News – Warkworth - Those words are written on a tag attached to bags of reindeer food being sold to students at Percy Centennial School to raise money for World Vision. It’s a project inspired by nine-year-old Kamryn Woods, a Grade 4 student. “Last year we sold bunny food at Easter so this is the first year doing reindeer food,” she said as if making and marketing these were an everyday occurrence. Last year she focused on raising money for Sleeping Children Around the World, an organization whose donations provide bed kits to children typically located in underdeveloped and developing countries. “Last year we made $335 and our goal was $35,” said Kamryn. Holding up a bag of reindeer food she said with a very serious face, “Well it’s actually quite simple to make. It’s expensive but it’s simple. . . so you just take oats and dump them in a bowl and add glitter then mix it and put it in bags.” Kamryn chose World Vision because of a book her grandparents showed her recently. “My grandparents said instead of doing Sleeping Children again you could do another foundation. They said we have a book I think you will like so I opened the book and said you know what, we’re doing this.” The book she was looking at was a World Vision catalogue. “I opened to this page and there was a calendar and a different gift each month for a different child,” she explained as her face lit up with Selling reindeer food they created in small handmade bags to raise money for World Vision is an idea inspired by Grade 4 student Kamryn Woods, right, excitement. “It’s like a Sears catalogue but you give gifts to of Percy Centennial Public School. This is the second year she has inspired a fundraising effort at the school at Christmas time. Last year they sold bunny people. Smitty’s team spreads good cheer across township R0011998787
By Bill Freeman
Havelock-Belmont-Methuen – It was a night for beaming smiles as the Smitty’s Wish team guided Santa Claus around the township bringing festive cheer and toys to over 100 local children. The Thursday and Friday distribution evenings marked the culmination of a busy week for the tireless Smitty’s Wish crew who had earlier
delivered packages to 118 area seniors and packed and delivered 40 food hampers. “The need is there,” says a grateful Norma Smith, whose late husband Bob was the original Smitty Claus delivering toys and gifts to local families from the back of an all-terrain vehicle for over 20 years. When he passed away 12 years ago, his friends were determined to carry on his

legacy and the Smitty’s Wish campaign was born. His wife has seen the impact the program has had on countless occasions. “(We see) the parents who think there won’t be a Christmas because of the little straits they are going through but we make it possible,” Smith said, adding that the elves probably wrapped at least 500 pres-
ents. “I am just amazed at the generosity of the people who donate toys and other gifts and money. We also see the generosity of the people who receive. Food was a big issue this year and there were all kinds of hugs, kisses and crying.” “We always have glitches but it always Please see “Smitty” on page 3

Norwood Lions salute toy drive supporters
By Bill Freeman
News - Asphodel-Norwood – There is nothing Grinch-like about the Norwood Lions Christmas toy drive supporters. Once again, local residents, businesses, schools and Norwood Vipers hockey fans stepped up and brought some festive cheer to children in need. “The gifts were great this year,” says Rick Bailey, chair of the Lions toy drive committee. “We try to get a couple of
“Most of the gifts are for younger gifts for every child, this year we were against the Brantford Blast. Stewart Motors, the RBC branch, Mapleview Retirement Centre and the Bowes & Cocks real estate office. At least 120 stuffed animals were collected during the Norwood Vipers Allan Cup Hockey game

to buy gifts for older kids,” Bailey said. The number of households receiving hampers was down in 2013 but the number of children remained the same as last year, Lion Tom Deen said. “The Lions Club and the foodbank work closely together as far as distribution is concerned,” Bailey said. The club also gives the foodbank a donation towards its Christmas hamper program. “At one time we did a lot around food collection,” said Bailey. “Now our focus is on toys and children.” Bailey says he is humbled by the response from the community. He mentioned Norwood resident Hazel Wrightly who spent hours knitting children’s mittens and toques which were given to the drive. “Norwood has always responded very well to anything the Lions do, they open their wallets,” he said. Bailey was a committee member last year and received a lot of support from club members while he helmed the toy drive. “Any function I’ve been involved with the Lions the help of the members Norwood Lions Club members Vern Stockdale, Rick Bailey, Peter Oord and Tom Deen stand by some of has always been excellent; there’s althe toy hampers that were distributed to local families last week. News - Havelock-Belmont-Methuen – Havelock-Belmont-Methuen and other rural municipalities with Ontario Provincial Police service contracts are bracing for potentially staggering cost hikes in 2015 in the wake of increases they’ll be hit with in 2014. The OPP is proposing a new province-wide per household billing model for municipalities which has raised alarm bells. “Policing is a very, very serious situation,” HBM mayor Ron Gerow said during a budget discussion with representatives of the Havelock Belmont Methuen Lakes Association. “There are some very serious issues when it comes to major increases in policing.” The complicated model proposed by the OPP and the provincial government contains two components, said Gerow, one is a per household charge which he doesn’t agree with and the other is a user charge for calls for service “which is the actual calls to the community for service by the OPP.” “We could be looking at as high as an 80 per cent increase,” he said. The proposed billing model has generated a stinging resolution from the Township of Seguin which is forecasting a 197 per cent increase and a 92 per cent jump for West Parry Sound. Seguin Township says the new “methodology” would charge each
municipality a flat $260 per household fee for base costs related to policing services plus a “variable charge” for each call for service in the municipality. The OPP says 73 per cent of its costs are fixed and 27 per cent are variable. “The rationale for this is that there is a base fixed cost for providing police services that must be borne by all participating municipalities regardless of the number of calls for service the OPP responds to in each municipality,” the Seguin resolution state. “The actual specifics of the cost for the calls for service have not been released or calculated (but) the OPP has estimated that the average cost per household in Ontario for policing services, including the base cost and the calls for service, would be approximately $369.” HBM agrees with Seguin Township that the model is “fundamentally flawed, unfair and inequitable” and is demanding that Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne prevent “this type of unfair treatment towards rural Ontario and (that) this funding model be scrapped immediately.” “It’s a very good example of what is out there and what communities are facing when it comes to policing,” says Gerow. “We’re looking at major issues coming forward in 2015,” he said. “Our police services board and council are
Watch for our Holiday 2013 Clearout Event!!!
very concerned about this. It’s province-wide; it’s going to be a huge topic of discussion. No doubt it will have a major effect on things in 2015.” Municipalities already face an increase in 2014; HBM will need to raise $41,855 more through its 2014 municipal levy than it did last year to meet an expected policing bill of just over $901,000. Currently, the per household cost for policing in HBM is $197. “Councils are responsible for the contract the PSB is responsible for the service (but) we have no voice at the table when it comes to discussions about salaries and wages,” says Gerow. Municipalities are “fighting” the new “model” through organizations like the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, he added. Peter White of the HBMLA said his group would support the township’s lobbying efforts as would the Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations.

