Like every other little girl, I’d always wanted to be a fashion designer. From the moment I could hold a pencil, that was it! For years I’d traipse around with my sketchbook drawing these deformed figures with outfits that would make the fashion police want to go into retirement. One day in 2007 however, my life changed forever. “How?” I hear you ask... well.. if you must know, I watched “The Devil Wears Prada” on TV lol, don’t laugh! Whilst all my friends wanted to be pretty Anne Hathaway (post makeover), I looked

past her skivvying around and set my sights on the ruthless Miranda. She was just the epitome of the word “boss” and so confident in herself and what she was doing. As mean and ruthless as she was, I wanted to be that witch! (substitute the ‘W’ for a ‘B’ ha!) I’d always loved fashion and writing but the thought of being a magazine editor had never crossed my mind. It was only when I saw the things she was able to do and the passion and skill she had when doing them, it was then that I realised; this is what I want to do forever. As a student, when the opportunity for this project arose, as you an imagine I was over the moon. This is not only my first magazine, but also TrendsetUK’s first magazine and everybody here on the team knows how highly anticipated this has been for you all.

Page 12-13

The amount of hard work and effort that has been put into this is crazy and none of this would have been possible without every member of the team, who I’d like to thank tremendously! The primary magazine issue embodies the element of spring – it’s all about new beginnings and growth. We’ve got everything from vibrant prints to monochrome and everything in between to set you up for the coming months. With up to date exclusive trainer releases to street snaps and Look Books, the TSUK Magazine has it all. Let me tell you, putting this magazine together has been a roller coaster but it was one

2013 hottest kicks ............................................................. Words by Sam Adegunle

We’re still in the early stages of the year and already we’ve seen some quality sneakers being released and announced. Everything you can imagine from Nike’s OG Huaraches, Ewing 33 Hi’s and Low top Balenciaga Arenas have dropped, as well as some classic and eclectic unchaining from the likes of Jordan Brand, Adidas and Reebok. Celebrities such as Ronnie Fieg, Teyana Taylor and Big Sean have even come together and collaborated with various well-respected brands in order to add a touch of their fresh to many sneaker collections, sending the blogosphere crazy; we see you liking the pics on our Instagram page. There are still a good few months of the year to go however, with so many more sneakers to be released; so myself and the good folks at Trendset UK have decided to bring to you what we think will be the best of the best for the remainder of the year; in both high and low end for sneakers. The only problem with this, is that you can’t forecast unprecedented quickstrikes, hyperstrikes and limited edition collaborations. Nevertheless, just look at this as a preview of the best to come and thank us later. Set calendar dates, book overtime at work, make room for new boxes, do what you must; it’s looking like a great year for sneakers.

999’s

New balance

A classic silhouette that has seen a remarkable resurgence in popularity over the past year. The tonal colourways used on the 999’s, 1500’s and many more have influenced a number of newer manufacturers who represent functionality and comfort. An everyday shoe for everyday life.

Arenas

Balenciaga Pusha T brought these to our attention by modelling these on his Instagram page in a variety of colourways. The fusion of different materials is what interests us the most, that and the fact that they don’t resemble the Arenas that came before them. Both iconic in design.

Panelled

Jordan Retro's These haven’t retroed since their initial release in 2000. However, there have been rumours of a Grape and Laney pack circulating as early as 2006 and with the Grapes dropping in early May, Jordan Brand have confirmed that these will be releasing for the holiday season of 2013. As happy as many will be to hear that they’ll be out, we can’t help but feel that these should be released nearer to summertime due to the nice bright blue and yellow accents that go with the all-white upper.

nike Hurrache’s Although the Free Run and Flight renditions of these came out last year, the OG models were the ones that we were all waiting for. Modelled after the Mexican sandals, the neoprene and Spandex sock lining makes these stylish and comfortable, a trainer everyone should love.

Giuseppe zanotti One of the few designer trainers that have been heralded by fashionistas are the Zanotti Hi’s. High tops with the gold straps personify high quality and high fashion. These are a shoe that can easily be used to transition between casual wear and formal dress, something that just screams ‘celebrity’. 8

Suedes

Puma An iconic basketball trainer that has seen its popularity rise off the court a la Converse All Star, these are honestly one of the most comfortable shoes that you could ever hope to walk in. A variety of different colourways means that there’s something for everyone here. Simple and stylish.

nike Roshe's The breakout shoe of 2012 that had the masses rejoicing due to its sock-like comfort and value for money, the Roshe Run is coming back in the form of a slip on shoe for the ladies. Being released in three different colourways, these are due to make serious waves even if they don’t drop this summer.

