Second Time Around is a consignment store that has served Waterdown for more than 35 years, dressing clients for every milestone or for their everyday pleasure. “We help ladies refresh their wardrobe and turn over their old to new favourites, while saving the environment and their wallets,” says Store Owner Bev Micheli.
When a local singer-songwriter recently entered Second Time Around, Micheli says, “We had the pleasure of curating her on-stage look while listening to her fabulous music on Spotify. She found maybe four or five outfits, with boots, belt and jewellery. The customer was over the moon, as was I. She looked beautiful in all of them.”
Bungalo Beach is another popular vintage consignment shop where consumers buy and sell quality apparel and jewellery. Their flagship Waterdown store occupies the main level of a downtown heritage building. A small cafe within — featuring coffee from local fave Peach Coffee Co. — further enhances the shopping experience.
When it comes to cleaning and caring for your coveted fashion finds, garments are in good hands at Waterdown Laundromat & Drycleaners. Meet the local experts ready to get you back online, on the road, out of hot water and all stitched up
Ascreen glitch or temperamental keypad doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to invest in a new phone or laptop. Tech junkies wanting the latest gadgets might not realize it, but “something that’s two years old often has the same software as a new device,” says Alex Jankovic, Manager at Cell Phone Fox. For the past seven years, his shop has saved people money and kept devices out of landfills by repairing their computers and cell phones.
In the spirit of extending a product’s life, Weeks Home Hardware has an in-store small engine repair shop that services lawn equipment. “We also offer chain and scissor sharpening as well as screen repair, glass and Plexi glass cutting,” says Lynne Lynham, Weeks’ Seasonal Manager and Assistant Store Manager.
The range of fix-it talent in this town is impressive. When a treasured piece of jewellery breaks, the experts at Waterdown Goldsmith have the tools and skills to resize, reshank, rebuild, restring or replace. AJ Professional Alterations will expertly hem pants or adjust the fit of a blouse right on the premises. And when your sewer drain is gurgling or you need a new water heater, your friendly neighbourhood plumbers at Taylor’s Plumbing have got you covered.
Need help with a design project? Your Floors & More provides one-onone customer service and high-quality products at an affordable price. Their community spirit is palpable.
“We have barstools at our counter in the showroom for a reason: our customers are like family to us and treated that way!” says Jenny Lawson. In addition to flooring, the store sells vanities, plumbing fixtures and other renovation essentials.
A properly designed storage space greatly enhances the appeal and functionality of any room. Closet Envy designs and installs closets, garages, pantries, and other storage solutions. They pride themselves on doing meticulous work – and their lumber is sourced from Canada. “Each project is custom designed, and tailored to the available space and needs of the homeowner,” says Owner Shaun Oriold.
Proudly serving Waterdown since 1963, Turkstra Lumber caters to everyone in the building materials business at every level of experience. Whether you’re a weekend DIYer in need of project-specific advice, a professional contractor, or a large volume builder, their knowledgeable staff can assist with projects great and small.
“We are more than just a lumber yard,” says Ian MacNaughton, Branch Manager at Turkstra Lumber - Waterdown. “We cater to all aspects of home building, renovations, and weekend projects.” After several decades in this market, MacNaughton says, “we still have some customers who shopped here when we first opened!”
Every community needs a trusted auto mechanic. Jay’s Auto Services’ two locations — both in Waterdown — are a neighbourhood institution for service on all makes and models. Down-to-earth customer service has helped build their loyal clientele.

“We have whole families of customers that are second, third generation or more,” says Jeff Bydevaate, Service Advisor and Technician at the Flamboro Street shop. Though he has seen Waterdown grow exponentially, Bydevaate says it remains a tight knit community that values personalized service. “The vibe I get from customers is, ‘My neighbour told me not to go anywhere else.’”
Caring for a vehicle is also about making it sparkle. “I think our car wash is uniquely suited for people who really like to baby their vehicles,” says Dan Husack, Manager at Midtown Carwash. A wash at Midtown is touchless, so there’s no microscratching (that cobweb that eventually deepens, dulling the shine). “My truck is a 2018 and this week someone asked me if I got a new one,” Husack says. “I use our car wash almost daily, so the proof is in the pudding.”
This town has it all. We salute these professionals who dedicate their skill and passion to fixing what’s broken, improving our homes, and ensuring that our daily lives run smoothly. W