News – Trent Hills – Charlotte Francis won’t have to worry about Santa not showing up at her home in Wooler on Christmas Eve. She made it on his Nice list by donating presents she received at her birthday party Nov. 1 to this year’s toy drive by the Trent Hills Fire Department and Community Living Campbellford/Brighton. She already has toys “and I don’t need that many,” Charlotte said last week at the Campbellford fire hall, where an upstairs room was filled with clothes, toys, games and other neat stuff. Minutes later a half-dozen teachers from St. Mary’s, Hillcrest and Kent elementary schools began filling bags and boxes to take back to their schools to distribute among families with limited resources. Charlotte’s generosity was inspired by a Grade 3 classmate at Murray Centennial Public School who asked guests to his birthday party in the summer to give donations to a program that enables children to play sports who wouldn’t have an opportunity otherwise. “We talked why that was a cool idea, (and) what she could do for her birthday,” Charlotte’s mom, Jessica, said. “She came up with the idea of collecting toys for a toy drive for kids who don’t get toys at Christmas.” About a dozen children attended the party and “they were very generous,” she said, bringing more than one gift, “and we put in some extra stuff, too.” The toy drive in Campbellford was chosen to receive the donations because Jessica went to school in town and her mother and sister still live in Trent Hills.
“Kids need to realize locally what they can do locally ... to support their own communities,” she said. “It’s good to develop compassion.” Ryan Francis said his eight-year-old daughter’s generosity “means a lot to us, she’s thinking of other people.” She has “a big heart,” her mother said. “We’re proud of her.” The Lang family – Bev and Bob Lang, their daughter Shari, Trent Hills deputy clerk/manager of protective services, and her husband, Greg Farrant – also have a big heart, as they donated $500 worth of toys and another $250 in clothes. “I love doing it,” Bob Lang said of the family’s support of the toy drive, now for the third year. There’s no better way to spend Christmas, Bev Lang said. “It’s nice to make kids happy, and Christmas is for kids, they should enjoy it. Nobody should do without, and we can help, so we help. We don’t need anything.” The donations were greatly appreciated by Fire Chief Tim Blake, who noted the amount of goods collected this season was “down a little bit (but) everything’s going to be fine.” The children won’t be disappointed, thanks in large part to a fundraiser organized by John McEvoy and Murray Kirkland for motorcycle owners, he said. Each school in Campbellford will be given $200 as well, and this year, for the first time, $150 will be donated to each public school in Warkworth and Hastings, said Blake, who hopes to get them and their communities involved in the toy drive next year. “It’s a great community event,” he said.
All County Landfill and Transfer Staons will be closed at noon on Dec. 24th and Dec. 31st and closed all day on Christmas Day Dec. 25th, Boxing Day, Dec. 26th and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1st. 2014

