“Are You Running on a Full Tank?”
B
ridges crossed, mountains climbed, and relationships built. But when you think about goal-setting and the work that lies ahead of you, I ask the question, are you running on a full tank? Although many accomplishments transpired last year, do you have a game plan for moving forward in life, and in business this year? What are you doing to improve your current situation? In getting to the next level, be sure to fill your tank with a progressive strategy. Whether your road to success is personal, spiritual, or financial, re-evaluate yourself, your surroundings, and your objectives. Get rid of the crud, the weight in your trunk, and the unwanted baggage, in order to create a clean and positive path of direction. Once you determine your new direction, you can establish a precise plan for how you wish to move forward. Fill your tank with positive resources, education, and financial growth opportunities. Don’t forget while driving such a long route, that nutritious eating habits, and physical exercise, help to maintain a strong mind and good health. Pack some patience, perseverance, and knowledge, because they will all play a part in your journey’s success. Running on a full tank offers many benefits. But most importantly, it assures you have enough energy to run the route, and finish your journey. Remember that mileage is important, and sometimes the longest route can be the most rewarding. Obstacles and stops may slow you down along the way, but if you’ve got a good map, are well prepared, and have determined your purpose, you will reach your destination successfully and reap the rewards you set out to achieve.

or four hundred years, black Americans have proven themselves to be a courageous, resilient, resolute, and honorable people. More so than any other ethnic group, there is little in the long history of black America for which black Americans need be ashamed. However, in the twenty-first century, there is one circumstance that should be a source of embarrassment or shame for all black Americans. It is the voting record of black Americans during the first four decades of the Equal Opportunity era. (Source: www.project2019.com)
During the month of August 2015, I am inquiring readers of trendsetters to to Trendsetters Magazine to submit their opinions on the subject, “Why Should We Vote?” All inquiries will be read and the most informative responses will be featured in an upcoming publication. Submit all entries via email to: dpi@trendtotrendmag.com. During the past decade we’ve witnessed some remarkable results of people voting and as we watch the daily news, it is evident that elected officials from all sides continue to disagree on a lot of important issues. We all have the right as U.S. citi-
zens to express our opinions on popular issues through the power of voting. Trendsetters are people doing positive things in their communities. One of the most positive things you can do as a trendsetter in your community is to register to vote. Secondly, make your way to the polls on voting day. Be a trendsetter in your community and exercise your right to vote. Submit your inquiry to me and share your opinion. I look forward to hearing your responses. Sincerely, Derek Payne, VP.

atthew A. Weaver Jr., a Virginia native, was no stranger in the fashion industry. In fact, whenever he was out on the town, most people wondered “who was that well-dressed man?” From compliments of “nice outfit” to just a modest head nod, Matthew definitely knew how to stand out from the rest with his classic sense of style, sophistication, creative flair, and solid presence of what a gentleman should look like. After graduating from college to become a teacher, Matthew quickly changed career paths and decided to follow his passion: fashion. He obtained his fashion niche in New York City over 40 years ago and migrated to Atlanta where he worked in a men’s store in Buckhead. Growing frustrated with the fashion market dictating what men should wear, Matthew focused his eyes toward custom wear, prompting him to strike out and launch his own store called “Manstyles.” Matthew’s winning personality, signature style, and desire to help people master the art of their individual style has given him an impressive clientele list. He has also styled for Bravo’s T.V. show “The Atlanta Housewives.” His current business is operating as The House of Styles and has introduced an exclusive Dress Shirt line called the “High Boy” due to its collar and cuff design. These pieces, as well as other tailored designs, were available in Mr. Weaver’s signature line, “The Matthew Weaver Collection.” ■

ontray is a California native raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He was introduced to music at a very young age by singing in his church choir. As Rontray grew, he knew that singing was his passion, but never had the confidence to sing in front of large crowds and audiences. However, at age 13, he auditioned for the AMTC competition and left with the top singing finalist award. This achievement solidified his goal of becoming a great vocalist, and he began singing in multiple venues such as local talent shows, open mic nights, and even ventured into writing his own music. At age 15, he wrote, produced, and released his first mix tape, Minds of the Times, on soundcloud, which included R&B covers such as So Beautiful and Just Friends (Musiq Soulchild), and also original music such as Phone Call and My Gurl. At age 18, he independently released his first EP, I Chose You, which includes four original songs. Rontray plans to attend Georgia State University where he will co -major in music technology and vocal performance, and pursue a career as a singer/songwriter and producer.

helsi N. Glascoe is a heroine like no other. Born in Prince Georges County, Maryland, she was raised with a strong support system and family, and even stronger morals. These teachings were a godsend as they prepared her for the world’s trichotomy of good, bad, and ugly. Throughout Chelsi’s middle and high school career, she experienced highs and lows. Identifying with most transitioning teens, she too was a victim of bullying, depression, and lack of self-confidence until she realized her responsibility for her own happiness. With this new optimism, she dissected her pains to find her passions. She became a peer mediator and joined a myriad of after school activities from student government to cheerleading. Not all of them stuck (Chelsi was not as athletic as she assumed), but she prided herself on trying new things. The decision for college came, and there was a college tour to Clark Atlanta University that stole Chelsi’s heart. She arrived in her new environment with no family and friends, but was determined to establish a supportive network and firm foundation. She valued the opportunity of a fresh start and used her experiences in high school to guide her extracurricular activity choices in college. Her decision to major in Sociology reflected her passion for people and involvement in community service.

