IF YOU WANT TO GET AWAY FROM THE NOISE Doctors were known to prescribe seaside visits to people suffering from depression as early as the 18th and 19th centuries but spending time by the water is even more important today. The constant noise from our surroundings—construction, traffic and of course, we’re tethered to our phones—means we’re burdened with lots of outside stress and anxiety in our lives. But when we are on or by the water, and especially when we focus on the ebb and flow of waves meeting the shore, there is a high degree of predictability because it’s the same from moment to moment. It’s this predictability that allows our brains to relax. Head to the shores of Jack Darling Park to enjoy some beach time or visit Rattray Marsh for some of the best birdwatching in Ontario. Other beaches to explore include Richard's Memorial Park Beach, Lakefront Promenade Park Beach and Marie Curtis Park Beach.

TRY FRUIT ON THE BARBECUE FOR A TASTY SUMMER TREAT BY MICHELE BOGLE

36

Look Local Volume 3 | Issue 1

T

here’s nothing like fresh fruit, especially when served cold on a hot summer afternoon. But—game changer alert—if you were to learn that grilling brings out the best flavours of some varieties of fruit? Whether you use gas or charcoal, the intense heat of the barbecue adds a smoky-sweet flavour or caramelized texture to some varieties of fruit. With the abundance of fresh, delicious fruit now available at your local Farmers’ Market, why not experiment and add some sweet, grilled goodness to your next al fresco meal?

FIRST, OIL: • To prevent the fruit pieces from sticking to your grill, brush them first with a neutral-tasting oil that's suitable for high heat, such as safflower or grapeseed oil. • Brushing olive or avocado oil directly on the grates while they’re cold is also effective for keeping the fruit from sticking.

CUSTOM CAKES AND PASTRIES ∙ LOCALLY PRODUCED INGREDIENTS

H AV E A

SWEET DAY 233 Lakeshore Rd. E., Mississauga

looklocalmagazine.com 37 37 905-274-CAKE ∙ goldcherrybakery.ca

GRILLING TIPS: • Worried your fruit isn’t quite ripe? No problem! In fact, that slightly unripened condition is perfect for barbecuing. Because the grill’s heat caramelizes the sugars in fruit and weakens the structure, it’s important that the raw fruit be slightly firm so that it holds up on the racks of your barbecue. Overripe or mushy fruit will be more likely to fall apart.

38

• Most fruit is fairly delicate, so cut fruit into large chunks or slices to help it maintain its structure. Also, larger pieces are less likely to fall between the grates. Small fruits like strawberries and grapes can go on skewers so you don't lose them to the flames. • For the coveted grill marks, most fruit should be grilled over high heat for three minutes without moving or turning it to get the perfect sear. Then flip and cook for one to three minutes more. The surface of the fruit needs time to sear so that it won't stick. Be warned; some sticking can happen no matter what you do. Sometimes you get better grill marks with unoiled grates! • By placing a hearty piece of fruit flesh side down, you'll get that scrumptious caramelization you’re looking for! • High heat causes some grilled fruits to give off a lot of juice. By placing the fruit on a rimmed baking sheet, you can catch all that juicy goodness after it comes off the grill. This would make a great marinade for proteins like pork, chicken and fish.

Which

Fruits Grill

the Best?

Pineapple, watermelon, lemons, peaches, bananas, avocado, apples, and pears are some of the tastiest fruits to grill that hold up against the heat. Pineapple’s tanginess and acidity become sweet and aromatic with the intense heat of the grill. Cut your pineapples into slices or wedges and grill them for three minutes on each side. Pineapple needs more time to cook than peaches and citrus fruit do. To help dense fruits heat all the way through, you can put the lid on the grill for a few minutes at a time. HEALTH BENEFITS low in calories and rich in fibre, aids in digestion, good bone health as well as an anti-inflammatory. Grilled watermelon takes on a smoky-sweet flavour that is truly out of this world. Set your grill on medium, instead of hot, to avoid scorching the wedges while cooking for 3 minutes on each side.

HEALTH BENEFITS a good source of vitamin C, as well as the antioxidant citrulline, which has been associated with improved blood pressure. Grilled lemons take only five minutes to grill, drizzled with a little olive oil, and the heat loosens their sour, citrusy juices and adds a tasty, charred flavour. HEALTH BENEFITS lemons may support heart health, weight control, and digestive health. Cut peaches in half and remove the pit. Lightly brush each side of the peaches with olive oil and grill each side for 4 to 5 minutes until grill marks appear. HEALTH BENEFITS peaches are rich in vitamin C and great for digestion. Cut your banana in half lengthwise, and grill for 3 minutes for a firmer fruit. Or you can leave the peel on the banana and slice it lengthwise. Wrap it in foil and grill until it reaches your desired texture. Scoop directly out of the peel; adding it as a topping.

44

Look Local Volume 3 | Issue 1

INGREDIENTS ü 2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil, divided ü 1 small or mini seedless watermelon cut into ½-inch thick slices then quarter cut into wedges/triangles ü 5 ounces baby arugula ü 1 shallot, peeled and thinly sliced (you can also use red onion or green onions) ü 2 limes, halved ü 2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled or cubed (optional) ü sea salt and black pepper, to taste

METHOD 1

Prepare a medium-hot grill. Using a paper towel, blot any surface moisture from the watermelon. Using 1 tablespoon of olive oil, very lightly brush the watermelon slices on both sides, as well as the cut side on the lime halves.

2 Grill the watermelon for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until charred with grill marks. You can cut the rinds off the watermelon and cube for serving, or leave in wedges, rind on or off. 3 Grill the halved limes over the heat, cut side down, until lightly charred and juicy, about 5 minutes. 4 Prepare a bed of the arugula on your serving platter. 5 Top with the grilled watermelon, sliced shallots and feta cheese. Drizzle with remaining olive oil, squeeze the juice from two of the charred lime halves over top, season with sea salt and black pepper, to taste. 6 Serve the salad with the other two lime halves.
