Taichung, Taiwan
Urban cities, like a piece of paper; it can be destroyed by a cup of spilled water, but we can't live without it.
1
Most of my projects were started from a misunderstanding.
2 Architecture
Although architecture is passive and concretionary, it contains emotion as well as a life of its own. It attracts me to feel it and embrace it. I appreciate all the clues that architecture gives. Architecture helped me understanding the world and myself. Trent Yang dolphintrent@gmail.com

From Realistic to Abstract
3
I like walking on the street. My hometown, Taiwan, is a combination of truly living and contradictory form. The reality on the street completely enthralles me. Having a lack of knowledge and experience, I hold different opinions from everything I see. Also, events that happened on the street have become resources to my research. I picture all the possibilities how these events can fit into the creations of my designs. By understanding the misunderstanding, I began to have ideas for the true purpose of architecture. However, architecture is not as great as I thought. The most creative and controversial projects are always discussed during a class, but they rarely become real designs. These ideas and imaginations, made me understand the clarity of reality.

WANDERING MODE - FREE ADMISSION Rethinking the contemporary public space
Introduction In a prosperous city, waste pickers today can be found easily. They provide an unusual contrast to the busy people. For waste pickers, everything has no arrangement. They wander on the streets and roads, and they look around the trash nearby. Different than salaried people, waste pickers don't have a certain direction, such as an aimless vagabond. This phenomenon creates great contrast which has made me pay attention to them inadvertently.
5
After working with a number of waste pickers, they made me truly explore the city and see it in this perspective: “One could understand society by understanding the waste material. This project is divided into two parts. In the beginning, I was trying to solve the living problem for waste pickers. I made a mobile shelter so that they could have a temporary dwelling. The second part is re-thinking the contemporary public space. Thinking about how to create a public space that can be adapted to everyone including waste pickers.

Waste pickers at risk In Feng Chia University Night Market, Taichung, Taiwan, there are many waste pickers walking on the street. They pick waste materials until early morning. The next day, they walk to the recycle center to sell the waste materials they picked the night before. Waste pickers contribute to the development of environmental sanitation, while they also bring a series of social problems for city administration. For instance, they occupy the road tidying up the waste materials causing accidents to happen frequently. Some waste pickers are struck by vehicles; therefore, the police had no choice but to forbid them. Variation of trolley 11:15 pm

Trolley
9
The trolley is an essential accessory for waste pickers. They do everything with this trolley, such as eating, sleeping and working, etc. The container of a trolley should be large enough to carry all the trash. I spent six months walking closely with different waste pickers, meeting them and talking to them. The waste material they pick on the street all look alike, yet the look of their trollies varies: different styles, different sizes and different ways of combination. In the course of time and specific situation, trolleys were composed to last but would only be modified depending on the demand of the use. The trolley transforms to a unique form. Every model of trolley represents a different waste picker.

Since about half of the waste picker population does not have a specific residence, they wander in the city, their home. A trolley is all they own.

Mobile Shelter Urban city
11
Gathering trolley + Repose place This is a shelter that can move in the city. It also can be a mobile studio that helps a waste picker to tidy up the waste materials on the street. They could find a temporarily location, such as under-highway, a house back alley, or side of railroad and set up their shelters. Moreover, the shelter has a basic trolley that can be detach from the device (mobile shelter).

It can be easy to move on the road when people need to replace the location, and it also provides a sufficient living area. The major purpose for the first floor is a recycling studio; the private space was placed at the upper floor.

