STUDENT LIFE: GET INVOLVED YOUR COLLEGE: ACADEMIC, PERSONAL & SOCIAL SUPPORT At Trent, our colleges are communities that promote learning, embrace diversity, and lead to friendships that last a lifetime. Made up of classrooms, lounges, faculty offices, dining facilities, residences, and more, they are places where students can make meaningful connections between each other, and with professors and staff.

“Being involved with my college has made my Trent University experience amazing! For me, Champlain College has given me a sense of belonging. No matter where you’re living, on-campus, off-campus, or half-way across the world, you have a space at Trent to call your home!”

You don’t have to be in residence to be part of a college. All Trent students, in all years, are part of a college community, which brings together a unique blend of traditions, events, workshops, places to hang-out, and support services – all designed to help you experience a true sense of belonging. Involvement in your college will also help you to develop skills that are considered desirable by employers, and that lead to a healthy lifestyle while you’re a student and long after you’ve graduated. trentu.ca/colleges

LADY EATON COLLEGE

OTONABEE COLLEGE

Tradition and a dynamic community are at Champlain’s core, which embodies the spirit of adventure and discovery of the famous French explorer for whom it is named. From ancient history to international perspectives, politics to active living, ongoing discussion here is all about how people acting locally can make a difference on a broader global scale.

Named after the famed Canadian broadcaster, and located in Enweying, a building whose name means “the way we speak together,” Gzowski is a place that fosters respectful dialogue about issues that affect our everyday lives. At the intersection of marketplaces and sustainability, or economics and Canada’s First Peoples, Gzowski thrives on inspiring, complex, and meaningful stories.

Creative energy, a passion for local community, and a commitment to selfexpression all describe Lady Eaton. Inspired by the values of social justice found at the core of social work, and gender studies, and drawing on disciplines like history, philosophy and modern languages, LEC is a place that looks to understand how abstract concepts can be translated into practical social change.

In Ojibwe, Otonabee means “river that beats like a heart” which symbolizes the way this college looks to the horizon and imagines ways of keeping up with a fast-paced life while honouring the heart. The curious spirit of the college is fuelled by sciences asking questions about how things work, while social sciences lead to a closer examination of complex dynamics between people. Otonabee is a place that seeks new insight and is changeoriented.

Want to live your education in a global way? Trent offers a wide-range of study abroad options that will allow you to internationalize your degree.

STUDY ABROAD AND CHANGE YOUR WORLDVIEW Study abroad opportunities are available in every program and major. Choose from:

Exchange Program Trent’s partnerships with universities around the world make it very easy for you to study abroad through an exchange program, which swaps two students – you spend a semester or year abroad in a chosen country and a student from that country comes to Trent. Department Year Abroad Some of Trent’s departments offer their own programs for you to take your classes overseas and on-location, so you can experience firsthand what you’re studying. Enroll in one of Trent’s field schools in Belize, or try a field course in Taiwan. The Honours Arts and Honours Science options at Trent are geared towards students who want to explore a few different areas of study in their first year before declaring a major or joint-major. You may even choose to combine different disciplines and take courses from programs across both the arts and sciences. Journalism and Environmental Studies? Business and Media Studies? The possibilities are virtually endless.

In BAS, enjoy more degree combinations than any other program at Trent! In addition to four core courses, students choose two minors; one from the sciences and one from the arts. In addition, fourth year students design and pursue their own research projects, guided and supervised personally by a Trent faculty member. Create the degree you want in the BAS program at Trent.

THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL LEARNING Teacher Education Stream (B.A. or B.Sc.)

Emphasis in Teacher Education (B.A. or B.Sc.)

Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)

This program provides students with a strong foundation for application to a consecutive teacher education program, and ultimately the teaching profession. It is taken concurrently with an Honours B.A. or B.Sc. degree. Students gain practical and theoretical knowledge through course work, participation in two workshops per year on current issues in education, and 75 hours (over four years) of experiential placements. Each year, a number of spaces in the Trent Consecutive Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program are reserved for graduates of this Teacher Education Stream.

The Emphasis in Teacher Education program provides a pathway for those who want the option to pursue education, but who are not yet certain they will continue on to a B.Ed. The Emphasis program is available to Trent students in a single or joint major honours program and provides students with customized course work so that they are well positioned to pursue a B.Ed. (This does not guarantee admission into the Consecutive B.Ed. program.)

The Consecutive Education program is available upon completion of an undergraduate degree, and certifies successful candidates to teach at the Elementary or Secondary level in Ontario. This two year program combines attention to individual learners in small class settings with a community-based approach. The program is guided by a philosophy of ecological and social justice, recognition of learner diversity and well-being, curriculum excellence, and a commitment to professionalism. Students apply the theory and skills they learn in their courses to the classroom and think critically about their practice.

Why Trent? • Although completion of the Teacher Education Stream (TES) program does not guarantee admission to the B.Ed. program, the TES provides an outstanding foundation for a later application to the B.Ed., and is recommended as the best pathway to take at Trent for those undergraduate students who know they want to become teachers. • Workshops linked to the priorities of Ontario curriculum guidelines, including environmental education, Indigenous knowledge, and social justice themes; The Impact Leadership Program and Penpals also support an enriched Trent experience.

Why Trent? • The foundational course work provides students with skills and knowledge specialized to educators for future employment. • Transcripts of students who complete the program contain a special notation.
