Iconic SL Models

Mimmi Boa Author: Laetitia Vella Pictures by Nala Kurka plus pictures showing Mimmi’s career from Skip Staheli and Kade Klata

laetitia vella

Laetitia Vella & Nala Kurka Mimmi Boa is a woman who needs no introduction to those interested in the fashion world of Second Life®. Since rezzing in May 2007, she has added countless pearls to the string of accomplishments that complement her natural beauty and elegance. Crowned Miss Virtual World in 2009 and Miss Bliss Couture in 2010, her excellence as a model and stylist is admired by all. She is a muse to countless designers and a role model and inspiration to innumerable models who look to her for inspiration. Committed to helping others achieve their goals, she heads the Mimmi Boa Modeling Academy, one of the most respected schools in Second Life®, and is a co-owner of Solo Evane Modeling Agency. In addition to all this, Mimmi is one of the most gracious and generous people you might ever chance to meet. Interviewing her for this article has been a delight for which Nala and I are very grateful. The photographs are from Nala’s shoot with her, as well as those provided by Mimmi from her collection. The text of the interview has been lightly edited by Laetitia, at Mimmi’s request. What drew you to modeling in the first place? What is it that keeps you involved? Mimmi: Fashion has always been a sort of fixation in the family. My mother, aunty and my grandmother were true icons of style and I was raised that way, following their suggestions and creating my own look. My Mum always repeated: “Remember that if people copy your style it will mean that your style makes the difference; in this way you can be a model to follow!”

From 14 to 21 years of age, I worked as a model for photographers and for a famous agency in Milano. It goes without saying that after a first ‘orientation’ impact here in Second Life®, I was tempted to go into the world of virtual fashion and, step by step, Mimmi Boa has become known in the field. After so many years here, I am not as often online as I was before but I remain committed working as a teacher, model and stylist. What keeps me ‘glued’ to Second Life® is my deep love for fashion; what keeps me here are my dear friends, the kindness of those who believe in me, the talent of the designers that never fail to send their items to me to have a frank and honest opinion and above all the love of my students and my staff! What is one (or more) of the most cherished memories of your career? Mimmi: As you can imagine, I had a wonderful time in this virtual world and I keep in my heart a lot of unforgettable memories. Which of these wonderful moments can I describe to you? First of all, when I was crowned Miss Virtual World 2009. What a wonderful time I had and let me say I can’t forget the tons of laughs, the emotions, the adventures and the complicity shared with other pageant contestants. I remember we were amazed by all that was around us. We were fair, honest and ready to help each other! I was a beautiful, fun, exciting experience and most of the ladies I met in that occasion still are a part of my life! Another unforgettable moment was when my mentor and friend Dea Mills [founder and first CEO of Modavia] wrote me a note (which I still have) in which she confessed to me that

Mimmi Boa

12

Laetitia Vella & Nala Kurka from the very first moments when she saw me, she knew that I would become the first fashion icon and the mother of all supermodels in Second Life®. She was the first to believe in me and my first fan! I miss her so much! You are an icon in the fashion world and a role model to young models. To what do you attribute your success? Mimmi: I’ve always been a hard worker, a researcher, an experimentalist. I am not satisfied with the first result and I am committed to the extreme to get a final result that is amazing.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? It is obvious to say: - Miss Virtual World 2009 - Miss Bliss Couture 2010 - Miss Best of Fashion 2008 - nominated Best Model of the Year 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 - nominated Avatar of the Year 2011 But my biggest achievement has been to help the orphanage of Maseno, Kenya, in 2009 with almost $5000, the result of our effort in Second Life® with the unforgettable ‘Maseno Project’.

And, last but not least, what makes me Clearly, the new generation of models has immensely proud is the love and respect understood that to become someone (and that my students, my staff and my models have for me. not only in Second Life®), they have to work hard and put forward all the best During the time you’ve been efforts of their heart, blood and sweat. modeling, there have been many changes in modeling and the I am also convinced that we transfer fashion world. What do you think to this virtual world part of our true character and attitude. If you are a leader has changed for the better? for the worse? When you look at the current in ‘real live’, it is easy to be a leader also Second Life® fashion scene, what do here. you think could be improved? The secret of my success is to believe in me; I don’t give up even when everything Mimmi: I hate to say it but I regret the loss of the ‘old days’ of fashion in Second seems to collapse. Life®. We had fewer resources, there was less I urge my students and my models to perfection, everything was more ‘raw’ but persevere, to be motivated and to be we were motivated, passionate, full of nice and humble, forgetting every diva enthusiasm! We ‘breathed’ a different air. attitude. I hate the divas… especially because in most cases they are fake!

