Coq. ‘swatter’ pleads guilty 17-year-old has now admitted to 23 offences JANIS WARREN
The Tri-CiTy News
A Coquitlam teen who prompted numerous “swatting” incidents last year on families around Canada and the U.S. pleaded guilty last week to a dozen more charges. The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified under a publication ban because of his age, has now admitted to a total of
23 offences of extortion, public mischief, criminal harassment, uttering threats and breach of recognizance. In a day-long sentencing hearing at Port Coquitlam provincial court last Friday, Crown prosecutor Michael Bauer outlined how the teen had terrorized mostly young, female gamers and their parents, in B.C., Minnesota, Utah, Arizona, Ohio and California. He had a consistent pattern of trying to connect with the online gamers — many of them fans of the game League of Legends. But when they denied his requests, he shut down their
internet access, posted their personal information online, repeatedly called them late at night and contacted the police in their hometown, posing as someone else. Often, he would tell the police he was holding a family hostage, had napalm bombs or had killed someone in the house. He would demand a ransom, order a SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team — hence the term “swatting” — to show up with a police helicopter, or say he would kill any law enforcement official who intervened, Bauer said. The teen, who went under
the same social media handle (or a variation of it), would also retaliate by posting a target’s parents’ dates of birth, and social insurance and credit card numbers on the web, and had pizza which they had not ordered delivered to their home. Bauer spent more than an hour outlining the Arizona case, in which a young woman was forced to withdraw from her semester at the University of Arizona in Tucson because she became anxious after the teen relentlessly pursued and threatened her and her parents.

The Inlet Centre Fire Hall will be throwing open its truck bay doors later this month and welcoming the public for its second annual blood donor clinic. Last year’s was held at Port Moody city hall in the Galleria, but with the new fire hall up and running Chief Remo Faedo said it was a great opportunity to have people check out the new digs and do something good at the same time. “We see the need for blood donor clinics first hand,” Faedo said, noting a car accident victim can need up to 50 units of blood. “The need is constant and it doesn’t stop, it really doesn’t.” PoMo Fire Rescue administrator Natalie Hayton has organized the clinics, bringing the idea with her from a previous job in Vancouver, saying with money tight for many families, donating one’s blood or time is a manageable option for charitable giving. “It’s easy to do and it’s easy to give,” she said. Last year’s PoMo clinic exceeded their target, drawing 100 donors (Canadian Blood Services was able to collect from 88 of them), and this year they’re hoping to produce 76 units of blood. So far about 60% of the appointment slots have been booked for the May 28 clinic, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. • To book your appointment call 1-888-2DONATE or visit blood.ca. spayne@tricitynews.com @spayneTC

MOSSOM HATCHERY REBUILD
Marriage of nature & technology Technology and green initiatives make hatchery sensitive to the environment DIANE STRANDBERG The Tri-CiTy News
C
ougars, bears, raccoons, dogs, deer and a river otter have all visited the new Mossom Creek Hatchery in Port Moody, according to web camera footage, and now it’s time for two legged creatures to get a look at the new building and education centre. This Saturday, May 23, the Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society (BIMES) is inviting the public for tours of the hatchery that was rebuilt after a December 2013 fire. Visitors will get an up-close look at the coho smolts swimming in the Capilano troughs, learn about hatchery processes and the latest technology to ensure the health of fish. There will also be crafts for kids and refreshments. “We want people to come out and look around and see what we’ve got here,” said Ruth Foster, one of the cofounders of the Mossom Creek Hatchery, which got its start as a Centennial secondary school project in 1976. And there is a lot to see: state of the art sensors measure temperature and water quality, an astronomic timer turns lights on and off in the hatchery by gauging light levels outside, mimicking earth’s daylight cycles, and web cams monitor wildlife at the hatchery and fish in the creek. The web cams have already proven to be useful, recording visits of bears, a sea otter and even a trio of three cougars that hung out at the hatchery for a period last Wednesday. “What a bonus to be able to show people what goes on here,” said Pat Dennett, the volunteer project manager who oversaw saw construction for the project and whose experience in the construction industry enabled the society to get good deals or fully donated materials and services from contractors. (For a full list of building “heroes” visit www.mossomcreek.org.) Construction started only last fall, after months of planning, but the two-storey building came in on budget at about $1.2 million. Fish hatchery operations have already begun and an occupancy permit was finalized in April. The organization is still looking for funding to help it run the operation and promote education opportunities. “Now our focus is on the operation side, that’s our interest going forward,” Dennett said. Now though, Dennett has many other things on his mind as he follows through on the