Saucony

Grid 9000s

Pusha T’s brand Play Cloths has released two successful collaborations with the independent trainer manufacturer Saucony, these collabs partially helped to raise awareness and popularity for the brand. Their versatility, range of colorways and value for money will make these a sure fire hit this summer and for months to come.

Nike hyperfuse A modern take on a staple among many sneakerheads across the world, the Hyperfuse 90’s have been getting a lot of love on the streets as well as on Instagram. Hopefully Nike do this model justice by releasing some new colourways over the rest of the year.

patrick ewing Ewing Focus

A shoe that very few thought would see the light again, Patrick Ewing took signature shoe retros to a level that has seen titans like Shaquille O’Neal and Andre Agassi return to their sponsors. These hi-tops have seen their popularity rise since their release late last year, being sported by the likes of A$AP Rocky, Pusha T and ScHoolboy Q. 9

Leomie Anderson

............................................................................................................................................... Words by Chantelle Karembo

TrendsetUK recently caught up with the rising star that is, Premier model Leomie Anderson. Seeing her face any and everywhere at the moment, we wanted to get to know a little bit more about the beauty herself.

12

Making her debut for many on the Channel 4 reality TV series “The Model Agency”, Leomie was revealed as a young, up and coming model to watch; nobody anticipated just how hard they should be watching however. In a astonishingly short space of time, the 5 ft 10 model has racked up quite name for herself in the fashion world. Having walked for the likes of Rihanna For River Island, iconic fashion house Ungaro and having just recently been unveiled as one of the faces for Japanese brand, Uniqlo’s most recent campaign, there seems to be no stopping her. Aside from these, it’s hard forget her involvement in the most recent of both the New York and London Fashion Week shows; walking a total of twelve shows at a time, just to name a few other achievements under her belt.

TrendsetUK exclusive interview Words by Aniah Boakye-Smith Photographer Christina Ebenezer Stylist TrendsetUK Team MUA Marie Chantal

20

MAIN FEATURE Arriving in true celebrity fashion, Gordon Egwu better known as GFrSH steps into the studio a good few hours later than planned but when one arrives with alcohol and high spirits, what’s the problem? Making no less than five trips to and from his car, it took at least three members of the team plus GFrSH himself to lug what seemed to be his entire wardrobe inside the studio. We had asked GFrSH to bring in five different outfits and a few of his favourite or trademark items of clothing, beyond our wildest imaginations did we expect this. Whoever it was that said girls know no limit when it comes to clothing, clearly hadn’t met GFrSH! The studio was filled with an entire clothes rail, bags and boxes galore, with a plethora of looks and outfits ranging from the suave and sophisticated, to the undoubtedly experimental. Taking off his huge, bright orange puffer coat GFrSH got straight to business, selecting a few items that represented his style, then leaving the styling team to work with these pieces and complete the final looks.

“ The studio was filled with an entire clothes rail, bags and boxes galore, with a plethora of looks and outfits” “Mr Frsh’s set of wheels is the epitome of all black everything”

The photo shoot that took place in East London, home to London’s hipsters and trend setters alike featured Gfrsh in a scope of outfits ranging from a tux, complete with sparkly Jimmy Choo slippers to a sports luxe inspired leather two piece. In between outfit changes and make up touch ups, we got to see the real GFrSH for ourselves. Let me tell you this, he might have to touch on the house music scene because he can cut some shapes! Trying and failing to teach me how to shuffle, it was nice to get to know the man behind the music. As mentioned earlier, somebody was running a little late. It was actually to the point where the studio was close to closing and we hadn’t even touched on the interview yet. What else to do but do the interview in the Bat Mobile?! Mr Frsh’s set of wheels is the epitome of “all black everything”; matte black Range, with tinted windows and black rims.. ahhhh yeah! But anyway, in his own surroundings, we got a little bit more in depth with GFrSH covering everything from Legoman 2, Kanye kilts, The Saturdays and Retro 6’s; read on to see how the interview went down.