Currently we have the best items and designers can create masterpieces. Clothes, skins, shoes and all things are realistic and close to perfection – but what is not perfect are the brains of many

Mimmi Boa

people who are driving this virtual work to remake the worst of what we have in real life. I strongly believe that people should look at Second Life® as a place in which to demonstrate their skills, relax, meet people from all over the world, have fun. The world of virtual fashion can give immense satisfaction, thanks to the talents of many people. One of the most noticeable changes in the fashion business is that up to a few years ago, the virtual designers were influenced primarily by real life designers and trends in the real world. Now some ‘real’ designers sometimes take inspiration from ‘virtual’ designers and it is not uncommon for some of them to love to advertise their brand with virtual models! This is a kind of ‘revolution’ because it means that our virtual artists are improving in an incredible way to be better (sometimes) than the real life ones. In addition to modeling, you have a very successful and well-respected modeling academy. What words of advice do you have for aspiring models? What would you like new models to keep in mind as they begin their career? Mimmi: I love to teach and I love my students. My lessons are not only the usual

technical lessons but a mix of advice, tips, suggestions and experiences shared and commented upon. A lot of people want to be a model because it’s glamorous, interesting and so cool and you might want to be recognized in the modeling world. Modeling is extremely competitive and the industry is filled with rejection, but successful models are doing something that they love. Here are some major truths about becoming a model: “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” The first step I teach is the importance of uniqueness. In Second Life® it is easy to be beautiful; you only need some money and good taste and you can create a great avatar – but this is not enough to be a model! Beauty is nothing without uniqueness and personality and actually in the fashion system of Second Life® the bar is very high, so my first suggestion is to experiment and test looks that can represent you and your own soul but with an innovative look! I usually tell my models: “Be creative, dare to be different, let people turn their heads when they see you!!!” And to be clear, I want to share with you one of my favorite quotes. “Do not copy others, let others copy you!!!”

Decide which kind of woman/ man you want to be. It is very important to be recognizable so try to be faithful to one typology. For example, if you want to be a red Irish woman/man put all your efforts and creativity into working on that look – and the same if you want to be a Creole queen, a Swedish blonde baby or whatever you want to be! Remember it is very important to have something that makes you unforgettable – do you remember the mole of Cindy Crawford or the adorable masculine haircut of Nadege du Bospertus??? Let me say also you cannot go very far if you do not have confidence in what you do and who you are. You need to believe in yourself, have self-confidence but also be realistic. Assuming you have a beautiful face and body, they are still not enough to ensure success. There are certain things you need to succeed in any field and, besides the mentioned uniqueness, you must be professional, in love with fashion, humble, nice, with NO DIVA attitude, passionate and always ready to smile. Be the best PR of yourself, educate yourself: there is a lot you can learn from blogging, fashion events, shows and, of course, in the good academies. But do not forget we can’t teach good taste and attitude; they are in your DNA!

Mimmi Boa in Real Life

that personality is the most important thing! What would you be willing to share with our readers of who is the Mimmi ‘behind’ the talented and successful fashion icon? Could you mark two or three of your real life skills or characteristics that you have transferred to Second Life®? The ‘true’ Mimmi that is called Isabella today is a lady who has had an adventurous life! I thank God for the qualities that He gave me and my mother and my grannies for teaching me to live respecting others with a heart full of love and compassion, besides being a fighter when there is need to fight! My real life looks like a movie… such an adventure full of amazing things and horrible tragedies… a life in black or white… without shades. In my life I’ve done a bit of everything, being a model, speaker, singer, dj, teacher, journalist. I have known love, passion, despair, tragedy, illness, rebirth. I learned to fight for my rights and to not be afraid to say “NO”, looking people straight in the eye. I’ve learned that life may seem unfair but that for everything that happens there is a reason. To Second Life® I’ve brought my ‘lust for life’, my taste, my playfulness, my strength and my weaknesses (which are many). I am 100% satisfied when I know I can and have helped people to gain more confidence. Second Life® is a way for being better and less unsure than in real life. I try to make others understand that self-confidence is so important and