Hillcrest students dress up for author’s day Lifestyles – Campbellford - Celebrating Canadian authors, the Grades 5 and 6 students at Hillcrest Public School dressed up in costume as their favourite character in a book they chose for the event. Kindergarten pupils came to the author’s fair to speak to the characters. It was also open to parents and grandparents. “Everybody read a book and researched an author. The goal was they pick a Canadian author that would challenge them at their reading level,” said their teacher Patrick Muldoon. He teaches the English part of the Extended French program instructing them in
English, math and science for half the school day and the other half of the day they are in French classes. “In the Ontario curriculum we talk about learning about different authors and the way that novels are organized so the students here did a novel’s study to talk about the plot and the characters and the setting,” he explained. “They had 30 different activities they could choose from to differentiate learning so they could use their own learning styles to their advantage.” There were art and music activities, video making and more. “They had the choice to work on these elective activities to explore their book

and they built models and had songs and movie trailers about their book.” The budding bookworms took to the authors’ fair with enthusiasm. Jamie Sheridan chose the book “Frost”. Dressed in hockey gear she played the part of Johnny Van Der Zee, a talented hockey player who seems to have everything going for him in the town of Iqaluit, Nunavut. But something is wrong. “Frost wants Johnny to play hockey all the time so he can get famous, but Johnny doesn’t want to play hockey all the time so he just quits hockey and Frost gets mad at him,” said Jamie, who enjoys reading books like this. “Author’s day is a good idea,” she said. “A lot of schools have science fairs but it’s kind of like a science fair but for books.” Student Tessa Petherick chose the book “The Time Time Stopped,” by Don Gillmor.

“It’s an adventure slash mystery book,” she said with a grin. Tessa played the role of the main character Tristan who doesn’t like time “because he never has enough of it.” There’s plenty of twists and turns to the novel, including a bully in the storyline, and a timekeeper. “I think the author’s fair is a very good idea because people in our school and kids in class can come in and learn all about our authors,” said Tessa. Monique Boivin chose to dress up as Cary, the main character’s mom in the book Convicts by Iain Lawrence. “She tries to save her son,” said Tessa, without giving too much of the plot away. She thought author’s fair was a good idea. “I think today is kinda cool cause we can dress up as our own characters,” she said. This is the first time that an author’s fair was held at the school.

Nelson Mandela: Peace at last Editorial - The Catholic Church consecrates saints with less pomp and sentimentality than was lavished on Nelson Mandela during the week-long media orgy that we have just been through. We haven’t seen such a ridiculous spectacle since...oh, since the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy three weeks ago. But at least the Kennedy orgy was over a lot faster – and nobody compared him to Gandhi or Christ. Pity the poor journalists who had to grind out endless stories about what was hardly a news event at all – 95-year-old man dies after lengthy illness – and inevitably endGwynne Dyer ed up sounding like sycophants and fools. True, the world needed (or at least wanted) a political icon of perfect virtue, but the beatification of Nelson Mandela took much too long. The problem was that everybody in the media knew well in advance that Mandela was dying, and had time to invest millions in preparing to “cover” the event. Hotel rooms and telecom facilities were booked, crews and anchors were deployed, and the expense had to be justified by round-the-clock, wall-to-wall coverage of funeral orations, vox pop interviews, and talking heads. And of course all the world’s politicians showed up for the greatest photo op of the decade, including many who had condemned Mandela as a terrorist before he pulled off a peaceful transition from apartheid to majority rule in South Africa. But now that the babble of rhetoric has died down and just before the myth was takes over completely, let us talk honestly about who he was and what he accomplished. Mandela understood that South Africans needed an icon, not a mere mortal man, as the founding hero of their new democracy, but he had a strong sense of irony. It would have got plenty of exercise as he watched the local politicos and the foreign dignitaries strew metaphorical flowers on his grave. The man whom they buried at Qunu on Sunday was arrested by the white minority regime in 1963, probably on a tip from the US Central Intelligence Agency. He was the head of the African National Congress’s military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), at the time, and continued to back its campaign of sabotage, bombing and attacks on military and police targets throughout his 27 years in prison. If the South African Communist Party is to be be-
lieved, he was a member of its central committee at the time of his arrest. It was a different time, when US President Ronald Reagan could declare that the apartheid regime was “essential to the Free World,” and the ANC’s main international supporters were the Soviet Union and Cuba. Mandela might have ended up as a man of violence if he had not gone to prison. Instead, in prison, he had the time to develop his ideas about reconciliation and persuade the other ANC leaders who were also confined to Robben Island of their value. By the time he came out of prison in 1990, he had become the man that everybody knew they could trust – including the whites. During the next four years, when he and F.W. De Klerk, the last white president, negotiated the transfer of power from the white minority to the black majority, he really was the indispensable man. His commitment to reconciliation was so visible and genuine that whites were willing to do what had once seemed inconceivable: to hand over power before they absolutely had to. If you want to know what South Africa would have looked like if the whites had clung to power down to the last ditch, look at Syria today. But it was not only Mandela who saved the country from that fate: they gave the Nobel Peace Prize to both Mandela and De Klerk, because the miracle could not have happened if De Klerk had not had the will and the skill to lead his own Afrikaner tribe out of power. Then, after the first free election in 1994, Mandela became the president, and frankly he wasn’t very good at it. He had no executive experience, nor much aptitude for it. Thabo Mbeki did most of the hard administrative work behind the scenes during Mandela’s presidency (1994-1999), while Mandela greeted visiting celebrities, hobnobbed with the rich and famous, and solicited donations for various causes that included, unfortunately, his own extensive family. He was not personally corrupt, but he was involved in a few dubious deals, and he tolerated corruption in others. But he did his country one last big favour: he retired at the end of his first term rather than clinging to power. He was already 81 years old at that time, but lesser men (Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, for instance) have not let that stop them. And he even had a few good years left to enjoy his family before age began to drag him down. He was not a saint; he was just a man. But he was the right man at the right time.
Thank you to all of our advertisers and readers for another great year. Wishing you and yours all the best in 2014

