INSPIRING KIDS INTERIOR DESIGNERS The United States have always been one of the world’s strongest market in the design industry. From Frank Lloyd Wright to Frank Gehry, the US have largely contributed to the design and architecture world throughout the years. The demands of the internal market are at an all-time high as people are beginning to realize that a house is more than a home – it’s your personal retreat, a safe haven. One of the most complex rooms of the house is the kids’ bedroom. All the safety measures that have to be taken into consideration plus comfort and play space are a pack of variables that make this equation incredibly tricky. Thankfully, alongside architecture and conventional interior design, the kids’ universe has too developed throughout the years, as more and more interior designers took an interest in this faction. It’s a niche, we won’t lie, but, inside this niche, there’s a lot of hard work and talent. On this ebook, you’ll find some of the amazing work these designers have done throughout the past few years in US soil and why we have picked them as some of the best interior designers for kids in America. We hope to inspire you on your quest of designing your own kids’ space and to achieve the design of your dreams.

CARRIE LIVINGSTON Since a very young age, Carrie Livingston knew exactly what she wanted to do when she grows up: design beautiful spaces. Her first project? Carrie’s youth bedroom. The money the young designer-to-be made by babysitting was more than enough to revamp her bedroom, and new design talent has emerged. A few years have gone by and Carrie moved to New York, where her career took a major impulse, as she worked for Ralph Lauren Home for 8 years. There, the designer obtained a much valuable experience, as she worked on incredible projects such as the Double RL Ranch, the Ralph Lauren Airstream and the Jamaica House, just to name very few of her accomplished career at the American House. Like that, her sophisticated design signature was born – a tasteful miasma of classic and modern elements, complemented with her love for vintage elements she finds and her passion for art. It was later in 2004 that the designer took the leap her career longed for: the opening of Carrie Livingston Design firm in New York City. Ever since then, Carrie has opened an additional office in London and, to complement her wide bouquet of services, Carrie launched a luxurious furniture line which takes her projects to a whole new level. “To me, good design is a collaboration of location, feeling and time,” noted Livingston. “I take each project as a unique opportunity to do something impactful and unexpected but in an accessible and livable way.” – Carrie Livingston The designer now runs her design firm from her Beverly Hills and London offices, as well as she helps raise awareness for noble causes. Back in 2011, Carrie opened her penthouse office to the public as a pop-up gallery to help raise funds for UCLA’s Early Childhood Hospitalization program. The exhibit, called Blurred Lines, featured some of Livingston’s favorite artists like Rey Gost, Sarah Baley and Mark Hanauer and its success have spurred on a full-time charity called Generous, aimed at benefiting educators of children with autism.

DESIGNS BY HUMAN Joe Human, the principal designer and CEO of Designs by Human, isn’t your standard interior designer. Born and raised in the countryside of Idaho, Joe looked up to his father, who was a builder who created minimalist yet incredibly sophisticated abstract art pieces. With such a role model in his life, it was only natural Joe would develop a sharp creative instinct that would lead him to the interior design path. Joe’s attention to detail is unique in the industry, and his ability to mix and match patterns, textures and materials take him to a whole new level. For example, his Fort Greene Modern Scandinavian project is the perfect example of Human’s universe: strikingly beautiful simplicity with fun, modern and whimsical notes. For Joe and the whole team at Designs by Human, the clients are the main inspiration source for creativity. It is with the client’s first wishes and desires that the team draws up the project with the end goal of creating a space that is both comfortable and able to reflect the clients’ personality and lifestyle. The secret behind Designs by Human’s success is the relationships the company creates with the various intervenients. Clients, vendors, contractors, friends and family, all of them have a space in the firm’s core. For them, there’s no such thing as a small project. What could be a small project today might turn into something huge the day after, like planting a tree. The seed is small and vulnerable, but with all the nurturing and care, the seed transforms into something monumental, just like the projects developed by Designs by Human.