The focus of these programs was to provide the resources for young men and women to cultivate a change in their lives, and develop the courage to pursue their dreams. Graduating from Clark Atlanta University with a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology, she accumulated many honors and awards, her most prized being the Empowering Women: Campus Engagement Award, 2015. mazing things come in small packages. And don’t let the smooth taste of this 5’3” curvy figure fool ya. Taking the hiphop music industry by storm, singer, songwriter and business woman, Mz Hunny Lee is next in line to blow your mind with her mesmerizing blend of lyrical rap. Producing a thought-provoking message in each song, her adverse lyrics, and individuality is bringing change to the game. Born Amy Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mz Hunny came from a broken home. Her mother was sent to prison when Hunny was 5 years old, leaving she and her older sister behind. During her early years Hunny endured and saw a lot in the streets. But the struggle of the streets did not deter her from attending church and singing in the choir where she developed a passion for music. She reminisces about participating in elementary school talent shows and plays, and performing at the recreation center in her neighborhood. By the age of 12, Hunny had formed a few singing groups, was singing hooks for friends, and recording in the studio. But she soon became bored with basic singing, and decided to add rapping and songwriting to her list of talents. In 2011, Mz Hunny Lee joined an independent label and began performing live, entertaining audiences in Ohio, Michigan, and Atlanta, Georgia. After one year, the relationship with the label folded. A mild set-back, but remembering where she came from and where she wanted to go, Mz Hunny Lee was determined to go even harder. By mid-2012 Mz Hunny shot her first video and released her first single “I Wanna Love You” in iTunes, along with a sample mix tape titled “The Proposal,” which gained nearly 20,000 likes. Since that time, Mz Hunny Lee has performed all across the United States, and started her own tee-shirt line, influenced by her movement and on stage slogan #teamcameltoe. This energetic and creative young lady has branded herself through appearances, features on industry hip hop blogs, working with platinum producers, and was recently nominated for Best Female Artist in the Ohio Hip-Hop Awards. Although her sex appeal adds a little something sweet to the industry, Mz Hunny Lee packs a powerful punch. Her rugged style exemplifies a message of struggles and survival in the streets. Look out for her new single “Bag of Os” off her current mix tape title “Bag of Os,” and learn from it!!! ■

Growing up in Trinidad, life was difficult for Charles, who was one of seven children. He had to dig ditches in the countryside and work menial jobs to save enough money to travel to the United States, where he would later earn degrees from Howard University, MIT and Morgan State University. “The presidency is an opportunity to challenge students,” he said. “If I had the opportunity to get an education, there is no excuse for anyone.”
“Dr. Charles is a strong leader and a visionary who is passionate about organizational effectiveness and student success. He demonstrates the entrepreneurial spirit of Tiffin University,” said Tiffin University Board Chair, Claire Johansen. “I am looking forward to enhancing Tiffin University’s reputation of innovation by inspiring our team of faculty and staff to create transformational academic experiences and provide superior services and support to educate the future,” said Dr. Charles. “I believe that everything that we do should center on student success.” Before coming to Tiffin, Dr. Charles was the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Institutional Transformation at Fayetteville State University (FSU) in North Carolina. e in the United States of America are under attack in our personal health and we don’t even realize it. The American Food Industry has sold us out to the obesity epidemic. Technological advances in communication and transportation has placed everything we could ever need at the touch of a button. Now, as a result of the times, our waist lines continue to expand, our pancreas can’t excrete enough insulin to keep up with our intake of excess calories, our hearts work overtime to shove around the excess weight, and as a community, we are beginning to lose the battle of having a rich and productive lifestyle. At one time I was raised in a family where my dad was in the army and my mother stayed at home. My mom prided herself on making home cooked meals. We rarely ever ate out. It was just the norm. My brother and I were always outside playing and riding our bikes. I look back at our pictures and see how thin we were. But then there was a divorce, now dad is no longer there, and mom is working. The family dynamic was strained. Mom is now doing fast food two times a week; Twinkies and Star Crunches babysit us when we get home, and we are no longer the same little kids that we were just a year ago in Oklahoma. Within a year’s time of this new lifestyle, our bodies were well on their way to being obese. And the only thing that really changed was our diet. Fitness and food intake goes hand in hand. In order to maintain a healthy level of fitness you must intake foods that are rich in nutrients. When you eat healthy, your body feels healthy. Healthy foods are your fruits, leafy green vegetables, peanuts, and whole grains, brans, and oats. These foods help you with digestion, and are not

overly saturated with empty carbohydrate calories. They make your skin glow. Your mind is clear. You can think and process information. Performance in the workout class or just normal physical activity will almost seem effortless. There is a sense of balance within the body. The moment you eat fast food, processed foods, and all these sugary sodas and sweets, your body will feel the difference. Most processed foods, even though they look and smell like real food, have gone through an intense process where the nutrients have been lost. There are so many hormones and chemicals added for the purpose of delivering a beautiful looking entrée while sacrificing the most important part of eating, consuming nutrients. Look around and open your eyes and see what I’m telling you. We are losing this battle. Far too many people know a grand mother or an auntie that is taking dialysis three times a week due to kidney failure. More people are walking around with a loaded gun for a heart attack… excess belly fat. There used to be that one obese kid in class growing up that would bully everybody. Today there are many morbidly obese kids in class, and now they have high blood pressure and juvenile diabetes. We have got to get physically active. We have to stop this attack. We have to fight this obesity epidemic. For more ways to get active visit www.BigBonedFitness.com.

happening as well. Her long curly hair was starting to break, and her nails were thin and wouldn’t grow. Her stomach hurt all the time; she was tired. She had bruises all over her body. It wasn’t a good look but it was still better than being as heavy as she was. This went on for months, a year. During this time Dawn added caffeine pills to her weight loss cocktail and upped the amount of laxatives she was taking. Still the weight continued to come off, but every time Dawn looked in the mirror, she still saw the heavy set version of herself looking back. Maybe Dawn should have tried losing the emotional weight that she had been carrying around as she lost the physical pounds. By June 2014, Dawn Alexis Fusaro had lost over 90lbs. She looked great. She didn’t feel very good, but she could go into a regular store and buy clothes. The guys would smile at her out in public. She even felt sexy. That didn’t last though because as June turned to July Dawn’s health took a turn for the worse. Being thin didn’t matter anymore. Dawn just wanted to be alive. Look for the next installment of Dawn Fusaro's story, "Dying to Be Beautiful", in the next issue of Trendsetters To Trendsetters Magazine.

