Purchased in 2012 by Derby Hotels Collection, this renovated former eighteenth-century palace ultimately preserves the character and beauty of its original architecture. The result is a luxurious hotel that showcases works of art from the private Clos Foundation collection as well as a seemingly endless range of objects and photographs uncovered during the building’s renovation. THE BRANDO, ECO LUXURY RESORT IN FRENCH POLYNESIA

The Brando is a paradise, or maybe the Paradise The location is perfect: the Polynesian atoll of Teatiaroa: twelve small islands located to north east of Tahiti and famous for being purchased by Marlon Brando in 1967. Recently awarded “Best Overseas Resort” and “Best Eco Tourism Property” by Luxury Travel Magazine, The Brando is an eco resort that protects tropical fauna. The mission of the resort is in fact to preserve the uncontaminated nature of the atoll. There is an eco-station for scientific research for the protection of the island and the marine habitat; the guests can observe turtles, rays and exotic birds while relaxing on the white beach. There is also a beautiful organic garden where fruit and vegetable plants are grown that will be served directly in the resort’s restaurants. The Brando Resort has 35 villas on the private white sand beaches built in the Polynesian tradition, and it is the first resort that uses particular eco-friendly technology: conditioned air is produced from sea water and energy is exclusively solar. There are two restaurants, the Beachcomber Café and Les Mutinés headed by celebrity chef Guy Martin. Currently, a new restaurant is under construction to offer even more luxurious service. To relax after a bath at sea: The Menu Bar with spectacular views over the lagoon and the informal Bob’s Bar on the beach (dedicated to Bob, Marlon Brando’s factotum on the set of his films). There are many activities including the Cultural Lounge where guests can discover the Polynesian traditional culture and through readings, demonstrations and lectures by scientists telling their research on flora and fauna. Snorkeling gives unique experiences and emotions among coral gardens, colorful tropical fish, and sharks. You can visit all the private islands that surround the lagoon; the infinity pool and the beach are perfect for relaxation, and the luxurious Varua Polynesian Spa offers beauty treatments inspired by ancient Polynesian traditions. Heaven then really does exist. www.thebrando.com Teti’aroa Private Island, Arue Tahiti Cousine Island Image by PIERRE BASSANI All Images: Courtesy of the respected hotels Trend Privé Magazine

The

The May Fair Hotel by Anna Shearer

Do you know what? “After four years of nurturing and growing my blog, I am so proud of myself that I am now able to travel with it. The blogging world is a beautiful place, and I’ve met so many amazing people and seen some amazing places along the way that I am forever grateful for this blog and all it has been able to do for me. With that being said, I was thrilled to be invited to none other than The May Fair Hotel, the official sponsor of London Fashion Week, now for a Fashion Blogger the words ‘London Fashion Week’ make my spine tingle with excitement. The hotel opened in 1927, that’s over 90 years ago! But, incredibly, it’s not one of those fine hotels you see everywhere in London, it has a twist. I had seen The May Fair Hotel on Lydia Millen’s blog, and other similar bloggers- it was always a hotel I’ve wanted to visit in London. Did you know that The May Fair Hotel is also part of the Positive Luxury group? Positive Luxury is a company who award the ‘butterfly mark’ to brands which pass an extensive annual assessment which proves your brand is sustainable, helping us save our planet step by step and educating our customers to shop more ethically.

THE RESTAURANT We We had breakfast in The May Fair bar next to the concierge area, and this was very light and pleasant. We ordered french bread to finish off a perfect

‘LETS BREAK IT DOWN’ THE HOTEL Instantly when our Uber pulled up, about five doormen rushed over to help with our suitcases and bags as well as open our taxi door, we didn’t have to lift a finger, tick. The concierge area was lovely and welcoming. We even saw a famous footballer player on our way inside the hotel. The front desk was very friendly and informed us that we had been upgraded to a suite. THE ROOM We were upgraded to a junior suite which meant that we had a bigger restroom (with a bath and shower) and a larger room with a sofa and lounge space, so it was perfect. The bathroom and the whole room, in fact, were made of white marble, which is bloggers` paradise, so it was stunning. The shower had a strong running shower head, which made it impossible for me to get out of it because it was so nice. The shower even had a chair in it, in case you needed a rest mid-shower.

breakfast, and off we went to enjoy our day. THE MAY FAIR SPA I heard down the grape vine that The May Fair Spa was a hidden gem. The spa was hidden in the bottom floor tucked away, quietly. It was a small but cozy haven for hotel guests to relax. The spa (although had no pool) consisted of a large shower, sauna, steam room, crushed ice (to cool off after your sauna) and a relaxation room with gorgeous heated beds, where you could sit and read a book and drink herbal tea. The spa was complemented with soft relaxing music and statues of Buddha everywhere. It was like we’d found a secret den away from the busy streets of London, but in the heart of the London, in the borough of Mayfair. BUT WHAT DID I REALLY THINK? I would 100% go back again! The location was FAB. The staff was accommodating and friendly. I felt right at home, in fact, we didn’t want to leave come Monday! The hotel itself is stunning, and there are pieces of artwork dotted around the hotel and quirky statues everywhere, putting it aside from the typical ornate hotels in London. It’s a modernised, historic hotel which really adds a bit of ‘flavour’ to the borough of Mayfair and is definitely somewhere you want to check out while you are in town.

For more information on the ride or how to register in your city, visit www.gentlemansride.com or check out their Facebook page. Even if you don’t ride, take the opportunity to gussy yourself up and peruse from the sidelines, or donate what you can to an extremely worthy cause.

