Campbellford teens adopt seniors and make their Christmas special BY JOHN CAMPBELL

Campbellford – The spirit of Christmas was on full display when two generations came together at Burnbrae Gardens, with one giving gifts and the other receiving them, to the delight of both. What brought them together was a program at Campbellford District High School called Adopt A Senior. The school contacted the longterm care facility to find out how many of its 43 residents had no family and would not be receiving any gifts this Christmas, said student council adviser Crista Hunt. Fourteen were adopted by more than 70 students, who were provided photos of the residents and “a wish list of things they would like,” she said. “They were spoiled, you could say. (The students) went all out ... Everyone had almost 10 gifts.” Socks were “a big request” among the clothing items on the list, and “a lot of them wanted some sweets, some treats,” Hunt said. The students raised the money themselves for the purchase of gifts and Ames Coach Lines donated the bus that took them to Burnbrae. “The kids are so excited to do this,” she said. More than 70 students took part in the Adopt A Senior program, and half of them delivered the gifts in person at Burnbrae Gardens Dec. 21. John Campbell/Metroland

was started three years ago. “It brings me to tears how local kids can get together and do this ... make Christmas so special for our residents,” said Burnbrae’s

director of care Lesley Maguire. For residents without family or “It’s absolutely fabulous – the have members who don’t visit ofsmiles and the laughs and the re- ten, “it’s like magic” to be shown actions. It’s truly what Christmas so much attention, she said. is all about.” It “really is a total surprise” for

the seniors, “and they talk about it for days and days and weeks.” Maguire told the students she was “totally overwhelmed” by what they had done. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I think you can tell by the looks on the residents’ faces how much of a difference you’ve made.” Among those receiving gifts was Madeline McCarthy, Burnbrae’s oldest resident at age 104 and a graduate of the original Campbellford high school in 1929. Asked for their thoughts in separate interviews, high school student Beatrice Muldoon and 93-year-old resident Jessie Parcels offered the same response: “It’s wonderful.” “It’s really nice to see the reaction that we get,” Muldoon added. “I’m so happy,” Parcels said. McKayla Hart’s Grade 12 class adopted Elaine Eastman because they “thought it was just such a great thing to do. Especially being our last year in high school we wanted to do something to make a difference in the community, and this was one way, that it made someone’s Christmas a lot better.” Hart’s classmate, Taylor Peterson, said she had “a lot of fun doing this” for the resident they had adopted. “It means a lot to her, it means a lot to me.”