ave you ever wanted something so badly that you would do anything to get it? Even if it meant taking chances, maybe even making a mistake or two along the way? Dawn Alexis Fusaro did just that. She took a few chances as she traveled down the road of weight loss, but her biggest mistake was the shortcut she was about take. It almost cut her life short. She couldn’t see it though; she was dying to be beautiful. “Take one pill every four hours; do not exceed six pills in twenty four hours. Use as directed to lose excess water weight.” Those were the instructions on the box. After about two weeks, she started to notice that they were working. After 2 months, Dawn had lost about 15 pounds. It was amazing, and all for $4 a box. When five months had passed, and she was 30 pounds lighter, Dawn ran into a problem. The water pills that she had been taking faithfully seemed to have stopped working as well. What would she do? She liked the fact that she was getting smaller and didn’t want that to stop. So, she decided to start taking laxatives. One after every meal. it took a while to get used to how they made her feel - the cramping, the sudden urge to have to go to the restroom. You always had to know where the bathroom was where you were going. But, the weight kept coming off. Dawn started to notice other things

ello Trendsetters! First, let me start by saying thank you for allowing me to hold your attention for a few moments. My name is Dr. Linda Amerson (Dr. A). I hold a doctorate in Trichology – the scientific study of alopecia and scalp tissue disorders. In addition, I have been an entrepreneur for over 35 years. I reside in Arlington, Texas; I am a magna cum laude graduate from the Accredited International Institute of Trichology in Madison, Alabama. But, this not about me, it’s about our children. In 2014, we received essays from Mayaah Peppers, 12 years of age and Sanah Jivani, 17 years of age. The topic was, “I Have Alopecia, But it Does Not Define Who I Am,” for the opportunity to win a scholarship. They both did an excellent job on their essays! Our decision was to award 2 scholarships. The 1st CWAP was held in September 2012, and was a tremendous success! My musical skills were introduced as an ‘ice breaker’ rap theme song ‘Cruise With a Purpose’ to attendees. Unexpected rave reviews were received! “You never know where your career will turn, to enhance your passion and purpose.” Next, an in-studio rhythmic collaboration with world renowned music producer Victor ‘Phazz’ Clark flowed effortlessly in sync with Dr. A. It was released on DfwiRadio.com in June 2013 on my radio show Ask the Hair and Scalp Doctor. Continuing my purpose, the visual interpretation of the theme song was choreographed in a music video. Joining forces again were Victor ‘Phazz’ Clark and Dr. A. The completion and highly anticipated release date was September 19, 2015… during National Alopecia Areata Awareness month. Positive music reviews have been received from music producers and critics from Sweden, UK, Canada, Italy and USA to name a few. Allow me to share this music video review from Marsha A. Lampert. “This video really touched my heart, soul, and spirit because I have alopecia and am a professional musician. Through my music, I try very hard to educate others about my alopecia and wig wearing 24/7.” On Saturday, September 26, 2015, we will set sail on the ‘Tejas Yacht’ (Silver Lake Marina) from 8-11pm, on the beautiful Lake Grapevine, watching the sunset on our 2nd Cruise with a Purpose! The location is 2500 Fairway Drive Grapevine, Texas. The fee is only $99 per person. Our exciting agenda includes: presenting the scholarships to our recipients, viewing of our official music video…“Cruise with A
Purpose”, a short presentation about alopecia awareness, a memorable fashion show featuring world renowned designer Andre Terry of IMT Designs, as well as other designers, dancing, and performances by Lady Soul, Rich Vann and Dr. A. There will be delicious catered food by Charissa Singleton of C & T Devine Specialties, raffles, swag bags, surprise guests, massive media publishers, and we will just have a great celebration! xercising can get boring and redundant—even for a trainer. Working out at home can be unmotivating and sometimes even going to the gym can become too routine. There are millions of exercise regimens, a plethora of videos, and thousands of pieces of equipment that can break the monotony of any workout routine, but who has the time to find them or the space to put them in? Imagine making your world your gym in just 19 minutes with one fitness device. The Tension Fit Trainer is a revolutionary device that destroys the mundane, redundant, and lackluster workout dilemma. The Tension Fit Trainer (TFT) is a new portable fitness device which was conceptualized by Dr. Tremaine Young, whose collective background includes being a primary care physician, an engineer, and Division 1 athlete. Dr. Young naturally and passionately created the TFT for all fitness levels and abilities. His engineering mind conceptualized a versatile device that places the power of results and overall fitness back to the individual. The TFT was intentionally designed to allow the world to be the user’s gym. It incorporates muscle engagement and cardio burn into one experience. Dr. Young explains, “The freedom of not needing to purchase an expensive gym membership was a huge motivator.” I am a witness that the TFT is not just another new fitness product for you to get excited about for the moment, only to shelve it and collect dust until resolution time. The TFT offers a new, versatile, and safe way of exercising. I’ve trained clients on the beach, on the basketball court, in the gym, and at home. It incorporates strength, core function, cardio elevation, stamina sustainability, rehab adaptation, functional flexibility, and plyometric performance. TFT was designed specifically to follow the laws of proper ergonomics and human factors. Dr. Young says, “The TFT team is very confident that the masses will be fully accepting of my new invention,
Misty Copeland: First Black Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre ( (BPRW)(CNN)

