Message: NOM COORDINATOR “WE HAVE A SECRET IN OUR CULTURE: IT IS NOT THAT BIRTH IS PAINFUL, IT IS THAT -WOMEN ARE STRONG!” This is the core idea for this centenary year that I, JCI.Sen Sheetaal Gandhi serving as the NOM COORDINATOR JcrtWing, Lady JCmember, JCI India is up to the maximum utilisation. Femininity, modesty, discretion, virtue, and graciousness are seemingly relics of a bygone erase out of place in contemporary culture as the horse and carriage. Instead, the “ideal” woman of our age is glamorous, sophisticated, aggressive, powerful, outspoken, career-minded, independent, self-sufficient, and sensuous. She is in control of her own life, as well as the people and circumstances around her. God has made us vastly different from men, not only physiologically, but also emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually. Womanhood is a gift to be treasured, valued, and received with gratitude. But it is a privilege that comes with certain inescapable responsibilities. Those responsibilities are rooted in the purpose for which God made us. I being a part of this JCI Movement for almost 32 years, feel that JCI is one such platform to enrich ,empower and hone skills for our practical lives .I see it as a greatest responsibility; once you are acquainted to this organisation where you involve ,connect and commit yourself to the other and the society as a whole. This year I feel I need to throw light on updating and upgrading ourselves to suit the necessities of our day to day lives else the upcoming generation has no special place for us in the society. We would be left here handicapped and with the low esteem curbed with the feel of being obsolete. The JCRT Wing has also been very vibrant in grabbing all the available opportunities to the maximum and unleashing their potentials to the core. The first 3 months of this centenary year has been very lavishly celebrated with lot of zest, zeal and enthusiasm keeping in mind the worthiness of the projects and the value addition. FEMINA GRAND, INTEGRITY DAY, VALENTINES BASH were smartly conducted and transformations were visualised .I wish this magazine “La Femme “to touch the hearts of every reader and glorify their inner self. My heart felt wishes to Dr Hema Rajesh, the Zone Director, Zone 22 for this initiative and hearty wishes to the editor JC Tresa Ouseph, for using this magazine as a tool to touch lives. KEEP ROCKING. SPREAD SMILES AND HAPPINESS. JCI.Sen.Sheetaal Gandhi.

''EDUCATION: THE POWER TO EMPOWER" The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble,Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. The Constitution grants equality to women ;empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favor of women .Education brings about the advancement, development and empowerment of women.Higher educational level has been demonstrated to have clear impacts on the health and economic future of women, which in turn improves the prospects of their entire community.Education is the key to empowering women, which helps in bringing about social equality Women education programme works on improving lives and providing opportunities for women through increased participation in formal and alternative education systems. Life gets in the way of a women, especially in a country like ours...some of us have to settle in life earlier, we get married ,have kids... We take up unsatisfying jobs and are forced to discontinue our studies!Well it doesn't have to be that way. Its never too late to continue your education one could do distance education programmes and pay the fees by working at the same time. There are lots of universities which have courses for women who want to continue education and empower themselves by learning new skills too. There are scholarships and grants too. These courses would also be helpful for the working women to climb up the ladder and obtain higher positions in the career. There are online courses too these days;one needn't step out too. One could manage everything at home itself. Women should focus on ways of empowering themselves.Prioritising ourselves isn't a luxury! It's time for us to embrace and empower ourselves. Let education be our power to empower.
GUEST COLUMN DO YOU WONDER HOW TO BE MORE FEMININE? Here are 7 tips to get you feeling like a REAL WOMAN "My feminity is always something I have tried to preserve in this dog-eat-dog world"(MargretSmithCourt) Okay ,right off ,you might think :"Who the heck is he?A MAN ,to tell me a WOMAN -how to be more FEMININE!!!!How dare he?Humph!" Well ,I figured women write about masculinity,so I am going to write about feminity. But it can be even hard to even know what it means to be feminine in these times in which women have been encouraged to fulfill roles traditionally filled by men and we men have been called to embrace our feminine sides..Whilstrightly embracing equality, the baby has been tossed out alongside the bathwaterso that any traditional facets of feminity or masculinity have become a bit taboo. There is nothing wrong with inhabiting your gender_with embracing, even reveling in your feminity. Taking time to feel more feminine, with rushed lives and multiple demands,it can be hard to take timeto feel feminine. And while the ideology of feminism undoubtedlydid some good in some ways, the more fanatical strains held that there were no real innate differences between men and women at all. FortunatelyScience has found that idea to be false:so thankfully women can embrace their very real feminity once more. Here are some ideas, undoubtedly from a man, that may just help you feel like a real woman: 1)Enjoy being a woman for your own sake. Sure ,men prefer feminine women, who tend to make them feel, inturn, more masculine. But pleasing men shouldn't be the only reason to enjoy your feminity.Take time, now,ti actually think:what makes you feel most feminine? What kinds of situations? Are there certain kinds of people who make you feel particularly feminine? Some less feminine females may attack others they see as 'more girly':as people do sometimes oppose those who are different from themselves:but stand up and be feminine if that's what you want. 2)Realize feminity means strength. Not all strength looks the same.It doesn't all have to be over-powering,confrontational or aggressive. I think traditional feminity upset some feminists because they felt typically feminine attributes such as inclusiveness, wanting to look nice, being caring and wanting to be a homemaker rather than a dealmaker equated with being 'weak'or 'shallow'.RUBBISH!!!! Women were once described as the 'weaker sex'.Actually all the researches point to women being the stronger sex.Men are more likely to die at any age than women.Men are more physically damaged by strong emotion than woman and men are more likely to die sooner after the eath of their wife than vice versa. Women maybe the fairer sex but they are not the weaker sex.And there is nothing weak or subservient in being typically feminine.Typically, femnity means strength not weakness. 