Volunteer project manager Pat Dennett took The News on a tour of the new Mossom Creek hatchery and education centre, which now has a full kitchen, web cams tracking wildlife outside the building and technology to control lighting and measure water quality. Last week landscapers dug out a pond area beside the creek. final details and finishing touches, with the support of his volunteer team, including Mel Steemson and Neil Laffra, BIMES president Kyle Pilon, Rod MacVicar, Tracy Green and many others. A wetland with water supplied from the creek, funded in part by Vancity with support from Burnco and No Limit Landscaping, will allow children to watch tiny pond creatures. It should be nearing completion and might be ready in time for the open house. On the main floor the hatchery is open for visitation, with its incubation room and tanks for fish. A handicapped accessible path takes visitors to the second floor, where there is an
education centre with views of the forest and creek, high ceilings finished in hemlock and a brand new kitchen with fir cupboards and modern appliances. New shelving is about to be installed and donated but still attractive and sleek office furniture gives the place a lived in look. The walls will have pinable surfaces and a giant screen hooked up to the web cam shows activity in the creek. “This is a key part of the education piece,” Dennett said. There will also be a place for microscopes and for collaboration, because BIMES hopes Mossom becomes a community facility for providing information and lectures
about the environment and the importance of salmon to the ecosystem. Funding by way of grants or donations is now being sought to pay for maintenance, operations, programming and upkeep of the building, which is so much more than anyone dreamed of when it was first conceived about 17 months ago. Dennett is also proud of the many environmental features of the building : the green roof, which cuts down on energy consumption; a permeable concrete called Hydromedia, which allows rain water to percolate into the ground gradually, used for the building apron and pathway; the use of local wood, such as fir
and hemlock as both a construction and design element; and the fact that the project achieved a 95% recycling rate on demolition and an 85% recycling rate during construction. “We want to tell everyone how sustainable this building was in its planning and construction,” Dennett said. The public will be able to learn all this and more at Saturday’s open house between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Parking is limited and the gravel road, off Ioco Road, is narrow, so be careful, or carpool, bike or walk if possible. PoMo actor Stewart hosts kidney transplant summit Group pushes for presumed consent legislation The Tri-CiTy News
Actor William Stewart has appeared in such films as The Interview, 50/50 and The A-Team and several television shows, and he’s now writing a movie about Willie O’Ree, the NHL’s first black hockey player, and creating a new TV series called Blood Money. “I’m actually quite busy for a guy who’s pretty sick,” joked the Port Moody resident and father of three. Stewart was told three years ago that his kidneys are slowly deteriorating; these days, he has to go on dialysis every night for eight hours but counts himself as “one of the lucky ones” who gets to do it at home instead of in hospital. One of the keys to living with kidney disease, he said, is staying positive. “I try to maintain my happiness and try not to get down,” Stewart said. “I don’t like to sugarcoat things but I do have the attitude of what am I going to do, sit here and cry about it? That’s just not going to happen, so how about we go with plan B and try to be as happy as I possibly can and… hopefully at some point I can get a kidney transplant.” Earlier this month, Stewart hosted the first ever BC Kidney Transplant Consensus Summit, put on by the Kidney Foundation, that recommended B.C. adopt presumed consent legislation to increase the number of kidney transplants in the province. The courtroom-style summit was chaired by the former Attorney General Wally Oppal and heard from a number of experts in support of transplantation as the best option for B.C. dialysis patients. “Kidney disease is serious and until there is a cure, the best available therapy for a dialysis patient is a kidney transplant,” said Dr. David Landsberg, medical director of the Kidney Transplant

