Celebrate Small Business with the Tri-Cities Chamber
Michael Hind, CEO Tri-Cities Chamber
As always, we’re excited to be participating in BDC’s Small Business Week. To kick off the week of celebration, we’ll be hosting a one-day tradeshow-style event. Not your old-school tradeshow, we invite you to join us in the new era at the second annual Business Showcase. Connect with the community and build business on Tuesday, October 17 from 2:00 – 7:00 PM at the Executive Plaza Hotel Coquitlam.
This high-energy learning and networking event is co-presented by The Business Development Bank of Canada, TD Canada Trust, The City of Coquitlam, and Sharon Perry Inc., Chartered Professional Accountant. Featuring over 50 exhibitors and more than over 500 professionals in attendance this is your opportunity to build relationships with key stakeholders in our community. The Education Lab sponsor, Coquitlam Continuing Education, is hosting four seminars throughout the afternoon. These seminars will provide entrepreneurs and employees the tools they need to be efficient and elevate their business to the next level. From optimizing your Microsoft Outlook skills to aligning your business and personal goals, from small business tax tips to prioritizing challenges and opportunities, the Education Lab will provide new skills and techniques, giving you a competitive edge in the marketplace. At the end of the day, you’ll walk away with numerous new connections, tangible skills, and a better understanding of what the Tri-Cities has to offer. We encourage members of the community at large to stop by and meet their local businesses. The Tri-Cities is the best place to live, work, and play. Join us to find out why. Register today at www.tricitieschamber.com. I hope to see you there!

How do I pay myself - dividends or salary? It’s time for a new car – should I lease or buy? Should I put the vehicle in my company name? My car is wrapped so it’s 100% deductible, right?! My neighbor says my dog is security for my business and I should claim his food and vet bills. Tax rules change often but legitimate and reasonable business expenses should remain relatively constant. Sharon specializes in small business, accounting, and tax. She is passionate about what she does and understands many small businesses don’t know the answers to these commonly asked questions. She explains in a manner that is understandable to all, no intimidation or accounting and tax lingo. This informative session will answer small business owners’ every day questions about what you can write off and what the CRA is looking at.
Looking for easy ways to use your tech time more wisely? Learn a variety of tips and tricks for Microsoft Outlook to help you use your time more effectively. Learn about e-mail, calendar, and task features that will help you in your day-to-day use of Microsoft Outlook. Leave this session with a cheat sheet full of new ways to better utilize your time, skills, and improve your efficiency.
Improve Your Networking Skills 1. Pre-event: Perfect your elevator pitch 2. Approach at least 1 person you don’t know without an introduction 3. Listen and be truly engaged 4. Keep a few questions in your back pocket for that awkward silence
5. Elaborate on your answers with personal anecdotes 6. Share authentic stories about your struggles > accomplishments 7. Ask genuine questions 8. Make introductions

We go beyond typical insurance placement so that your business and its people are fully protected from loss, even setbacks. Hey, just being in business is risky… our process is simple, convenient and stress free. Call us today and see how we can make your life easier.

Ensuring your business goals are aligned with your personal goals by understanding your core values is important in business, as well as work/life balance. How do you articulate your core values and make them come alive for you, your employees, your clients, and your community? And how does this process help you to deliver the outcomes that you desire for your business? Join TD in learning how to align your core values with your business goals and your clients’ goals.
Using a Priority Profile tool, Business Development Bank of Canada will show entrepreneurs how to go about establishing priorities. With real-life examples, business owners will learn how to prioritize all the opportunities and challenges that they may be facing. In learning how to prioritize, entrepreneurs will also be taught how to determine which of these opportunities and/or challenges are the most important to tackle and how to move forward with such initiatives.
