EDITOR’S LETTER

I

'm writing this just as the sun falls below the horizon – it’s a little after 8 p.m. A sign that hope is just around the bend. Warm evenings around the bonfire, little toes in the sand, birds chirping as the sun rises – new life, new reasons to laugh, new memories to be made. That’s the beautiful thing about Spring; it’s fresh and full of hope. And I have a feeling that beautiful days are ahead. Inspired by a desire to have my very own, this month’s Home and Garden story offers the perfect escape. Move over, man-cave; we’re staking claim on the She Shed! Did someone say cheese? Don’t hold it against us if this issue leaves you hungry. Our Food expert churned out a ripe story on local cheese (along with the perfect wine pairings), while our Special Feature celebrates our very own competitors at the World Butchers’ Challenge. The May long weekend is just around the corner – and did you know you can claim a rebate for local travel? Read all about the Ontario Staycation Credit in our Getaway feature. Speaking of getaways, it’s time to get your toes ready for the beach! Book your mani/pedi at one of our local day spas. Or, try out a new treatment at a med spa. Learn about the different treatments and packages available in our Health & Wellness feature. It’s long weekend season!

Women’s Mental Health by ANNELIESE LAWTON

I

always wanted to be a mom. In my heart, it was my calling – but things didn’t exactly go as planned. When my husband and I found out we were expecting our first baby, it was like a dream. When we found out our baby had abnormal prenatal test results, it became our worst nightmare. It wasn’t until after I had my second baby that I would be diagnosed with postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. By the time I sought help, it was almost too late. Prenatal and postpartum depression wasn’t supposed to happen to me, but depression doesn’t care. It doesn’t care how much you want something or how hard you try to pick yourself up. Sometimes, it sneaks into your life and takes all your joy with it. On May 14th, I’m joining thousands of walkers and runners across Canada in the Run for Women, brought to you by the LOVE YOU by Shopper’s Drug MartTM program. This program raises money for the women’s mental health program at St. Joseph’s HealthCare Hamilton Foundation. This program provides free mental health support to women when referred by a doctor, and it was there for me in my time of need.

As a second-generation butcher for 45 years, Goriup also competed in the Ontario’s Finest Butcher Competition, taking the title in 2017. As owners of Florence Meats, Damian and his wife Carol possess several of Ontario’s Finest Meat Awards and multiple Oakville Awards for Business Excellence. When asked, it was evident from their response that both men share a common concern; that there aren’t enough young people in the trade. They recognized that during the height of the pandemic, more people experimented at home with meats, rubs, spices, and preparation methods. And now a relationship with a local butcher has become more important than ever. “It’s important to encourage young people to take an interest in this trade. Being a butcher gives you a sense of pride in your community. We want to share that passion and create excitement for those coming up. This competition can give notoriety and credibility to a butcher for their craft,” explains Baarda.