A panel of housing and health experts will lead the last round for the Riverview Hospital visioning project. Last week, Michael Flanagan of BC Housing — which is in charge of the 244 acres of provincial land in Coquitlam — told the city’s Riverview Lands advisory committee the agency has four professionals to lead a discussion on urban planning and mental health. They are: • Julian Somers, professor of health sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and former director of the SFU Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction; • Darrell Burnham, CEO of Coast Mental Health; • Brent Toderian, president of Toderian UrbanWorks and former chief planner for the city of Vancouver; • and Tsur Sommerville, director at the UBC Centre for Urban Economics and Real Estate. The panel will be moderated by Gordon Price, director of The City Program at SFU

Their talk and open house will take place on Wednesday, June 10 at the Executive Plaza Hotel (405 North Rd., Coquitlam) from 7 to 9:30 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. BC Housing has led the visioning exercise on the Riverview lands for the past 18 months. Its third round last fall involved generating concept drawings that focused on five themes: mental health and
wellness, natural environment, economic development, residential life and infrastructure. Blaire Chisholm, vice-president of Brook Pooni Associates, which is responsible for the marketing campaign, told the Coquitlam city committee the 47 concept drawings received 597 unique views online and 60,000 votes. And ranking at the top was mental health and wellness, she said (copies of the Round 3 consultation are available at

He told the committee that, since it has taken over the reins from Shared Services BC this year, BC Housing has brought on a full-time maintenance crew. As well, it plans to hire an arborist for the site’s worldclass arboretum as well as a
senior operations director and a film co-ordinator (filming revenue is up at Riverview due to the lower Canadian dollar, he said). However, asked by Norma Gillespie about the committee’s wishes to have an acute care hospital at Riverview, Flanagan said it’s unlikely given the provincial government’s priorities. “Some elements are there... but I don’t think it goes as far as that aspiration,” he said.

BC Housing is considering land uses and input from a number of stakeholders including the province of B.C., city of Coquitlam, Kwikwetlem First Nation, provincial partners and the public. The city has sent its requests — along with a report from Dr. John Higgenbottam, a former vice-president of the 103-yearold institution — as has the Tri-Cities Homelessness and Housing Task Group. At last Thursday’s meeting, the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce also presented a draft from its Riverview sub-committee, showing the majority of its members want to see an office/retail/private business component to compliment the existing services. Yesterday (Tuesday), committee chairperson Coun. Craig Hodge praised BC Housing for keeping the city and the community up to date. He’s also pleased the two themes of mental health and natural environment have scored high, which aligns with Coquitlam’s plans. “I hope those will remain the key cornerstones to future development,” Hodge said. “We need a mental health and wellness centre and we need to find a way to work within the footprint of the existing buildings so that we can keep Riverview special.”

‘SWATTING’ INCIDENTS
Teen has long history of online harassment told Coquitlam RCMP that the release of their online personal details resulted in people across the U.S. trying to open bank accounts in their names. It destroyed their credit rating. Bauer said the teen’s victims were frightened of his cyberbullying. “All of his actions had a strong impact on their livelihood,” he told the judge. Bauer said the teen had gained a notorious online reputation. By November 2014, when he targeted three Newport Beach, Cali., gamers, a victim who had declined his Twitter request notified her hometown police after the teen telephoned her home; she believed she was going to be swatted like other League of Legends followers, too. Her instincts proved right: As police were driving to her residence to investigate the complaint, the teen called the Newport police dispatch to say he had a family of five held hostage with an AR15 rifle and bombs. When the dispatcher told him about the prank warning, he responded, “OK” and hung up. In the Utah case, the dispatcher suspected the teen had a mental illness when he claimed he was at his exgirlfiend’s home and had her family tied up. The police chief