Dapper motorcyclists around the globe are gearing up for the 2016 Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, an international charity event for custom, classic and vintage motorcycles (and their gentlefolk) that raises awareness and funds for the Movember Foundation’s men’s health programs and provides niche enthusiasts an opportunity to immerse themselves in all the buffed and polished steel eye candy they can manage. On Sunday September 25th, 2016 more than 50,000 snazzy riders in over 500 cities across 90 countries will unite for the world’s largest motorcycling charity event, upon their classic & vintage styled wheels. Cafe Racers, vintage choppers, custom brilliance... if it’s fancy and / or it’s retro it’s in there. It is the fashionable and elite feel of these bikes that make the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride the unique event that it is. While encouraged to take part in cheering on the retinue, basic bikes do not join in the actual ride itself and drivers show up in their fanciest duds, right down to their fabulously coiffed moustaches to show off their prized motos. Sponsored by Triumph, the ride involves countries across the continents from Andorra to Wales and everything in between. Now in its fifth year, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of prime time’s Don Draper of Mad Men astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together. That first ride in 2012 was so successful it encouraged him to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. Riders raise funds through their own internet pledge pages. The top generator of funds this year is currently a rider from London, David Blundell contributing over $18K of support. The popular event also draws the attention of various brands and is sponsored in part by such prestige accessories companies as Zenith Watches, Hedon Helmets and Undandy Footwear. Zenith also puts forth a team fundraising effort to encourage other brands to team up and take part. A running tally on the Ride’s main website creates friendly competition for prizes and top billing as contributors. While most of the attention tends to go to those who raise the

Trend Privé Magazine 10

most or who have access to certain channels however, there is a massive effort put forth on the part of less wealthy countries such as Thailand and India as well. These are causes that are important worldwide and need as much backing as possible. There is a community of support within each city that brings riders together and the premise gives a prime accessible opportunity for awareness of men’s health issues that are notoriously absent from conversation but vitally important to draw attention to and create dialogue around. Prostate cancer is a focus through the recently aligned Movember Foundation, although the ride raised millions in funds independently for the first years with sincere dedication and commitment. The loss of an esteemed member this past year has now also prompted the addition of suicide prevention and mental health to their cause. The Gentleman’s Ride is also a platform for riders to network and create community around a shared passion. Cameron Bell who started the Victoria, Canada ride four years ago, has partnered with many of his friends in his town to network around the event and use it for PR. At Victory Barbers, where the clientele enjoy the epitome of a good-old-fashioned cut and shave, the barbers themselves are submersed in everything that makes the gentlemanly side to the ride so appealing aesthetically. Duncan, one of the barbers, takes part in the ride itself and the match of genre helps spread the word to like-minded individuals. Similarly he has connected with the artisanal food truck Kraken and the purveyors of fine men’s accessories, The Copper Hat to bring an authentically crafted feel to Victoria’s event and the riding community. More than just a typical bandwagon for promotion, the exclusivity in the most positive sense of the niche allows enthusiasts to find a common bond that ensures a continued success of the event as well as a stronger community year round and to use the aesthetic to create such a popular spectacle. It is a shining example of what can be attained when the effort put into a passion joins forces with doing something powerful to benefit others. Henceforth it shall be understood that bike connoisseurs are dignitaries of the greater good.

Bardessono Hotel Eco-Chic:Bardessono Hotel & Spa brings sustainable luxury to Napa

By Justin M Duren

Napa Valley, an idyllic swath of undulating hills and verdant fields in Northern California, has attracted global travelers for decades. First, as a renowned capital for wine lovers. Then rapidly over the last twenty years, given the rise of Silicon Valley and resulting deluge of disposable income, Napa quickly evolved into a culinary and luxury tourism hotspot. Now in the 21st century, with the thankful increase in environmental advocacy, broadened implementation of many sustainable and eco-friendly practices has occurred throughout the region. It is from these fertile roots and shifting economic and ecological trends that the incomparable Bardessono Hotel & Spa was founded. Having opened in 2009, Bardessono Hotel & Spa burst onto the Napa scene with well-deserved fanfare from both encouraged environmentalists and savvy world travelers. Being designed from the ground-up as a luxury hotel, the eco-friendly hotel had its advantages, and the attention to detail can be seen immediately upon entering the grounds. The resort is a masterpiece of salvaged wood, local Tufa stone, rustic reclaimed metalwork, and stunning landscaping. Each building on the property is designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, and thoughtfully placed fountains and gardens throughout the resort create a serene tranquility in every courtyard and gathering space. Inside each suite (Bardessono is a suite-only hotel), no expense was spared, no guest need was overlooked. Organic linens and fabrics are used throughout. Every room has a dedicated outdoor space, fireplace, in-room massage table, and whirlpool jacuzzi. Craft sodas and artisan snacks are included too. And the beds must be made of clouds; they are so comfortable and sumptuous. (Ok, we know, they aren’t made of clouds. Must be magic dust then). Take a leisurely stroll through the grounds at night, after another perfect day touring the surrounding Napa countryside, and you will be hard-pressed to think of a more romantic setting, what with the glowing tea-lights, comfy lounge chairs, and sparkling reflection pools. And when you wake up the next morning and step out onto your private patio to stretch your legs, you are treated to fog-filled hillside vistas and the sounds of hot-air balloons rising directly overhead. Bardessono seems to get everything else right, too. Every arriving guest is given a complimentary glass of wine before being escorted personally to their suite by a resort concierge. All guests receive free access to bicycles, a fantastic way to tour the Napa countryside. Bardessono also has a unique partnership with Lexus and maintains a fleet of vehicles for guest usage. The onsite spa is an award-winning oasis of zen, offering bespoke service and personalized care using ultra-luxurious products. Or better yet, take advantage of the in-suite massage facilities, and relax your cares away in the comfort of your room. And no stay at Bardessono is complete without dining at their world-class farm-to-table restaurant “Lucy,” named after the matriarch of the founding Bardessono family. Divine dishes and to-die-for desserts are prepared fresh daily by Executive Chef Nate Lindsay and his polished kitchen team, using locally sourced ingredients and anything that is in season from Lucy’s onsite organic garden. (Tip: try the fried lentils, they are just divine). Guests who are lucky enough to secure dinner at the chef’s table are in for a real treat - private outdoor seating right in the middle of the garden, with personal attention throughout the meal by Chef Lindsay himself. Lucy Restaurant also serves fantastic breakfast, though it’s hard to overlook the complimentary pastries from Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery made available to each guest every morning. Bardessono stands among the most elite Napa resorts based on style, sophistication, and quality alone. But it is the dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship that truly sets it apart. One of only two LEED platinum certified hotels in the United States, the list of environmental initiatives undertaken by Bardessono is vast, including: • • • • •

Reduce & Reuse: repurposed stone, wood, fabrics, cleaning supplies are used throughout the property. Heating & Cooling: Underground geothermal is used for heating and cooling, and heat-saving materials and glass were used for building construction. Low Water Usage: Low water fixtures are installed, drought-resistant landscaping is utilized, and efficient irrigation and usage of grey water for all watering needs. Energy Conservation: roof-based solar power, motion sensors in each room to reduce energy needs. Indoor Air Quality: All glues, adhesives, finishes, paints, carpets and fabrics are environmentally friendly, and interior fabrics and carpet are green certified.