I am proud of myself in both lives but I know it is not possible to be indifferent to me; I am the one you either love or you hate! You’ve accomplished so much. Do you have future goals and plans you would like to share? Mimmi: Isabella pushed Mimmi to be a perfectionist, full of energy and motivation, with an enormous love for fashion and all that surrounds it! I am the same here and in real life… I am in love with fashion, with people, with life and I am speechless when I think of the immense number of things we now and continually day after day learn in both lives. My school, my agency, the collaboration with some magazines and artists will stay my priorities in Second Life®, so I can say that surely I’ll be back on the catwalks after a long pause. In the last year my real life has moved me away a bit from Second Life® and, as you can understand the priority is my main life, but despite the fact that I am not very often online I can tell you that I won’t disappear. I still have many activities and I still am loved and appreciated … isn’t it amazing???? Thanks so much my friends for thinking about me for this article; I am proud and honoured! Mimmi Boa / Isabella

An Interview with Fashion- & Pose-Designer

Cynthia Ultsch The Hottest Sin in Second Life Fashion Written by Florentine Rau-Offcoure Pictures by Kynne Llewellyn

35

Florentine Rau

Cynthia Ultsch, the founder & designer of [Cynful] Clothing & CnS e-motion, designs are a reflection of her passion for fashion which she combines with minimalism, precise interesting tailoring and impeccable finishing to clothing. In addition, her designs are freshly charming with simple silhouettes that slip on your body with elegance. Affordable, vibrant color and attention to detail make this line a must have in any closet. She simply followed her passion for SL clothes which guided her to her destiny of her own couture line: a ready-to-wear collection that launched with her first top in 2008. After just a couple of years her line grows more and

more each season and she along with it — because it is meant to be. Women want her clothes for their edgy, sexy and modern styles that adorn a woman’s body so well. Dressed in a [Cynful] line makes you feel strong, unique and desirable. So enjoy this exclusive interview with the woman behind the scenes.

Pose: CnS e-motion „Fantastic4“. Mozart Loordes wears [Cynful] Eve Britches in Black.

Tell me a little about yourself. What’s your background? What are your general professional and non-professional interests?

outfits, and overall just having a good time. It’s about personal expression NOT what others say you should wear - in both in RL or even in SL! :D

Arialee Miles wears [Cynful] T-Dress in Coral Lace.

Cynthia Ultsch: I was a Human Resources Manager for a telecommunications company until 2008. I was responsible for hiring and sadly firing people ;/ organizing all the employee Stuff for 300 Workers.

When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?

Hikaru Enimo wears [Cynful] Eve Britches in White. Wicca Merlin wears [Cynful] Baubie Hugger & [Cynful] Eve Skirt (I <3 SL Fashion Special). Eve Skirt - I <3 SL Fashion Special.

Cynthia Ultsch: I was always interested in SL fashion while shopping for new clothing, skin and hair! After opening my pose and What does fashion mean to you? animation business in SL which grew out of my photography studio it Cynthia Ultsch: I see fashion as seemed like a natural progression. something to be enjoyed. It is a kind of art form. If its not fun or if I always liked to dress up my Avi you do not enjoy it - it’s not worth trying to look different and unique. it. Fashion is about happiness and One day, I basically had an Idea for experimentation - some like it, some a simple top that I could not find in don’t! lol It’s feeling good about Second Life. I sat like 3-4 days after how you look, putting together new RL work in Ps and tried the best i

37

Florentine Rau could. When I uploaded the texture into Second Life and created the jacket layer; once I dressed my avi with it I liked it! I received a few IM’s from other fashionitas asking me where they could get this top. I decided after a couple of days to sell it in a different color choice in a friends store and that’s basically how everything started... What was the first piece of clothing you ever designed? Cynthia Ultsch: It was the Neckholder Top i was talking about in Question 3 :) Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing or pose. Cynthia Ultsch: Mostly, I am inspired by a piece of real life clothing something I have or like. I will search around the internet for that style or piece. I think work on creating the texture and the shape of the piece in photoshop and apply the texture to it along with wrinkles, shading and other tricks to make it look detailed and well made. After the basic clothing piece is made I create prims for it, as an example the new Vale’s Sweatshirt dress, I had to make the prim skirt, the mesh skirt and collars which also need their own textures, shading, etc. To get the basics done for this particular dress it took me about 3-4 days of work in photoshop or perhaps a little more. Then I have to recreate it in all of the colors which takes another day or two depending on how many colors you want to offer. I will also make a dress available in different textures and when I do that it doubles the work which means I will have one color color set, lace, sheer, etc. Once the item is complete there is the vendor work - deciding how to present the clothing, take a photo of every color/ texture option, work up a vendor ad style again in photoshop.

