Front yard encounter with bear in PoCo Struck by vehicle, a bear charges at a PoCo woman JUSTIN BEDDALL

The Tri-CiTy News

B.C. conservation officers continued a search Thursday morning for a young black bear that charged a Port Coquitlam mother Wednesday night after it had been struck by a car. Conservation officer Clayton Debruin said the woman arrived at her home in the 3000-block of Cedar Drive at around 11 p.m. with her child in the car and, while unloading groceries, she spotted a bear sleeping in the yard.

The bear was spooked and quickly ran away, and the woman took some groceries inside and returned to the car. In the meantime, the bear had been struck by a vehicle and returned to her property and suddenly began to charge her. With an escape route available, it then retreated to a forested area. “The bear must have felt threatened and ‘bluff’ charged her,” said Debruin, explaining that bluff charging is a defensive mechanism where the bear quickly charges toward a perceived threat and then stops to size up the animal or individual. “Generally, black bears are very timid around people and avoid encounters,” he said. see BEARS IN THE HOOD, page 14

100 half marathons... and counting After 22 years, a half marathon milestone for Jor JUSTIN BEDDALL

The Tri-CiTy News

If you saw him on the street, Edmund Jor says, you probably wouldn’t peg him as a prolific runner. Jor stands around 5’4”, has a small frame and doesn’t have six-pack abs. But when it comes to running, he doesn’t stop. On Sunday, the Port Moody resident will run in his 100th half marathon at the BMO Vancouver Marathon, and that comes just three months after he completed his 99th half marathon at a race near Disney World in Florida on his 57th birthday. (He has also completed 35 full marathons, but that’s another story.) Jor never planned on racking up so many miles. But after arriving to Canada from Hong Kong in 1990, something began to happen: weight gain. After putting on 35 lb. with a switch to a Western diet with more dairy than he was used to, he decided to do something about it, so he

Edmund Jor participated in his first half marathon 22 years ago and on Sunday, he will run his 100th. started running. After a pounding the ground for a year, he needed new shoes. He met Paul Slaymaker,

who owns The Runners’ Den in Port Moody and educated him about proper shoes. Jor was still a little reluctant

to fork over more than $100 at the time for quality runners, so Slaymaker said, “Why not run a marathon?”

JUSTIN BEDDALL/THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Jor, in his 30s at the time, had never considered it. “I did the first one and the rest is history,” he said.

His first race the was the Vancouver half marathon 22 years ago. Although he would compete in full marathons, he later began to focus on half marathons, which didn’t require quite as much intense training and commitment. Now 57, he also is a clinic leader at Runner’s Den and works with many first-time runners to get them started on road to achieving their own fitness goals. He finds that newer runners can quickly get up to running 30 minutes continuously. Jor gets tremendous joy when he’s able to unlock the running potential of a rookie runner, advising that training and discipline are key when preparing for the big race day. “Don’t try anything new, stick with what you have been training.” He should know. When asked about the approaching his half-marathon milestone, Jor is more excited about setting a good example for others to stay active. “If I can run, then many of the people I know should be able to run, they can stay active,” he said. “That’s the key message I want to pass along: Stay active and you well see the benefits down the road.” newsroom@tricitynews.com

snow to surf: epic solo fundraiser on sunday JUSTIN BEDDALL

The Tri-CiTy News

Phillip Lopresti has an epic adventure planned for Sunday, the first day of Youth Week 2016. The city of Port Moody youth leader supervisor will embark on a solo fundraising and awareness campaign dedicated to the city’s Youth Employment Training Program. His challenge is this: Start the day with a sunrise ski run atop Whistler Blackcomb and end it with a sunset surf in Tofino on west coast of Vancouver Island. The goal is to raise public awareness about the employ-

lected through Port Moody Parks and Recreation and

100% of the proceeds will be directed to the training program, which is focused on enabling youth to discover their passions and develop career or education plans to achieve their goals. “We have such a huge interest in this program,” said Lopresti, who started the program by securing a $17,000 grant from the Rotary Club. Lopresti said education is the key for young people as they start to pursue their dreams and goals. The youth employment training programs gives successful high school candidates a chance to receive education and training needed to get jobs in the aquatics or children services

