FT. WORTH
After staying up until 3am to move from one apartment to another, we woke up at 6am to pack the car and high-tail-it out of Houston. The open road -- yeahhh! It took a little over an hour to get through the endless sprawl surrounding Houston, but soon we were passing through smaller towns as we drove north. The first stop on the trip was the Fort Worth / Dallas metro area to visit the Kimbell Art Museum. The museum was built by Louis Kahn, an American architect, and houses a variety of paintings and sculptures in a barrel vaulted space that utilizes beautifully diffused daylight. The building design is known for a well-integrated landscape, which we were able to fully enjoy in the gorgeous weather. In late afternoon we hopped back in the car, grabbed some lunch and headed to Tulsa where we visited Travis and Brittani for a memorable night. The first piece of business once arriving in Tulsa was getting some food... and after trying three difference restaurants, we finally found a nice cafe in the downtown district that served killer wings and nachos.
KIMBELL ART MUSEUM: Trevor checking out a detail at the entrance portico
KIMBELL ART MUSEUM: Entrance sequence, grove of trees that shade the approach. Fantastic use of landscape as an equal partner with the architecture instead of simply a decorative feature.
KIMBELL ART MUSEUM: Daylight diffuser

KIMBELL ART MUSEUM: Exterior view with reflecting pond
KIMBELL ART MUSEUM: Kelly and Abe under the giant span of the entrance portico
TULSA
Brittani took us on a tour of the area that ended at the riverfront park that runs through the city. We attempted to rent bicycles, but a HUGE black widow spider had already called dibs on a few of the bikes so we decided to relax on Brittani and Travis’ porch instead.
KIMBELL ART MUSEUM: Abe relaxing in the shade
The girls called it a night around 3am, but Travis and Trevor headed to the local high school track to explore and practice some sweet moves. After hopping the fence they climbed the goal post and screamed victory... until a gigantic storm rolled in and kicked them off their newfound throne. Before leaving through the gate (yes, it turns out there was an easier way in) Travis attempted a handstand, but only succeeded in a faceplant... and is still bearing the bruises a month later... ouch. On the walk home a random car pulled up and the driver asked our opinion of his brother’s new album while his girlfriend hid her face in the passenger seat. To add to her embarrassment he jumped out of the car and started to dance. We all pulled her out of the car to join us dancing in the rain, and when the song was almost over for the 4th time we headed home to pass out.

We woke up in Tulsa and decided to take advantage of the huge backyard at Brittani and Travis’ house by playing a little frisbee with Abe. Unfortunately, the 10 dachshunds that lived next door were intent on barking us out of the neighborhood...they were so loud that we left the yard to them and opted for an early lunch at the best sandwich joint in town. This stretch of driving through Kansas was by far the longest day on the road...helped by a healthy detour to Topeka (turns out I-35 is not a direct route to Salina). At around 12:30am we decided to pull off the road to find a place to stay the night in Brewster. Sadly, we found nothing vacant...except the Wal-Mart parking lot. We set up camp alongside other RV’s using our handy-dandy sunshade to block the parking lot lights, and then woke up a few hours later to finish the drive to Colorado.
Houston
Once in Denver we got assistance locating Camp Bow Wow, Abe’s wedding weekend accommodations, thanks to Dad. After dropping Abe off for his day-long interview with the other dogs, we drove straight to Boulder to meet up with Cullen and take a nap in his techno-cave bedroom.
KANSAS AT NIGHT: I-70 at dusk, if you look closely you can see the guts of one million bugs on the windshield
KANSAS STORM: Although we weren’t caught in it for long, there was a large storm churning the clouds as we passed through Witchita
KANSAS PLAINS: Although difficult to see in the photograph this was a full rainbow along the side of the road; the cloud movement in Kansas was incredible
KANSAS OIL: Within the corn and sunflower fields of Kansas and Oklahoma it was easy to spot the mechanic movement of the oil pumps

After waking up from our Walmart parking lot induced nap, Cullen took us to his favorite lunch spot in town. He instructed us to grab a table outside because he doesn’t like wearing shirts, and therefore isn’t allowed in the restaurant. The food was delicious... and it was apparent that Cullen was a regular when the waiter commented, “Hey man good to see you again...you know though, you’re our only customer that comes here without clothes on...” Granted it was warm outside, but it seems that Captain Nude (Cullen’s childhood nickname) is still in full-force in Boulder.