Get ‘er done By Terry Bush
Editorial - Well, get ‘er done week has rolled around for another year. This is the week when we have to do two sets of papers in the same week because of the way the holidays fall. So here I am on Thursday night, shamelessly trying to fill the hole on the editorial page for the paper we’re putting out tomorrow that comes out on December 26. On the 27th we’ll put out the paper that comes out on January 2. Confusing to say the least. But, then again I’ve been confused most of today anyway as my brain still hasn’t recovered from the root canal (and its accompanying nitrous oxide) I had done at the endodondist’s yesterday. This visit to the dentist was irritating in more ways than one because I’d already had a root canal done on the same tooth a few years back. Apparently I have long, curvy roots which isn’t a good thing in a tooth but something I’ve always been fond of when it comes to members of the opposite sex. For someone who’s been told he has very good teeth for as long as I can remember, I seem to be having a lot of trouble these past few years. Some of my problems are admittedly due to the aging process. How else would you explain breaking a tooth on mashed potatoes at a wedding reception? The old molars just aren’t what they used to be but apart from the odd piece falling off around a 40-year-old filling, I’ve been lucky. But for some reason, since I was finally able to buy my way into a family benefit package at work a couple of years back, my teeth seem to have gone to hell... with my benefits maxed out every year. This last root canal apparently didn’t go far enough into the bottom of the root to be totally effective. Too bad because that sucker cost somewhere in the range of $750 as I remember, prebenefits. To fix it has cost $2,300 to date and I still need a permanent filling and crown and my benefits only cover $1,500 worth of dentistry per year. The most troubling part of all this is my soon to be $4,000 tooth is at the back of my mouth where nobody can see it. For four grand, I want that thing in gold, front and centre just a gleaming whenever I flash the ivories. I wanna be Gangsta. My wife on the other hand has one yearly check up, no work done on her teeth and a couple of cleanings per year (nowhere close to the maximum) so I’m now throwing around the idea that bigamy might be a good option to make sure I get my money’s worth. Do you ever wonder if your pets understand a lot more than they let on? It’s Christmas card season and with it comes those annoying Christmas letters. You know the ones where people prattle on about what they and their loved ones did for the year. Sometimes these letters even include visits to your home, just in case you forgot you had company. Mare and I received a couple of letters from the usual suspects and Mare, who never has a bad word to say about anyone, just kind of sighed when she opened the last one and said something to the effect that she thought the letter writer, who shall remain nameless, was just trying to make up for the fact that he doesn’t do a great job keeping in touch the rest of the year. I always find it peculiar that the people who write these letters usually refer to themselves in the third person. “Doug had a very good year this year and was the lead in the community play among other things. He is also enjoying his parttime job driving a school bus.” This makes Terry wonder if perhaps Doug uses a ghost writer each year or has a twin brother also named Doug. Our dog Silly, who came with the misnomer Lily when we got her is usually underfoot and must have overheard us commenting on the photocopied, impersonal missive. We call her Silly because, well, she is. How else would you explain a dog who twirls in circles perfectly synchronized with the spoon you’re using to mix the dog food in her bowl. Anyway, when I got home and opened the door tonight, there was the offending letter shredded into probably a hundred, tiny, little pieces spread across the living room floor. Where she got it, I have no idea but I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed her critique. Hopefully she’s on the mailing list next year as well.

It was a very special night at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School in Norwood when the proverbial curtain was raised on their annual Christmas concert. The wonderful show marked the first musical event in the school’s brand-new and spacious gymnasium, which still drew a standing room only crowd eager to share the evening with students and staff. In past years, St. Paul would not have been able to produce a Christmas concert of any size in its tiny and cramped gym, as concerts had to be staged at Norwood District High School. Not so this year, with primary students kicking off the night with their scene-stealing performances that revolved around the traditions of the Christmas tree. Photo: Bill Freeman

any thought to the absurdity of such a postal name?” The Kuchs note that in the telephone book they’re listed under Nephton. “A mythical but none-theless recognizable location,” they point out. “Why was Nephton not considered for our postal address since it is our phone directory address?” they wondered. “I would like to do a Rick Mercer rant that would publicly expose the stupidity of this decision but would hope that between Canada Post and Havelock-BelmontMethuen Township council this problem can be reexamined and solved.” HBM mayor Ron Gerow and councillor Jim Martin said they spoke to Lenore Kuchs about the issue. “The first time she was very frustrated,” Martin told council. “It was just having a name to a place. Where is HBMTWP?” “The bottom line is that there were meetings held and council was approached with how we move forward with this (Canada Post request),” Mayor Gerow said. “Canada Post rules (stipulate) that we have to choose a name to represent this area. “I think council made the right decision on HBMTWP. It is the proper designation,” he said. “I am not sure what other issues they (the Kuchs) have other than that. They felt there wasn’t a place reflected in the name, but it is a recognized identity.” “The location is Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, HBMTWP is a designation for that mailing address in the same way that you use ON for Ontario. We all use it,” said CAO Linda Reed. “It is still Havelock-Belmont-Methuen