merican ballerina Misty Copeland, a cultural phenomenon outside the dance world, has been promoted to the highest rank of the American Ballet Theatre, becoming the first African-American female principal dancer in the company’s 75-year history. The American Ballet Theatre announced the news Tuesday in a slew of promotions at one of the country’s top ballet companies. Copeland, 32, joined the company in April 2001 and was appointed a soloist in August 2007. She has been outspoken about her desire to become the first black woman to be named a principal dancer at the company. “My fears are that it could be another two decades before another black woman is in the position that I hold with an elite ballet company,” she wrote in her memoir, “Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina,” published in 2014. “That if I don’t rise to principal, people will feel I have failed them.” Copeland’s 14-year career at the American Ballet Theatre has been a series of milestones drawing attention outside the rarefied world of ballet. She has appeared in a Diet Dr Pepper commercial and danced atop a piano in Prince’s 2010 tour. When she became the first ballet dancer to appear in an Under Armour ad in 2014, the spot racked up more than four million views on YouTube within a week. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in San Pedro, California, Copeland began her ballet studies at 13, a late start for a dancer of her caliber. Her rise from modest beginnings to ballet crossover star has been the subject of numerous magazine articles, TV segments, a “60 Minutes” episode and the forthcoming documentary “A Ballerina’s Tale.”

Copeland was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2015 and was featured on one of five covers for the issue. Olympic gold medal gymnast Nadia Comaneci wrote in Time that Copeland’s story was one “of someone who followed her dreams and refused to give up. In that way, she is a model for all young girls,” Comaneci wrote. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from. If you have the passion like Misty, you can be the best at what you do.” As the New York Times noted, whenever Copeland danced leading roles with the company, “her performances became events, drawing large, diverse, enthusiastic crowds to cheer her on.” In a time when ballet companies across the country are looking for new audiences, crowds of young autograph-seekers swarmed the stage door after Copeland made her debut in the starring role of American Ballet Theatre’s production of “Swan Lake” -- the first AfricanAmerican dancer to do so. She has more than 500,000 followers on Instagram, who welcomed the news when she posted images showing the moment of the announcement.

t is the vision of the Robin Latimore Foundation to see cancer eradicated – a world free of the pain and suffering of this ...disease. Until that happens, we strive to minimize the negative impact cancer has on patients, their families and caregivers. We envision that each family affected by this disease will see themselves as victorious. They will know that they are supported, encouraged and empowered, and that our community rallies behind them. The Robin Latimore Foundation will celebrate their triumph over adversity and their victory over cancer. The Robin Latimore Foundation was birthed from a chance encounter. After reuniting with a college roommate, Atlanta vocalist... Robin Latimore soon discovered that her friend’s bald head was due to cancer treatments. Always someone who ate right, boasted a healthy physique, and looked the picture of health, her friend shared that she was battling breast cancer. That’s when Latimore realized that cancer has no respect of person, age or lifestyle. She educated herself and committed to educating others. From her desire to increase awareness and preventive measures, Latimore launched a musical extravaganza to reach the masses with her message of knowledge and support. “If during one of my shows at least one person learns how to become more aware of what's going on with their body and preventive measures to stop cancer before it spreads, then I'm happy,” says Latimore. “But it's my endeavor to reach my audiences and beyond and be a source of support for those survivors who may be having financial difficulties due to the extraordinary cost of medicines, doctor visits, special foods, etc.” From that simple chance encounter sprang the Robin Latimore Foundation, a nonprofit that strives to provide scholarships and stipends to assist and celebrate cancer survivors and their family and friends. Stipends will assist survivors with transitioning back into everyday life following treatment, and enable caregivers to continue assisting them in their daily wellness journey. Scholarships will be provided annually to further the education of students who are undergoing treatment or who have a parent undergoing treatment. We accomplish this mission through community outreach, awareness campaigns, and our yearly signature event. This year, our signature event, The Pink and Blue Extravaganza, will be held on October 10th, at 7 p.m. at The HyattRegency, Downtown Atlanta. Ticket holders should expect expert advice from several physicians of different disciplines relating to cancer prevention. There will be light fare, special musical guests, and my band will entertain at the end of our presentation for dancing and the celebration of our survivors. There will be other treats in store but you must get a ticket to know what's happening. Tickets will go on sale in July and you can get more information by visiting our Facebook page under Robin Latimore Foundation or on our website at www.robinlatimorefoundation.org.

t’s common knowledge around the nation that the four top issues plaguing our African American society include unemployment and poverty which go hand-inhand, establishing effective K-12 education, and securing the family unit. With the rising number of single parent homes where the mother or grandparents are usually the head of household absent of fathers, countless young men become permanent fixtures in the system, and young women start families before they themselves have reached graduation, it is no wonder we are losing our next generation of leaders to what seems like an abyss of “no return.” The dropout rates are staggering and the communities are creating an impression that we are failing those who would take the reigns after most of us have stepped down from our stations of purpose. The questions rise: “Who will take over when we are gone?” “Who will become our next Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglas, Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., Dr. Maya Angelou, Jackie Robinson, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Jacob Lawrence and even President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama?” These are just a select few of many who have made their mark on the pages of African American history and society as a whole. While there is still a lack of confirmation that Black Lives Matter in this nation, we have the earmarks of racism and inequality that are surfacing today like the constant rolling tides of yester-years. Always there…but the winds of disparity have made them more prominent and visible in a new age. In the midst of this apparent knowledge, one man and his determination not to lose our next generation of leaders, is standing up on the pedestal of ACTION to get a “re-ACTION” against irregularity within our communities. Emmy Award Winning Poet, Hank Stewart, known to many as “Hank Stewart Poet,” has accepted his call to leadership and blazed the trails of hope to stand toe-to-toe with biases that would attempt to steal our youth of tomorrow. Hank Stewart is the Founder of The Stewart Foundation (SF) that has been combating the prejudices facing our youth in the African American communities since 2006, and he is using his renowned White Linen Affair, hosted annually in Atlanta, Georgia, as one of the funding sources towards the cause. This affair began fourteen years ago initially as the platform to release his 3:57 a.m. CD with guest performers of the linguistic nature and melodic tunes. It was so successful that a desire to see it return has kept it ablaze ever since. After Hank’s commitment to service and community with the youth, in addition to his entertaining persona which got the attention of many, his fan-base of support began to flourish. His close friends encouraged him to take his ideals for the future, and activism with our anticipated youth leaders who are constituents of our choices—to the next level. Sensory Processing Disorder
PAULA L. SIMPSON AUTHOR AUTHORCORNER CORNER

