NEW GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES TO ASSIST FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS
First-time homebuyers purchasing newly built homes will be allowed 30-year amortization periods on insured mortgages, the federal government recently announced. The move is scheduled to take effect on August 1st. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland also recently declared that the government is increasing the amount first-time buyers can withdraw from their RRSPs to purchase a home from $35,000 to $60,000. This change became effective on April 16th – which was the date that the recent federal government budget was tabled. In addition, for withdrawals made between January 1st, 2022 and December 31st, 2025, individuals will be given five years to begin repayment rather than the original two. These changes are part of the government’s bid to make home ownership a reality for younger Canadians rather than just a dream.