39

Florentine Rau The logos are added and then I can begin the marketing of the new release. What advice do you have for aspiring SL fashion designers? Cynthia Ultsch: Lol. If you really want to create something in SL with success and fun you NEED to have patience. The saying “Rome wasnt build in a day” it is the same for clothing or even poses. It is a learning process of the various software programs such as Poser, Photoshop, Blender etc. How would you define your personal style? Cynthia Ultsch: Uraban-Classic-Sexy - All in all mixed together can come out very decent :P What is your favorite article of clothing? Cynthia Ultsch: Oh, thats a mean question... Honestly, i like a lot what i create. Its simple, if i dont like/wear it, i dont create it. Out of our most recent releases my favorite clothing items are the new Zia Mesh Jeans and the Vale´s Sweatshirt Dress and for poses the “Cyn City” themed Poses are my favs by far. What items, besides a jeans, should every woman have in her closet / inventory? Cynthia Ultsch: A comfy yet sexy dress! :P Which accessory should every woman aspire to own? Cynthia Ultsch: Well lol... necklaces, earrings, rings and stuff like this. It depends on everyones taste tho. :) I love ALL of them. What are your tips for mixing classic style with street style? Cynthia Ultsch: There are not tips really. Its up to everyones own taste - especially in SL :D

Absinthe Dressed for only 1000 Lindens... by Absinthe More and more women and men need help finding clothes and putting looks together. Looking good has become more challenging nowadays. The components of style aren’t easy to find. In today’s Second Life, stylists and fashion bloggers have become almost important as the SL designers. Fashion bloggers are privy to fashion news and trends weeks before the rest of SL residents. They give us an idea how to style and they can be our inspiration. There are many fashion blogs in Second Life. Some are simply outstanding and worthy to be introduced. So our idea was to invite the best Second Life bloggers and asked them to put an outfit for only 1000 Linden Dollars together. In this issue we would like to introduce one of the best SL Fashion Bloggers: Absinthe (Sinontherocks). You can read her blog here: http://absinthemontenegro. wordpress.com/. She will show us now how to dress to the nines with little money. She will teach us that style doesn’t have a price tag. The key is learning how to work what you have – how to put it all together – and not to be afraid to stand out as an individual. We gave Absinthe a little challenge with putting an outfit together for only 1000 Linden Dollars. See the awesome result... Pictures by Nala Kurka Text by Florentine Rau-Offcourse

ONE PIECE IN FOUR DIFFERENT WAYS What happens when four Second LifeŠ top models get the same outfit to style?

Florentine Rau

One of the most important things in learning to “work our closet” has been to learn how to wear the pieces in our closet in many different ways. Figuring out how to do that helps us get more use out of our closet without having to buy more clothes. Before style blogging, we tended to wear an item of clothing only one or two ways, so being able to imagine a piece being worn four, five, or even ten different ways was mindblowing - and fun! In hopes to help you find more versatility in your closets, we started these series „

One Piece in Four Different Ways“ that feature one item styled and worn multiple ways by four SL top models. Good luck discovering the hidden treasures in your own closet! We thank Applonia Criss from „Chantkare“ for sponsoring these great dresses and we thank our top models Anna Sapphire, Mavi Beck, Annough Lykin and Seashell Dench for doing this styling fun with us. “trenDymen” BY ZACHARY ZUFREUR My excitement level escalates with the arrival of fall every year, probably way more then any normal individual who groans and whines as they dig out their stash of winter apparels

The first sign of yellowing and falling leaves may exude a melancholic and mild romantic vibe to most people, and even though I try to fake that pensive, “the world is going to end” look, I’m actually ecstatic on the inside.