Once in Colorado we were constantly on the move exploring the surrounding area with Cullen and his friends. The first two days were filled with rock climbing and a picnic dinner atop the summit of Mount Sanitas. The last day was spent at ‘the creek’ during the afternoon and on a longer climb to the Flatirons - the view into the Rockies was incredible from the top! The only trouble we encountered came on Day 4 when we were rock climbing within the gorge. The last climbs required each of us to pull ourselves over a river using a zip-line for access...Trevor had a scary run-in with the zip-line on the way back...

CLIMBING THE GORGE: Cullen and Trevor enjoying the scenery
CLIMBING THE GORGE: During some down time Kelly scrambled up a rock face to find great views of the gorge and rocks covered with neon lichen
CLIMBING THE GORGE: Kelly climbing a 10-7 using borrowed equipment, huge thanks to Cullen’s friends
CLIMBING THE GORGE: Trevor belaying down the most difficult climb of the day, a 10-10+
CLIMBING THE GORGE: Trevor climbing a 10-8 on the other side of the gorge; this rock face was reached by zip-lining across a river
CLIMBING THE GORGE: Trevor climbing a 10-9 called ‘the crack’
CLIMBING THE GORGE: Cullen surprises Trevor as he is finishing his belay down the rock face...he’s flying?
CLIMBING THE GORGE: While zip-lining back across the river at the end of the day, Trevor forgot to check that his harness was properly secured to his hardware. When he leaned back over the river to begin his trip across it, the carabiner ripped clean off and he fell ten feet directly onto the rocky riverbed below.. back and, paradoxically, head first. Luckily he was wearing a backpack and narrowly escaped getting smacked directly in the head by hitting a little bit of the rest of his body all at once...nothing a little Ibuprofen couldn’t fix...almost.
THE CREEK: Kelly and Trevor having fun in the sun
THE CREEK: Kelly looking for people on the rope swing and / or rafters getting ready to wipe out on the rapids at the dam THE CREEK: Cullen resting on one of the pillars at the dam overlooking the famous rope swing THE CREEK: Kelly, Trevor and Cullen relaxing at the creek
THE FLATIRONS: After spending the early part of the day at the creek, Cullen took us on a hike to the Flatiron faces just outside of town; they can be seen from the highway as you enter Boulder
THE FLATIRONS: We were able to climb around two faces of the Flatirons at sunset which highlighted the amazingly rich colors in the mountains
THE FLATIRONS: Looking toward the Rockies from the Flatirons
THE FLATIRONS: Looking toward the Rockies from the Flatirons
THE FLATIRONS: Abe came on the hike with us through the Flatirons and absolutely loved it; he jumped from rock to rock with no effort at all...we now believe that he might be part mountain goat...

WEDDING
KEYSTONE
Friday afternoon we drove into Denver and dropped Abe off at Camp Bow Wow for the weekend. Then we headed west for Keystone, a ski resort nestled in the mountains where our friends Paige and Patrick were getting married. Once in Keystone we checked into the condo we were sharing with other wedding go’ers and began to explore the resort before saying hello to everyone after the rehearsal dinner later that night.

The weather on Saturday was gorgeous, so we decided we would take a hike in the area before the ceremony. Two of our condomates, Lindsay and Andrea, were able to join us. The wildflowers were in bloom along the entire length of the hiking path, and from the top we were able to get a great view of the Dillon Reservoir below. We returned to the condo mid-day to grab lunch and get ready for summit ceremony. Paige and Patrick exchanged vows in front of a backdrop of forest and snow-capped mountains, and then everyone moved into the lodge for a long night of dancing and celebrating with friends and family! Congratulations to Paige and Patrick!

After a great visit to Colorado we set-off to explore other parts of the country. The first stop on our camping trip was Big Horn National Forest in Wyoming. We arrived at our campsite in utter darkness (something that would become quite common during our trip) and found a great campsite to explore the next morning. Directly adjacent to our tent was a crystal clear creek surrounded by wildflowers and mossy woods.