Ok, so if we are beginning to sound like we are fawning, it’s because we are. Bardessono is the blueprint for what eco-luxury can and should be. Gone are the days of having to sacrifice comfort and class for sustainability and saving the planet. No longer must high quality mean high impact to the environment. In this age of technological progress and ecological awareness, beautiful design and nature’s beauty can co-exist. It seems nowadays you can have your organic cake, and eat it too. Just make sure you leave room for those breakfast pastries. Trend Privé Magazine

Kauai A Fragile Paradise

By Justin M Duren “This island calls to people,” I was told by a local shopkeeper on my first visit to the north shore of Kauai many years ago. “It’s… It’s like a dream”, I happily remarked before departing in a rented red convertible toward another perfect beach, joyously lost in another perfect day with perfect weather on a perfect island. Now to be fair, every island in the Hawaiian Isles feels like a tropical paradise painted by Gauguin. Maui is the island of lovers and little ones. Newly married couples and families of all ages flock to the exquisite beaches, abundant activities and fantastic food to be had under the Maui sun. It is also rapidly becoming the Pacific Ocean playground of the mega-rich, with celebrities such as Owen Wilson and Oprah Winfrey owning stunning properties on the island. Other travelers prefer Oahu, an island so diverse it has something for everyone. Tourists fly in from around the world to indulge in the glitz and glamour of Waikiki Beach, while the world’s best surfers dream of visiting “The North Shore” of Oahu, possibly the most famous surfing spot on this planet. Still, other travelers want to experience the remote and undisturbed beauty of Lanai. Boasting only 30 miles of paved road and not a single traffic light on the entire island, visiting Lanai feels like entering a tropical time machine into the past. But with top notch golf. And world class resorts. Billionaire philanthropist Larry Ellison liked Lanai so much; he purchased 98% of it in 2012. However, for the almost 1.2M annual visitors that arrive by passenger plane and cruise ship, there is no greater paradise on this beautiful earth than the Garden Isle of Kauai. Endless remote beaches blanket the hotter western shore, crystal blue waters crashing against the sand while adventurous campers and delighted day-trippers navigate the rolling dunes and rocky roads. The more temperate south coast is filled with luxurious hotels nestled between fancy homes and even more lavish beaches. Plus the weather is always perfect every day. You can look it up. And the eastern shore of Kauai is an exciting and eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and outdoor activities; you can grab an early breakfast, surf some waves, kayak to a waterfall, browse a local craft store then catch a shave ice all before noon. But it is in the lush, green jungles of Kauai’s north shore (“Hawaii’s other north shore,” as it is sometimes called), that I first heard the island’s amorous call. Trend Privé Magazine

The north shore is an enchanting setting full of raging waterfalls cascading down majestic mountains, picturesque vistas of taro and trees, and a coastline of beaches and cliffs that seem too good to be true. I’d recommend you start in Kilauea, with its iconic lighthouse and excellent local shops and food stops (Julio’s Burritos is a personal favorite, tell them I sent you...and that I still dream about their to-go bowls). Then continue your ultra-scenic drive north into Princeville, an upscale community of resorts, golf courses, and stunning cliffside coastline. Enjoy sunset at the local lookout near the end of the main road, before turning around and heading further north down into quaint and quirky Hanalei. The closest thing to a town on Kauai’s north shore, Hanalei is a beautiful assortment of local craft shops, restaurants and nightlife, and some of the best people watching on the island. Finish your day here with some local grinds (Hawaiian slang for food) before retiring early as all locals do. That way you can get to sleep early and get some much-needed rest before the inevitable rooster call outside your window wakes you up at dawn. Or even earlier. See, roosters are everywhere on the island due to an unfortunate battle between a huge chicken coop and an even larger hurricane a few decades ago. The chicken coop lost, and the island has been humorously taken over by foul ever since. So expect to see many other early risers too as you return to Hanalei for a quick breakfast in the morning before continuing down the road to any number of fabulous beaches for the day. Tunnels and Ke’e are my personal favorites for both the snorkeling and the scenery. And any visit to this side of the island isn’t complete without seeing the awe inspiring Napali Coast. Whether experiencing it up close and personal while hiking the famous Kalalau trail, or taking in the view from afar on the bow of a chartered catamaran, seeing this coastline for the first time is breathtaking. Same for the second and third and fourth times, too. So it’s easy to see why Kauai and its lesser known north shore is an attractive destination. But like many island nations, Hawaii has a long and contentious history of visitors from other lands. By any measure, Hawaii today is a very peaceful, tranquil, and safe region to visit. However much violence and hardship have occurred over the centuries as ships from east and west discovered this Pacific gem. To this day, many locals on the island still campaign for indigenous rights. While it is nearly impossible to succinctly and adequately give voice to all the complexities of the current political and territorial debates in Hawaii today, one glaring challenge that becomes immediately apparent to any visitor is the growing deleterious effects of tourism and economic expansion. This impact is especially noticeable on Kauai’s north shore, as an example after example of ecological problems mount. Coral reefs once colored with every shade of the rainbow have become fields of white and brown. Beaches that were once immaculate as recently as the last decade now frequently have a litter and other signs of human neglect. Signs must now be placed in accessible locations imploring visitors to respect local animals. Less impactful agriculture techniques and a focus on local fruits and vegetables have given way to a more capitalist approach to maximizing production and chasing current produce trends. The list goes on. This is a sad cycle repeatedly seen in many popular tourist locations worldwide. A remote, pristine area becomes more and more popular. Hotels and houses and buildings and businesses sprout up. Foreign money floods in, and domestic interests and equilibriums become conflicted with the human nature to accumulate wealth and expand. Environmental and cultural impacts increase. Wash, rinse, and repeat. And there are no simple answers, especially given that the need for exploring, for travel, for experiencing new cultures and new places, is vital to the human experience. Something to be cherished and celebrated. But there are many steps each of us can take to help repair past damage and improve the chances for a better tomorrow. I’m particularly fond of the “Leave No Trace” principles: 1. Plan ahead and prepare - Do some research before you travel. Learn local customs, traditions, and challenges. Know how you can help before you even arrive. 2. Travel and camp in appropriate locations - Use existing roads and trails. Good campsites are found, not made. 3. Dispose of waste properly - There are three types of people in this world. Those who throw trash on the ground, those who walk over trash on the field...and those who pick it up. 4. Leave what you find - There is a Hawaiian legend that says bad luck comes to any travelers who take back coral or seashells from the islands. No need to test the theory. That small profit from a shell necklace, or interesting memento to place on your desk, just isn’t worth it. Ever. 5. Minimize impacts - Take an hour or a day to volunteer for a local beach clean-up effort. Donate to an environmental group. Pack a few unused goods and clothes in your luggage and drop-off at a school or shelter. No gesture is too small. 6. Respect wildlife and vegetation - Plain and simple. 7. Be considerate of other visitors - and show people how much you care. When other tourists look at you strangely for picking up trash on the sidewalk, don’t be shy to explain what you are doing and why. If you see some kids walking on a coral reef, politely explain to them the damage and impact they may cause. Sure, not everyone will heed the advice or follow your lead, but if you influence even one person in your lifetime to be a better traveler you have made a world of difference. The north shore of Kauai is a priceless gift, one that should be shared and experienced; a gift that must be taken care of, nurtured, respected and revered. Few places on this earth are as precious, as vibrant, or as ecologically diverse. And we have the power to affect positive change, to make a difference, to save this emerald jewel for generations to come. The island of Kauai calls to us asking for our protection. Please answer the call. Trend Privé Magazine