Zachary Zufreur

As SL is gradually drawing parallels with RL fashion, some of the most important things that I look out for when putting together looks are that of textures and cut. The cut of a coat defines the look and vibe the person is trying to portray. A coat that is more formfitting , framing the body, makes a man look sharp and neat, it also gives off the vibe that is professional. A coat whose cut is less fitted, and does not frame the body gives off a more casual, relaxed vibe, Being a rebel at times, such coats represent resistance towards Just last week, my SL sister and I were chatting conformity and rules. about how this fall/winter season seems to contain more everyday wear designs as opposed to an The four looks i put together are mainly entire slew of avant-garde and goth items like last comfortable casual looks with a mix of brownish fall/winter. What was also interesting was that hues, darker tones as well as bright colors. while mesh may limit the creativity of designs, it definitely led to a an increase in number of coats for men, and several brands known best for female clothing are now venturing into the male market. Being a fashion-addict, fall and winter seasons brings about many possibilities in dressing, be it mix-and-matching by colors, textures, and occasion. Fall, winter looks are also fun in their own element, with many layers to play with. With the introduction of mesh in Second Life, a brand new era was born, both in the way designers design and the way people style and dress themselves. Mesh has also led to an increase in the realism of clothing in Second Life.

CArol’s style Carolina always creates sensous, stylish, sexy and alluring looks. Look carefully at her photographs. Imagine you would take the clothes of her outfits piece by piece and put them back. See how important each piece is in her outfits and how together they deliver an authentic message of style. Learning to create looks is difficult. Part of it is instinct. But quite a bit is learned. That’s the beauty of this columne. With this, Carolina takes the place of a styling teacher. Fashion is in Carolina Sautereau’s

blood. She started to play Second Life in 2007 and always enjoyed putting clothes together. In 2009 she was invited to work with the „SL-a-porter“ team and discovered her passion for the virtual fashion world. In january 2010 she decided to create her own blog called „Carol’s Style“ (http://carolstyle. wordpress.com). A Few Thoughts... about Style!

Florentine Rau-Offcourse “Fashion Fades, Style is eternal.“ Coco Chanel I have spent a good many seasons watching fashion trends come and go, style myths created and dismantled, hemlines rise and fall. The one solid piece of advice I have to offer is: don’t take all too seriously. I have found (through careful and bemused observance) that the women who take fashion and style too seriously start to go a bit crazy, and crazy looks good on a very, very select few... Cool, calm, and confident, however, looks good on pretty much anyone. You’ll start to notice that the palpable air of cool confidence always comes from the corner of the room where the stylish women have gathered. They are not always the prettiest guests at the party. But they are often the savviest, because they know that these trifles (beauty, body, billfold) really matter. What does matter is that they are comfortable in their own skin. Watch these women, learn from these women, love yourself as these women love themselves, and you will find that style comes from adoring yourself enough to dress up for you and you alone. Because, in the end you are the only judge that really matters. Let me be honest... When a beautiful woman walks into a room, I may glance up for a moment, but I soon return to my entree or my conversation or the dessert menu. Let us be honest: beauty is not all that interseting – and certainly not more interesting than the dessert menu. But when a confident woman walks into a room, it is entrancing. I’ll watch as she moves with poise and selfpossession. She is not usually the one in the plain black dress. She is the one in the interesting shirt and the vintage skirt, and I

immediately want to know where she got them. And she may not bet he most stunningly gorgeous woman I have ever seen, but she has a way about her that can make her one of the most intriguing. Confidence is captivating, it is powerful, and does not fade – and that is endlessly more interesting than beauty. The first and most important step to developing style is to project this kind of confidence. The kind of confidence that tells the others that you respect yourself, love yourself, and dress up for yourself and nobody else. You are your own muse. Style is a matter of finding out who you are and who you want to be in the world. Many of the most stylish women on the grid have not been great, ideal beauties, but they have all drawn from an enormous amount of self-confidence. They did not let anyone else define them: they defined themselves. I truly admire women who love themselves, even if they are not the standard beauty norm. I am fascinated by the imperfect icons. Confidence has nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with attitude. Nothing suits a woman better than this air of self-assurance, and when she truly owns that, she is unyielding and stunning. Confidence is the one thing that can instantly turn the volume up on a woman’s beauty. When it comes to style and confidence, you have to learn to move with it, which can be daunting. I hope, you choose to be fabulous, daring, fun, inspired, and yourself! Trends come and go, but real style is timeless! And real style doesn’t have to cost money. We all have that friend who wears outfits that you would never dreamed putting together. She finds ways to combine the oddest colors with flair, to mix genres, and to effortlessly blend different prints.