I don't know whether or not focusing on waste pickers can truly improve their life. Architecture is not individual service; it is a public service for everyone. Each person has the right to feel free in any public space. Nowadays, hierarchical society causes people to compete with each other. As cities become more developed, public spaces are becoming commercial. To built a building often implies a symbol of wealth. Therefore, the capital cities are full of skyscrapers. People climb higher in order to watch the pattern of the city where they are living. It is a transition from desire to authority because people want to approach a higher class of living. The bourgeoisie has not disappeared, it has merely changed form. I am thinking that building into the ground is another way to balance hierarchy. A desired hole that everyone can see clearly. A hole for the whole of society.
For the waste pickers, although they can't earn enough wage to live, their biggest contradiction is they have lost confidence in gregariousness.
City Hole - from sky into the ground I spent most of my time in understanding the whole society in which I worked. After working with a number of waste pickers, they made me truly explore the city and the true purpose for architecture. What is a great public space? This project does not have a set program. All the events on the street have become the parameter of design. The purpose for the building is to serve the entire society. I, like a waste picker, started wandering the streets. I gathered something I wanted, just like a tramp sitting on the roadside, and watched the people hurrying to and fro. Everywhere could be your observation. During the wandering time, I was given a deep impression. The society provides a clue to what is successful public space in the city. Streets in Taiwan have the potential to affect the way we re-think the basic purpose of public space. Great public space should not pick users. It's suitable to everyone.
18
Feng Chia University night market - model of public space The traditional street in Taiwan is ambiguous, especially the domain of Feng Chia University night market. Massive tourists visit here every day. FCU night market has been referred to as the essential shopping attraction in Taiwan. On the weekend, the heavy traffic has become a serious problem in this area. The street is occupied by the vendors to do business. It is also filled with vehicles and tourists. I witnessed the extraordinary spectacle every day, but I have never felt uncomfortable. I was fascinated to figure out the inner contradiction of this street, and found that the street is the best model of public space.
The Street is similar to the theater. The only difference is the street displays reality without Post-production.

Look for Real - Events and trash / the parameters in public
“One could understand society by understanding the waste material. I had analyzed the waste materials in order to infer the evidence of activities.
21
Different from a waste picker, I am an event picker. I walked on the street and recorded everything I saw. In my opinion, an architect is similar to the waste picker, the city is a recycling center, and the architects tidy up the events and reorganize them.

This is a survey on the street of the FCU night market. The use of the street is very diverse, just like a 24hr worker who holds two or more jobs, always working and never stops. In fact, in the same location, different things are happening at different times. For example, in the morning, the breakfast vendor at the arcade sells egg rolls or baked toast to students, and in the afternoon, night market vendors take over for their clothing business. At midnight, it becomes a temporary shelter for teenagers to hang out. Therefore, FCU night market street is continuously filled with different users.

finding the rules in spaces User / Mode The street is made for public-use so that different groups can occupy the same place at different times of the day. Therefore, some new spaces appear with modification when the user is doing specific activity on the street. The street has been transferred to another program. Six programs have created six modes on one cyclical day, but the modification can make it seem like it never existed. In other words, even if the street was used by different groups, it could seem like it had never been occupied. These events are temporary. The space would be reverted to a normal street after being used, restored to the empty street.

Wandering Mode This change has become a way to transform the space, different groups have a different manner of using the street. I sorted out six different groups. All of them rely on the street to do activities. I tried to simplify these activities for understanding the relation of user and space. These modes are created by six storyboards. Below the diagrams, each of them occurs between a period time and a distance.

Waste pickers created an additional space near the street boundary. The street began to expand. If the street skin could be ripped and pulled, the vertical street is a possibility in the building.
When the vendor was doing business on the street, it had been eroded into some extra spaces. Can you imagine this occurring under the ground? In this mode, I am thinking about placing waste pickers working studio under the street. It's a space under the ground, such as soil erosion.
If a row of taxis were parked on the roadside, it will definitely cause a traffic jam. Fast and exclusive passageway is necessary. The service passageway cannot disappear in the public space. I have created a service connection between space and space. Users can make effectual movement to the place where they want to reach.

When the truck open the back door, the space of cargo could be seen clearly. Folder is when someone makes some physical movement, extra space will appear. Cave hotel is what I image. It is important people care private and public space in the hotel. If people open the door to a hotel room, it connects to the hallway. In that moment, privateness is public.
Ramp implies a sustainable situation. It keeps someone in movement. Not only can the ramp produce continuous connection, but also the ramp provide accessible environment in the public space.
Direction made people understand where they are supposed to go. But shoppers' locations are unpredictable. The general building was held up with strong columns in the commercial area. It is easy to confuse the direction. In this case, I try to make slanted pillars in order to get strong sense of direction.