Window security can be improved by nailing or screwing it shut (unless it’s used as a fire exit), replacing keyless latches with a keyed latch or slide bolt, fitting a piece of wood into a sashless window track or using bars or grillwork on basement windows. Additional options include fixing shatter-resistant film or Lucite (high impact acrylic sheeting) to windows.

attended their home to find the family at the dining room table, unharmed. When the teen attempted a second swatting of the home the next day, Coquitlam RCMP were notified and they verified it was a local teen. This past March and last November, the teen also admitted to a bomb hoax that prompted the Space Mountain ride in Disneyland to shut down last year.During those two court hearings, he pleaded guilty to harassment, extortion, uttering threats, breach of recognizance and seven counts of mischief. Last Friday, Judge Patricia Janzen ordered a second psychiatric assessment of the teen, who has since been charged with a total of 40 crimes. As of today (Wednesday), he has been remanded for 169 days. Wearing a sweatsuit, no shoes and shackles on his ankles, the teen smirked but showed little emotion during the proceeding, though often flipped his hair, drummed his fingers on his knees or pumped his leg quickly. The sentencing hearing will continue June 29.
*
On Sept. 16, 2014, after she repeatedly rejected him, the teen called the Tucson police to prompt a swat of her home, claiming he had shot his parents with an AR-15 rifle, had bombs and would kill the police if he saw any marked vehicles. Five days later he pulled the same prank while her mother was visiting, as well as swatted her parents’ home in Phoenix, identifying himself as the woman’s brother and telling the police department there: “I shot my parents with an AR-15 rifle.” Police and a helicopter were on scene within minutes and the father and son were removed from the home at gunpoint. The Phoenix hoax generated news stories and the Coquitlam teen posted a link to an article on his Twitter feed, “bragging he made the call,” Bauer said. The next month, the teen sent the woman a message to inform all her parents’ credit card information was online. Three days later, the teen used a program to send his victim 218 text messages simultaneously, the court heard. And last December, just days before he was arrested by Coquitlam RCMP, the teen hacked into the woman’s University of Arizona email
and Twitter accounts. The teen tweeted out the families’ personal information, including their social insurance numbers, and called companies posing as the woman’s father. He tried to cancel utilities and the internet to the parents’ home, and signed the woman up for a new phone service at a cost of $500 a month for the data plan. On Dec. 1, 2014, just days before he was arrested by Coquitlam RCMP, the teen posted an eight-hour live stream of himself on YouTube that captured him tormenting and swatting his victims. Bauer said many people watching the online stream notified police when the teen prompted a swat of a home in Grove City, Ohio. In that instance, the caller told the dispatcher he was a retired FBI agent, had a family of five held hostage with an AR-15 rifle and had planted bombs around the home. The teen demanded a $20,000 ransom and threatened to kill the family if his orders weren’t met. About seven hours later — after the father walked out of the home to see armed officers surrounding it — the police department ruled it a false report. In the Minnesota case, the parents of the young victim

Metro support for Burrard Thermal comes with a catch Vancouver insists natural gas power plant goes green JEFF NAGEL BLACK PRESS
Metro Vancouver has joined a push to keep the Burrard Thermal power station on standby as a backup electricity source for the Lower Mainland, but with a proviso that it burn a renewable energy source in the future instead of natural gas. Regional district directors
voted Friday on the issue after Vancouver directors pushed through a contentious amendment requiring the shift away from fossil fuel use as a measure to help meet climate change goals. Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie said the goal of keeping Burrard Thermal as a backup in case a catastrophe cuts off hydroelectric power to the region must also be balanced against the need to cut greenhouse gas emissions over the long term. “There’s no way to meet these goals without taking action,” he said.
Belcarra Mayor Ralph Drew questioned what renewable fuel source could feasibly power the plant, adding that burning wood pellets or wood waste might mean worse air pollution in the region’s airshed compared to natural gas. BC Hydro officials have defended the decision to close the plant, saying it’s almost never used, would require costly upgrades to make it more efficient, and that the completion soon of another power line from Interior dams will make it even less likely to be needed in the future.
Burrard Thermal can generate enough electricity to power 700,000 homes, or 9%of the province’s generating capacity. Scrapping the 50-year-old plant is expected to save $14 million a year in operating costs and avoid a $400-million upgrade that would otherwise be needed. The City of Port Moody, which stands to lose property tax grants if the plant is dismantled, has argued the transmission lines that bring power from the Interior remain vulnerable to being knocked out by ice storms, flash floods, forest fires or earthquakes.