RESTIVAL FACTS AT A GLANCE /Reconnect to Life INTRODUCTION - WHAT IS RESTIVAL? Restival is the ‘lovechild’ of a retreat and a festival. It’s a desert wellness, and yoga retreat inspired by the ancient tribes of the country held deep in nature, designed to help participants to disconnect and reconnect. The idea of Restival is to be at one with off-grid nature and tradition, to move away from being governed by fast-paced, city-centric lives. We encourage guests to explore and unwind in beautifully clean, unspoiled and stimulating environments and find new perspective and energy from the ground in unusual places, whether in the heat of the Painted and Sahara Deserts or crispness of northernmost Swedish Lapland. Offering more than just an incredible travel experience, Restival is filled with specially curated workshops and fun activities. Unplug, unwind and restore your physical and mental equilibrium in a truly fantastic setting. Above all else, embrace a rare opportunity to reimagine the world from a fresh and fascinating perspective. No longer do we have to get high to get happy. Restival has provided a playground that helps you recalibrate, distress and find joy. CORE VALUES & VISION Restival is a new movement helping you to discover the value of slowness. Our manifesto is based on four pillars: 1.Nature. 2.Tribes. 3.Discover. 4.Unplug. OUR MISSION: Restival stands for reconnection – to yourself, one another and the world around you. OUR FOUNDATIONS: are based on tribal wisdom, self-discovery, and nature in a wellness environment. OUR INTENTION is to give you a break from modern living, in comfort, amongst nature. We also support and learn from indigenous tribes in remote locations, a major feature of all Restival experiences. OUR DESIRE is to take you to some of the purest places on earth and meet incredible, creative and inspiring individuals. OUR ADVENTURES: take place in remote locations such as a luxurious camp in Arizona, where we bring together storytellers, writers, artists, life coaches, astronomers, yoga practitioners, sound healers, musicians and wellness and bodywork therapists. Words cannot capture the time you’ll have at Trend Privé Magazine

Restival because it’s so special. Like happiness, calmness, good health, success, becoming part of the Restival movement is something you own and something unique. It’s a feeling, and we’d love you to feel it. HISTORY Restival began as an experiment for a solo vacationer that wasn’t centered around overStuffed travel schedule, hedonism and being part of a couple of a group. A vast growing interest in anthropological spirituality and powerful communities also influenced the development of Restival. What came to be, after months of research, site visits, meetings and preparations with people globally – large quantities of time spent with indigenous people learning from their traditions and livelihoods - is an independent, boutique retreat that is truly a one-off. We’ve curated experiences in untouched spaces, where you won’t struggle to unplug and recharge. We focus on lands with fewer footprints in the sand, where you might come away with new stories, friends and an overall restored bodily and mental energy and outlook on life, amidst the beauty of quiet but dramatic landscapes. We also place Restival alongside unusual world-famous landmarks and artwork like the Roden Crater for both a historical and contemporary richly cultural adventure. The inaugural event - Restival Sahara - took place in Morocco in November 2015. Curated workshops included creative writing, body art, yoga, meditation, life coaching, and incredible gong baths - the sound of the gong resonating across miles of the Sahara was an actual life enhancing moment for many.

Restival Arizona followed in September 2016, where an international array of individuals from all walks of life, gathered for five special days in the Painted Desert for a life-changing vitalisation of self-discovery. Guests could sweat in the sweat lodges; sing and dance at the cacao ceremonies, while the cosmos became their compass with astrology lessons from an eminent Navajo astrologer. THE LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE Restival is not a digital detox that will be undone within two days of returning home. The idea is to help people to connect with the core human capabilities that make us truly happy, successful, complex, healthy beings and discover a hidden world. The days spent on our wellness retreats are fun and relaxing. Arrive at Restival with an open mind and take in the surroundings. It’s true that you’ll make some self-discoveries, but you will also be pampered. Between delicious organic meals, spa treatments and deep sleep on cotton sheets in comfortable accommodation (think tipis and bell tents), you’ll receive one-on-one meditative guidance from practitioners who apply centuries old philosophies to help you reset and recharge. However far up or down the spiritual spectrum, you feel on arrival, the outcome is to extract what you need from the experiences. Restival is about connectedness; it doesn’t matter how old you are, your religion, what country you’re from. Divisions are lowered at Restival, and people come together like a family it’s what they called themselves at the end of the trip. People let their guard down, open up, reflect, spend time alone, spend time with others. There’s no agenda at Restival. That’s why it’s so good for the solo traveler because there’s always someone to talk to or you can be alone if you wish. The Restival experience would not be complete without the chance to unwind and reconnect with yoga, meditation, gong baths, wellness treatments, beauty therapies, writing workshops, art, unique clothing collections and pop-up shops. A typical day on camp looks like this:

The Art of Relationships with Anne Lloyd resonated with many people, all so hungry to hear about how to maintain a healthy relationship, or how to meet someone but don’t know where to go. Boris Hoppek created a piece of surreal art along the dune, made from bright blue fabric standing inside it enabled a feeling of oneness. Everyone ended Restival with a sunrise Rave on the last day with Morning Gloryville, watching the sun come up over a Camel’s head dancing to Sancho Panza – it was quite something.

7:00AM Yoga / Meditation / Gong Sound Bath. 8:30AM Breakfast. 9:30AM Workshops. 12:30PM Lunch. 2:00PM Workshops / Meditation / Wellness activities. 5:00PM Sunset Yoga/ Gong Sound Bath. 7:15PM Dinner. 8:45PM Campfire stories / Astronomy. 10:00PM Music, singing and dancing.