News – Havelock-BelmontMethuen – Terry and Lenore Kuch say their new postal address is worthy of a Rick Mercer rant but will settle for a re-examination by Canada Post and Havelock-BelmontMethuen council. They’re caught up in Canada Post’s changes to rural route addressing for locations served by Peterborough. The addressing is being phased out and will be replaced by full civic or 911 addresses. Canada Post is also dealing with the issue of place names that are composed of 14 or more characters. It has told municipalities that some databases for large volume mailers will not be able to handle municipal addresses that contain 14 characters or more. Havelock-BelmontMethuen has 22 characters and has been truncated to HBMTWP for the purposes of mail addressing. The short-form designation HBMTWP was the target of the Kuch’s displeasure and scorn. “When a person asks ‘where are you from?’ or ‘what is your address?’ the answer one would expect is the name of the location that, if not recognizable, can at least be pronounced,” they write in a letter to council. “So how would someone pronounce, let alone locate, this new address assigned us by Canada Post after apparently it being approved by the township in which we live?” The Kuchs called this change of name “very upsetting.” “I do not know how many people are affected by this change in address, probably very few, but I do know that we’re angry. Salvation Army community lunches thrive
By Bill Freeman
News – Hastings – The Salvation Army’s community lunches in Hastings are thriving thanks to volunteers and a willing and welcoming Civic Centre. “People seem to love it, they get together and have a chat and we’ve got wonderful volunteers,” says Janey Leach, a family support worker with the Salvation Army’s Campbellford office. The Salvation Army has been hosting community lunches in Campbellford for the past 19 years and the Hastings foray marks its first attempt at branching out, says Leach. Organizers were- gratified by the reception, Leach said as volunteers prepared a special Christmas buffet. The free lunches, now into their third month, are held the second and fourth Fridays of the month and include sandwiches, soup, dessert and refreshments. “They’re for anyone who’d like to come in for fellowship, friendship; somewhere to go and get together and have lunch,” says Leach. The diners represent all ages and Leach is particularly delighted that children from the Ontario Early Years Centre upstairs drop in and enjoy the food and company. In Campbellford, the dinners are held every Friday at the Free Methodist Church. Leach says she was talking to Brenda Kock of the Hastings Foodbank about the Campbellford lunches. “She felt there would be a need so we said we’d try it.” They had six the first week and 30 the next two and now average between 36 and 38 guests. “It’s wonderful,” Leach said. “Obviously there’s a need for it.
It’s great because we get children down from the Early Years and we get seniors.” The Salvation Army sponsors the food with assistance from the Food 4 All warehouse in Cobourg. Leach says the Civic Centre is a “beautiful facility” which is given to them free of charge. The luncheons fit in nicely with the Salvation Army’s philosophy, she adds. “That’s what it’s about.” Funds raised through the annual Christmas Kettle and Appeal campaigns make the community lunches possible, Leach said. “This keeps it running all year round and the (Campbellford) office.” She said. The Campbellford office is open two days a week and Leach is the contact for Hastings residents as well as those in Campbellford and area. This year’s kettle campaign is doing very well, she says, as it did last year thanks to the generosity of local residents. “Campbellford and Hastings are amazing communities.” Anyone interested in finding out more about the Salvation Army and its local programs can contact Leach at the Campbellford office at 705-653-4185. This year’s Kettle Campaign is the Salvation Army’s 123rd and through its more than 2,000 locations hopes to raise $21 million. You can also support the campaign online at FilltheKettle.com. The Salvation Army has also teamed up with The Running Room to host the 5K Santa Shuffle and 1 K Elf Walk in 39 cities across Canada. Last year, the Salvation Army helped 1.8 million Canadians in need. The next Hastings lunch is Dec. 27.