NAOMI ALON

Interior design is filled with riddles and challenges to overcome. They say a bolt of lightning never strikes twice on the same spot, and we can surely adapt that metaphor to this industry. Every project’s different from the previous one. Now let’s take that to a whole new level, which is designing kids’ spaces. In order for us to better understand the challenges of an interior designer who specializes in making the little ones feeling special, we spoke with Naomi Alon, founder and designer of Little Crown Interiors. Naomi’s creative modern bohemian interiors allow children to pursue their most creative thoughts while maintaining a stylish and calm environment. Naomi has always been an avid art enthusiast, which made her enroll in a studio art degree in college. From there, her passion for interior design flourished thus the designer loves the idea of matching from with function. Her sensitivity to her surroundings encouraged her to design and re-imagine the space around her. As far as Naomi remembers, design was always her number one priority, professionally speaking of course. The designer even used to make small vignettes in her bedroom and decorate them with art. It was something that was inlaid in the bedrock of her being, and once school was over, the excitement of it becoming a reality was unmeasurable. The projects Little Crown Interiors and, of course, Naomi work on are entirely nurseries and child spaces. Their naturally embedded colorful and whimsical concepts are what made Naomi focus on this incredible tricky branch. Add that to be working with people on probably the most important part of their life, pregnancy, and you got yourself an incredible cocktail of satisfaction and fulfillment. Little Crown Interiors work on everything ranging from nurseries to teen spaces, but Naomi’s favorite type of projects are indeed nurseries. It’s a white canvas where she can paint the future parents’ picture. It’s the idea of guiding soon-to-be parents to what they have always wanted for their child that drives Naomi in her work. Little Crown Interiors’ signature style lies upon what Naomi calls Modern Bohemian, even though her works swerves from style to style in each and every project. The common ground between them all is her inclination towards light and bright and soft colors, splashed with the enough amount of glamour. Naomi’s work is incredibly conditioned by safety measures

23

that can’t just be looked the other way. It is hard for the designer to tell the soon-to-be parents that something they want on the nursery can’t be used because it is a safety hazard. Furthermore, it is safe to speculate that Naomi’s biggest challenge is to design incredible spaces with all these conditioning situations. The project Naomi enjoyed the most to work on was one of her earliest ones. The client’s house in Orange County, California was entirely white, but the idea for the nursery was the complete opposite. The client’s wishes for the nursery was to be an incredible burst of color. Hot Pink and Silver wallpaper set the joyful mood to the room, providing the child a fun and stimulating environment for the kid to grow up. Naomi stated that working on kids spaces it is challenging but fun nevertheless. To work alongside the children is something she loves, especially when the children give their own opinions and ideas during design meetings, even though she can’t entirely take their word. The designer is incredibly meticulous while planning her work. To have an

organized plan for her projects is of extreme importance as Naomi works on several at the same time. Naomi believes that what sets her and Little Crown Interiors apart from other practices is that there really aren’t many designers who focus on kids’ spaces. She stated that she merely knows a handful in the entire country. Moreover, her

“WORKING ON KIDS SPACES IT IS CHALLENGING BUT FUN NEVERTHELESS.”

experience in the field, having done over 200 children’s spaces, puts her on a level that very few worldwide can reach. To work in Los Angeles is incredibly fun for the designer. Even though Naomi is based in Orange County, a more suburban area, most of her clients are from L.A. The city really appreciates design, in Naomi’s opinion, and there’s a whole bouquet of

24

resources available which makes her work easier. Furthermore, her clients are well open-minded which allows her to pursue her vision and wishes for the spaces. Partnerships with other firms aren’t strange grounds for Naomi. If a practice is working on a major project that includes a kids’ space, she consults with them as it involves a very different skillset to design it, such as safety measures and the best furniture brands. While working with an architect during the building phase, Naomi can look upon the plans and catch safety hazards that unexperienced eyes in the game would normally miss. To finish up, Naomi stated that her dream project would be to work on her own house. Poetically tragic, the designer spends so much time designing all day on other people’s projects that when it comes to her own, she can’t find the time to do much. To give her house a refresh is something she’d love to do.