departments. The cities of PoMo and Port Coquitlam both provide training through their parks and rec departments. Program participants are selected for training based on their needs and existing barriers. “I truly believe in the power of education and its ability to serve as a vehicle of change, moving youth from a place of great adversity to one of great achievement and pride,” he said in an email. A volunteer firefighter, second lieutenant with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and occasional triathlete, he said planning the fundraiser was a bit of logistical challenge but says

with the sunrise at 5:50 a.m. and sunset at 8:50 p.m., there will be enough time for a ski, drive, ferry ride, quick stop at Cathedral Park and surf at Tofino. Also participating in the adventure are researcher Liam Peel from UBC, Julian Deschutter from Chasing Sunrise, and Michelle Hill a graduate of the youth employment training program. Lopresti plans to document his entire journey on social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (follow Sea to Sky Youth Coaching). DIANE STRANDBERG The Tri-CiTy News

The Coquitlam Teachers’ Association (CTA) president says School District 43 officials are not to blame for approving a budget Tuesday that will only partly restore services that were cut in previous years. Charley King told The TriCity News that SD43 continues to be underfunded — it is ranked 58th out of 60 school districts in per-pupil funding — but still managed to add some staff, including a psychologist and speech and language pathologist. King said teachers are “frustrated by the whole situation” and noted there was little to comment on this year’s budget, which will be used to run schools for the 2016/’17 year. “I don’t want to diminish the efforts to put more money into services — there are going

CHARLEY KING, CTA to be more teachers and that’s good — [but] I don’t think parents should be breathing a sign of relief that we are back to where we are,” King said. Teachers had sought more library services, more teachers to support children with special needs and counsellors for students dealing with anxiety and other mental health issues. But the $290-million budget passed by trustees did not include more services other than those added to the draft budget including: about a dozen classroom teachers, more lunch-

time supervisors, increased administration time for principals and vice-principals, a school maintenance position and a technology co-ordinator. The budget also includes $52 per student more provincial funding and additional funds from fees foreign students pay to offset a slight decline in enrolment and a requirement to pay off $1.5 million in operating debt and absorb $1.4 million to meet provincial expectations in administrative savings. But board chair Judy Shirra said in a press release the district did what it could with funding and it continues to have one of the highest sixyear graduation rates in the province.

RCMP DISCIPLINE

Cop who was suspended with pay has resigned GARY MCKENNA The Tri-CiTy News

A Coquitlam RCMP officer who was suspended with pay four years ago after his sexually explicit photos turned up on a fetish website has quit the force. Cpl. James Brown was expected to attend a disciplinary hearing scheduled for May 2 but the Mounties say he resigned before the meeting could take place. “As the date for a hearing approached, the individual submitted his discharge papers, which I immediately signed,” said Craig Callens, the deputy commissioner and commanding officer of the RCMP in B.C., in an email. “His career with the RCMP is over.” Several hearings were scheduled and postponed since the photos came to light in 2012

and Brown has been collecting a paycheque for the duration of the suspension. Callens said legislative changes in 2014 made it easier for the RCMP to deal with disciplinary matters in a more timely fashion but the Brown case was a “legacy file.” “To be clear, I have been seeking the dismissal of Cpl. Jim Brown since the conclusion of the investigation,” he said. “The hearing dates have been adjourned for reasons beyond my control but are a reflection of some of the challenges we faced under the old RCMP Act.” In 2012, several photos of Brown posted to the membersonly online fetish site Fetlife were sent to the media along with transcripts of online conversations. The photos included several of Brown engaged in various S&M poses while wearing his RCMP-issued boots.