The new face for the building - advertising When massive media appear in front of one's eyes, more and more people were forced to read the message, and the reality will be replaced. People would rather to believe these repeated messages, and not to find out the truth. Likewise, if exterior wall became the best advertising, we probably forgot the certain face of building before. Buildings have had a new facade, and the interior of a building also had new style. For instance, the window becomes a superfluous accessory. Indoor and outdoor began to blurred. Original facades disappeared, traditional buildings disappeared. "Desire are making the city to have autism."
This is an unfinished design, the process of research made me realize two realities. One is body, another is society.

TO CROSS THE ROAD / BODY CONSCIOUSNESS Microscopic Design in Metapolis Societies
Introduction In Taiwan, people spend an average of one hour a day in Transportation (Commuter). If people can live to 75 years old, the computing for a lifetime, people spend 20,007 hours, equal to more than 1100 days, in transportation. About three years, people have stayed in the mobile devices which were called "car", "train", "subway", or "aircraft". This is the selective topic of urban planning is used to explore the influences of the main boulevard of city. Taichung Kong Road is the most important road in the city of Taichung, and it connects business districts and residential areas. Hence, the public transformation systems are designated on this road. This system is named the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). The work is expected to take ten years.
47
We know that construction of transport infrastructure will cause serious traffic problems. During the 10 year construction time, public transportation systems will become very chaotic. In this period, Taichung Kong Road will turn into the most ineffective road in the city. Making it a super parking lot.

Face traffic disaster The 10 year period of time will make travel difficult. I plan to alleviate this problem through the use of artificial devices. These devices will affect the commuters who are using Taichung Kong Road. The distraction produced new of body experience, and indirectly raised body autonomous of human in fast of mass transport development - out of body experience.

Microscopic Design in Metapolis Societies Metapolis is the name given to those urban phenomena, which, going beyond the metropolitan scale, free themselves from any territorial medium to base themselves on interconnection networks composed of visible means of transport and invisible means of communication. Under the denomination of metapolis, urban attributes are acquired by all those spaces which, whether they belong to the city or not, comply with the condition of taxing its resources, work forces, and habitat to the metropolis by guaranteeing itsdaily functioning. “Microscopic Observation is an approach which recognizes a phenomenon as minute motion of a small object, not the whole as static taken together. From the viewpoint of physics, we are at a position to focus on the movement of each molecule, which is a component of the object. People, nature and materials are, when they are viewed from afar, static and boring objects. However, we realize these objects. - Research background given -

A routine memory From my experience, our lives fill various objects. Body in the space is passive. After a period of time, our brains are familiar with the object existing nearby. Bodies adapt the object around them, but are not familiar with this space. (environments) Our memories are made from different objects. It can even be said we are one of the objects. However, in the space without too many objects, such as a bathroom, I always only find my body.

"In the past, walking was the only way to commute. Because people work out on the way, they generally have a slender figure."
Busy body and Transportation If "efficiency" is the buzzword for those seeking to develop the urban planning, the government should take the decision seriously. With the development of capitalism, the efficiency becomes the best endorsement of urban planning. When pursuing the movement of efficiency, the bodies are protected better and better so that we can receive a safer journey.
53
However the sensations still exist, we lost the autonomy in movement. Transportation system has been developed, but the body was made no progress. Regarding the surrounding sensations of body, advanced transportation is more like a narcotic to weaken the sensation of visual and tactile.
Development of transportation
In the subway, we may ignore the people surrounding us, and we may ignore the cold feeling caused by air conditioning. I always take easy on which stop I should get off. Because in subconscious, I know I can get to a destination safely without using the function of sensations. Our bodies are unconsciously tamed by machine and technology.
With the development of transportation progress, the bodies become more and more small in the mobile devices.
54
I am a commuter who repeat the same life every day.
Move in the movement 55
Efficiency is main supportive concept of city planning and pushes the great and fast progress regarding residents within the city, including the thoughts, experience, and behaviors of people. Economic always become a stimulation for improving technology and socirty. Reviewing the past and look forward to the future. In the history of transportation, the high speed changes, the more protections people need to prepare for and receive. In this efficiency as urban development framework, I try to explore how to find the autonomy of people in thoughts, attitude, behaviors, and in the process of movement during the period of transport development.
Consciousness One day, on the way back home, when I was driving the car on the road, a flower seller hits on my window asking me to purchase some flowers. Suddenly, I woke up, and I draft lower the window to talk to her, as I remembered I was on the road.