MEET LOCAL ANIMAL LOVERS DEDICATED TO CARING FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND
It’s a dog’s world, especially in family-friendly neighbourhoods. Here in Waterdown Village, an impressive number of small businesses exist for one common passion — offering every pet a positive, uniquely tailored experience. Just take a stroll around our parks and streets to feel the vibe.
“Waterdown is a community that actively works to make sure their fourlegged friends are included and have public spaces designed to keep them safe and happy,” says Manager Melanie Soder at Chews Raw Inc.
Chews sells a variety of pet foods and supplies. In particular they meet pet owners’ growing desire for a more natural, healthy and species appropriate diet. Proponents of raw food say it builds stronger immune systems and is great for pets’ digestion, skin, coat, and dental health.
“When pet owners hear the benefits of a raw diet and other success stories from their friends and family, it gets them looking at their own pets' food bowl and the changes they can make,” Soder says.
Pet parents in Waterdown are also grateful to Global Pet Foods and Pet Valu for their commitment to providing holistic food, expertise, and more. Both of these popular pet supply retailers proudly carry an array of Canadian-made products.

Aside from nutrition, training is a crucial aspect of dog ownership. “We train in people’s neighbourhoods, in the downtown core, and in our facility, which makes us accessible for a variety of people,” says Holly Forrest, Certified Trainer at True Instincts Dog Training. The facility offers both private and group training for puppies — promoting behaviours that will help them socialize, communicate, and stay safe — as well as “behaviour modification” training for dogs of any age whose habits you’re looking to change.
Looking for a groomer who will treat your dog like family? Underdog & Co. promises gentle, tender care — from bubble bath and nail trimming to haircut and blowdry. “The dogs we have the privilege of caring for know they are loved when they’re in our shop, and there’s nothing more important than that,” says Bailey Forgeron, the company’s Owner and Operator.
Furry Friends Pet Grooming is another favourite spot for dogs who take pride in their appearance. In the heart of downtown Waterdown, this trusted provider offers a range of services, notably full grooms that include baths, drying, nail trims, sanitary cuts, and de-shedding or lion cuts.
When choosing a veterinary facility, pet owners want compassionate care, excellent customer service, and experienced, highly recommended practitioners.
“We provide very compassionate holistic and individualized care tailored to the pet and owner needs,” says Theresa Ibrahem, Practice Manager at Parkside Animal Hospital. This family-run business treats pets of all ages and life stages. They offer the full gamut, including surgical and dental services, behaviour therapy, diagnostics, health promotion, and house visits.
Another trusted full-service veterinary clinic is Waterdown Animal Hospital, whose mission is “to offer a warm, caring environment where each and every patient is cherished and celebrated.”
Equally committed to superior pet care is the team at Watzin Veterinary Clinic, serving Waterdown for 26 years and counting. The Watzin clinic has greatly expanded its space and prides itself on being a Fear Free facility.
These local pet-loving businesses are grateful to the humans who support them. In the words of Bailey Forgeron of Underdog & Co, “The pet owners of Waterdown are simply lovely. The community of people we have been blessed to become a part of are some of the kindest humans we’ve had the pleasure of knowing. We love people who love their dogs, and in Waterdown, there’s a lot of that love going around.” W
SANDWICHES IN THIS TOWN ARE THE GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD
f the three official meals of the day, lunch doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Sandwiched between breakfast and dinner, it’s often a dine-and-dash, scarf it down at your desk kind of ritual. But speaking of sandwiches, local chefs and creators of hand-held delights want you to slow down and savour the taste.
“Fresh bread with quality ingredients is why people love our sandwiches so much,” says Tiffany Drong, Owner and Operator of Drongkowskis Farm Market and Deli. This beloved downtown deli serves up classics like bacon and egg, chicken club, as well as signature items with their own twist, like the Breakfast Avocadokowski. Also on the menu are fresh salads and smoothies. The Waterdown location offers both takeaway and a sit-in option.
“We pride ourselves in supporting local, with a farm to fork approach using Ontario meats and cheeses,” Drong says. “We even have our own gourmet mustard line that makes each and every sandwich a gastro experience.”
Garcia’s Sandwich Shop puts its own gourmet spin on traditional Italian foods, using Ontario-raised meats, kaiser buns baked locally, and the addition of gluten-free, vegetarian and build-your-own options. Among their special features are Italian-style hot sandwiches made with either eggplant, veal, pork, chicken, meatballs, or steak, complete with all the mouth-watering fixin’s –onions, mushrooms, peppers, and Garcia’s homemade tomato sauce.

