Farming calendar has a Trent Hills connection By John Campbell

Trent Hills – A couple in Trent Hills are among the farmers featured in the 2016 Faces of Farming calendar. Ian and Sara Laver, who are profiled for the month of April, grow corn, soybeans and wheat on 170 acres, and this year they added an egg barn. It currently houses 6,500 laying hens but has the capacity to hold up to 14,000 birds. It’s Ian’s first flock but he grew up around chickens; his family has produced eggs for three of the four generations the Lavers have been farming. He works with his father Dennis who raises laying hens as well as grows crops on about 300 acres of crop land. The calendar is “to raise awareness and to introduce Ontario consumers to the people who put food on their tables,” said Kelly Daynard, communications manager with Farm & Food Care Ontario, the organization behind the calendar. There’s still a perception that needs breaking, that “farmers are your stereotypical old MacDonald types,” she said. “Through the calendar we want to show they are innovative, they’re active in their community, they’re super-proud of what they do, they’re often multi-generational families working in the same business, and they are really committed to putting great food on our tables.” Ian and Sara, who looks after their farm’s bookkeeping, met while he was working toward a diploma in agriculture from the Ontario Agricultural College

and she was pursuing a degree in environmental science. They married after Sara obtained her Master’s degree from the University of Toronto. Sara works off the farm as an environ-

mental officer with the province and is Ian, 31, who was “surprised” to be currently on maternity leave. asked to be included in the 11th edition The couple have three children – Ja- of the Faces of Farming calendar, said cob, 4, Amelia, 2, and Ethan, who was “the egg industry is taking off.” born in September. New studies have shown eggs are

“very healthy for you,” and are a cheap source of protein and nutrients. “It’s a good time to be an egg farmer,” Ian said. Until this month the president of the Northumberland Soil and Crop Improvement, he remains very involved as a director with the Campbellford and District Curling and Racquet Club. Sara is an avid runner who also enjoys taking the couple’s children to swimming lessons, soccer games and other sporting events. Daynard said the calendar’s sponsors are asked to submit names of farmers from different parts of the province and different age groups. The Lavers were recommended by Burnbrae Farms. “Farmers are such wonderful people but they are not used to being in the limelight,” she said, so it takes some persuading to get them to take part. Four one-day photo shoots were done across the province. The one with the Lavers took place in August at a farm in the Durham Region. The coalition of farmers and associated businesses had 8,000 calendars printed; 4,500 were mailed out as Christmas presents to politicians, grocery stores, butcher shops and media. The calendars can also be purchased for $10 by visiting <www.farmfoodcare.org> or calling 1-519-837-1326. Farm & Food Care’s mandate is to “answer the public’s questions about food and farming [and] connect farm gates to dinner plates,” Maynard said.