And she always looks great. She receives so many compliments, each quite often followed with, “You’re so lucky - I wish I could get away with that!” Well..., you can! You don’t need to be eccentric and you don’t need to be a SL supermodel to be “that friend”. You only need to know how to make the most of what you have, to be creative and truly innovative, and of course, to be confident. And last but definitely not least, you have to know how to shop. Like a pro. I have always loved fashion and clothes. It is part of who I am, like the colors of my eyes or the tone of my voice. I was lucky enough to grow up with two excellent examples of effortless chic - my parents. But I also had to grow into my own personal style. Life is a style evolution. And I am still evolving... hopefully. I will never stop. Every day, designers, friends, other SL models, stylists, books, films, even people on the streets teach me something new. I utilize my appreciation of the style gurus all around us, taking cues from how they wear their clothes and adapting what is truly original into a strategy for the way we shop. I don’t believe in dictating what we should buy. Figure out what you want to project to the world and how to own this look. Once you are able to identify what you love on others, use the expertise that is hidden within us all to reinvent that style into an affordable version that looks great on you. You don’t have to spend a fortune to look fabulous, or sacrifice style when you are on a budget. Less is really more. Take stock. Know thyself. Style comes from within. Style is having the confidence to play with fashion, to be creative, to innovate. Love & kisses, Florentine “Style is a simple way of saying complicated things”. Jean Cocteau

There is a different kind of mesh avatar that is all the rage among fantasy fashionistas: Petites. For a while now we have been intrigued and tempted by the gorgeous petite mesh avatars taking the grid by storm. Lately in Second Life we have been loving the Petite Avatars from Yabusaka Loon. The cuteness... it burns. These diminutive elves and fairies were originally released at Yabusaka, but the creator quite wisely offered creator packs as well so that other designers could not only design clothing for them, but also release their own versions of the avatars themselves. This has led to an explosion of itty bitty outfits, accessories, and even home and garden decor to target the rapidly growing community. There are a growing number of small mesh avatars available on the market using any number of keywords like Mini, Micro, etc, but right now our preference leans toward the Petites from Yabusaka because there is an active community surrounding them and an ever-increasing range of products for them. Yabusaka’s are a little pricy, but there is no question of the quality of the product. It is also modifyable and created to accept the same template all Second Life skins use. So if you are handy in PS/GIMP and have access to skin files, you can customize your avatar. The promotional materials say that the avatar is 1/3 the size of an average avatar, but given that everyone in Second Life walks around pretending they are 8′ tall, the Petites really come off as smaller. Petites are not Second Life’s first miniature avatars. The Tiny avatar community has been going strong now for a long time. What makes Petites different is that they have the same basic proportions as a full sized human avatar, scaleddown to the size of a doll. So how should you get started assembling your own petite self? First thing’s first, you have to pick out the Petite you like best.

Kynne Llewellyn & Florentine Rau There are plenty to choose from, but our current favourite is the Royale Petite by Alia Baroque of Fallen Gods, one of the most popular fantasy skin and avatar stores. Royale is a good starting set because it comes with a few different skin tones, makeups, options like freckles, and several dresses, all while keeping around the same price point as other Petites. They even offer male Petites, which few other shops do. Some of your normal hair styles may be able to be scaled down small enough to fit your Petite’s head, but not all of them. Thankfully one of our favourite mesh hair shops, Wasabi Pills, has released Petite versions of some of their styles. Wasabi Pills has Petite-sized mesh hair and there are accessories like eyes, wings, and even armor. Tameless has adapted some of their fabulous hairs for petite avatars, too. It is important to remember that because Petites have mesh bodies, your normal clothing probably won’t fit them. Plenty of designers are hopping on the Petite bandwagon and scaling down many of their most popular creations or designing new fairy outfits altogether. Our favourite find so far are these scaled down versions of one of our favourite fantasy gowns from Fellini Couture. These are just our recommendations, but there’s plenty more out there! Peruse the marketplace with search terms like “Petite Fairy”, or browse the selection at Yabusaka’s Petite mall area in-world for loads more! Yabusaka also makes mesh clothing templates available for free so that clothing designers can use the same textures they’ve uploaded for full-size clothing to offer as petite clothing. In addition to the Petalwing lingerie from Solange, there are designers like *G Field*, RFYRE, and Evie’s Closet making goth, fantasy and casual wear.