n today’s society, many children are diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). SPD is simply the difficulty and /or inability to process environmental or internal information from the body’s natural senses. Many times children with SPD often are not being treated, due to lack of knowledge and known resources available. Many are unaware of what SPD is. How do they know if their child has it and what do they do about it? Many children with SPD have been misdiagnosed with having behavior disorders. Due to the unawareness and exposure of SPD, many parents have denied that this really exists. Parents/ caregivers often may often feel that their child requires a great deal of structure, particular foods/activities, or difficulty with engaging in day-to-day tasks in many different ways. If untreated, children with SPD may experience problems in multiple areas of growth and development. This can include but not be limited to eating, dressing, bathing, walking, running, jumping, attention span, school activities (handwriting, transitioning between activities, fine motor (limited play with various materials/textures, socialization (peer interactions) and the list goes on. Every day activities for example, teeth brushing, hair washing or getting a haircut can be challenging and stressful for the child and the caregiver. Fun activities become fearful such as eating ice cream, finger painting, playing in dirt, jumping on a trampoline, riding a bike and etc. The most important role of a child is play. A child with sensory related issues may experience the inability to engage appropriately, due to sensory challenges impacting the opportunity to experience a teachable moment during play. Mom of 6 year- old Adonis, says that her son has trouble with sitting still within the classroom. His teacher reports that he is constantly moving and is having trouble with his attention span during story time. Mom says he will only keep his socks, shirt and shoes on for a short time. Teacher reports that Adonis consistently disrupts the class due to his behavior. Getting out of his seat and walking back and forth. Adonis may be experiencing sensory related challenges or overload affecting his ability to focus and attend to tasks at school. There are many factors that may be contributing to Adonis’ behavior that may include but not limited to; the classroom environment (lighting, temperature, sounds/volume, smell, visual stimulation-seating position), clothing (itchy materials, tags scratching the skin, belt buckles/buttons are cold and the seam of the socks irritating toes just to name a few potential sensory challenges that may be affecting attention span during school. Parents and teachers are not expected to know all of the answers or even determine solutions. The role of parents, teachers and caregivers is to discuss concerns and provide as much information as possible. It is imperative should you suspect that your child is experiencing sensory related challenges, a comprehensive evaluation tool performed by a licensed healthcare professional is the best method in determining and evaluating the needs of your child. A treatment plan or sensory based diet can be tailored to meet the sensory based needs. There are many resources and assistance available to assist parents

with diagnosing and treating sensory related issues. School nurses, pediatricians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, ABA specialists, dieticians, teachers and caregivers all play an intricate role in determining or developing a plan tailored to meet the sensory needs for your child. Sensory issues are not just limited to a particular age; it is seen among groups from pediatric to geriatric population. The key to overcoming the challenges associated with Sensory Processing Disorder is being educated about the disorder and knowing your options, tools and resources available within your community. Knowing your options promotes the steps needed in helping your child accomplish the best functional outcomes while attaining developmental milestones. “Let’s make a difference, one child at a time!” Author- Paula Simpson is an experienced occupational therapist with specialized training in pediatric and geriatric population. She has a combined holistic and nurturing approach to help children/adults achieve optimal functional independence and achieve developmental milestones. My son at the time had a stuttering problem and he was just learning to read. Each night I would sit him in my lap and make him look up an animal, spell it, and we would read it out aloud.
So I created a 20-member host committee (My influenceHers), and allowed them to nominate their InfluenceHERs, and vote amongst the group for the top 5 candidates and then alternates.
I felt like changing it up a bit; I had 73 women and only 31 days. I wrote each lady’s name down and each night, randomly, my son would pull a name, I’d let him type the name, go find a picture, and then we would do a post about that person.

