Shooting the fastwater falls with Mackfest kayakers
18-year-old Jack Carrol from Guelph throws up a ‘round claw’ hand gesture common among kayakers, which means that he’s about to do something ‘totally awesome.’ “It’s a round claw,” said Carrol. “You know, it’s like kayaker slang. It means, ‘I’m about to do something really really cool!,” said Carrol. Photo by Melyssa Gloude
By Melyssa Gloude and Margriet Kitchen Centre Hastings - The anticipated thaw of spring had kayakers from all over Ontario taking to Centre Hastings’ swelling, racing rivers this past weekend. This year’s Mackfest (“Marmora and Area Kayak and Canoe Festival”) event was rescheduled at the last minute to ensure a good run with the early high water, and attracted more than 100 paddlers to various different (and dicey) area routes: the Salmon, the Black, and Skootamatta Rivers, as well as Beaver Creek north of Marmora. Beaver Creek offered some seriously fast water -- the usual rapids and hazards where most paddlers rode the entire route, with some choosing to exit at the Beaver Creek Bridge. Mackfest co-ordinator Manny Lawson expressed her appreciation to the community of Marmora and area for their hospitality and friendship for the visiting kayakers. “Bunkers/Iron Grille in Marmora have been our base camp for the past couple of years, and even with the very short notice of the date this year, [they] were happy to accommodate our event,” she said. Lawson said this year’s Mackfest had a great turnout, despite the quick date change. “There were between 75 and 100 kayakers registered for the Mackfest,” said Lawson. “A good number more than last year, especially considering the last minute decision to hold it March 19 and 20 instead of the usual April dates. The water actually was at it’s peak on Friday, but was still excellent for the Saturday event.” Continued on page 3