Poulet Koenkamp PurpleMoon Creation Model - Caoimhe Lionheart I don’t really have a favourite creation but I do have a few with some special meaning for me. This time, I choose “Serafina”. She is almost two years old and it was the first sculpted gown I ever made. On those days, PurpleMoon was a small shop that not many people knew it exist. I believe part of the success came thanks to this dress. After a couple of days of being offered on the Marketplace, it was amazing to see in almost every single club we visit somebody wearing it. “Serafina” made me realise PurpleMoon had something really good to offer and my job was being appreciated and recognized. I owe her. She showed me the path I was going to take.

The Fifty Shades of Grey Mania ... making the forbidden suddenly fashionable Article by Florentine Rau-Offcourse Pictures by Falbala Fairey

Florentine Rau Leather, ropes and cuffs, oh my! Best-selling novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” by author E.L. James is bringing BDSM to the mainstream. Curious?

The first 100 of the 479 pages are pure foreplay and then bam — all the eroticism, naughtiness and straight up blush-worthy moments come rushing at you all at once.

One recent rainy Sunday, I spent twelve hours in bed, cuddled up with my iPad, reading about a 21-year-old virgin entering a world of bondage and submission, complete with spanking, nipple clamps, and a “red room of pain.” Please don’t judge me: I was reading the literary phenomenon „Fifty Shades of Grey“, the tale of a college student who signs a contract to be the submissive plaything of a handsome young billionaire. Sometimes we need a great escape, and what better way to lose an afternoon than with some guilt-free, kinky sex?

There’s something about the pace of the story that hooks you in. The other night I blew through 100 pages without realizing it. But there is also something about this book that makes you feel like you’ve done something …uhm... wrong. I actually felt the need to “confess” to my husband some of the really naughty plot details after I read one particularly graphic passage. On the subway today, I was so grateful I was reading on my iPad because I didn’t want anyone to know what was making me turn crimson!

So, uuh, I was reading „Fifty Shades of Grey“ (...and turning hundred shades of red on each page). So if you haven’t read the trilogy... Where the hell have you been? E. L. James’s mainstream erotica skyrocketed from Twilight-inspired fan fiction to self-published e-book to New York Times best-sellers-list trilogy, blazing a hotsex trail for millions of women, including some of my closest friends. In fact, it was in summer when my friend casually mentioned that she was reading “Fifty Shades of Grey”. “You know, the sex book that is all the rage in the suburbs. Get Involved.” she whispered. “Everyone and their mother are reading these books,” my friend informed me in hushed tones. I hadn’t heard of it and couldn’t for the life of me understand why she was whispering about this in her own apartment! I went about my business and then it was like a dam burst open. I couldn’t stop hearing about this book from a segment on news and talk shows to posts on Facebook. I was curious even though I knew nothing about it other than it was erotic and of the xxx variety. Not my normal, mainstream reading material... Curiosity got the best of me, and that afternoon I purchased an e-book copy. Make no mistake, Fifty Shades would never be considered well-turned prose (the author herself admits to her literary failings), but it is the ultimate guilty pleasure, especially now that you can download these pulp sex fantasies behind closed doors, sparing yourself the shame of an overthe-counter bookstore experience.

I really don’t want to give too much away if you have plans to read it. But I feel the need to give you a little heads up so you know what you’re getting into. There’s a reason the Grey series is being dubbed “mommy porn,” and it’s not just because of the rough sex and BDSM relationship that has its innocent, college student protagonist Anastasia Steele bending over backward (and forward and sideways) for the older, dashing Christian Grey. It’s about a young and inexperienced college student that meets an intriguing billionaire and they enter into a very sexy and even disturbing relationship. Originally conceived as Twilight fan fiction, James’s 50 Shades of Grey “reimagined the Bella and Edward love affair set in contemporary Seattle, Washington with Bella as the young college graduate virgin and Edward as the masterful billionaire with secret sexual predilections.” So while the steamy scenes have no doubt sent many hands wandering beneath the sheets during bedtime reading, much of Grey ’s appeal is its Cinderella story - the rich-man-sweeps-innocent-beauty-off-her-feet female fantasy. And as in so many romance novels, beneath the hero’s domineering veneer there’s a vulnerability that only the heroine can penetrate, though not without some emotional maneuvering. Jane Eyre has to confront the madwoman in Mr. Rochester’s attic; Bella has to come to terms with Edward’s immortality and bloodlust; Anastasia has to endure Christian Grey’s “Red Room of Pain.”