NDHS production of Anne of Green Gables rounding into form
Hugh Nielson (Matthew) and Brittany Stewart (Anne) rehearse their parts in the Norwood District High musical production of Anne of Green Gables. Photo: Bill Freeman By Bill Freeman
Entertainment – Norwood – Norwood District High students performing in their production of Anne of Green Gables will have time during the holiday break to immerse themselves even more deeply in the world of Anne Shirley and Avonlea. Lucy Maude Montgomery’s iconic Anne is one of the most beloved characters in fiction and has been given an even wider audience through television and theatre and it was only appropriate that NDHS selected Anne of Green Gables
as their first big stage production as the school eases its way back into ensemble performances. “It’s going really well,” director Tracey Irwin said following a rehearsal just before Christmas holidays. “We’ll break for the holiday and then go full tilt once we get back.” Production crews are starting to build sets and paint has been purchased for backdrops. Costumes are in the works. “There’s lots to do but we’re on schedule,” says Irwin, guidance secretary at the school, who was at the piano for the rehearsal with teachers Todd Murray and Aaron Stinchcombe helping out. “We need a lot of work on the music which we did last Thursday,” she said. “They are very committed,” she says of the large cast, although they have had some challenges because there are so many other extra-curricular activities going on at the school right now. “It will be nice once things slow down a little bit to get the whole cast here every night.” One of the delightful things about the NDHS production is that they’ve invited elementary students to join in and Irwin says they’ve fit in perfectly and have already made their mark “not only as actors but as members of the school. “They’re having a lot of fun, it’s just like they go to school here. It’s nice to know they’ll fit in here when they come to NDHS; they’ve already made friends.” Even though Anne was a staple of
primetime Canadian television for years and the central character in eight of Montgomery’s novels, Irwin says people would be astonished by the number of young people who know nothing about Anne. “You’d be surprised at how many have never seen it or heard of it before,” she said. “We had one night where we watched the movie and that helped a lot; the students got to learn about their characters and that really helped.”
She says grade 11 and 12 students know more about Anne because history teacher Norm Vandenberg talks about her in one of his Canadian history courses. So Irwin is pleased that they are going to give the community a night to remember featuring one of Canada’s fictional sweethearts while also filling the knowledge gap in some of the students at the school. “Everybody needs to see Anne of Green Gables.” The play will run April 10-12.

Businessman’s donation to music program benefits students
Lifestyles – Campbellford – The altruistic decision by a local businessman to donate to the music program at Campbellford District High School (CDHS), “no strings attached,” has made a big difference in the lives of students year after year. That businessman is Scott Drummond, owner of Scott Drummond Motors in Campbellford. His philanthropy began a decade ago and hasn’t stopped. To date he has given a total of $50,000 to the music program. “What strikes me the most is I really believe it is very selfless. It is truly giving. Scott wants these kids to have this wonderful experience. He’s not concerned about what comes back,” said Dave Noble, music educator.
“Music programs are very expensive and the kind of program we run is very contemporary so there’s constantly things you need to add or fine tune or fix. We were finding it was difficult within the school budget to make that happen,” Noble added. That’s when he and Rob Harley, a musician and a parent, “who was heavily involved in the high school’s music program” decided to knock on doors of businesses in town to see if they could drum up donations. “Harley’s the kind of guy who is always trying to make life better for everybody,” said Noble. The first door they knocked on was Scott Drummond’s car dealership and that’s where the buck stopped. “I’m a band kid, played the saxo-
phone. I was in a band through high school in Smiths Falls and in college,” said Drummond. “Band was important to me and I think it made a difference in a lot of kids’ lives. Obviously this program at CDHS makes a big difference in a lot of student’s lives. It’s a great program to get behind,” he added. The CDHS Junior and Senior Jazz Bands consistently bring home the gold year after year from regional and national competitions. “I have even had some kids and parents come into the dealership and that’s wonderful. They want to talk about how their kids have done in the music program.” Grade 11 music student Bethany Spiers who plays trombone said, “Two years ago we went to New Orleans and I couldn’t pay for it so between our fundraising and what
Scott donated I could go. I loved it. It was amazing. It was such a good trip.” Beatrice Muldoon, a Grade 9 student and newcomer to the music program, plays trombone too. “It’s probably one of my favourite things about school that every day I get to come in here and do what makes me happy,” she said. Another newcomer to the CDHS
band is Elizabeth Semlitch, a Grade 9 student who has been playing the piano for eight years. “At the start of the year when Mr. Noble introduced the music program to us and introduced Scott Drummond, I knew Scott was our partner but I never knew all that he did and now that I do we are all very grateful,” she commented. “Coming here every morning
and starting your day off playing music with your best friends . . . well it helps with your other classes. I love it.” Drummond remarked, “I know now this will be a long-term commitment at least as long as Dave is looking after the program.” This year the music students are fundraising for the national competition in Vancouver next May.
A few of the music students at Campbellford District High School gathered to talk about the program and how an ongoing donation from a local businessman helps keep the instruments fixed and tuned and the program running: from left, Dave Noble, music educator; Scott Drummond, owner of Scott Drummond Motors, benefactor; music students Elizabeth Semlitch, Bethany Spiers and Beatrice Muldroon. Turkey hunter fined $4,000
News - A Bridgenorth man has been fined $4,000 for turkey hunting offences. Antonio Gouveia pleaded guilty to two counts of hunting turkey without a licence and was fined $1,500 for each count. In addition, he pleaded guilty to failing to immediately attach his seal to a turkey and failing to submit information relating to the kill by 12 noon on the day after the turkey was killed, as required. Gouveia received a $500 fine for each charge. The court heard that in October 2013, a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer investigated a complaint of Gouveia hunting turkeys without a licence. The investigation revealed that Gouveia hunted turkey on the opening day of turkey season in 2012 and that he purchased his licence after killing a turkey. In 2013, Gouveia harvested a turkey on the opening day of the season, but failed to attach his seal to the turkey and failed to report the harvest, as required. Gouveia shot a second turkey in the spring of 2013 without a licence. All three turkeys were killed in Selwyn Township, Peterborough County. Justice of the Peace Carl Young heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Peterborough, on December 12, 2013. For further information on hunting regulations, please consult the 20132014 Hunting Regulations Summary available at www.ontario.ca/hunting