3)Take pride in a feminine appearance. So many women dress in traditionally masculine clothes:jeans, joggers thick jumpers and that is well and goodand practical and of course, you can be feminine no matter what you wear. But to really feel and seem feminine dress up to the nines now and then. Take loving pride in your appearance and accentuate your feminity through appearance .Perfume, makeupand nice clothes are part of what helps you feel your own feminity more powerfully. 4)Relish your body. The most obviously feminine aspect of any woman is,of course, her body.Embrace your female form.Traditionally,' real woman's figures were worshipped as symbols of a kind of universal feminity and fecundity.Women naturally have higher levels of fat than men do.'The thinnification of women',as if somehow more curves weren't feminine , is crazy.Keep your body fit and healthy, eat well, but love your body as your physical feminine self regardless of the stick-thin catwalk 'ideal'-which is more androgynous than naturally feminine. 5)Feminine grace. Think how we used to describe women we admired for their feminity (which always refers to more than looks)The likes of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly projected their feminity through their grace and elegance.A sense of grace is strongly alinged with feminity. To move gracefully implies making smooth movements rather than jerky, powerful ones.Of course, you might want to move like a lumberjack in the gym or when swimming, but you could enjoy being svelte and smooth in your movements in the cafe. And you dont have to be ultra -feminine and graceful all the time. 6)Relax ,play and be spontaneous. Being feminine doesn't mean always trying to be womanly, being on show, trying to be perfect.Asense of humour, not always taking yourself too seriously, and the capacity to be playful sometimes are very feminine traits and healthy for everyone.Laughter and humour bring sparkle andmake you feel alive and creative. 7)Use self-hypnosis to feel more feminine. Self-hypnosis is a great way to get you feeling highly feminine just before you go out-or any time you want to feel this way.Simply sit or lie down and close your eyes.Let times flow into your mind in which you have felt especially feminine.Remember those moments in detail:How did you feel? What were you wearing? What were you doing? This is important because it shows you what you consider to be feminine.Visualize what you were doing, how you looked and sounded;see yourself as if watching a movie.Next imagine floating into that time and really inhabit that sense of your strong feminity. "Feminity is a central part of who you are and being able to express that will feel wonderful." Chris Antony Mathew B.Sc ,B.Sc (Hons),PhD Associate Professor School of Medicine (Neuroscience) Deakin UNIVERSITY.
MEHENDI ART MEHENDI-The art of painting the body in ornate designs with henna. This mysterious and beautiful art form has been used for centuries to heal,to adorn and to bless. Mehendi art is a temporary form of skin decoration traditionally drawn in delicate, intricate, exquisite patterns on the hands and feet. It has become a trendy alternative to tattoos, with celebrities making this painless art famous. With immense practice and passion in learning the techniques, anybody can excel in being a successful mehendi artist. As the wedding season is cropping up…Jot down these do’s and don’ts for a perfect colour ,as our ultimate goal while applying one ,is definitely the colour, which makes us say” PERFECTO”. Do’s *Leave mehendi for 4-5 hours, even better if you can keep them overnight. *Keep henna paste wet and henna warm (body). *Boil some sugar in water and pour it into a bowl. Add a few drops of lemon juice .After the mehendi dries, dab with this mixture a couple of times. *Heat some cloves in a pan and take the smoke of the clove on your mehendi for a darker colour.(People allergic to clove oil should not do this). *Remove henna gently. *Scrape off the henna crust and apply any sort of balm like vicks, which stimulates the colour development. Dont’s *Do not wash your hands right away.Avoid taking shower for couple of hours post application. *Do not wash your hands with soap; doing so can lead to mehendi fading. *Do not exfoliate skin with henna stain on it. *Do not use a blow dryer to dry the mehendi as it will ruin the design. So, this is how you can attain dark mehendi .Hope you will be following these tips and tricks and your mehendi comes out deep and rich. HAPPY HENNAING!!!!! HASNA BASHEER, MEHENDI ARTIST. CHICK LIT Blame it on Bridget, really. Ever since the world became privy to the personal diaries of this chubby,soulmate-searching working woman,it set off a whole new genre in fiction-books written of women,by women, for women.A million Bridgets and Beckys are spawned across the globe.Chick lit, as it came to be officially recognised, has triumphantly ventured out of Britannia and colonised the world. Sex and the city,The Devil Wears Prada..these books are chatty ,catty and chic on everything under the sun. Chick lit is being bred with great success because these are stories that women can relate to.While clucking up a storm among those who look down upon it,it is also bringing in big bucks and that's no bluff!

