In January 2011, I became the Director of the Harvard Institute of Politics (IOP). Previously, I served as Kentucky Secretary of State from 2004-2011. The IOP, located at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, was established in 1966 as a memorial to President Kennedy. The IOP’s mission is to unite and engage students, particularly undergraduates, with academics, politicians, activists, and policymakers on a non-partisan basis to inspire them to consider careers in politics and public service. The Institute strives to promote greater understanding and cooperation between the academic world and the world of politics and public affairs. After practicing law and doing a little bit of business consulting, I was elected Kentucky's Secretary of State in November of 2003 in my first run for political office.