Hey Gfrsh, thanks for taking time

So there’s a lot to expect from this

You joined the music scene quite

to us. Tell us what’s been going on?

working with the most?

pers and you also studied economics

What’s new?

Gfrsh: Legoman 2 is new and that’s the most important thing to happen to everybody this year. Tell us a little bit about it?

Gfrsh: It’s basically a feature mixtape. It’s laden with features from the likes of Blade Brown, to Squeekz, to Ratlin, to Krept and Konan, Cashtastic, Tinie Tempah, Wretch 32, Chipmunk, Sneakbo and the list goes on.

Gfrsh: [hesitates] Probably, who ever is the fastest because obviously you’re paying for studio time and some people don’t come prepared. They come to the studio with their verse half written and then they’re changing bits and then they just cost you a lot of money and then they take ages to record on top of that, so they are the worst people to work with. Personally, my favourite person to work with on this mixtape was Richie Montana who was my engineer. Why was that?

Gfrsh: He brought out the best in me to tell the truth. 21

which makes you an unlikely candidate for the rap scene, what was it exactly that got you interested in the music industry?

Gfrsh: To be honest, if I’m completely, completely honest, it was boredom in the sense that I was just bored in what I was doing already. So did you go into the economics industry?

Gfrsh: No, not at all. I was basically bored at uni and I decided that I didn’t really do what I was supposed to be doing and then I just started making music on that basis and then I suppose, with the prospect of earning lots of money [laughs]

MAIN FEATURE You also went to private school, with such

*interviewer interrupts* At the same

an education why did you not choose to go

time?!

down the more educational route?

Gfrsh: [laughs] At the same time literally! Simply because I like to see a lot of things. I’m literally getting inspiration from everything around me. Strictly musically, it ranges from your James Blake’s to you Future’s and Gucci Mane’s. Very, very diverse. I like the Saturdays song right now, the one with Sean Paul. I like pop, I like everything.

Gfrsh: It was something that was thrust upon me... [pauses] in life there are trodden paths that make the most sense and they are always the safest, but with safe choices the risk is so low that the rewards are equally as low. I’m a person that needs bigger rewards so I’m willing to take bigger risks. So the experiences that came with your education, would you say they have contrib-

So, outside of music what are you inter-

uted to your music career?

ested in?

Gfrsh: They are everything to it. Like, I wouldn’t be the person I am, without the path that I walked and my music is a representation of me, completely.

Gfrsh: Obviously shopping; for anything, I like buying. I think I have a problem with actually consuming, so anything that involves buying stuff and enjoying the stuff that you’ve bought is a bit of me.

Who are you inspired by musically?

Gfrsh: Everybody and everything that I see, so I write my verses whilst I drive.

Who would you say are your favourite designers at the moment? Gfrsh: My favourite designer right now is Damir Doma alongside UK brands such as Cloth Surgeon and Trapstar. I love a Trapstar jacket and I love a Cloth Surgeon leather. Apart from that, I’m not really a person who chooses clothes on the basis of who made the garment. I do like Alexander Wang at the moment as well.

How would you describe your personal style in three words?

Gfrsh: Frsh... [after thinking for a few seconds] frsh frsh frsh! That would be the easiest way to describe it. [Laughs] Alright, my Instagram stalking tells me that you’re very much into your trainers. What are your goto pair at the moment? 22

MAIN FEATURE Gfrsh: Jordan 6 Infared’s. That is it, that is my everyday pair. They go with everything, they’re comfortable and they’re sick and they make me a little bit taller. Speaking of creativity.. I see you’re into this erm.. this quite controversial man dress/skirt/kilt/thing.. Gfrsh: It’s not a dress! (speaking of the one featured in the photo shoot) it’s just a long hoodie. I designed it. I designed it with Cloth Surgeon for myself. [stern face] It’s not a dress, men don’t wear dresses.

I guess it’s safe to say that you’re fashionably inspired by Kanye West?

Gfrsh: Most definitely, he’s a style icon of our day and age, especially for the urban scene. It would be foolish to say that I wasn’t influenced by him slightly but I’m also influenced by walking through Camden or Shoreditch or anywhere or even down to the people around me. 23

When you first started out on the music scene you were seen as a pioneer fashion-wise. Now that style for men in the urban scene has developed, do you still see yourself as up there or do you think everyone else has caught up?