MEET THE FOUNDER - CAROLINE JONES Caroline Jones, Restival’s founder, has worked in events for 25 years. From the heady days of the Shepherds Bush Empire during Brit Pop to the Cinema Fumee – long before the days of the Secret Cinema, Caroline has an unstoppable creative spirit that she’s now channeling into Restival. To counter the hard work and running her agency, she learned to meditate. A few years ago, she was living in two worlds – the “looking inward” – attending retreats, and the “outward” – working at Restivals. She happened to be sitting on the London tube one day, reflecting upon her fatigue, feeling overloaded with the constant pressure to answer emails, check social media and keep ahead of the innovations. In a moment of clarity, she looked up and saw that everyone else was doing the same. No-one looked up, no-one smiled or made eye contact. It was as if she was on a tube filled with people who were asleep. She wanted to say “Wake up, you’re missing it!” It occurred to her that there wasn’t a middle ground or retreats or festivals. Somewhere off the grid, for people to go and do nothing, switch off, recalibrate, reconnect with yourself and others, to practice yoga and attend workshops and dance in the evening to the beat of the

drum and the sound of people singing around a campfire without loud, amplified music, with your shoes off, with a free spirit without hedonism. A place where you the solo traveler could comfortably meet other people from diverse cultures, far away from everything – no advertising, roads, airplane trails, no noise. Somewhere silent where couldn’t see anything for miles. The earth that hadn’t been touched by energy – an electrical cable or a road. Somewhere like the desert. And so Restival was born - the first event taking place in the Sahara, in November 2015, followed by Restival Arizona in September 2016. “Technology isn’t supposed to isolate us, it wasn’t designed to do that, but it does. It’s about being in the moment with another person. The local tribes that we meet on our travels do just that – they connect. Hey, communicate the old fashioned way, the way we humans were meant to. It means we could care for one another more, be there for them, listen and engage with each other at Restival. That’s hard to do on a text don’t you think?” Caroline Jones.

Restival supports indigenous communities through dedicated education and inclusivity, trade, and sponsorship of local schools. “It’s our primary aim that we connect with others, help marginalized cultures, learn from them and use the lessons to reflect and change your life for the better. “ The cyclical reconnection of Restival is simple, spiritual, and entirely accessible to even the most skeptical of newcomers. Restival Arizona is honored to work with the Navajo together with Kate and Mark Sorensen, founders of the STAR School (Service To All Relations). The STAR School was established to educate Navajo children and to teach Navajo traditions, cultures, technology and the arts. It is the first off-the-grid, a solar and wind-powered school in the United States. LOCATIONS & DATES RESTIVAL ARIZONA 2017 - September (dates TBC) - The camp is approximately 20 minutes outside of Flagstaff. The nearest airports are Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Las Vegas. There is a team of experts on hand to ensure that you’re held in the comfort of Restival throughout your entire trip.

ROOFTOP RESTIVALS - LAUNCHING 2017 IN USA & UK New for 2017, Restival is launching a series of six rooftop festivals in the UK and USA. They’ll take place from January through to July, in London, LA, Santa Barbara, Malibu, Venice Beach, and San Francisco. Luxury Sustainable Furniture Maker:

Van De Sant www.vandesant.com

By Andrea Bell Those who have been watching the design industries with hope for the past two decades, looking for signs of the eco niche finally hitting the mainstream, know that while fashion is finally seeing its day, it is in many ways far behind the world of industrial and home design. Long has been the debate of solar roofing being economically feasible, strawbale being a better build, and graywater systems worth installing. In design however, furnishings and finishes have been striving toward eco for some time now. With programs like LEED and FSC Certification hitting the building industry decades ago, of course the finishing touches would follow suit. What we haven’t seen a lot of however, is stunning modern furniture that can fit most decor styles in a luxury sense. Enter Van de Sant, a company founded in South America, that puts equal focus on sustainability and fabulous design. The minimalist structure and high-end feel of these indoor / outdoor pieces are set to transform the impression of eco ergonomics. While we are used to “environmental design” really encompassing wood in a Scandinavian sense, the Van De Sant lines are sleek, shiny and an altogether different level. Utilizing the practice of a circular economy, Van de Sant creates an invisible body structure that is 100% made from plastic waste out of the ocean and their pieces on the whole are about 75% post-consumer content. The materials are collected using recycling programs from the very litter that pollutes the small island nation of Curacao, where Van de Sant operates, showing that creating a solution for seemingly overwhelming world issues can start with literally looking in one’s backyard. With the current backlash regarding textiles such as recycled polyester that are actually causing more damage than good, the frames and core of the pieces are an excellent alternative for recycled plastic use and the company hopes others will follow suit. When you have a top of the line product and a great message, you are not afraid of the competition following your well pioneered tracks. Trend Privé Magazine 24

“We made a real product from plastic waste, something that we are proud of and something we believe can be done in many more industries. Our impact might be small in the furniture industry, but if we can help the industry become more innovative, we have reached our goal. A billion tons of plastic, and a billion trees have been cut -- the furniture industry can do something about that. We clean up, first, what we have all left behind, and make people realize that recycling is attractive.” -Robert Milder, Founder Van de Sant One of the things that the furniture brand has done that sets a fine example for other manufacturers is that they have opened a second outlet in Holland, negating the need for shipping overseas and the carbon footprint that would create. They are intent on collaborating both within their own industry as well as with

complementary entities in fashion and construction aiming to share research and resources to move the eco factors overall forward. Recognition for the work the company does has come in many forms. From endorsement by the US Secretary of Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment at the Our Ocean conference in Washington, D.C. to being written up for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin.com website. It is the strength of design and stylish presence however that has created such a success for them. With sleek lines, strong, clean shapes and pleasing colorways the various collections offer beautiful choices for anyone looking for stunning furniture, regardless of their interest in the ethos the company abides by. Luxury meets sustainability, reducing plastic waste and working to stop deforestation, while offering a great looking and versatile product, makes Van de Sant a stand out company.

HOLIDAYS

SPA DAY Two words: Spa Treatment! Who doesn’t love ANYthing they do to you at the spa? And you would not believe how many people DON’T treat themselves! It’s seen as a luxury so this is why it’s a perfect gift. Because it’s really the gift of relaxation and in today’s society, the true luxuries are Time and Relaxation.

2

HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE

Go crazy! Really, THIS is one of those things EVERYONE dreams of doing, but they never actually do. Cross something amazing off your bucket list, and give a day never to be forgotten and talked about forever. (Remember to bring earplugs, when you get up there. It’s incredibly peaceful... until they blow the warmer. The thing that makes the fire is LOUD!)