We are unable to see, or touch time. But people are always caught up by time. Have you ever thought about how you can feel the time? This flyover is associated with a vertical time machine. When people are walking on the flyover, the flyover is also walking on the road. As a result, time can be felt by the movement. When the flyover is moving, the wheel below the pedestrian deck was caused a stable belt, to move round continuously to keep hour time turning. Just like a bigger horological gear.

Introduction
Yi lan is a move city
I can't remember when I started, but Google Earth has become a kind of way to remember my country. Four years ago, our research base was located in Yilan, Taiwan. In the past, Yilan was developed by traditional industries. Because of the convenient transportation, more and more people came from the capital city of Taipei to Yilan in order to enjoy the rural life. By law, only farmers have the right to purchase agriculture land. However, those people are not real farmers, but they change their status to farmers and buy agricultural land so that they could build their own "agricultural houses". Recently, it has become a controversial issue in Taiwan. The immigration of population from one city to another can be viewed as a kind of pathological metaphor to describe the condition that people interact with and influence each other. People, who have moved from Taipei to Yilan, have not created their own lifestyles because the city is located in an obscure area between modern cities and countries. Residents and public officials in the City of Yilan do not want to make a fuss over such a trifle. However, these easily-ignored trifles may become troublesome for the city, the 'Achilles' heel' of urban development. 2011 Studio Project Advisor : Lo Shi-Wei, Huang Sheng-Yuan Location : Yilan, Taiwan Program : Social Design, Urban planning

Matrixing A Festival Urbanism in Yi-Lan Yilan has become another kingdom of Taiwan with its radical political, social and urban reform endeavor far more aggressive than other counties around the island. The leaders in Yilan steered clear of the profit-driven mode of industrialization and urbanization in the West of Taiwan, and toward a more sustainable and not less viable development. International Children’s Festival staged at Dongsan River in Yilan has been a sensational event in summer time in Taiwan. It becomes an annual engine to trigger urban vitality and demonstrate a competitive soft city management. Besides, the county government is also working with NPOs to prepare Event of Golden Horse Prize for Film and the Biennale Exhibition of Architecture.
71
How can Yilan develop a Festival Urbanism based on the city management achieved for the past decades? How to mobilize and integrate the local cities, settlement, rivers and geographic resources for the festival programming and promotion? - Research background given -
Wujie, where has various traditional industries, is a culture town in Yilan. Annual International Children’s Festival has been brought a large number of tourists.

-Wujie area. YilanAfter doing the field research, I found there are a lot of traditional industries in the domain of Wujie. Although these industries are private firms and factories, they play a major part in the logistical support of Yilan. They also provide essential life in the West of Taiwan. Three north-south transportation, railroad, freeway no.5 and provincial road, have enhanced the transportation system to become the sufficient way to connect Taipei and Yilan. Convenient transportation / Contradiction These images depict the convenience of eastern transportation. The population of Yilan is about 400,000, but tourists have increased to 1.4 million each year.

The differences among cities can be reported and noticed via observing the trifles or basic daily city problems and routine phenomena. Gaps exist when different values get together. Wujie, the town in Yilan has experienced change in the city development and received new thoughts for its growth. For example, many industries moved out, and the number of visitors has been increasing rapidly because of public transportation systems Freeway No. 5.

Festival Urbanism - Local industries
-Wujie area. YilanFor the whole history of a city, the “traditional memory and new thoughts toward the city are both considered and then combined. However, many architectural studies are criticized for their neglect of the older history and traditions. How to find a way to keep traditional agriculture despite rapid urban growth?

