As we go to press with this issue of Look Local Mississauga, we are enjoying some of the warmest November weather ever, and Christmas and the traditional holiday season seems a long way away. It is going to be different this year, with most holiday parties cancelled or re-imagined and family gatherings much more limited. It certainly has been a tough year. But as we approach the end of it, I sense some glimmers of hope for 2021. We will get through this, and already the resilience and tenacity of our community over the last 8 months has been truly inspirational. Tips for bringing home the right tree for your family By KRISTY ELIK

ow lovely are thy branches! Until they start turning brown and dropping needles, that is. This Christmas, avoid Griswoldlike mishaps by heeding some tips from us and expert advice from Herridge’s Farm Fresh Market BEFORE you head out to find the ‘perfect’ holiday tree. First, think about where your tree will live. Avoid placing it near a heat source (think sunny windows, radiators, heating vents, and fireplaces). Keep it out of high traffic areas where it might be overturned or where someone might trip on light cords. Then, think about fit. Be sure to measure and record BOTH the ceiling height and the width of that space. Measure your tree stand to determine the maximum diameter of the trunk it will fit. Finally, measure the height of your tree stand as well as the height of your treetop decoration. When you head out to the tree lot, take a tape measure so you don’t take home a 9-foot tall tree to your 8 feet high ceiling! WHICH SPECIES TO CHOOSE? Herridge’s sells two main different categories of trees: firs and pines. “We don’t carry as many Scotch or white pine as we used to; they’re more traditional but not as strong as firs for holding ornaments,” explains Hillary Penn, manager of Herridge’s, “but they smell beautiful and their needles are much softer on the hands than fir needles.” looklocalmagazine.com

If you’re more inclined to choose a fir, balsams are by far the bestsmelling option, but Frasers are the strongest trees you can buy (and therefore the most expensive). Both types of fir are symmetrical and full—and great for packing with ornaments. DID YOU KNOW? Balsams grow much faster than Frasers which is why they are less expensive. Experts say that balsams are the Honda Civic of trees (safe, reliable, can’t go wrong) whereas Frasers are more like a Mercedes Benz. How can you tell if a tree is fresh? The needles should look shiny and green, not dry or brown, and they shouldn’t fall off when you pull on a branch. After you’ve decided and chosen The One, use heavy gloves to protect your hands and use an old blanket to protect your car from pine needles and sap. Take twine or rope to tie it securely to the car (unless you know the tree lot will provide this… Herridge’s does :)). Make sure a fresh cut is made before placing the tree in water. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water so your tree can start drinking as soon as it gets home.

HERRIDGE’S SUGGESTS: Give your tree about a day to open up before you decorate. Chances are, it was cold—even frozen—and was probably tied up so it will be stiff. The tree “relaxes” as it warms up so it will be easier to decorate. Place a plastic or waterproof covering on the floor where your tree will stand so you don't ruin the carpet or get watermarks on hardwood flooring. To keep loose needles off your floor, try putting the tree in the stand outside. Wherever you install it, you’ll need to tip the tree on its side and tighten the leveling clamps of the stand around the base of the trunk. Next, with help, lift the tree to a standing position, then make any needed adjustments in vertical alignment, so it stands straight. Finally, carry your tree (with the stand attached) to its new home and fill the water reservoir of the stand immediately. For the first few days, you may need to refill your tree’s water every few hours. Set a timer to remind you to check it. After about a week, water intake will slow down and daily refills should be fine.

HERRIDGE’S SUGGESTS: You can buy a tree solution that you mix with water in a specific ratio and add to the tree water (directions are always very clear on the bottle). Other people add sugar, crushed Advil or a bit of soda to the water. When it’s up, assess. If your tree is too tall, clip away stray branches but avoid chopping off the tallest vertical branch. This is usually a stiff branch and will be a steady foundation for the tree top decoration. If any of the lower branches look imperfect, trim them, but try to trim at an angle that is about parallel to the floor, so cuts are less noticeable. Use extra boughs and branches to decorate your mantle or table, keeping them in water until you arrange them. If you’re concerned about kids or pets knocking your tree over, be sure to secure it to a wall or a stable piece of furniture. Tie it securely in several places with fish line, twine, or cording attached to small eye hooks. Be sure that tie lines are out of reach. he idea that spending time in nature is good for our health is not new. Most of human evolutionary history was spent in environments without walls. Our bodies have adapted to living in the natural world.
But today most of us spend much of our life indoors, and/or tethered to devices. Even in a pre-COVID world—a time with no lockdowns, restrictions or threat of infection, many of us still spent the majority of our time indoors. A study by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) found that the average person spends 93 per cent of their life indoors; that is, 87 per cent in a building and another six per cent in some type of automobile. So the fact is, we spend only 7 per cent of our time outside. The Nature Conservancy of Canada also conducted a study in which 75 per cent of respondents reported finding it “easier” to stay inside, referring to rain, snow and insects as deterrents. Considering we’re in the midst of a global pandemic, unsettled weather or bugs may be the least of our worries, and truly, any encounter with nature would prove beneficial, especially now.
Enter the practice of forest bathing. Most parks and conservation areas are once again open, so this is the opportune time to discover the well-documented benefits of the Japanese practice of “shinrin-yoku”. Shinrin in Japanese means “forest,” and yoku means “bath.” Therefore, shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses. Not to be confused with hiking, forest bathing is not undertaken with the primary goal of physical exercise. “It’s an immersive, meditative and intentional walk in the woods,” says David Motzenbecker, certified forest therapy guide. “It’s taking in all the forest air with all your senses.” Here’s the science: With each breath of that forest air, phytoncides are inhaled, which are airborne chemicals naturally released by plants to protect themselves from disease. natural chemicals, our bodies respond by increasing the number and activity of a type of white blood cell called natural killer cells or NK, known to boost immune function. Other documented benefits include lower blood pressure, reduced stress, improved mood and increased energy levels. In Japan, shinrin-yoku is so highly regarded that the government has designated special trails for the practice. Each one offers loosely targeted health benefits. So how does one practice forest bathing? Wherever the trees are, just go be still in nature. Take it in, observe the forest around you in one location for 20 to 30 minutes. In this spot, connect, hear and feel the different textures and notice the different colours. Experts highly recommend using a certified guide to lead you. The role of a guide is not identifying flora and fauna, but rather facilitating the contemplative experience, offering participants “invitations� to interact with the forest in a meaningful and healing way.

Karen Chaplin, who leads a Mississauga Facebook group called Forest Wanderer—Shinran Yoku Mississauga, is working towards certification from the Global Institute of Forest Therapy and offers frequent guided walks, often leading her participants to discover parts of the city they never knew existed. “We get to places that are deeper than those you’d explore by yourself,” she says, “spots with no human distractions.” The stresses of life are dangerously high right now. “We have nurtured ourselves to be in an incessantly low-level state of fight or flight,” Motzenburger explains. “Our nervous systems… our bodies were not designed to be in that constant state of stress. It’s bad for us.” A forest bath can help relieve that tension. In the midst of this unprecedented chaos, this may be just the thing we all need right now. An Italian twist on the Mexican favourite INGREDIENTS 2 ounces 100% agave ü blanco tequila
2 ounces 100% pomegranate ü juice (not cocktail)
1 ounce lime juice ü
(plus wedges for garnish)
2 ounces Prosecco ü 1 handful pomegranate arils ü METHOD