Brown has launched civil suits against the people he alleges accessed and sent the photos four years ago and, more recently, against the Pacific Newspaper Group, which publishes the Vancouver Sun and The Province newspapers. He has also filed suit against Google Inc. to obtain subscriber information regarding an RCMPrelated blog and an email address he alleges contained defamatory statements. Last week, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart told The TriCity News that Brown’s paycheques did not come directly from the city but from a broader E-Division account. But he said Brown was on a “four-year paid holiday” and urged the RCMP to either “complete the investigation or abandon it and reinstate him.” @gmckennaTC

Shelter is home for aging mom and daughter They can pay rent but can’t find a place to live GARY MCKENNA

The Tri-CiTy News

Last Christmas, Wendy Pallidor and her mother, Bev Rackett, celebrated the holidays in their rancher-style home in Delta. Today, only five months later, the pair find themselves living in the dorm room of the emergency shelter at 3030 Gordon Ave. in Coquitlam, still stunned at the turn of events that led them to homelessness. “No one’s mother or grandmother should be here,” Pallidor said outside the doors of the shelter. “You can’t rent in the Lower Mainland.” Things started to go badly for the two women when their landlord decided to renovate the home they were living in for his own family. Both Pallidor and Rackett have mobility issues and are on

ings into storage and moved into a hotel for a few weeks before eventually moving to the shelter on March 15. They are on lists to be put into subsidized housing but will have to call the shelter home while they wait for a spot. “On the first [of May], we have a $300 storage bill,” Pallidor said. “We would much rather be putting that towards rent.” With a combined income of $2,500 a month, she said they do not have many options when it comes to market rental. When they do find a listing they can afford, those are often snapped up quickly, Pallidor added. “We went to an interview last night,” she said. “Fifteen people looked at one twobedroom apartment… There is not enough housing.” Ideally, she said she would like to stay in the Tri-Cities or Langley, where she has family, but is willing to expand the parameters if something comes available. Sean Spear, an associate

director of RainCity Housing, which oversees the shelter, said cases like that of Pallidor and Rackett are becoming more common. Many people do not realize how close they are to homelessness, he added, noting there are many cases where a minor change in someone’s life can cause a chain of events that lead them to living on the streets or in a shelter. “You talk to many people who are like, ‘Wow, two years ago, I owned a place,’” Spear said. “They were in a perfect looking scenario and they think ‘How the hell did I end up here?’” With changing demographics, Spear said more seniors are expected to take advantage of 3030 Gordon and other shelters like it. “It can happen at any age,” he said. “You can imagine the things that can fall through — whether it is family supports or financial — that can lead someone to go into a shelter or transition housing.” gmckenna@tricitynews.com @gmckennaTC

2.27% TAX HIKE IN COQUITLAM

Port Moody residents can expect their property tax bills to go up by about $150 this year. At Tuesday’s meeting, council passed first three readings of the five-year financial plan, which calls for a tax increase of 4.98%, or $3,104 for home with the average assessed value of$643,000. The amount is nearly 2% more than the 2015 increase, which was 3.11%. “It’s at least 2% higher than I would like it to be but it’s hard to go through the budget and see where we could have cut anything,” Mayor Mike Clay told The Tri-City News. “We’re feeling the impacts of these facility assessments and the cost of fixing up our buildings and assets that I surmise were not being maintained to the standard they should have been.” Contributing to the 4.98% increase are salaries (2.96%), the asset renewal levy (1%) and new services (1.34%), which includes new positions, increased service hours and other services such as grass cutting, landscaping and cleaning services that are being brought in-house. Another 0.74% comes from the police budget for a total tax rate increase of 5.73%. With a shift in some costs to the utility budget, the overall increase stands at 4.98%. The utility bill, which includes garbage and recycling,

The average Coquitlam homeowner will see a 2.27% increase in their property taxes this year. While the city’s financial plan was passed in December, the city approved its tax rates for 2016 Monday night, noting the owner of a home valued at $690,000 will pay a levy and utility rate of approximately $3,060. Under the city’s tax shift policy, which aims to balance out the rate for business property owners, commercial and industrial land holders will see an increase of 1.64%. The tax rate item was carried unanimously at Coquitlam council Monday night (councillors Mae Reid and Dennis Marsden were absent). water and sanitary services, is going up by $73, to $1,037, while the storm drainage fee will grow by $11, to $64 this year. The facility assessments will add up to $10.5 million in new debt to pay for: • civic centre repairs, $5.2 million; • recreation complex repairs, $3.575 million; • arts centre repairs, $700,000; • Heritage Mountain Boulevard bridge, $500,000; • and contingency, $500,000. Those projects will bring PoMo’s debt load up to $564 per capita this year, up from $293 last year, with payments expected to continue until 2043. Clay said the projects, some of which are life safety issues, are essential and the city would be negligent if they weren’t tackled now. “The mistake prior to 2004