INTO THE SUN ROAD
TREKKING ACROSS THE DIVIDE
Glacier National Park is one of the most gorgeous and majestic places that we saw along our trip. It is estimated that the glaciers within the park will be completely gone by 2030, so get inspired and take a visit before its name is an anachronism! We were able to spend 3 days in the area, but it wasn’t enough...Kelly is determined to plan another trip in the coming years.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the world’s most spectacular highways. Bisecting the heart of Glacier, this 50-milelong road follows the shores of the park’s two largest lakes and hugs the cliffs below the Continental Divide as it traverses Logan Pass. Numerous scenic turnouts and wayside exhibits allow travelers to stop and enjoy the park at their own pace.

LAKE MCDONALD: Posing with Abe
POLEBRIDGE: Quickly moving clouds just outside Polebridge
DINNER ON THE LAKE: We grilled a lot while camping!
POLEBRIDGE: This small little town, consisting of just one restaurant and a bakery, is where we purchased some delicious bread. Note the sign urging slow driving on gravel roads...SLOW DOWN, PEOPLE BREATHING!
LAKE MCDONALD: Our last stop in Glacier National Park before driving into the National Forest
FLATHEAD NATIONAL FOREST
HUNGRY HORSE DAM: The gateway into the Jewel Basin, an area of Flathead National Forest filled with little jewel-like lakes; the Dam holds back a giant reservoir that ironically has saved a local species of trout from an invasive species. CRAZY DEER: At first sight we were excited to see this deer, but after it began to follow us around we started to get a little worried. First, Kelly and Abe chased after the deer (Kelly barking as loud as she could in order to encourage Abe to do the same) yet the deer continued to return. As our strategy slowly escalated from throwing sticks to hurling rocks, the deer only got slightly more cautious always reappearing behind a tree creeping as close as possible to our campsite.
HOT ASHES: Soon after we extinguished the campfire and fell asleep we were jolted awake by Abe barking at the deer, who returned to the campsite to chomp on campfire ashes. Worried about having a mentally unstable deer as a camp mate, we gathered rocks and waited to ambush the deer when it returned. Once the deer crept back and continued its midnight snack we bolted out of the tent, pelting rocks in the deer’s direction (it is hard to hit a moving target when it is pitch black). After a few rounds of wait and ambush we finally all passed out, exhausted.
WARM POO: Eventually the shadow left and, after waiting frozen for a long time, we eventually exited the tent brandishing our bear spray. After packing up the campsite, we headed back down the trail. Along the WELL, WE GOT RID OF THE DEER PROBLEM, way we passed a BUT I AM PRETTY SURE WE HAVE A BEAR warm pile of bear PROBLEM: When we woke the next morning poop...thankfully we we could see the deer continuing his meal did not encounter through a small opening in the tent. Then, another bear! all of a sudden, the deer bolts and we hear the sound of heavy footsteps approaching, followed by the appearance of a muzzle shaped shadow that pressed against the side of our tent (curiously sniffing the fabric). Staying as quiet as possible, our gaze frantically switched between the ominous shadow and Abe, our eyes pleading with Abe to not bark.
THE DECENT: Abe watching Kelly hike ahead
THE DECENT: View across the valley and onto larger mountains beyond
THE DECENT: Abe needed a little help during the swampy areas
THE DECENT: Most of the hike was through an old burn area of the mountain THE DECENT: Abe followed close to Kelly’s heels

After spending quite a few nights without a shower, we were thankful to pull into Emily’s Seattle neighborhood. Kelly and Emily have known each other for what feels like forever...it was like a piece of home staying with her for a few days! While in Seattle we spent time exploring the city and its diverse neighborhoods, but also managed to organized a camping trip into the Olympic Peninsula with Emily and her boyfriend Eric. Thanks for hosting us you guys!!

After Seattle, we continued our trip down the west coast...our next stop was Portland, Oregon. In Portland we were able to spend time with two of Kelly’s closest college friends, Emily Kappes and Kelly Stock. These girls were amazing...Emily drew incredible maps, gave us a tour of her office and planned great dinners while Kelly gave us mini-tours of the city and took us to one of the best brunches we’ve ever eaten! Our days in Portland were full of sunshine and bike riding. After exploring the city for a day we took a quick tour of the Columbia River Gorge and the Maryhill Overlook.