Falbala Fairey But some ladies may think the romance in „Fifty Shades of Grey“ detracts from the sexual fantasy. While some parts are reminiscent of „9½ weeks“ and „Last Tango in Paris“, others are straight out of „Pretty Woman“, and the image of Mickey Rourke blindfolding Kim Basinger just doesn’t evoke the same mood as Richard Gere seducing Julia Roberts at a piano. EL James knows her S&M so well that Grey could read like a less sinister„ Story of O“, if it weren’t punctuated by the narrator’s dithering inner monologue (every time Anastasia gets aroused, it seems, she announces it with a “Holy Crap! ” or “Holy Shit!” or “Holy Moses!” ) I would love to know where author EL James (a 40-something British TV executive, wife and mother of two) came up with this. I mean, I was always taught to write what you know. „Fifty Shades of Grey“ is actually the first book in a trilogy so I have to assume that EL, er, knows a lot...? Despite being a latecomer to the porn party, I can attest to the series’ changing the conversation. Before I read „Fifty Shades“, I never would have dreamed of openly discussing chains, whips, and Ben Wa balls at a party. But several weeks ago I found myself doing just that, alongside excited table companions, all of them „Fifty Shades“ enthusiasts. I’ve even discussed BDSM over tuna carpaccio at a dinner party. Years ago, an older Brazilian friend casually suggested that I take up reading erotic fiction. “Forget porn,” she said. “Women need a story line—there has to be romance, there has to be fantasy.” In 1970s Brazil, Penthouse and Playboy were the magazines of choice, and it was completely normal for young women to read erotica. But until now, there hasn’t been an American pop-culture blockbuster in this previously under-the-covers genre. So how could a poorly written erotic trilogy sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. in just six weeks? And why now? Lust, desire, and availability are the basic ingredients for porn consumption, so we are at the perfect junction for such a phenomenon. Thanks to Web technology, books sell faster, trends germinate quickly, and word of mouth spreads like wildfire. And not to be overlooked, E. L. James had a great head start by piggybacking on the success of the Twilight series and its online fan base.

After all that restraint and heavy petting, this escapist audience was poised to be led down the path to some real-deal raunch. We all know that the practice of power and submission is not a new one, and „Fifty Shades“ reminded me of a ritual that writer Zora Neale Hurston dug up while doing anthropological research in 1930s Jamaica. She observed female practitioners who prepared virgin brides for marriage. Each of these young women was trained to pose on the floor, “with only her shoulders and the soles of her feet touching the floor,” for when her “lord and master” entered the bedchamber. This sounds like something the dominant Christian Grey would command of his submissive Anastasia. Did these matriarchal Jamaican women know something that modern „Fifty Shades“ readers are secretly searching for? Is there power to be gained from pleasing? It appears so. Many women claim that the books have rejuvenated their sex lives, and even men have broadcast their praise, remarking on their wives’ reignited interest after they read the series. All I know is that when the story does make it to the big screen, I can’t wait to see the handsome Mr. Grey shopping at Kiki de Montparnasse. Love & kisses, Florentine Rau

“The candle flame is too hot. It flickers and dances in the over-warm breeze, a breeze that brings no respite from the heat. Soft gossamer wings flutter to and fro in the dark, sprinkling dusty scaled in the circle of light. I’m struggling to resist, but I’m drawn. And then it’s to bright, and I am flying too close to the sun, dazzled by the light, fried and melting from the heat, weary in my endeavers to stay airborn. I am so warm. The heat... It’s stiffling, overpowering. It wakes me.” Mrs. Robinson (Model: Rhonda Pennell) wears [LeeZu!] BDSM Moulant in black. Pose: ::Nihil:: Lockable O-Cage, red (copy&mod) - Box

“You’re a sadist?” “I’m a Dominant.” His eyes are a scorching gray, intense. “What does that mean?” I whisper. “It means I want you to willingly surrender yourself to me, in all things.” I frown at him as I try to assimilate this idea. “Why would I do that?” “To please me,” he whispers as he cocks his head to one side, and I see a ghost of a smile. Please him! He wants me to please him! I think my mouth drops open. Please Christian Grey. And I realize, in that moment, that yes, that’s exactly what I want to do.