Festival in Wujie Two famous festivals are organized in Wujie, Yilan. One of the important festivals is Wang Kang Fire Trodden Festival. It is an annual event to celebrate Wang Kang's birthday in Wang Kung Temple. Local people believe that if they participate in this event, God will bless them with safety and happiness. Another is International Children’s Festival. It is a contemporary festival for children in Dong Shan River Park.

Industrial transformation As can be seen in the diagram, some traditional industries which have potential prospect in the city development were selected after the field ground research. Thinking of the new social design, these private firms could be converted and upgraded into a new age of traditional industry.

Story Framework Traditional industry chosen - pig farming
A Life of Pig / A Day of People While researching field ground in Yilan, below is the dialog between a pig farmer and I. Pig farmer: people always think we are dirty, we are unwelcome in this city. Yang: why do you still keep this job? Pig farmer: the pigs always stay with me, and never left since I was a child. I can't leave them forever. We discussed a lot of things about pigs. Before I left, he yelled at me! Pig farmer: You know pigs are cleaner than people.
77
Social design is a tactic for urban development, and it can not be achieved without participation from local residents and private firms. Pig farming was only one selection in this project. Different selections could create different stories of social design.
The pig farmer took me to many places in Yilan. This was a story describing a day with a pig farmer. Not only did I participate in the local life, but also I enjoyed the rural living in Yilan city. Pig farming

This is an intervention between the tourists and local industries. Because massive amount of visitors come to Yilan to participate in the festival, a route was arranged from the traditional festival (Wang Kung Temple) to the contemporary festival (International Children’s Festival) by passing through the residential area of traditional industries. A new lifestyle associated with local residents provided visitors a new in-depth tourism. A series scenario demonstrated how people would live with this transformation of the industry. Hence, one of the traditional industries, pig farming, was chosen to be the framework of this social design.

Urban developments have to combine different perspectives. Although the building is the biggest object human made, it has a limit affect to the city. However, a route, was to integrate socially, could be far-reaching between the rural area and the city. And it is a way to keep traditional agriculture despite rapid urban growth.

HORIZONTAL FARM OF LIVING
Introduction
91
The moment I took off from Mumbai, India, the surrounding suddenly calm down. The silence was drastically different from environment with which I was familiar. The memory constantly came to my mind; the people attempting to enrich their life. They don't want to waste another minute. India is varied, everything is unpredictable and unbelievable, but there is an example close to everyone's life. People can see a similar lifestyle as themselves. Although the street is chaotic, I observe the implication of systems are based on empiricism. The people in India have their own lifestyle and living system. Moreover, India is a generous country despite the messive environment. The most beautiful and most ugly are truly in front of people's eyes without cover. I had the impression that Indian culture exhibits an image of collage. I take the example of Dharavi in Mumbai, which is a slum area and has its own specific infrastructure. 93
Dharavi is a village in Mumbai, India, that has grown in size and complexity over the past 100 years. Often referred to as a “slum, it is better thought of as an intact, historical pattern of living that has not been compromised by the logic of modern development.

Space Syntax

commercial / commercial commercial / industrial residential / industrial institutional residential /commercial residential / residential
We used space syntax as a methodology to analyze the street network of a small portion within Dharavi. We did this hoping to come to an understanding of the logic of the land use and to tease out a relationship between land-use and location within the network. We also did a visual analysis of the spaces between the buildings to see if there is a visual imperative at work in the hidden logic of the land-use patterns. INFERENCES (AXIAL INTEGRATION) The longest RED line in the diagram is parallel to the 90 feet road. The diagram shows that this line is most accessible and hence connected well with the road and in turn the rest of the city. The long curving line in the north of the Sub-sector 5 of sector 4 shows varying levels of axial integration. At no point does it show a high level of integration. This is contradictory to our experience on site. This could be a result of the scale of the analysis.
North of the Sub-sector 5 of sector 4
After generating a comprehensive axial integration map we noticed that the long curving street in the north of the site shows highest axial connectivity in the central portion which reduces towards both ends and is high toward the 90 feet road.
The diagram shows most streets in BLUE which depicts less or no visual connectivity. The long curving line in the north of the Sub-sector 5 of sector 4 shows varying levels of visual connectivity. At certain points it has maximum visual connectivity. Based on our experience on site the street has more such points. But due to the scale of the analysis the diagram shows differently. The RED area in the center shows maximum visual integration. This is contradictory to our experience on site.