3

4

SCUBA DIVING

This lines up with dolphin swimming. If you`re claustrophobic, have any heart problems or simply just don’t want to get certified, snorkling can be just as fun. Of course, there is likely a vacay attached to this, but that’s part of the charm. Don’t bill it as “going on vacation” so much as visiting one of the last great wonders of the world, a reef or something else beautiful that will remind everyone why it is so important that we help save our precious planet! Trend Privé Magazine 26

GO TO THAT FANCY RESTAURANT Go to the really fancy one. No, the fancier one! Take your Love to that restaurant they thought you’d never ACTUALLY go to. Enjoy the most amazing meal and really do it up. Maybe stay in a hotel to match. Spend a night on the town at home and pretend to be a tourist. OR spend the weekend in New York, if that’s where your dream restaurant is! (Just remember to make reservations in this case!)

5

SKI HOLIDAY

Spend your holidays in a post card. You don’t REALLY even have to ski if you’d rather just wear your ski duds and spend the days sipping cuppas by the stone fireplace. Of course, we recommend getting some fresh air (and powder...and selfies.)

ITALY

Che Bella Vita! By Justin M Duren

Che Bella Vita! If it isn’t already the motto of Central Italy, it should be. The phrase roughly translates to “What a Beautiful Life”, but even that is an understatement. Now there are certain places you must visit on your first trip to Central Italy. The city of Florence is at the top of that list. Of course when you arrive, you won’t see any signs for ‘Florence’. Unless maybe your last name is Florence and you have a driver picking you up, holding one of those hand-written signs with your last name written on it in a way that always seems like it was written with eyes closed on a boat in choppy waters...but we digress. Our point is that Florence is just the English name for this city; Italians call it Firenze. You will, too, before long.

The museums (start with Uffizi) and architecture and feats of engineering alone are worth the trip. Trend Privé Magazine 32

From the Ponte Vecchio Bridge where gold jewelers have been peddling their wares for hundreds of years, to Il Duomo di Firenze, perhaps the most astounding, gothic church on Earth, to the Piazzale Michelangelo, a magnificent square with a panoramic view of old town Firenze. Or just kick up your feet and enjoy an exquisitely made Italian cocktail while watching the sun go down on the Arno river. Oh, and did we mention that a picture-perfect river lazily runs through the old town and makes for the most scenic views and walks and pictures ever?

Yeah, this city has that too. And we haven’t even mentioned the incredible food, amazing art and artists in every neighborhood and square, the high fashion and fine goods rivaling some of the best in the world…ahhh,we could go on and on. But all good things must come to an end, if only so you can see a city that is perhaps even more memorable than Firenze.

Just 70 kilometers south through splendid Tuscan hills you arrive at Siena. A long time economic and military rival to Firenze, Siena is the lesser known gem that really should be on everyone’s itinerary. If Firenze is that cool, attractive, fun person you meet in college and never forget about, Siena is that amazing, warm, funny, special someone that you marry. And really there is no better way to describe Siena. It just feels like coming home. That is, if your home is a walled hilltop city made of iconic rusty-orange bricks filled with fantastic restaurants, amazing artwork and museums, energy and life and excitement, peace and tranquility and zen. With a healthy amount of espresso and gelato and Valentino and Prosecco mixed in. Best of all, the entire city is anchored by one of the most unique town squares in all of Europe, the Piazza del Campo. This brick-lined plaza gently slopes on three sides like the shell in Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, almost like an outdoor amphitheater.

Tiny toddlers, lifetime lovers, and all ages in between gather at the square throughout the day, sitting wherever there is an empty space like sunbathers at a beach. It is a spectacular sight. Continuing your journey through the mandatory sights of Central Italy requires you to break away from the dazzling cityscapes (we know, it’s tough…), but you absolutely must take a train or car out to the Tuscan countryside. It is divine. However, we are warning you now: these small towns and rolling hills and scenic landscapes have a way of making you very, very, VERY relaxed. You lose focus.

Start forgetting about home. You don’t ever want to leave. After a few glasses of Chianti, some fruits and cheeses and fresh made pasta and pastries, a few winery visits and strolls through sun-kissed vineyards, a couple nights

at a B&B or agriturismo farmhouse...and you are liable to start researching applications for long-term residence. So just know that you will fall in love with this place. You will run out of time on your visit to the Tuscan countryside and not be able to see every village and church and restaurant and winery you had on your list. It will leave you craving more. And it will be perfect.

Once you’ve seen the cities and toured the countryside, it’s time to head west and finish your adventure with a visit to the magnificent Mediterranean coast. We’ll admit, there are hundreds of amazing coastal sights in Italy. We could publish a 10-volume series on the Italian coast and still not cover it all. But one place you must visit is Cinque Terre. Meaning “Five Lands”, this area has been designated a national park by the Italian government and is comprised of 5 coastal villages all connected by train and ferry, as well as a jaw-dropping trail system through the hills that provides

breathtaking views along this jewel of the Italian Riviera. Days are filled with hiking through the hillsides and taking in magnificent views, stretching your feet out on sandy beaches with the bluest sea beckoning you, and finishing the day with a meal so fresh you’d swear the lettuce is still growing. And each village is unique. Our personal favorite is Vernazza, a perfect combination of beach and wharf, small town square and hillside homes, incredible food and even better views, and a sense of serenity that is hard to find. But you have to visit all five and make your own choice. If you like gawking at beautiful scenery and amazing architecture, go here. If you like art, fashion, music, mystery and quaint villages with small shops and restaurants that have been owned for generations, go here. If you like eating good food and drinking good wine and having good laughs with good people, go here. If you like driving fast cars on long windy roads, or having slow lazy days relaxing on a beach, go here. If you like living the beautiful life...go here. Che Bella Vita, no?

Travel photography is one of the great ways to practice your digital photography skills. Vacations are a good time to investigate this type of photography since you’re relaxed and out to have loads of fun. “Travel photography” is actually an interesting blend of several different types of picture-taking activities, which include landscape, architectural, and street photography. Even if you’re on a whirlwind 14-city tour of Europe, you’ll find that between each of those cities are scenes created by Mother Nature that deserve your artistic attention. This article provides a broad overview of some of the things to keep in mind as you venture forth on your traveling photo expedition.