“End of an era” as HHS vacates building By Bill Freeman
Lifestyles - Hastings – It was the “end of an era” but also a “new beginning” for the Hastings Historical Society as members clambered to clear out their one-time home on Victoria Street to end 2013. The 15-year-old organization has been told by the Hastings Housing Corporation that it can no longer use the historic former school house to host meetings or keep its collection and its volunteer membership has been working hard to find suitable storage space for crucial items like documents and artifacts. The HHS will continue to meet monthly at the Hastings Civic Centre.
With the assistance of Trent Hills deputy mayor Bob Crate, the HHS has secured one of the large dressing rooms at the Hastings Memorial Arena with some members taking other items into their homes. Artifacts deemed less important to the society, or not connected to the history of the village and district, will be consigned to auction with the proceeds coming back to the HHS. “It is the end of an era but a new beginning,” HHS president Pat Funk said during a break from packing up material at the former Catholic elementary school building. Despite the prospect of a fresh start,
Funk still called the moving a “sad day.” She herself will store some material at her house including a book case, two filing cabinets and historical displays. The displays, she says, will be used throughout the year. The society appreciated the help from Trent Hills staff who helped take some of the material to the arena, said executive member Jim Coveney. “The staff has been very good,” said Coveney. “We’re making the best of an awkward situation. We’ve been lucky to have had this building for as long as we did. Hopefully, we’ll be able to find a new home.”
Coveney says the arena dressing room will provide enough space for temporary storage until they are able to find a permanent location. “We’ll have enough room for the things we think we can keep,” he said. “Some of the items not about Hastings can go to auction; a very limited amount will go to people’s houses, things that have to be kept warm.” Coveney and his fellow HHS members hope that local residents with ideas on permanent locations will step forward and provide some feedback. “The public still doesn’t know about this very much; we’ve still had only limited feedback.”
Coveney is also a member of the society’s digitalization committee and says they will definitely need better space for that program to continue. “We’ll have to take boxes out and do that at people’s houses,” he said. The society, he added, has a lot of antiques, some rather large, in its collection and they will make an earnest effort to make sure they determine their provenance before deciding which ones will be set aside for auction. Some would be of interest to collectors even though they are not specifically of or about Hastings, he said. “If they go into auction the proceeds of the sale will go to the Society.”
Havelock wellness program a “going concern” By Bill Freeman
Lifestyles - Havelock-BelmontMethuen – If the Havelock Country Jamboree can put the municipality on the map as a tourism and music destination then the Community Care Wellness program which fills the town hall on a regular basis might do the same thing from a health and fitness perspective. That’s something Eleanor Cheyne and the more than 30 health and wellness buffs would love to see happen. “It’s very individual and very successful,” Cheyne said after one of her twice-a-week morning sessions. “Health-wise, I’d like us to put ourselves on the map to be healthy people,” she says, noting that Ca-
nadians of all ages are not doing enough to keep themselves fit and active and that is leading to all sorts of stresses on health care programs and facilities. “When you walk out of here high and happy and exercised you then vibrate (that) to other people. It’s just a win-win for everybody.” The four-year-old program sponsored by Community Care Havelock started out with just four people but it has grown through word of mouth and Cheyne’s own infectious passion for “selfempowering” healthiness, both body and soul. There is a program of physical activity as well as nutritional advice and “metaphysical stuff – how to keep yourself pumped; how to change your per-
spective on things.” It has been an “extreme success,” says Cheyne. “It’s a good community here. People have come because they get exactly what they want; whatever that is for each individual they get or they wouldn’t come back.” “The success is that it is a very safe environment and they get a lot out of it,” she says. “Each little success is a huge success and we build on them all the time. We learn not to beat ourselves up; we learn that this is extremely comfortable; you’ve got the support community here.” Groups of friends from across the township and beyond come to the town hall and Cheyne sees those groups intermingling and
new friendships formed but when it comes to the workout they’re all business. “The nice thing is that it is social but we have a program and we do it.” At the heart of the wellness program is a pathway to developing self-confidence through exercise and healthy living, at a pace that is comfortable and individualized. “A lot of the class is, in an indirect way, about self-empower-
ment: how to stand, how to move your body; it’s all about how you feel about yourself. It’s all geared to what you can do.” Community Care has just introduced a new program for people who are at the beginner stage or recovering from things like knee and hip replacement surgery. Cheyne has adapted exercises so people who use walkers or wheel chairs can participate. The program returns January 7.
Natural burial grounds at Warkworth cemetery an option for the future Deputy clerk Shari Lang recommended this course of action rather than do nothing at this time or proceed with a natural burial ground. The cost of interment has increased by 65 to 70 per cent, she said, so the municipality should look at all options for making better use of unused land in the cemetery. Councillor Gene Brahaney wasn’t in favour. “We’ve got enough cemeteries that we’re going to look after in the future ... without starting down another avenue (with) something new and wonderful.” “Is it better ecologically to do it this way?” Councillor Kim McNeil asked. “I don’t know.” lawntractors tractors|| chain saws According to the Natural Burial Aslawn saws||push pushmowers mowers sociation, “bodies are not embalmed, rototillers | generators | snowblowers rototillers | generators | & more but wrapped in a biodegradable shroud or placed in a simple casket in protected 21 Queen St N, Campbellford, ON K0L 1L0 green space. By John Campbell
News – Trent Hills – There are no immediate plans for adding natural burial grounds at the Warkworth Cemetery but council hasn’t ruled that out as an option in the next five to 10 years.
It also gave staff the green light to look at other options in the next phase of development at the cemetery, including columbariums (a storage area for urns containing cremated remains), scattering grounds, and cremation lots.