The Burrard Thermal generating station at Port Moody is used only about one per cent of the time and BC Hydro says the likelihood of it being needed as emergency power backup for the Lower Mainland will soon diminish further.

Preserve rental housing C
oquitlam and Port Moody, and to a lesser extent Port Coquitlam, must be scrupulous in protecting affordable rental stock while the Evergreen Line takes shape. There must be provisions to ensure the working poor, new immigrants just starting out and refugee families, are not chased out of the area by rapid transit. Indeed, they are the ones most likely to need and use public transportation. But where are we headed? For the last several decades, the North Road corridor has provided critical rental housing for the region. Yet with each new development, including the latest project proposed by Blue Sky in Burquitlam, come concerns that rental housing will be eliminated or new condos too pricey for those who need it. The people who live in apartments slated for bulldozing are those who work in our restaurants and in our service sector, raising
children who go to schools in our neighbourhoods. We do not want to turn them out just because transit leads to old neighbourhoods being torn down and new ones rising in their place. For the most part, Blue Sky, a subsidiary of Bosa, is making good on its promise to ease the pain of neighbourhood transi-
tion. Among its planned 873 condo units are 57 units of rental housing, and the developer promises to provide six months’ notice to vacate rather than the two months required by law. The company has also offered to waive rents for some displaced residents and said any current tenant or family members who wish to purchase a unit in

the new development will be given 12 months’ worth of rent toward their down payment. But make no mistake, some of these newcomers will not have the credit backgrounds to get a mortgage, and this offer could be a pipe dream for many. As well, it should be noted that the number of rental units in the project is about half of what currently exist in the area. There is no doubt Blue Sky wouldn’t be building this project if profits weren’t a near certainty, and condo prices will likely offset the cost of these rental units. If senior governments were able to once again pitch in, we might see more options, such as co-ops and other types of housing, that would allow people to stay in these neighbourhoods. For now, though, the most we can hope for is that the city takes a keen interest, and do all it can to save or promote affordable housing.

TRANSIT REFERENDUM
OTTAWA
More accountability needed May’s flub ‘was before a vote for more taxes all about her’ The Editor, Re: “Coquitlam is the latest council to back Yes vote” (The Tri-City News, Mar. 3). We definitely don’t wish to provide the Metro Vancouver Mayor’s Council with more access to our savings and reducing our lifestyle. The mayors and staff have used millions of our tax money as a slush fund to promote their transit plans for more taxation. It is ridiculous when one thinks of all the other sources of taxation imposed on us, like the waste of our tax dollars for ElectionsBC advertising. The money generated from all residents’ tax money — not just Metro Vancouver. And to say the mayors, bureaucrats (staff) and councillors are looking after our money leaves plenty of questions. Coquitlam is proposing to spend our tax money for a consultant report on parking/ traffic issues in the event we, the No side, win the refer-
generating for the city bureaucrats to spend and continue with these far out ideas of overbuilding and overpopulating our community. Let’s put a stop to these ideas and get back to respecting our community. Buses will not be the cure all. Elwin Mowry Coquitlam
The Editor Let’s be clear about one thing regarding Elizabeth May’s Ottawa Press Gallery outburst: it was all about her. One of the biggest issues with the Green Party, not just May but Adam Olsen as well, is that the party becomes a platform for the leader, rather than a platform for important issues and policies. Case in point: at the Press Gallery goof, Elizabeth hurled insults at the Conservative cabinet (I thought she was against attack style politics) and then apologized, calling the whole thing a poorly planned comedy routine and then telling the media how tired she is. Despite apologizing, May fails to take full accountability for her actions. Trying to explain your way out of a situation isn’t tak-