But the dreary weather did not dampen the excitement of thousands of jazz, soul and R & B fans who came out for the 2nd annual Art of Cool Music Festival (AOC) in the city of Durham, North Carolina, April 24-25. The festival, held over three days and in multiple venues in the revitalized “Bull City,” boasted a roster of acts ranging from independent and emerging artists such as singer Jesse Boykins III and saxophonist Mike Phillips, to the critically acclaimed and established artists, including the appointed “Godfather of Neo-Soul” Roy Ayers, and Grammy winners The Robert Glasper Trio, and Anthony Hamilton who served as the headlining acts. The AOC Festival invaded the Durham Armory, The PSI Theatre, and locally revered music venues Motorco and Pinhook on Friday. Various artists including AOC co-founder Al Strong, an accomplished jazz trumpeter in his own right, and area favorite Eve Cornelious, played these venues simultaneously, along with a Jam Session featuring multiple artists wrapping up the evening sometime after midnight. On Saturday, the main stage, located at the former home of the Durham Bulls baseball team, cranked up at 5pm with Soul Understated. ith the shifting that seems to have taken place in the Gospel (Inspirational) Industry, there couldn't have been a better time for the world to be introduced to LaJaye Britt. An ordained and affirmed Apostle, LaJaye also has a passion to translate the heart of God to the world through music. And so, with the help of his new record label, Heart Inspired Entertainment/Caroline/ Capitol Music Group, he is on the fast track to doing just that. LaJaye, originally from Washington, D.C., was raised in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of a Pastor. He gave his life to the Lord at the young age of 14. However, like many children raised in the church, it was R&B music that captivated him causing him to seek out a career in the secular world of music. In doing so, LaJaye has opened for various artists over the years such as Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men, Glenn Jones and Tisha Campbell to name a few. However, it was after God healed him of Sickle Cell that he realized he had to follow his TRUE calling. LaJaye released his first Gospel single "Stand Up" in 2013 with mediocre success, but it was his second single that made people stand up (no pun intended) and take notice. Shortly after the release of "Stand Up," LaJaye suffered a massive heart attack that nearly took his life. Shortly thereafter he was selected to become a spokesperson for The American Heart Association where he now travels the world sharing his testimony and promoting heart health. This traumatic experience led him to an old friend, R&B crooner Lenny Williams (Cause I Love You), who he teamed up with for his hit "It's Yours" which has been dominating many of the music charts both in the U.S. and abroad. Because of its success, LaJaye is set to re -release the single on his new label this spring in addition to a second single entitled "I'm Sorry." Both singles are sure to prick the hearts of the unchurched as well as the churched. LaJaye's first full length project so perfectly entitled "It's Time," is scheduled to be released this summer. His songs are sure to inspire and empower listeners to live above the influence of the world through Jesus Christ. His sound, infused with real life testimonies, will pull the listener in and help lead them to God's throne. Along with La'Jaye's talents as a singer/ songwriter, he is also a musician. His instruments include Guitar, Bass, Drums and Keys. To add to his list of credits, he also has some acting under his belt. In 2001 He starred in the lead role of David Payton's #1 Hit Gospel Stage Play, "A Good Man Is Hard To Find." Well, with all of this, it truly seems like his journey is only beginning, and from what I've seen and heard, we can only stand to get blessed by his ministry if we go along for the ride. Mayberry currently is the vice president of development for the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio. In this capacity, he assists the organization in reaching its mission, which is to, “Transform generations by prompting personal empowerment and economic self-sufficiency.” “I’m responsible for raising those dollars that will support the services and programs offered by the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio,” explained Mayberry. “The challenge is to raise enough funds that will help the Urban League keep helping people and organizations be successful. I like to say, ‘When we raise the tide, all the boats will floats. ’ ” Prior to the Urban League, Mayberry, from 2005 to 2014, held a series of directorship and management positions at Central State University (CSU), inclusive of senior level director of Annual Funds, director of Alumni Relations, director of Planned Giving and director of Development. He also served as senior manager of the Central State University Foundation. Making the decision to leave CSU for the Urban League was not easy for Mayberry. After all, he had worked for CSU for almost 10 years, and graduated from the storied institution with a bachelor’s degree in social welfare and sociology. “I have some extremely deep roots with the CSU family,” Mayberry said. “However, it was a natural match between the Urban League and Central State. Both play extremely important roles in servicing and empowering the African American community and the community at-large.” Before working at CSU, Mayberry had amassed an impressive career that helped to empower African Americans and other minorities and ethnic communities. Such positions were, minority and women business compliance officer for Montgomery County, statewide minority and small business development coordinator for the City of Dayton, executive director of Ecumenical Housing and Community Development Corp, which under Mayberry had an economic impact that exceeded $20 million; and executive director of Dayton Black Cultural Festival, Inc., which he developed to become the largest African American Arts and Culture event of its kind in Montgomery County.

ALL ABOUT PRIMERS AND WHAT THEY CAN DO FOR YOUR MAKEUP By Ty’’Lechelle
A
s a makeup artist, I enhance the features of beautiful women everyday. Sometimes, its not the women who could use a boost, but the actual makeup itself needs a little help. This is where primers come into play. There are many types of primers like foundation primers, eyeshadow primers, and primers for mascara. Mascara primers are some of my absolute favorites. For those who's lashes curl in different directions and are hard to tame, a coat of mascara primer just before your normal mascara application can work wonders. Using foundation primers help your makeup to last longer. They can minimize the appearance of pores and makes for a smooth application. Putting a bit of eyeshadow primer across your lids before eye makeup can really help colors appear more vibrant and prevent eyeshadow from creasing. Taking advantage of this industry secret has worked wonders for myself as well as keeping clients happy. These products really take your makeup to the next level when used correctly. A little goes a long way no matter what type of primer you may need.
Quick Tips on making primers work for you:

1. Only apply primers before your makeup application. They are only used to "prime" and prepare your face for makeup. Using them on top can go really wrong. 2.Try matching ingredients for more flawless results. Example, if you're using a silicone based foundation, try finding a silicone based primer. 3. Don't apply makeup right away. Try waiting a few minutes to let the product settle into your skin and stay put.

Wanda Faye: The Time of Singing Has Come By Greta Wheeler

anda Faye is not your typical singer. In fact, she has a style of her own. Known throughout European countries, such as London, England, Turkey, France, and Italy, Wanda Faye is often referred to as unique with a voice that soothes, calms, and even heals. She has already introduced to Europe her music genre, Jazz Opera with a Gospel twist, and plans to soon acquaint the American audience with this style of music as well. Of course, I had to ask this international songbird how she came up with this style of music. She shared that gospel has always been very much a part of her life, and that she comes from a musical family. “I grew up singing gospel. My relatives sang mostly pop and blues and some jazz…I was more into opera. I was the odd ball in my family.” Although she loves gospel music, opera seems to present something different. Wanda Faye began her study of music in elementary school and continued throughout junior high school. She recalls her first experience with opera when her class was afforded the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. There, Wanda Faye had the pleasure of witnessing the performance of Opera singer, Leontyne Price, and was mesmerized. “I remember when I went home back to North Carolina from that trip, I told my mom that I heard a lady sing and she sounded so beautiful, and her name was Leontyne Price.” She remembered the excitement expressed by her mom about the famous opera singer. When her mom asked her what she thought of the opera singer, Wanda Faye shared that while watching Leontyne perform, she felt as if God was speaking to her, revealing to her that she too, could sing opera. As time went by, Wanda Faye never heard anything else about the opera singer until she entered her junior year in high school. “As a matter of fact, I never even thought about her because [by then] I was more into Jazz,” she recollects. While in Virginia, Wanda Faye attended the operatic production of Porgy and Bess and adopted her favorite song, “Summer Time.” “That was when I knew that was what I wanted to do.” Wanda says with such delight. While living overseas, the songstress performed at scores of venues. Because gospel was prohibited in most of the areas, she enjoyed singing opera as well as some of the jazz songs that she’d learned. Wanda Faye admits that she was not well acquainted with singing jazz in the conventional style as most jazz singers, so she added opera into the mix and it was well received. Eventually, she began singing in other languages such as Italian, German, Spanish, Latin, and French, but shares how she desired to sing opera in English due to lack of understanding of the language, it discouraged the interest of many of