Travel like a native, not like an American In Europe, stay in the same hotels and eat in the same restaurants as the Europeans do, while my fellow Americans are often sequestered at the Hilton. Public transportation is far better than the United States, easy to understand, fast, and cheap. While Americans are eating in touristy restaurants, I am dining on much better food a couple blocks away at one quarter the price.

Avoid tours Stay away from the packaged tours; I’m visiting to take pictures, not simply to be shown the sights by bored locals. A two-week, $4,000 (per person) guided tour can cost you half or one third as much if you’re willing to spend a little time on Google discovering the major things of interest in the places you want to visit—or even to determine what those places are. I do use Orbitz to pick up non-guided packages, such as airfare/car rental (a week in Ireland for $500 was nice!) or sometimes airfare/hotel when I’m staying put and don’t want to choose my own lodging. Certainly there is a place for guided tours with one-day-per-city itineraries, especially if a trip to Europe is a once-in-a-lifetime event for you. But you can transform that single visit into three or four, for the same cost, if you choose to visit Europe like the Europeans do.

local color and life. For example, if you’re charmed by a particular square in a European town, you might grab an overall shot, at night, when there are few people around. During the day, you could grab an image of some interesting architectural details before zeroing in on some street photography close-ups that show how older cultural ways have remained even as newer trends impinge.

Shoot details The biggest mistake neophyte photographers make is not getting close enough. You’re a veteran shooter, so you’ll want to get in close and capture details that really show the differences in culture. Sometimes, the best way to picture a building or other memorable sight is to capture individual snippets of its design. Indeed, parts of some buildings or monuments may be more interesting than the structure as a whole. Doorways, entrances, roofs, and decorations all make interesting photographs. Best of all, you can often use a telephoto or normal lens to capture details.

Stop to smell the roses—and view the scenery Scenic photography is sometimes problematic in a travel environment, because there is sometimes a need to meet your schedule and get on to the next city. If traveling by car, you might pull over, gawk at an impressive lake or mountain vista, then hurry to get back into the car and move on after taking a few pictures. You certainly don’t have the time to maneuver to the perfect position, or to stick around until sunset so you can capture the waning light of day. When day wanes, you need to be checked into your hotel room! Travel with a tour group in a bus is likely to be even more hurried. So, you’ll have to make a special effort to stop and smell the roses or, at least, take their photo. You may never pass this way again, so take the time to scope out your scenic view, find the best angle, and shoot it first. That way, if you’re forced to move on you’ll at least have a good basic shot. Then, take the remaining time to look for new angles and approaches. Use a wide angle to emphasize the foreground, or a telephoto to pull in a distant scene.

Think like a movie director.

Don’t gawk

You’re telling a story with your travel photography, just as a movie director spins a yarn on the big screen. Use an overall photograph of a scene or city (an “establishing shot” in movie parlance) to establish the location and mood. Then capture some images at medium range, and finish off with close-ups that concentrate on

I once watched a group of camera-toting foreign visitors in a California supermarket giggling and snapping picture after picture of an American woman doing her shopping while wearing a full set of immense hair curlers. The tourists thought she was

Trend Privé Magazine 36

very amusing, but the poor woman was rightly annoyed. She was out about her business and was not an exhibit on display for the enjoyment of travelers from another country where, apparently, curlers are not so casually worn outside the home. As exotic as the folks from a country where you are a guest may appear to you, they aren’t circus performers, and you should treat them with respect.

Ask permission In the same vein, it’s good to ask permission to shoot, even if you only nod your head in the person’s direction before taking the picture to see if they smile or glower. That approach works even when there is a language barrier, because photography and taking pictures is a universal language. Once you’ve gotten the okay, suggest, even if only by gesture, that your subject resume their normal activities so your photos will look natural. When photographing children, you should always ask their parents first !!!

Offer thanks after shooting Let them know how much you appreciate the favor. If your subject is interested, you can show him or her the results of your shooting on your camera’s LCD. You can offer to mail a print or e-mail the photo, if appropriate. When photographing street musicians and other performers, it’s only polite to leave them a tip in exchange for capturing their art in a photo.

Be aware of taboos and legal restrictions Some cultures frown on photographic images of people. Photographing women (or even a man asking a woman for permission to shoot) can cause problems. You may get into trouble photographing soldiers, military installations, airports, or even some public buildings. Try to learn about these restrictions in advance.

Interiors For interior shots, you’ll need a wide setting to capture most rooms or spaces. Unless you’re shooting inside a domed stadium, cathedral, or other large open space, you’ll find yourself with your back to the wall sooner or later. A wide angle lens helps you picture more of a room in one image.

Exteriors Exterior photos often require a wide-angle setting for the same reason. The structure you’re shooting is surrounded by other buildings, and you can back up only so far. A wide angle is required

to grab an image from the best (or only available) vantage point. Some of the other small but important things to keep in mind are :

Don’t worry about language barriers Guides make their money based on your belief that you need someone who “speaks the language.” Tourism is big business in most countries these days, and anyone you encounter in hotels, restaurants, or on the street will have vast experience in dealing with English speakers

Choose your hotels carefully I stayed in a quiet, tiny 18-room hotel nestled deep in the cobblestoned spider web streets of the ancient quarter of the city, within a hundred yards of the cathedral. Although the hotel’s 18th century building was older than the USA, it was freshly remodeled, had air-conditioning, WiFi, and a friendly family-run staff. My cost? $66 a night.

Eat right Enjoying—and photographing—the local food while you travel is part of the fun. But keep in mind that those restaurants near the tourist attractions don’t have to please you, because they don’t depend on repeat business. In Valencia, the “Menu of the Day” offerings are usually the cheapest way to have a tasty meal at any restaurant, but I found that the tourist traps were charging 20 to 25 Euros for these meals. But I found better food and service at the restaurants favored by Valencians, at 10 Euros or a buffet at less than 10 Euros. If you’re looking for interesting photos, turn to street vendors or a local market when it’s mealtime.