was trying to drive that [debt] number down because it looked good, but we were not properly funding the maintenance of our civic facilities,” he added, noting some buildings, such as Kyle Centre, are in worse shape than expected because of the lack of maintenance. Additional capital projects in the financial plan include the library renovation ($355,000), Inlet Park fields upgrade ($5.8 million) and the landfill closure ($2.6 million). A federal grant will cover $1.4 million of the Barnet Highway landfill closure, which is expected to be repurposed as the new city works yard and possibly create new industrial land. Council must pass the tax rate and financial plan bylaws by May 15, with taxes due to the city by July 4.

mages of destruction caused by earthquakes strike fear in the hearts of many. But once those images fade, what then? At least we know School District 43 is taking action. Next Wednesday, the district is holding an emergency release drill that will get schools quake-ready while also reminding families to make sure they have a back-up plan in place. The event is being held in conjunction with Emergency Preparedness Week, May 1 to 7. Recent earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador are reminders that people living in the quake-prone Ring of Fire — including the Lower Mainland — need to be prepared, with communication plans in place, responsible adults to pick up children from school, emergency supply kits, and water and food enough to sustain a family for 72 hours. People have been warning about B.C.’s big quake for decades but that’s no reason to get lulled into complacency. It doesn’t hurt to update emergency plans. Being unprepared could truly be a disaster.

A 3-step plan for saving Tri-Cities’ bears AS I SEE IT

was very saddened to hear of the shooting of a mother bear and two cubs earlier this month in Port Moody. So early in the year and already we have had to kill almost half the number of bears in the Tri-Cities that were killed in all of 2015. Not a good start. A work colleague was telling me of four bears on his street on Westwood Plateau having a field day with the bins on his garbage day. He asked me what could be done. After giving it some thought, I said in order to severely the reduce the chance of any more bears being shot this year, there are three levels of responsibility that need to be in place: local government must enforce bylaws involving waste set-out times, improve city or contracted garbage pick-up timing in sensitive bear areas and good management by residents of their waste by keeping it secure. And three things need to be done on a regular and consistent basis year in and year out to minimize the chance of encounters: First, each of the cities must regularly spot check areas to ensure residents are complying with set-out

TC

times established in their bylaws: 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. on pick-up day. Warnings and fines need to be issued as required to manage this part of the equation. The longer the waste is left unsecured on the street, the greater the chance a bear will have to access it. Second, in areas near green space and forest interface areas where there is a greater likelihood of bears being present, trash collection should start as early as possible and the green waste should be the first bin that is picked up. If the waste sorting by the residents is being done according to the best practices local governments have repeatedly publicized, there should be very little of interest to attract a bear to the recycling and garbage. All the items a bear would like to eat would be in the green bin and, if this is removed early, temptation is gone and there is no chance of a reward for the bear. The third part of this plan lies squarely in the hands of Tri-City residents. Everyone needs to ensure they are managing their waste, sorting as required and having it secured in a shed or a garage where possible with the bin locks in place for those areas of the Tri-Cities that

have them. In addition, where space permits, decaying food items like meat and vegetables that have the potential to give off odour should be placed in the freezer until the morning of pick-up and then placed in the green bin. None of this information is new nor should come as a surprise to anybody. But if we want to avoid any more unnecessary killing of bears, these things must be in place every day of every week all year long. Doing so on a consistent basis will minimize bears getting into trouble with household waste. If the residents, cities and garbage haulers each do their part, the window of opportunity for a bear to access our household waste will be severely curtailed. As long as we continue to develop massive areas of forested land and green space, we can expect to see more bears displaced from their home territory and looking for new food sources. Don’t let the new food be our household waste. Let’s all work together for the good of bears and humans.