Metro Vancouver residents still have until May 29 to cast their ballots in the transit referendum. For more information go to www endum. How about having the overpaid senior staff in Coquitlam earning their remuneration rather than directing consultants to do their work?
Why are we allowing mayors to destroy our heritage and rights to satisfy their plans. Just look at all the development and how much money it is
The Editor, I’m all for improving public transit service and usage. However, I will not be voting Yes to more taxes for it until the use of said taxes is clearly documented and publicly accessible. At the touch of a keyboard, public sector financing/salaries are accessible to the public (for example, health care, education, municipal employees). Why can’t our public transit organization provide the same accountability? Jennie Boulanger Coquitlam

Metro votes to oppose oil pipeline twinning Some directors fear oil-by-rail risks may grow JEFF NAGEL BLACK PRESS
The Metro Vancouver regional district will formally oppose Kinder Morgan’s proposed twinning of its Trans Mountain oil pipeline after a vote of the board Friday. The decision came after the release of a new projection of the environmental impact of a local oil spill and a report from the City of Burnaby warning it could not contain a major fire at the tank farm near the pipeline terminal. “If there is a serious or catastrophic incident at the tank farm we are incapable of being able to control that,” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan told the board. “The more we learn about it, the riskier it gets,” Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said of the Kinder Morgan proposal. Other directors cited the Coast Guard’s deficient response to the relatively small spill of fuel oil in April from a freighter in Vancouver harbour. Not all directors supported the motion. Belcarra Mayor Ralph Drew and Langley Township Coun. Charlie Fox both opposed it, warning that if Kinder Morgan’s pipeline push is stymied, large volumes of oil may end up rolling through B.C. on trains, at much greater risk to the environment and communities. “The oil is going to come to the coast one way or another,” Drew said. “If it doesn’t come by pipeline, it’s going to come by rail car. And nothing scares me more than unit rail cars coming down the Fraser Canyon.” He said a derailment of an oil train there could quickly foul the entire lower Fraser and send oil into Georgia Strait.
“Just saying no to a pipeline, I believe, will create an actual bigger problem that would be far more disastrous to the environment in British Columbia than the twinning of that pipeline.” Port Coquitlam Mayor and Metro board chair Greg Moore agreed a rise of oil-by-rail shipments is a significant risk, adding oil is likely to find its way to market. “I’ve got the biggest rail yard in B.C. sitting in Port Coquitlam,” Moore said. “If that’s going to be filled up with a mobile pipeline, I have huge concerns about that.” Metro is filing evidence to the National Energy Board by a May 27 deadline to back up its opposition to the project. Regional district staff said in a report that Kinder Morgan has failed to adequately respond to requests for information on potential impacts during the National Energy Board process. The new projection of the movement of spilled oil, commissioned by the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby and the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, estimated 50 to 90% of oil lost would reach area shorelines within hours. It assumed an entirely uncontained spill of 16 million litres of oil — about one fifth of a typical tanker’s load — with no effort by responders to boom it off. City officials say they ordered the animated simulation to depict a spill’s impact because Kinder Morgan would not. Each tiny dot represents 2,000 litres of oil, close to the amount of fuel oil spilled from the freighter Marathassa last month. The Trans Mountain project would result in a seven-fold increase in oil tanker traffic to more than 400 a year. Richmond directors urged Metro to be wary that a new bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel could allow tankers to go upriver to Surrey, which might serve as an alternative

