allery walls, also called moment walls, are one of today’s hottest home decor trends. Gallery walls enable homeowners to create visually appealing groupings of photos, frames, wall art and much more to dress up any room in the house. Gallery walls can make a statement in the living room, add finesse to an entryway or showcase special items along a staircase. One need only do a quick internet search or browse through lifestyle magazines to see examples of gallery walls for inspiration. Gone are the days when large pieces of artwork fill empty walls. Gallery designs add statements and can balance rooms in creative ways. Anyone with a little determination can design a gallery wall.

Experiment with dimensions and levels. Gallery walls need not be restricted to flat photos on a wall. Texture and depth can be used in wall designs. Intersperse shelving, sconces, wooden letters, clocks and more to make the gallery even more eclectic.

Intellectual Properties In our feature home, designed by Lawrence Punsalan, wood was a key element used in the overall design of the exterior and interior of the house. Strategically placed ceiling drops gave drama to the spaces and the incorporation of high ceilings in critical areas provided the sense of space. Ample roof decks were given importance in the house to transfer the inside living space to the outdoors. hile Lawrence Punsalan’s achitectual style is globally inspired, it is rooted in the Pacific North West. Lawrence gained his BS Architecture degree at the University of Santo Tomasin in the Philippines in 2003. After his formal studies, he moved to Vancouver to pursue his career. Over the next few years Lawrence worked with some of Metro Vancouver’s leading architectural firms and earned opportunities to contribute to the designs of the Richmond Olympic Oval Legacy Project, Fort Saint John Hospital, IHA Kelowna General Hospital and the Science World Renewal Project Even with so many world-renowned Vancouver landmarks on his resume, Lawrence finds he is passionate about residential design.

Did your early background contribute to shaping you as an architect? My dad is an architect. Being exposed to his field of work at a very early age did help trigger my interest in architecture. When did you develop an enthusiasm for architecture? I developed my enthusiasm in architecture when I was at grade school. Seeing many scale models of buildings and different drawings around the house made me very curious about architecture. Even when I was a kid, every time I see something being built around my neighbourhood, I stop, look and wonder why things are like that. How would you define your architectural style? I would say I have a modernist style but as an architect, I need to be flexible to my client’s needs.

Are you seeing any particular style requests trending? A lot of people now are leaning and accepting a more modern-style architecture. What qualities do you look for when choosing furniture and accessories? I look at it in this order: usefulness, built quality, texture/colour and price. Creating spaces that are both beautiful and comfortable is something that’s inherent to your entire portfolio. What’s your secret to achieving livable luxury? Bismark Homes photos
A properly and logically planned space is the secret. If you have that in the beginning, everything will follow easily in creating a livable space that you will be proud of having. Bold colour or subtle neutrals? Both — you need to create drama or it will look boring. What does an architect do? Most people will say an architect designs buildings. The right answer is an architect guides a group of people in designing and erecting a structure. What value does an architect bring to a project? Not all projects require an architect but if there is an architect involved, you should expect a better direction on how things are designed and have the right answers on complicated design issues. What’s your advice for someone living in a small home or apartment who wants to maximize their space on a budget? Know your priorities. Do not use things because they just look good and are on sale. Ask yourself what you really need inside your space and look for things that will last for a long time. A famous architect coined the phrase “form follows function,” and everybody should keep that in mind specifically if you have small spaces.

If your home is looking dated, this is a great time to renovate. Breakthroughs in smart technology have made it more affordable to choose great looking options that are functional and more durable. “In Vancouver, many home owners are opening up their floor plans and adding energy efficient windows and doors to make their homes more inviting, cozy and warm,” says Andrew Macintosh, president Highlands Master Builders. He also suggests equipping your home with Smart Home technology to save even more money. A house with products connected by WIFI or Bluetooth can be controlled remotely to optimize functions such as lighting, temperature and security. “You can program your system to turn off lights and lower the heat when you aren’t home,” says Macintosh.
There are other exciting trends in design that don’t involve major structural changes. You can create the illusion of height with ceiling treatments. “Adding ceiling details such as exposed beams, decorative panels, crown moldings or mosaic tiles will make your space appear larger,” he adds. There’s also been a shift from the all-white kitchen to a more visually interesting kitchen with elements of texture and pops of colour. “Little details like mosaic tiles in kitchen backsplashes and entryways really add interest and beauty,” he notes. Winter is the perfect time to think about in door home improvement projects. Large-scale renovations can greatly affect a home’s value but smaller projects can yield impressive results and be completed over the course of a single weekend. If time is of the essence, these weekend or one-day projects may satisfy homeowners’ desires to fix up their homes.
Create an accent wall Painting a focal wall in a home can create a serious impact. The bonus is it will not take as long or require as many materials as painting an entire room. Accent walls frequently feature a bold colour, so decide on placement and tackle this project in less than a day.
Add art Create a gallery on the staircase. Gather and arrange framed photos, artwork or wall accents so that they ascend the wall of a staircase. This creates a designer touch and can dress up an often barren area of wall space.