TRI-CITY HERITAGE

Coquitlam wants a heritage space The Editor, It was great to see so many at Coquitlam’s Heritage Symposium on April 16 and to hear so many good speakers. For the first time in many years, I felt hopeful regarding our dream of preserving Old Riverview. Coquitlam needs a museum and we have one on the Riverview Hospital site. It’s a living museum that takes in the entire remaining 244 acres. It has been written and talked about before by heritage advocates and we came close to talking about it at the symposium at the Evergreen Cultural Centre. There are historic buildings on the Riverview Hospital site to look after the archives and some of the finest trees in Canada that can do their part. One only has to walk through the trees to feel the energy. Riverview Horticultural Centre Society has been advocating for the preservation of this site for over 20 years. So many now speak of a wellness centre for those who need one and for everyone a living museum for us to stroll through to feel uplifted.

Participants in the April 16 Heritage Symposium (right) at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre affirmed their desire for the city to have a designated heritage space, writes one letter writer. And the Riverview Hospital grounds are that space, writes another. I tell everyone to write to Premier Christy Clark and say “no” to market housing on this site. Riverview is desperately needed and could never be replaced. Norma Gillespie, Coquitlam

HERITAGE WANTED

The Editor, The Coquitlam Heritage Society recently hosted an exciting and edifying Coquitlam

Heritage Symposium, which concluded with a great interest, from many of the people present, in a designated-heritage space in the city. That said, given the backdrop that a designated heritage space continues to remain a desire of city fathers as Coquitlam celebrates its 125th birthday, one may have reasonably assumed that the symposium participants — which included

a sprinkling of municipal and provincial politicians — would have approached the symposium in a gloomy, curmudgeonly state of mind. Well, some may have. But after hearing the first, worldclass presenter, Tim Willis, a specialist in exhibition planning and visitor experience, and seeing his photos of museums from around-the-world, the audience’s mood quickly shifted

to one of ebullience. That participant elation continued to escalate as Mr. Willis’ visual presentation demonstrated how designated heritage space enhances civic tourism, benefiting residents as well as visitors. Candace Matelic, in her evocative presentation, went on to emphasize that “consumers value memorable experiences more than goods and services.” She made it ever so

clear that memorable heritage experiences are immeasurably enhanced when displayed in an architecturally exciting space — a fact now understood, worldwide, as absolutely essential. All of the presenters, in attempting to identify our defining heritage characteristic, revealed, overwhelmingly, that it was a designated heritage space. So, too, the speakers emphasized that “heritage” in general remains a key challenge for us all. We cannot allow it to be depreciated or trifled with. And as the city of Coquitlam celebrates its quasquicentennial, we are reminded, once more, that a designated heritage space remains the quintessence or soul of any official heritage plan, and, in Coquitlam’s case, a goal. Don Cunnings, Coquitlam

Bears in the ’hood? ‘Always a reason’ continued from front page

After the incident, RCMP and conservation officers swept the area for hours in search of the bear. “We did patrols but were unable to locate the bear,” said RCMP spokesman Const. Jamie Phillipson. Early Thursday morning, conservation officers resumed

the search but found no signs of the bear. Debruin said it was likely a good sign that the bear was no longer in the area, meaning the injuries it suffered weren’t too severe. He warned residents that bears are coming out of torpor — brief hibernation — now and are on the prowl for food. “They are looking for a easy

meal. They are opportunistic and can be impulsive.” That’s why it’s critical to properly manage bear attractants, including garbage, compost, bird feeders and barbecues. “[There’s] always a reason the bear is there,” Debruin said. newsroom@tricitynews.com @TriCityNews

PORT MOODY

OCP: OK; council: No SARAH PAYNE The Tri-CiTy News

A proposed six-storey condo building at the corner of Clarke and Moody streets was rejected by Port Moody council this week even though it adhered to policies set out in the city’s official community plan. All but two council members — Mayor Mike Clay and Coun. Diana Dilworth — voted against the rezoning application after a public hearing at which about 20 people, all but one of whom lives in a neighbouring building, spoke against the proposed development. “The proposed building is out of scope with the rest of the neighbourhood,” said Nick Haltigin, who suggested buildings should cascade from St. Johns down to the waterfront instead of some being higher than those behind them. Other speakers noted they’d paid a premium for their view from the fifth and sixth floors of the Station building and were “promised” that nothing higher would be built in front of them. Aragon Properties’ proposed four- and six-storey development at 2713-2725 Clarke St., which would be located less than 250 m from the Moody Centre SkyTrain station, required a zoning change to allow an additional storey but meets the six storeys allowed in

