160th anniversary of the Campbellford Fair celebrates the rural way of life By Sue Dickens
News – Campbellford – Celebrating the rural way of life, the CampbellfordSeymour Agricultural Society held its 160th fair with past fair queens and fair ambassadors as special guests at the opening night ceremonies. “Over the years, we have featured individuals instrumental in the work of the Society; this year we invited our past fair queens and fair ambassadors to join us,” said Cathy Redden, vice president of the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies. She was speaking to the crowd that gathered Friday night to mark the beginning of the three-day “Hats off to 160 years” celebration. June Rutherford, who was fair queen in 1974, was among those who took to the stage and talked about her experiences with the fair. “The one thing that came out of it all was the volunteering which I am doing here today,” she commented, noting with humour, “they didn’t let me keep the crown. . . I had to pass it on.” “I think what we’ve learned the benefit of the program is to encourage our youth to get involved,” said Redden. “If you want to get volunteers for your fair then grow your own . . . I think Ingholm Farms, right, won 1st place in the heavy horse hitch competition troika class (a troika is a team hitched in a single row of three) at the Campbellford Fair. Jim Whittaker is the driver of the team of we’ve done that very well,” she added. Hackney-Clydesdales owned by Harold Ingram and family of Campbellford. Second place was won by Bob Bolton’s team from Millbrook, left. Photo: Sue Dickens
