To-Dos To Prep Your Home For

Winter

s much as we love the fall season and the return to routine, it also reminds us of a colder season on the way and the maintenance we need to consider to be ready for a Canadian winter. Here's our to-do list for winter prep inside and outside the home.

Put away outdoor furniture and turn off faucets.

While outdoor furniture is designed to endure the climate, covering it in winter will prolong its life. Wipe down furniture first and store in the garage or cover with a tarp in the backyard.

Unhook outdoor garden hoses and turn off exterior valves. Store hoses in a garage or basement to prevent freezing and bursting.

Maintain your HVAC system.

It's not unusual to get a slight burning smell when turning on your furnace the first time, as dust and debris can accumulate on the heater when it's not in use. If you smell smoke or the smell persists, turn your system off and call a professional.

If you haven't already done so, change your furnace filter. As a rule of thumb, the thicker the filter, the longer it will last. One- to two-inch filters should be replaced every three months. Four- to five-inch filters can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. If you have pets, they should be changed more often.

Seal windows and doors.

Check your windows and doors for holes in screens, cracks in moulding, or old, hardened seals. Gaps allow pests like ants, spiders, and mice to enter your home. It's simple to install new weatherstripping or re-caulk windows and doors, saving you money in the long run. A tight seal will keep cold air out and warm air in, making you much more comfortable while keeping those gas and hydro bills down.

Prep your lawn.

If you're tired of seeing those ugly dead patches of grass in the spring, take time to prepare your lawn for winter so you can avoid snow mould. Fallen leaves and debris prevent light from getting to the grass and will trap moisture, leading to mould. Rake or blow off leaves regularly, so they don't build up and end up trapped under the snow. Keep mowing your lawn until the first frost and maintain a length of 2.5 to 3 inches which prevents matting and mould, but is also long enough to protect the roots from cold.

Prep your gardens.

Most perennials require deadheading in the fall. It helps produce more foliage and flowers in spring and makes your yard look nice and tidy. Plants like hostas and flocks should be cut back to the ground as the leaves become slimy or mouldy late in the season. Potted plants and bulbs should come indoors, and annuals should be pulled out and put at the curb as yard waste.

Switch your ceiling fan.

Most of us don't realize that ceiling fans have a reverse switch for winter. In summer, the blades turn counterclockwise, which pulls warm air up and gives us that "breeze” during hot weather. When we switch the blades to spin clockwise, they push the warm air back down helping to maintain heat in the home.

Check fire alarms and CO2 detectors.

Set your annual calendar to check your fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at least once a year. When windows are closed and furnaces are on, there's a much higher risk of house fires and CO2 poisoning. Run routine tests to ensure your detectors are in good working order and replace them every few years.

Clean your gutters.

While you may groan at the thought of cleaning your gutters, it's of critical importance if you are surrounded by trees. Water and debris can freeze during the winter and cause them to break or fall. This can cause damage to the home, which can be a costly repair. To avoid cleaning next year, consider installing a gutter guard which prevents debris from accumulating while allowing rainwater to flow through.

Fall Curb Appeal

The blaze of red, gold and orange is Mother Nature’s note that fall is here. Make your home one that says “welcome” to all with some fall touches that also add great curb appeal. The best part is that most of the elements are ones you can gather around the house and near where you live. And if your home has a for sale sign out front, nothing is as captivating to a buyer’s eye as a home with the warmth of fall colours.

LEAVES AND LAWN

An emerald lawn is never as beautiful as it is with a smattering yellow and red leaves, but there can be too much of a good thing. Keep up the maintenance on your lawn by keeping it trimmed and leaves raked from the grass and blown from the sidewalks and driveway. Be sure to keep up with edging, and trim up any dead limbs or branches from trees and shrubs so the yard looks tidy and attractive.

In your planting beds, add a mix of fall flowers. Even just of few inexpensive and abundant mums planted near the porch entry will perk up the house and the landscape. Give your mailbox some attention with a garland of fall leaves and a pot of mums at the base.

GUTTERS AND FIXTURES

Keep the roof and gutters neat with frequent cleanings. Doing so will make your home look better and also help prevent damage from backed up gutters over the winter. Give your home’s lamppost and light fixtures a wash and polish. Outdoor fixtures that sparkle are always a part of wonderful curb appeal. You may also want to add a decorative element, wrapping a light pole with dried corn and fall florals.

FRONT DOOR/STOOP

More than any other place on your home, your front door conveys a message of welcome. If it needs a paint touchup, grab the paintbrush before the cool temps settle in and while you still have a warm afternoon or two left to get the job done. Add a new doormat and a grouping of fall accents to draw the eyes of passersby. A seasonal wreath on the door will add a nice touch, as will some pumpkins, a lantern with a candle, and urns or a pot with a mix of fall plants.

Create your own fall planters using the landscaping design credo of fill, thrill and spill. Try an urn with some tall fall grasses, a mum or colorful proton or decorative cabbage and a plant like creeping jenny or English ivy to spill out of the container. A punch of green, like the chartreuse potato plant, will bring a spark to your planters and your door.

EXTRAS

Add some inexpensive burlap pillows to chairs or porch swing. For the adventurous, carve out pumpkins and fill in with mums and fall plants to create a fun fall grouping.