the OCP, which aims to create pockets of higher-density developments close to the Evergreen Line. A parking variance was also requested to reduce the required residential parking stalls from 156 to 130 (8.3%), with the caveat that policies in the OCP allow the city to consider such decreases for developments close to transit nodes. Mayor Clay said he was frustrated with the result, saying the proposal was in keeping with the goals set out in the OCP. “I don’t know what we’re supposed to do when somebody comes in with an application that meets everything we’ve described in the OCP and council turns it down,” he said. And while he acknowledged that residents of the neighbouring buildings — the fourand five-storey Station building on Spring Street and the fourstorey Lighthouse to the west — objected to the potential loss of views, Clay said people can’t expect a vacant lot to stay that way or that city policies won’t evolve and change over the years. “What are they going to do if the [Flavelle] mill is redeveloped and something there blocks their view?” he told The Tri-City News. “Twenty people came to the public hearing, all but one lived in one of the two buildings that touch this building. The other 34,980 people of the city don’t seem to be

objecting to this.” He fears the decision will add to challenges the city is already facing in attracting the kind of new growth that council seemed to want out of the OCP — a vibrant play to live, work, shop and recreate. “We have a lot of developers out there who won’t deal with Port Moody because they don’t understand what we’re doing,” Clay said. “We say one thing and then we do another.” The proposal had received support from the city’s advisory design panel in September 2015 and the land use committee in February 2016. A staff report presented in March supported the application, noting it would meet the city’s objectives of enhancing Spring Street, providing open public space and improving the pedestrian environment. “We thought we had a successful project that met the criteria of the OCP so we’re disappointed council didn’t see it that way,” said Aragon’s David Roppel. “We thought we were following the rules and following the directions from staff and all the policies that council has endorsed in the past, including the OCP.” Roppel said his team would be studying comments from the community, council and city staff and would take those back to the drawing board. spayne@tricitynews.com @spayneTC

Bats: They’re all around us, and they’re at risk GREEN SCENE

ELAINE GOLDS

B

ats are one of our more mysterious and most misunderstood groups of mammals in B.C. Even though they are all around us, these intriguing creatures of the night are rarely seen by many people. With 16 species of bats in B.C., these animals play an important role by keeping many insect pests such as mosquitoes under control. And now, bats have been placed at risk of extinction by a new disease, the so-called white nose syndrome that is sweeping across North America. There are two main groups of bats: a tropical family, including the large flying foxes that pollinate many tropical fruits; and a group of smaller bats in temperate climates that are insect-eaters. (And then, of course, there are a few oddballs among bats, including ones in the tropics that catch fish and vampire bats, which borrowed a trick

KIYOSHI TAKAHASHI PHOTO

The Townsend’s big-eared bat has especially prominent ears on which the tragus (which is thought to play a fundamental role in echo-location) can be seen as well as a claw on its thumbs. from mosquitoes and suck blood as their food source. While vampire bats may account for the fear some people have of bats, they are found only in tropical and sub-tropical parts of Central and South America.) B.C. has the greatest diversity of bats in all of Canada. In fact, eight of the species found here are found nowhere else in Canada. Bats are the only group of mammals capable of sustained flapping flight, a feature they share with birds. Other mammals, such as flying squirrels,

can glide but they cannot truly fly. Two other important adaptations of bats are echolocation, which enables them to find food in total darkness, and their ability to hibernate each winter. Bats have a modified forelimb for flight with a hairless membrane that stretches over the fingers and arms. They have a second smaller membrane between their hind legs and tail. A bat cannot easily walk on its weak hind limbs, which are modified for hanging upside down, its usual resting position.