the people. “I wanted [people] to enjoy opera and understand that many of the opera songs are about God, love and life.” Although Wanda Faye enjoyed singing and performing live, she never considered making a CD, but felt that it was inevitable after being approached by London music promoter and owner of We Do All, J. Adeyemi. The London music promoter offered her a one million pound contract, which translates to $2 million in U.S. currency. She was also asked to be part of a show that included recording artists, Jay Z and Beyonce, but out of respect for her husband, who was not in support of it, she respectfully and regretfully declined. Today, the vocal treasure is in preparation to re-emerge and accomplish what she knows in her heart God has called her to do, which is to use her gift of singing to minister to people across the globe. She’s soon to head back into the recording studio and is also preparing for musical theatrical roles. There is so much more to the international Jazz Opera with a Gospel Twist singer – so much that she is sharing it all in her upcoming book, which she tentatively plans to have published by the end of 2016. Wanda Faye is in agreement with God that the time of singing has come.

rinetta Love was born and raised in the Big Apple - New York City (NYC) Manhattan. As a young child she grew up with a mother and father, three brothers and one sister. However, after the demise of her parent’s marriage, she was then under the influence of a matriarchal household setting, where her grandmother and mother set the standards for raising her siblings. In her youthful years, Trinetta recalls how she was intrigued and inspired by the wealth of knowledge she gained from her grandmother. She expresses how grateful she was for having a mother who instilled within her brothers and sisters the importance of having morals, values and principles; those were the key components of living a healthy lifestyle according to Trinetta. At a young age, Trinetta’s family encountered a major financial setback. She vividly remembers the moment when her family lifestyle changed from riches to rags, from sleeping in canopy beds to living on the floor; from Catholic schools in Queens, New York to public schools in Florida. Moreover, those setbacks did not destroy the family’s foundation which was built on love and a strong faith in God. Trinetta did not choose singing, she says singing chose her. It wasn’t until 8th grade that she realized through a friend that she could sing. Singing wasn’t Trinetta’s first love; her passion for playing softball was her focus. She automatically assumed her career would consist of eventually becoming a professional softball player. Trinetta then ventured into a new found hobby - dancing. The art of dance spoke to her creative ability which led her to try outs. She was eventually accepted to be a part of the Bethune Cookman University dance team, and later recruited to dance with Morris Brown Bubbling Brown Sugar. At this point, Trinetta realized she was gifted in both singing and dancing, giving her the ability to pursue both interests simultaneously. TRINETTA LOVE is a singer/songwriter, actress, and all around entertainer who loves music, the mic, and the stage! She’s performed in and around the New York tri-state area, including the world famous “Apollo.” And, since moving to Atlanta, she’s performed at the Georgia World Congress Center, the Atlantis Music Conference,

“Music is not what I do, it’s who I am.” A plethora of songs come to her in the midst of her dreams or while she is meditating on a specific topic. Trinetta is a loving free spirited and humbled individual who is fully aware that her talent is a gift from God. The darkest moment within her journey, has empowered her to live her dreams to the fullest, and propelled her life in ways unimaginable. Trinetta attempted suicide as a teenager. It was a season in her life where she felt alone, suffering from depression. It was a moment that led her to throwing in the towel on life. She felt as if she was sinking in quicksand, along with all her dreams, goals and aspirations; everything she had achieved thus far didn’t prevent her from overdosing on those pills. It was one of the darkest moments she had ever endured. The curtains were closed, but she says, “God had a different plan.” The doctors said if she survived, she would be a vegetable. Once she was released from the hospital, months later, a classmate walked up to her and said ‘I thought you were dead.’ Trinetta shares these words of advice with those who are eager to pursue their dreams, but feel as if they are not good enough or don’t have the resources to pursue them. This was a huge honor because Trinetta “loves” hip-hop, and is grateful to now be a part of hip-hop history. So far, Trinetta has been Executive Producer on 2 CD’s. Her CD “Free Agent” was nominated Indie R&B Album of the Year by the Southern Entertainment Awards (2007). Afterwards, she released her sophomore project entitled "EnFamous.” Fans continued to show love – especially for her hot singles “Searchin” and “Just for You” which salutes women of all ages and races who are holding it down for their families. The music is HOT; the beat is BANGING; the vocals are POWERFUL; and, the lyrics are LIFE! Also, in 2013 she released a “hot dance single” called “Pack Your Bags” (www.youtube.com/iAmTrinetta ). In September 2014, Trinetta released her latest & most “powerful” song yet called “SOLDIER 4 LIFE!” (c)2014. SOLDIER 4 LIFE is a song with a message! It's RAW, REAL & RELEVANT, and is available on i-Tunes. I asked Trinetta in the midst of our interview: The decisions we make are detrimental to our success, what were some of the decisions you made that caused hardship, yet as a result of making that decision, led you to a discovery of defining you? Trinetta’s response was that she “didn’t listen to her attorney in regards to her career.” He advised her not every deal is a good deal in the music industry. It was a lesson learned that would greatly impact her life. “Business is never personal; your talent is your power and you have leverage.” Trinetta’s mantra is, “it ain’t a game, it’s my life.” ™ More than a pretty face, she is wise beyond her years.