Gfrsh: No. They tryyy, they’re always looking on my Instagram and they’re tryinggg! I feel for them though [laughs] but let me tell you, I enjoy trying to push the boundaries further and further and finding new things and being more creative when it comes to clothing and then, even

I’ll see Tinie wear something, same way I’ll see my manager wear something. This jacket I’m wearing right now, we went to Amsterdam.. me, Tinie, Dizzie, a whole bunch of people and I saw him wearing it, it was so nice I couldn’t even say anything to him!

Speaking

of

management,

MAIN FEATURE

you’re managed by Disturbing London. Do you have any input into the clothing designs?

Gfrsh: Oh nah nah, we just model. For Frsh wear though, I’m very hands on. It’s very rare that we see you

without

something

“Frsh”, is this line available for public purchase?

Gfrsh: Frsh wear is my own clothing label that I started. It’s basically just hats, T-shirts and basic apparel and it is available on www.gfrsh.com or just www.frshwear.com

Speaking of the name “Frsh”, how did that come about?

Gfrsh: That literally came about from the love that I have for being fresh and loving clothes, so much so, that when I was sixteen I would literally save all my travel money and walk to school. Then go to Croydon, late night shopping every Thursday and buy one thing, brand new every week. I remember working the whole summer holidays, earning £600 when I was like 16 and blowing it on one Avirex jacket and walking to work until I got paid the next month. That how much I love clothes.

It’s clear to see that of late,

fashion

has

really

blossomed for men. What are your views on men’s fashion now to what is was, say five

Gfrsh: If I’m honest, I think it’s always been at a certain level, it was just that it was kept to an elite few. Now with obviously the internet and everything else, it has become more accessible to everyone.

years ago?

24

As far as its actual positioning in the real world it’s always been there at the forefront of everything, it’s just that we didn’t have access to it. It wasn’t that people couldn’t afford it, its just that we weren’t aware of certain brands existence. Also with the advent of hip hop and people like Kanye West, this obviously helps a lot.

TrendsetUK’s 5 Best Dressed trendsetters ..................................................................................................................................................... Words by Melissa Afriyie

01

From singers, to rappers to fashion personnel, the plethora of fashion expression in the industry has reached new heights as of late. For this reason, it was hard for us here at TrendsetUK to pick a mere five but after much deliberation, we bring to you some of the hottest style icons right now; noted for their bold, daring and highly iconic style.

Christine Centenera

Leading at Number 1 place we have Christine Centenera. Fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar (Australia) and also freelance stylist, this young lady definitely knows how to work her wardrobe! Her casual yet bold style allows her to slay the most daring looks. Having assisted Kanye as a Consultant during his SS12 launch, Christine has admitted her undeniable love for patent leather and metal detailing. Surprisingly, the diva claims she owns just 50 pairs of shoes which is astonishing considering her numerous amounts of outfits! The style icon has stated she puts her outfits together depending on her mood in the morning, building from her shoes upwards. During a recent interview, Christine informed that her staple piece of clothing is a well tailored black blazer. TrendsetUK have awarded this fashionista 5 STARS! This lady is undoubtedly a dark horse! We have definitely not seen the last her!

Kanye West

02

Style on legs, the man himself! It would be problematic if we did not include Mr. West in our top 5. Hate him or love him, Kanye West has one of the most extraordinary yet fashionable sense of style. Best known for breaking all fashion boundaries, the father-to-be has rocked outfits which include a leopard shirt paired with a red leather blazer and how could we forget, his recent appearance in a Givenchy leather kilt. Yikes! Kanye has confessed his passion for designing, claiming he had the desire to design clothes and shoes since he was in fourth grade. The rapper previously created a clothing line named ‘Pastelle’ which unfortunately never released. ‘Ye has since launched a full women’s line and is now rumoured to be bringing back his ‘Eponymous’ fashion line. Kanye is due to travel to Paris for two months to develop the line alongside ‘babymama’ Kim Kardashian.