Bats produce a high-pitched sound for echo-location that cannot be heard by most people — except young children, who can hear higher frequencies than adults. Bats’ ears are specially adapted to pick up these sounds, which bounce off objects such as prey. Thus, their ears are usually large and feature a fleshy lobe at the entrance called a tragus, which is thought to play a fundamental role in echo-location. Echolocation is thought to work at distances up to 10 m; beyond that, bats rely on their vision for flight. Bats roost in trees, especially in mature forests around water where their prey is usually located. Some bats are camouflaged to blend in with their surroundings — the western red bat looks like a dead leaf and the hoary bat resembles lichen. Their main food is flying nocturnal insects. Experiments conducted on little brown myotis showed these bats could eat up to 10 mosquitoes per minute. Bats mate just before hibernation in the fall. By April, most arrive at their summer roosting areas. The females have a delayed implantation of their egg so that their young are born in June or July. Most bats give birth to only a single pup, which can live for up to 30 years. Female bats seek especially warm places with tem-

peratures around 40 C where they can rear their babies in large groups, hence their predilection for sites such as attics. By late August, most bat pups will be able to fly. Depending on the weather, bats return to their hibernation sites in late October or November. The details of the life cycle of many bat species in B.C. remains unknown and additional studies are now urgently needed. White nose syndrome (WNS) was first reported in eastern North America in 2006. Accidentally introduced from Europe, it is a fungus that grows on the nose and kills many bats by interfering with breathing during hibernation. Bats afflicted with WNS are thus aroused from hibernation many times; this consumes energy and depletes their vital reserves so they die of starvation before the hibernation season has ended. So far, almost six million bats have been killed by WNS and many colonies have been completely eliminated. Originally, it was thought the long distance from the east coast would offer some protection to bats in B.C. as it would delay the arrival of the disease and, thus, allow scientists to develop a way to control or cure it. But shockingly, in March, it was reported a dead bat with WNS was found only 50 km east of Seattle. Until

then, the only affected areas were not much further west than the western edge of the Great Lakes. Locally, both Minnekhada and Colony Farm regional parks in Coquitlam host significant maternal rearing sites for bats. At Minnekhada in 1995, Burke Mountain Naturalists member Kiyoshi Takahashi (whose photo accompanies today’s column), discovered a rare species of bat, the Townsend’s big-eared bat. In 2014, he estimated the size of this colony had grown to 180 bats. At Colony Farm, one of the heritage buildings hosts maternal colonies of Yuma myotis bats and, possibly, other species. Last year at Colony Farm Regional Park, volunteers counted more than 500 bats at dusk. It is utterly shocking these colonies and bats throughout B.C. have now been placed at risk from WNS, especially when so little is known about these species, including the locations where they hibernate during winter. This is the gravest risk bats in B.C. have ever faced. Elaine Golds is a Port Moody environmentalist who is president and conservation chair of the Burke Mountain Naturalists, and member of the boards of the Colony Farm Park Association and the Port Moody Ecological Society.

Hospice Hike raises cash for, awareness of end-of-life care 14th annual Hike for Hospice takes place on Sunday JUSTIN BEDDALL Tri-CiTy News

The 14th annual Hike for Hospice takes place May 1 and at least one Tri-City politician taking part has a bit of history with the society that runs it. Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay has participated in nearly every one of annual pledge-driven fundraising hikes hosted by PoMo-based Crossroads Hospice Society. Back when the society was getting started, Clay, whose background is in IT, volunteered to connect its computer network. While volunteering, Clay got a chance to chat and visit with many patients. “I went in there to hook up some computers and ended up learning an awful lot more about a hospice and end-oflife care and why it is important, and seeing how it affected all of the families,” he said. A few years ago, as his own mother was entering the last few weeks of her life, she went to Crossroads Inlet Centre Hospice. “When I was there with my mom and saw how unbelievably caring and compassionate and how well they treated my mom and our family, it was like

This year’s PoCo Alzheimer’s walk will honour Doug Charles, a Coquitlam artist who struggled with the disease during his final years. ‘wow.’ It’s the little things that make all the difference.” When Clay participates in the annual hike, he said he goes through a range of emotions. “It helps me. I think get through my personal loss when you look around and think every one of these people has a personal connection. Everybody else has a story, everybody else has a family member and everybody else has gone through this at some point in their life, and we’re all there for the same reason, which I think is to remember, reflect and give to the charity that supports the organization that was so important to all of us. “You are there because you

have gone through the same thing,” said Clay, who often MCs the event.