hen the first notes exited the mouth of this lady, she had my attention! She is Ozara Odé! Her voice will reach down into your very soul and stir every fiber of your being! She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After relocating to the Atlanta area twice, in 2014, she decided to make it her permanent home. Ozara’s first solo was at 8 years old, and like many others, it all started at church. When she was young, she felt very intimidated about singing in front of people because she didn’t sound like the other young ladies. She was singing contralto even then! Ozara says, “I didn’t necessarily think anything was wrong with my voice. I just wasn’t sure how other people would receive it, so I sung mostly background. I preferred to blend in with the male tenor section (chuckling). When I got older, I did my rendition of “Summertime,” and was told that the song was “likened” to a Nina Simone piece. I took the compliments graciously not knowing who Nina Simone was.” Ozara reveals that a friend told her that she must not have known who Nina was because of the way she calmly responded to the compliments. He took her to Barnes & Noble bookstore to the listening room and put a headset on her. As soon as Ozara heard Nina Simone’s voice she was captivated and fell immediately in love! She was so overwhelmed with joy that a tear dropped from her eye!! She says excitement overtook her and she wanted to meet this gifted woman who shared a kindred voice. She wanted to talk to her, but her bubble was soon burst when her friend told her that Ms. Simone had transitioned 3 years earlier. Nina Simone’s estate was informed that Ozara had written a play paying homage to Ms. Simone titled Ozara Odé as Nina: A Tribute to the High Priestess of Soul. The estate then invited her to the Atlanta read of the play during the Nina Simone Tribute in 2010. She excitedly accepted!! After the reading, she performed two Nina Simone songs. they finished singing, Simone renamed Ozara Odé, “Peaches,” and stated that her mom’s spirit had lived in various people at various times, and she was now living in Ozara as Peaches!! “Brown Baby” and “Four Women” are two of Ozara’s favorite Nina songs! Her favorites to perform are “Brown Baby,” “Feeling Good,” and “Sea Lion Woman” because these songs get the audience involved. She loves the participation and being able to connect with the audience is very important to her. Ozara says, “I’m very honored to do the Nina Simone tribute. It is my desire to continue to spread her music and to keep beautiful soul music alive.” Ozara has many ways of expressing herself creatively. To her credit, she has performed at the Jazz Café in London and at Bizz`Art in Paris. She won first place twice in the Sankofa Soul contest, also in Paris. She is also a songwriter, playwright and a poet! Added to her credits are an album titled I Dream, and a single, “Long Road,” which was the title track for the documentary film Long Road to the Hall of Fame presented at the 2015 Pan African Film Festival. Ozara is a very talented woman who doesn’t take her gift lightly. She says, “I like being able to put words out into the atmosphere that uplift and inspire us to love each other and ourselves, to show that we can love and continue to love and push out evil, which is overridden by love every time.” Her depth as an artist is heard in every note. traight outta Bronx, New York, Sean Hunter, of both Jamaican and American descent, is on the fast track to set the world of Hip Hop on fire once again. At a time where we really could use the passion and heart felt lyrics and performances that our old school Hip Hop brought us not so long ago, this young brother is a breath of fresh air while still keeping it current. At the tender age of 9, Sean professed that he was going to be a rapper, but it almost didn't happen as the streets got to him first. He ended up behind bars on not 1 but 2 separate occasions for illegal drug distribution which the latter almost cost him years of his life. After being given a second chance, thanks to the sacrifice of his family, Sean decided it was time to focus on what had been in his heart all along.....THE MUSIC. After his last stint behind bars Sean was quickly discovered and IMMEDIATELY signed to the TFD Label (Taylor Family Dynasty) by CEO HK. Sean's freshman and sophomore albums gave him a name on the streets of New York but after landing a new deal with a TFD/Caroline/Capitol Music Group Partnership, he is destined to become internationally known with his upcoming EP, "Superstar Potential 2." The first single off the EP scheduled to be released in May entitled "Ain't That Right" is already making noise on your favorite Hip Hop stations. You will soon find out that Sean's music is raw, honest, and always real. He lays it on the line, no-holds-barred: "I don't go for the trendy commercial approach. What I do is basic Hip Hop soul music - no gimmicks added." Features on the EP include Fred Da Godson, Sance, Michelob and Choppa Zoe from the hit show Money and Violence. Sean considers his music works of art that are a testament to an old school ethos of hip-hop: the synergy between producer and artists distilled into many hours worth of game (knowledge). While Sean Hunter's music has been influenced by Jay-Z, Michael Jackson, Biggie Smalls, Tupac and KRS-1, his unique style and finesse is sure to make him the next dominating force in the rap game, so stay tuned.

Key West is not only the final stop in your journey down the Keys, it is the southernmost point in the continental United States. In Key West, you can visit the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum. The Ripley’s franchise operates museums worldwide specializing in unusual facts, customs and people. You will meet an 8-foot-11-inch man, see a coin-covered car, and brave your way through a vortex tunnel. If you get hungry afterwards, Key West is the place to pick up some key lime pie and conch….anything! If you want conch fritters, conch salad or conch chowder, just name it and they’ve got it. Conch – both the meat and the shell – is practically the official symbol of the Florida Keys. Keys residents have nicknamed the region the “Conch Republic” and themselves as “Conchs.” Many Key West residents are descendants of Bahamian immigrants. The neighborhood of Bahama Village is named for the original Bahamian community. Today, it is a tourist attraction with shops, restaurants and the Lofton B. Sands AfricanBahamian Museum. This museum chronicles Key West’s black community past and present with pictures, arts and crafts, and other memorabilia. Whichever point you start at, you can unlock a fantastic vacation in the Florida Keys. ■