This is most notably true when considering the intensely integrated and mixed nature of the land use. It is common to find commercial usage on the street level, and residential above, across the street from a site that has industrial usage above residential below. This is a far cry from the standard separated use pattern that is pervasively seen in modern planning.

After visiting Mumbai and Ahmedabad in February 2012. I had the impression that Indian culture exhibits an image of collage. I take the example of Dharavi in Mumbai, which is a slum area and has its own specific infrastructure. It's a collage with wasted materials. The logic of Dharavi’s infrastructure can be concluded as the following ideology: Minimal infrastructure yet with Maximum profit. It is a system with a very limited water supply and sewage system and only a low percentage of electricity supply. Therefore, inhabitants there have to try to find their own ways to live and survive. It is suggested to provide basic water supply and electricity based on a natural and efficient mechanism within which animals and human inhabitants work together to reach their own infrastructural system without outside help from the government or the private sectors. In this natural and efficient horizontal farm system, the first element introduced is to insert a sky street which accelerates productive people to move from one area to others in a rather more efficient way than on those ground level streets. This phenomenon can be noticed within Mumbai in that one tends to find a gigantic elevated walkway which flies over slum areas where one hardly finds way out on ground level as the winding alley ways exhibit a labyrinth pattern.

This project is talking about the innovation of residential behavior in Taiwan. Buying a new house for the millennial generation is very difficult. In the project, we are thinking about purchasing a room instead to buy a house or apartment. A new residential experience Except the private room, all the necessary program spaces are communal. People always want to see beautiful interior set ups inside of buildings. Behind the architecture, a large number of equipment helps support the building can be functioned well. Each device has its own unique mode of operation. This equipment helps people to be lived comfortable inside. In the exhibition, visitors can see the value of equipment of the building, such as the air conditioner, small water tower and surveillance cameras, etc. Accessories of build become a main character in the space. This allows visitors can be learned about the importance of what goes on behind the scenes of building. Re-think which kind of architectures deserve to enter their lives. Introduction In Taiwan, Metal Corrugate Wall Sheet is a normal material that is used in rural. It is also used in the mountain regions where it is difficult to reach, due to the adjustable qualities of the wall sheet it can be used to build quickly. We were given an assignment to renew the existing building in remote mountain region. The original building structure was made by steel. We were thinking about how to preserve the integrity of the natural land and basic structure as much as possible.

2014 Occupational project worked at Johnson Liao Space Design Studio Location : Xinshe Township, Taichung Program : Renew house
The house was sited at remote mountain in the Xinshe Township, Taichung, Located in the hillside. There is a small trail that extends to the valley below. In 10 minutes, you can reached tributaries of Dajia River. Unfortunately, it has been contaminated.

The building was to respond to the site’s topography, aspect and environment. The entrance site is on higher ground, with a gentle slope leading down to a flat field with various native trees. A house of two stories is located in front of field. The plan is to follow the hillside slope, so we created a new entry ramp to connect the building. Different than the normal two-storeyed house, we shift the space program between lower-level and upperlevel.
site plan
The second storey is the primary shared communal space, and it includes the living area and kitchen. The central has been placed a stair down to the ground floor. The lower-level plan is a simple living room, divided into three distinct volumes, master suite, tea room, and bathing pool.

Each project requires new and challenging methods for building, and each one must have great client support. Building into the mountain always brings negative criticism. We currently have no way to construct buildings without damaging the environment. Decreasing the interference is what we struggle to do. People can't stop building; but at least we maintain passion and respect to experience the environment until find the suitable way with nature.