THE DETAILS

Neither team managed to find the back of the net when the Tri-City Express played the Vancouver Black Hawks to a 0-0 finish in Tier 1 Greater Vancouver Junior Field Hockey action last week. However, the Express posted a win last Sunday, downing the West Vancouver Penguins 3-1. The Express are currently in second place in their division with a 2-0-1 record, one game behind the 3-0 West Vancouver Panthers.

BCHL HOCKEY

Fabbro up for defensive honours Coquitlam player in the running for Top Defenceman

Coquitlam hockey player Dante Fabbro is getting some national attention for his stellar play with the Penticton Vees last season. The 17-year-old blueliner, who scored 14 goals and 53 assists in 45 games this year, is in the running for the Top Defenceman Award. The 67point season puts Fabbro at the top of the scoring list for all BCHL blueliners and his 31 power-play markers helped the Vees to a league-leading 30.7% succes rate with the man

advantage. He’s been nominated for the honour along with Brinson Pasichnuk of the AJHL’s Bonnyville Pontiacs, Brett Orr of the MJHL’s Portage Terriers, Patrick Kudla of the OJHL’s Oakville Blades and Jonathan Fillion of the QJHL’s Collège Français de Longueuil. The nomination caps a busy year for the young hockey player. He helped Team Canada West win a gold medal last December during the World Junior A Challenge, while committing to Boston University for next season. He is also expected to be a first-round selection in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in June.

Fabbro is not the only Penticton player to receive a nomination from the CJHL. Teammate and goaltender Zach Driscoll is in the running for the Top Goalie Awards, putting his .933 save percentage and 1.90 goals-against average against fellow nominees Matthew Murray of the AJHL’s Spruce Grove Saints, Nathan Park of the MJHL’s Portage Terriers, Andrew Masters of the OJHL’s Georgetown Raiders and Jack Burgart of the SJHL’s Weyburn Redwings. Driscoll went 21-4 this season and is committed to St. Cloud State University, where he is expected to play this fall.

Four Tri-City teams have punched their tickets to the AAA high school girls soccer Fraser Valley playdowns. Dr. Charles Best locked up the number one seed in the division after defeating Centennial 5-1 Wednesday night and will enter the playoffs with a 6-0-1 record. Meanwhile Riverside secondary, who downed Terry Fox 2-1 Wednesday, has secured the fourth playoff seed. A game between the current third-place Centennial Centaurs and the secondplace Heritage Woods Kodiaks on Monday will decided the second and third seed. The Kodiaks have the unique distinction of being the only team to defeat Best during the regular season. The Port Moody club accomplished the feat on Monday night, when they outscored the Coquitlam team 2-1. Riverside also played on Monday night, shutting out the Gleneagle Talons 1-0. sports@tricitynews.com

Two golds for Hemlock ski team Despite crash, Voss wins medals at Mt. Washington

Port Moody skier Katrina Voss won a pair of gold medals in both the dual slalom and the

single pole slalom race during the Zone Finals at Mount Washington last week. Despite a crash during the dual slalom, Voss was able to get back up and finish the race on one ski, taking first place in the process. She was not the only mem-

ber of the Hemlock Ski team to crack the top ten during last weekend’s series of races. Lena Liljedahl, also of Port Moody, finished the under-16 slalom race in ninth place, while Delta skier Nate Rowher took fourth in the under-12 slalom race.

Meanwhile, Patricia Safar, also of Delta, finished in sixth and eighth place in both of the under-12 slalom races she competed in on Mount Washington. The race marks the final event of the ski season.

Lin bros. also have spot in Moncton event

Port Coquitlam badminton player Daryl Yang showed everyone why he is the No. 1 ranked player in the province last weekend. The Shuttlesport Badminton Academy member won both the singles and doubles events during the 2016 B.C. Provincial Championships in Richmond in the under17 category. It was the sixth and seventh provincial title for the young player and his coach Al Mawani said they were some of his strongest wins.

“He was dominant throughout the tournament,” Mawani said. Yang, who has not lost a singles match in his age category this season, will now prepare for the upcoming national competition which will be held in Moncton next month. Coquitlam Badminton brothers Nestor and Paxton Lin will also be competing in the nationals in New Brunswick. Nestor won gold in both the under-13 singles and doubles events, while Nestor won two silver medals in the under-15 mixed doubles and male doubles. He also won a bronze medal in the male singles event.