NEW YORK CITY

The Theater of Disappearance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas has created a site-specific installation for The Met’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. The Roof Garden Commission: Adrián Villar Rojas, The Theater of Disappearance will be on view from April 14 through October 29, 2017 (weather permitting). Villar Rojas—known for his large-scale installations—has transformed the Cantor Roof. Sixteen sculptures that fuse human figures with replicas of nearly 100 objects from the Museum’s collection, occupying a new black, white, and gray tiled floor, the installation also encompasses an environmental transformation of the space, including an extension of the existing pergola and new plantings, public furniture, and a newly designed bar. The exhibition is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Additional support was provided by Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon B. Polsky. Sheena Wagstaff, Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art, said: “This is the fifth year of the Museum’s newly redefined series of Cantor Roof Garden commissions. For his project, Adrián Villar Rojas took on the colossal task of investigating the Museum’s collecting practices from a personal socio-historical viewpoint, laying open his reinterpretation of the collection free of the usual underpinnings of curatorial interpretation and historical reference. In the process, he holds a mirror up to what we do at the Museum, questioning how we elect to present cultural history over time.” To realize the project, Villar Rojas immersed himself in the Museum’s history and collections, holding conversations with individuals across the institution, including curators, scientific researchers, objects conservators, and imaging specialists. He has also reconciled the Cantor Roof’s many functions as a gallery, a bar, and a popular vantage point from which to view Manhattan’s expansive skyline. The artist integrated these aspects of the space into his installation by working each element—from the floor to the bar—into the conceit of a fantastical event in which white tables are punctuated by black sculptures, all coated in a layer of dust. In accepting the commission, the artist encountered a history of human culture that emerges from the Museum’s galleries. The Theater of Disappearance presents a story of objects presented without historical interpretation. Using 3D scanning and advanced imaging techniques, the Museum scanned and replicated objects from the collection. In parallel, using the same technology, human figures were also scanned; the models’ bodies and gestures captured as if they were objects. The 3D models were then spliced together with the artifacts to form sculptural amalgamations, resulting in sculptures that absorb and re-present the imagery of Museum objects, being held and touched, unconstrained by demarcations of culture or time. In probing the Museum’s role in framing historical truth, Villar Rojas succeeds in questioning its traditional presentations, allowing for the reactivation and a reinterpretation of art and human culture. The Roof Garden Commission: Adrián Villar Rojas, The Theater of Disappearance was conceived by Sheena Wagstaff, Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art, and curated by Beatrice Galilee, Daniel Brodsky Associate Curator of Architecture and Design, both of The Met’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, in consultation with the artist. It is the fifth in a series of site-specific commissions for the outdoor space. The Roof Garden Commission: Adrián Villar Rojas, The Theater of Disappearance is featured on The Met website, as well as on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter via the hashtag #CantorRoof.

Adrián Villar Rojas Adrián Villar Rojas (Rosario, Argentina, born 1980) recent solo exhibitions include: Fantasma, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (2015); Rinascimento, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Torino, Italy (2015); Today We Reboot The Planet, Serpentine Gallery, London (2013); The Evolution of God, Highline, New York (2013); and Poems For Earthlings, SAM ART Projects, Musée du Louvre, Paris (2011). Major international exhibitions include: the 6th Marrakech Biennale, Marrakech, Morocco (2016); The Most Beautifull of All Mothers, the 14th Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul, Turkey (2015); Storylines: Contemporary Art at the Guggenheim, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2015); and Return the World, Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany (2012). Villar Rojas has been the recipient of several awards including the Sharjah Biennial Prize, awarded by the Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) (2015); the Zurich Art Prize at the Museum Haus Konstruktiv (2013); and the 9th Benesse Prize in the 54th Venice Biennial (2011). The Theater of Disappearance seeks to dialogue with the vision and division of The Met’s patrimony. An entire cartography of human culture seems to emerge from the Museum’s wings and rooms. Rather than a mirror of facts, the Museum becomes a version of them: America’s map of human activity on earth, a scale-model account of who we are and how we got here. Trend Privé Magazine 39

UrbiCulture The Urban Farming Movement That’s Changing Denver By Katie Jeddeloh

Among the pavement, traffic, and high-rises of Denver, Colorado, a farming movement has begun. From across the city and front range, people gather to plant and harvest kale, chard, cucumbers, leeks, and more—and UrbiCulture Community Farms is at the center of it. UrbiCulture is a collection of small, nonprofit urban farms all across the bustling hub of Denver. Despite their size, the largest one being just under two acres, the farms produce tens of thousands of pounds of vegetables in their growing season in all kinds of varieties you won’t see in the grocery store.

We chatted with Candice Orlando, the founder of UrbiCulture, to find out more. “UrbiCulture has gone beyond my imagination of what it could have become. In the beginning, my main goal was making sure fresh vegetables were accessible to all people whether they had money or not. I also wanted to work on transforming front yards and unused spaces—so many front yards are just grass, and the water for these lawns can be used for food.” Urban gardening is a way residents in big cities are helping out their communities. UrbiCulture does a twice-weekly pay-what-youcan farmstand in the growing months, making delicious, healthy produce available to the economically disadvantaged. The farmstand takes the ritz out of organic food and makes it something for everyone to enjoy. They also do educational gardens at elementary schools to help kids learn about agriculture—and bring them nutritious cafeteria food that they helped to cultivate. www.ucfarms.org or www.groundworkcolorado.org

“This year we farmed on only one acre of Denver Public Schools property, but almost 13,000 pounds went to cafeteria food in just a month and a half of harvesting. They also processed it, canned it and froze it so they can continue to use it throughout the year,” said Candice. But just because it’s sold at pay-whatyou-can prices and used in school cafeterias, don’t for a second think that the vegetables are second-rate. To supplement income, UrbiCulture also sells to a number of exciting restaurants in Denver, including those from the Edible Beats restaurant group, a local favorite for hip and unique dining. The produce is popular in vegan and vegetarian dishes especially, with a fresh, unique look you won’t find in grocery store vegetables. Also, the organic growing methods Trend Privé Magazine 46

provide non-synthetic, whole nutrients to your body, making UrbiCulture’s vegetables a beautiful, ethical, and healthy choice. The environment gets a benefit out of the farms, as well. The differing varieties of vegetables bring genetic variance to the environment, strengthening soil quality and going against the grain of uniform GMO corporate farming. “[Grocery store] food goes so many miles from farm to plate, traveling from where it was picked to the grocery store, then from there to our house, and finally into our bodies. Think about all the carbon emissions that uses. Also, the food we’re growing thousands of miles away is picked green, and they ripen it in the truck with gas. That just doesn’t seem natural!

Overall, urban gardening can be a major asset in big cities by aiding health, the environment and the community, and UrbiCulture is setting the example for it in Denver. Candice Orlando is determined and hopeful for the things to come with her urban gardening collective. “There are so many challenges, but we want to stand in as a vehicle for what is wanted and what is needed in the Denver community.” UrbiCulture has recently merged with national organization Groundwork Denver, adding to their resources and opportunities. You can learn more at the UrbiCulture Community Farms Facebook page, and their website.
