Combatting Chafer beetle in the City of Port Moody The European Chafer beetle is an invasive insect pest. Its larvae feed on grass roots and attract raccoons, birds and other wildlife, causing serious damage to lawns. A healthy lawn is your best defence against Chafer beetle. As you make your way around Port Moody this summer, you’ll see that the City’s grass will be kept at least 3” tall in parks, facilities like City Hall, Kyle Centre and the Arts Centre, as well as on boulevards and medians. We’ve also planted micro clover and fescue in the traffic circle at Eagle Crescent and the median on Parkside Drive. These plantings are a good alternative to grass - stop by and see if you think they would be right for you!

Make every drop count! Our water comes from protected mountain watersheds, and is a valuable resource. Very little of the earth’s water is fresh and available for drinking. Try not to waste it by overwatering lawns or leaving taps running. We tend to double our water use in summer, largely due to lawn sprinkling, powerwashing and other outdoor uses. Be waterwise outdoors and meet current sprinkling restrictions. Find more at www.portmoody.ca

A healthy lawn is your best defence against Chafer beetle. If you have Chafer beetle damage, focus on these six lawn care tips: 1

Rake over damaged turf 4

2

3

Re-seed with droughtresistant grass

Apply top dressing of compost/ topsoil to damaged areas 5

6

3” Keep soil moist until 50% of the seed has germinated

Apply a starter fertilizer

Tips on conserving water during the summer:

Mow once a week and keep grass at least 3” high

Don’t put plastic bags in your recycling cart:

• Put leaves and bark mulch around shrubs and trees to hold in moisture • Water vegetable gardens in the morning, near the roots, and by hand • Install a shut-off valve on your hose so it only runs when in use • Embrace the dry heat by planting tomatoes, basil, beans, melon, eggplant and more • Hardened soil won’t let water through - break up the surface • Catch bath or shower water and use it to water patio planters • Keep a jug of cool water in the fridge, instead of running the tap until it cools.

Personal Training Private Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga is led by Connie Meisner our Certified Therapeutic Restorative Yoga Instructor. Whatever you are experiencing, take it to the mat. Yoga can transform illness to health, injury to strength, and anxiety to joy. Yoga works on all aspects of our being – physical, mental and emotional – bringing us to a place of health, wellness and joyful vitality.

Fitness Outdoor 6am Boot Camp Instructor: Leisha

Instructor: Joni

Restorative Yoga is a gentle therapeutic style of yoga that uses props such as blankets, bolsters and blocks to minimize the amount of work that the muscles are doing in the pose. Once placed in these supported passive postures you will experience the body and mind being grounded, safe and integrated. The poses are held for several minutes and often consist of only 3-5 poses for the private session (60 minutes). The focus of the practice is to restore the central nervous system and the internal systems of the body. Restorative Yoga is a soothing and nurturing practice that promotes the effects of conscious relaxation and helps address specific health challenges. $64.00/One 60-Minute Session Package prices are advertised with Personal Training Packages

Functional Movement Screening Our Certified FMS Personal Trainer will introduce you to Functional Movement Screening (FMS). FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS readily identifies functional limitations and asymmetries which can affect physical activity and performance. Once you complete the movement patterns, a score is given which is used to target and track progress and corrective exercises are prescribed to address possible movement pattern issues.

Get outside and join Leisha and Joni for a fun and effective full body, cardio and strength workout. Outdoor Boot Camp sessions will focus on exercises like push-ups, squats, sprints, and planks that will get you in shape and leave you feeling great. These classes are held outside on Trasolini Turf Field rain or shine. Our experienced instructors offer modifications and adaptations for each exercise to ensure the classes are suitable for ALL FITNESS LEVELS AND AGES. We promise you will have fun, work hard, meet great people and feel the rewards! Monday*/Wednesday/Friday Tuesday/Thursday (Indoor Boot Camp) *Tabata Boot Camp (45 min)