28

Scott Disick

03

Need we say more? Scott Disick has to be one of the most well-dressed men to grace the earth. The 29-year-old, who claimed to style himself based on the look American Psycho character Patrick Bateman, is well-known for his ‘sharp’ and dapper approach to fashion. Having previously described the current fashion trends as ‘casual’ and ‘unconcerned with presentation’, it is interesting that there appears to be a turn in the evolution of Disick’s style. Disick is now channeling his inner ‘Yeezy’ as recent images show the father-of-two in leather pants paired with a plaid shirt. Casual much? With that being said, Disick remains an iconic figure in the world of fashion and predominantly faithful to his suits. He claims his ideal designer choice for a suit would be Kiton, a luxury brand based in Italy which dedicate about 25 hours of labour into each suit!

Rihanna

04

To all my ladies in the place with style and grace’. Ok maybe not grace, but this girl has definitely got style! At number 4, we have Barbadian beauty Rihanna. After creating her own fashioned based TV programme, ‘styled to rock’ and launching her own River Island clothing line just under a month ago, there seems to be no stopping this ‘RiRi’ in the world of fashion. From baggy Trapstar t-shirts and Harem jeans to sophisticated custom dresses by Azzedine Alaia, Rihanna definitely knows when and how to bring it to the table! Rihanna says she wants her current line to appeal to all types of girls and also wants them to feel comfortable but edgy. Whether edgy means throwing a few random pieces together, she sure knows how to pull it off!

05

Tinie Tempah

In 5th place is fashion figure and homegrown beauty, Tinie Tempah. Not only has he got the looks to make you ‘pass out’; his sense of style also makes him one of the country’s hottest artists. Crowned GQ’s best dressed British man in 2012, Tinie’s diverse wardrobe includes camouflage quarter lengths, tasseled loafers and as expected, dozens of pieces from Tinie’s own brand ‘Disturbing London’. The label which exclusively launched in Selfridges just under a year ago, offers a contemporary spin on classic urban clothing with statement graphic jumpers, tees and gym vests in which combined a tailored blazer, tapered denim jeans and some wayfarer shades allows anyone to achieve the ‘Tempah look’. Although Tinie has admitted he is a ‘sneakerhead’ and does not really like shoes (which explains the countless appearances in converse and suits) he has however confessed his love of slip-ons; in his own words, ‘You don’t have to wear any socks, you don’t have to think about it’. His favourite pairs include Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Coo and Alexander McQueen. 29

#fashionfauxpas? ............................................................................................................................

The new trend of kilts / oversized T-shirts for men has taken the fashion world by storm. We asked for your opinion of this trend over various networking sites.

“ Celebrities such as kanye west and ASAP Rocky have been seen wearing kilts, long tees and dresses. What do you think of this current trend? ”

The instagram followers said... [@] SHANNONLVINTAGE I think it’s a really interesting silhouette! Women have been dressing like men for years, the fabrics/cuts/prints of these pieces keep them masculine, it’s not like they’re pink and frilly! Love it. Menswear has been so generic for years!

[@] TEEFLIRTY I truly believe that fashion is almost at a point where the masculine and feminine are at par, in other words, trying to avoid characterizing and being Unisex but whatever style/trend you choose is up to you. I say most people are just copycats. And I agree with @ evonnadevaughn_stylist

[@] RAYZUSCHRIST First of all it’s not a dress and neither of them wear dresses. Kanye wearing a givenchy kilt and Asap rocky wearing a rick owens drawstring kilt in the long live asap video just shows that they have a very eccentric fashion sense. And to be honest in a world full of clones we need people who dare to be different.

[@] MELTEM_GUKCAN A man should dress like a man.. but times are changing people are running out of ideas.. females dress like guys! But men in kilts is taking it a tad too far. [@] RUBBIE_G I dont think this look works for either of the parties involved. I’m very traditional and believe that men should wear MENS clothes and women should wear WOMENS clothes.

[@] TEEFLIRTY @rae_montoya Only people with the right set of mind can understand that the boundaries between men and women’s fashion is just a trip switch. [@] RAMIREZESTEVEZ it’s high end fashion. But some people are so close minded and care what other think that they would not have the courage to pull it off. It shouldn’t matter what a next person is wearing as long as feel its style for them. Doesn’t mean your gona think the same way. But it’s fashion by high end labels like #RafSimmons #Givenchy and so on.

[@] ALLENLBC It won’t catch on [@] PHOTODIARYOFABADMAN Awful, truly awful [@] YASMIN_GIBBOR They usually have great style but this isn’t cool I don’t rate it way to feminine