ADOLESCENT NUTRITION According to World Health Organization, adolescence are young people between the ages of 10 and 19 years. It is a period of rapid growth and perhaps the last chance to grow. It is a transitional stage in human life – changing from childhood to adulthood. The growth at this period is under the influence of nutrition, genetic factors and hormonal factors. Healthy eating in adolescence is greatly associated with reduced risk for many diseases, including several of the leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes and it is also important for proper growth and development and can prevent health problems such as obesity, dental caries, iron deficiency and osteoporosis. Eating behavior among adolescence is influenced at the individual, peer, family, school, community, and societal levels. Healthy eating in childhood and adolescence providing safe and nurturing environments for our nation’s youth can help ensure that adolescents will be healthy and productive members of society. Here are some tips for healthy eating: • Eating a healthy breakfast is associated with improved cognitive function (especially memory), reduced absenteeism, and improved mood. Eat the breakfast like a ‘king’, lunch like a ‘prince’ and the dinner like a ‘pauper’. • Avoid fasting and skipping breakfast for, it is the ‘brains food’. • Include foods that are made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, ragi, or any other cereal grain. They provide adequate calories, B vitamins and fiber. • Include pulses (green gram, red gram, soy bean) in plenty as they contribute to proteins which are good for growth and development. • Choose a variety of vegetables, including dark green, red, and orange vegetables, legumes (peas and beans), and starchy vegetables. They are rich in micronutrients like iron, calcium, Vitamin A, fiber etc. • Include fruits as whole, rather than drinking fruit juices as they contain added sugars and usually the fiber will be removed. Fruits are rich sources of vitamin A and C which are good for eyes, skin and they contribute to immunity. • Include milk, meat, eggs, fish and dairy products to improve the calcium and protein levels. • Choose low-fat or lean meats and poultry (chicken). Vary your protein routine—choose more fish, nuts, seeds, peas, and beans. • Include more dry fruits like dates, raisins, figs etc. for it is rich in iron and girls need it more to prevent anaemia. • Avoid snacking in front of the T.V. or Computers. Parents are encouraged to limit children’s video, television watching, and computer use to less than two hours daily and replace the sedentary activities with activities that require more movement. • Avoid fast food and junk food consumption. They never provide us with micronutrients like iron, calcium or vitamins. • Avoid drinking soft drinks because they contribute to empty calories. • Drink plenty of water. • Always try to bring variety in the dishes. • Exercise and everyday physical activity should also be included with a healthy dietary plan. Because many sectors of society contribute to adolescent health, safety, and well-being, a collaborative effort that engages multiple factors is necessary. Such joint efforts can also help to promote a more comprehensive approach to addressing adolescent health. Jcrt. Teena Kurian, Kanjirapally Chapter

K I D D I E S MANGLISH !!!!!
Hi Friends, Let me share my views on Manglish! It addresses an important issue in Kerala today. Is it a burning issue or are people simply burning the issue-beats me!!!If the nature of language is to convey to others what we are thinking, feeling or desiring, isn't Manglish doing that?Manglish emerged because of the obstacles of the non-Malaya-lee speaking population.Just like everything is subject to modification, language too is modified and so Manglish is used as a variant today.Manglish in the SMS and blog languages have brought us close! Yes, it often bewilders me when someone who grew up n Kerala fumbles to speak in Malayalam and often with an English accent! Let it be any language,Hindi,Malayalam,Tamil....I am not saying that one should not master any other language.Learn as many languages as you can. What good can any language do if the receiving end doesn't understand? I am a Malaya-lee and I know where my roots lie and I am thankful for that. This language thing is a huge debate and there is never a final conclusion on what makes you a certain identity and what not!The harsh comments could also be from the old fashioned Malayalees who are too hypocritical.Others may not like, few others may consider. I am Nikita Maria and I am proud to be a Malaya-lee. Jclt. Nikita Maria THE FOUR BURNING CANDLES DAY AND NIGHT WITH MARY JANE What is your name? Mary Jane. Where do you live? Down the lane. In a room there were four candles burning. The ambiance was so soft you could hear them talking. The first one said “I am PEACE. However, nobody can keep me lit. I believe I will go out”. Its flame rapidly diminished and went out completely. The second one said “I am FAITH.I am no longer indispensable, so it does not make any sense that I stay lit any longer.” Then a breeze came in and blew out the second candle. Sadly, the third candle spoke in its turn. “I am LOVE.I have not got the strength to stay lit because people put me aside and don’t understand my importance. They even forget to love those who are nearest to them.” And waiting no longer it goes out. Suddenly a child entered the room and saw three candles not burning. “Why are you not burning? You are supposed to stay lit till the end.” Saying this, the child began to cry. Then the fourth candle said “Don’t be afraid, while I am still burning we can relight the other candles. I am HOPE.” With shining eyes, the child took the candle of hope and lit the other candles. The flame of HOPE should never go out from our lives. It can light up FAITH, PEACE and LOVE.