Students’ kindness helps Grinch’s heart grow
The student Whos of Norwood District Public School have watched the grumpy old Grinch’s heart triple in size this month as he fell victim to a wave of random acts of kindness and became a convert to the goodness that lies within the hearts of those who care for each other. It was an impressive display by students at the school who displayed the random acts of kindness in the front foyer with the Grinch watching from his nearby perch. Kindness was everywhere: from helping to shelve books and helping a friend tie their shoelaces to helping with a gingerbread house, helping someone who fell in the snow and opening doors to school visitors. And as every Who knows: “Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see. Proudly showing of the school’s random acts of kindness display are Emerson, in grade one, and grade two student Ava. where defensive play, and not trying to score on every rush, was the key to victory. That was the message Stewart delivered to the 13 members of the team down the third period stretch and they followed it perfectly. The emphasis during practice is always on skill improvement and fundamentals, he says. “In practice there’s a lot of skating, a little bit of stickhandling and puck stuff. There are no systems or anything like that, they have to get the basics, said Stewart. “It was nice to be in a close game, whether winning or losing, so they get that feeling and they know they have to work hard. The team is getting Olympian offense from Colby Hanbidge who has fired in 30 goals and added 14 assists; Ethan Toms has 18 goals and eight assists while AJ Heffernan has scored 12 times with Marshall Flynn (10-14-24) and Rowan Stewart (9-3-12) also helping on the scoreboard. Goalie Tanner Beavis has 2.64 goals against average. Also on the team are Darcie Stewart, Shane Archer, Nathan Kimball, Brody Graham, Lucy Matthews, Devin

PET News – Havelock – “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the season,” says Judi Shelswell of the relationship the Havelock office of Allen Insurance Group has with the volunteer Smitty’s Christmas Wish committee. This was the fourth year that the Havelock office collected toys, cash and Canadian Tire money and donated it to the Smit-
ty’s Christmas campaign. “Children need it and that’s what Christmas is all about,” Shelswell said. “The office gets behind it in a big way.” They began collecting gift items and cash donations at the beginning of November. All of the five offices in the Allen group participate in local fundraisers and in Havelock Smitty’s Wish and a December collection for the food
bank are marked solidly on the Havelock office’s calendar. “It makes us feel good to help local children,” says Shelswell. “It’s about giving back to the community as well and supporting the local community.” The Smitty’s campaign and the individuals, groups and businesses that support it symbolize what small town life is all about, she added.
Building permit fees get a boost By Bill Freeman
News – Havelock – Building permit fees will be adjusted upwards striking a more balanced ratio between permit revenue and taxation. For additions, covered porches, accessory buildings and decks the revenue to taxation ratio will be 50/50 and for dwellings the ratio will be 84/16. The building permit fee for dwellings, additions and covered porches will increase from the current 80 cents per square feet to 93 cents per square feet. The per square foot fee for accessory buildings will increase from 45 cents to 48 cents and from 28 cents to 54 cents for decks. In the 2013 schedule, the fee to taxation ratio for dwellings was 72/28, 43/57 for additions
and covered porches, 45/55 for accessory buildings and 26/74 for decks. To arrive at the proposal staff “performed a detailed analysis of costs as they relate to the processing of certain types of building permits,” treasurer Val Nesbitt explained in a report to council. “In order to ensure accurate information was used for the square footage, an average was obtained from building permit data during 2010-12 for each type of permit,” Nesbitt said. Direct operations costs associated with the processing of permit applications included wages, benefits, general office expenses, data processing, travel, training, memberships and dues and miscellaneous expenses. Indirect costs like overhead
and support services, office space, legal fees and internal staff time were combined for the purposes of the report and the calculation of fees she noted. The report “did not attempt to quantify either direct or indirect costs but attempts to illustrate the majority of staff time direct costs by permit type.” “This is something we’ve been dealing with for some time,” Mayor Ron Gerow said, adding that staff and council review the township’s fee schedule every year. “Building fees it was deemed (should) move in an upward direction to make them more self-sufficient,” Gerow said. “Council has struggled for a number of years to make this program as close to self-sufficient as possible.”