Aside from being a popular lunch spot, Garcia’s offers catering, a hot lunch school lunch program, and happily supports community events. “It’s not just a spot to get together for coffee, ice cream, lunch or dinner but to have authentic Italian meals,” says Derryk Garcia, the restaurant’s Owner. “We love building relationships with our community and making everyone feel like family.”
Another well-known lunch destination, which operates on a much larger scale, is Pane Fresco at your local Fortinos. “Chef-made, ready to eat, Pane Fresco is real food,” says Miklos Kanalas, Franchisee at the Waterdown location. “That’s why our customers love it!”
Pane Fresco offers healthy salads, 16 signature soups, unique Roman pizzas, a sushi and noodle bar, and at least 15 varieties of sandwiches and wraps. Asked what he’d call their signature item, Kanalas raves about the Prime Rib Sandwich. “It’s the best around!” he says. “Oven roasted Prime Rib beef, carved and served on a fresh baked ciabatta bun, then topped with caramelized onions, cheese and truffle mayo. Literally mouthwatering, this sandwich is savoury and satisfying. A definite must try.”
Locals go crazy for the fritters at Copper Kettle Cafe, but it’s also a great place to grab lunch. On the menu are more than a dozen sandwiches of the deli, cheesy, veggie or melty variety. If you’re looking for a crispy, decadent hand-held treat, the breaded chicken sandwiches at Hello Iris come in Regular, Spicy, BBQ Bacon, Lemon Dill, or Jalapeno Hot Ranch.
Waterdown’s celebrated food sector is proof that lunch on the run doesn’t need to involve traditional fast food or empty calories. Goodness Me! is a great place to stop for a sandwich or wrap. “Enjoy your food with confidence, knowing it is made from real wholesome ingredients,” says Kaila Rosa, the store’s Marketing Coordinator. This natural food market is for everyone, whether you're health-conscious or just looking for quality, local food & natural supplements. Offering organic, natural, and specialty foods, including gluten-free, vegan, and non-GMO options, it’s the perfect place to find wholesome groceries and supplements.
Goodness Me! sandwiches include Turkey & Brie Baguette, Vegan BLT, or one of Rosa’s favourites – the Chicken Pesto Club made with organic produce, provolone, free run chicken, nitrate free bacon, and in-house pesto mayo, on a focaccia bun.
If your salivary glands are awakening, you’re not alone. Take a break. Let’s lunch! W

t the heart of Aldente Dentistry is a tight knit group of women who embody compassion and empathy.
“I believe we have created a supportive community, with a culture of caring, for our patients and each other” says Dr. Johanna Schae er.
Aldente Dentistry recently moved to Waterdown (located at the Fortino’s plaza), but has been caring for Waterdown residents for decades! The practice started in Freelton in 1983 and moved to Carlisle in 1986. Dr. Schae er and Dr. Isaacs (retired), a husband and wife team, have led the practice since 2009.
Aldente Dentistry’s longest serving team members, including Sharon Henwood (since 1983, Dental Assistant & Administrator), Joyce Anderson (1986, Office Manager), and Jeanette Parkin (1996, Registered Dental Hygienist), have provided leadership, consistency, and stability through the years.
Having a longstanding and stable team is the key to success. “Patients know. You can walk into the office and hear laughter! A happy, loyal team is at the heart of that positive atmosphere.” It is this positive space and team that keeps generations of families coming back.
As Dr. Schaeffer marks her 23rd year as a dentist, she reflects on a career she truly loves. She and the team care for patients of all ages, providing a range of treatments from preventive care to cosmetic and implant options. The focus is prevention, and Aldente takes that to local schools, teaching our youngest how to build healthy habits.
In addition to the oral health education program, Aldente Dentistry maintains a commitment to the youth of the community by sponsoring music programs at several schools including
Jeanette Parkin teaching grade 1 students using our mascot alligator Al
Waterdown District High School, supporting local food banks, and collaborating with other community partners. “No one achieves success alone. The cycle of helping each other is one we want to be a part of, and one that builds wonderful neighbourhoods.”
SINCE 1983.
New patients always welcomed. Thank you to all longstanding patients for the continued support!