S
pring weather is changeable, so here are some middle school reads for any forecast. • For a heat wave: The war against the invisible space aliens is not going well. Alice Dare and other lucky children are evacuated from earth to the relative safety of Mars. But life on the red planet is not all space games. The poisonous atmosphere, the blazing heat and lack of oxygen are just the start of her worries when all the adults mysteriously disappear from the base. The kids have to fend for themselves on a hostile planet where the environment might not be the only enemy. Sophie McDougall’s Mars Evacuees is a thrill-a-minute scifi classic in the making. • For thunderstorms: Molly and Kip are driving to their deaths. That is what the townsfolk say as the siblings travel through the strange woods to the remote Windsor estate where they have been hired as servants. In the hall, hangs a portrait of a family with rosy cheeks and bright blue eyes, but the family they meet are as pale as death, with eyes as black as night. Are Molly and Kip the family’s salvation or the house’s next victims? Canadian author Jonathan Auxier’s The Night Gardener is a spinetingling read. • For muggy weather: Mo LeBeau’s guardian has accidentally bought herself an old, abandoned inn, and according to the official paperwork, that inn comes with one genuine, bona fide ghost. As co-founder of the Desperado Detective Agency, Mo can’t let a mystery like that pass her by. With her less-than-enthu-

siastic friend Dale, she starts a paranormal investigation with surprising (and spooky) results. Set deep in North Carolina, Sheila Turnage’s The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing is a funny, atmospheric treat. • For blustery weather: The winds of change are blowing through Rome in Jennifer A. Nielsen’s The Mark of the Thief. A cave full of treasure that once belonged to Julius Caesar has been uncovered in a mine outside Rome. Nicolas Calva has just watched two fellow slaves go into the tomb; one is dead and the other has been driven mad. A scheming general forces Nicholas down into the dark to retrieve a seemingly innocuous amulet and when he puts the amulet on, he is thrust into a world of magic, gladiators, griffins, political intrigue and danger in this pulse-pounding adventure. • For chilly weather: Once, a terrible queen ravaged the land with ice and snow. According to prophecy, only the nameless boy could stop her. Before he can act, the queen locks him away in an inescapable prison. There he will wait until his protective magic fades and the queen will return to destroy him and cover the world in ice. Years pass and Ophelia and her family come to work in a
strange museum where she meets a boy with a fantastical story. But is it true? And will she be brave enough to help him? Find out in Karen Foxlee’s Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy. • For sunny weather: Summer camp is all about friends, campfires, singalongs and three-eyed supernatural foxes. At least it is at Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. The Lumberjane scouts are spending their summer earning unusual badges including the Everything Under the Sum Badge for mathematics under duress and the Pungeon Master Badge for bad puns. The five scouts solve mysteries, drive their camp counsellor crazy, tussle with mysterious creatures and take friendship to the max. The graphic novel Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters and Brooke Allen is the ultimate summer camp adventure. Find these and other fairweather friends at your local library. A Good Read is a column by Tri-City librarians that is published on Wednesdays. Corene Maret Brown works at the Port Moody Library.

PORT COQUITLAM
Take the PoCo BiA survey JANIS WARREN
The Tri-CiTy News
Downtown Port Coquitlam has plenty of eateries, beauty and health shops, and lawyers offices. But what more could it have to make the core a bigger draw for residents and shoppers? That’s the question the PoCo Business Improvement Association is asking the public this month as it sets its sights on the future. Until June 12, the BIA is gauging feedback via an online survey (at pocobia.com) and offering participants a
chance to win one of three prizes offered by three businesses: Giggle Dam Theatre, Urban Man Cave and Under the Moon. Consultant Jeff Nixon of Synergist Communications, which has been hired by the PoCo BIA and was previously involved in marketing campaigns for the Maple Ridge, New Westminster and Harrison Hot Springs BIAs, said the outreach is designed to get input from a wide demographic. “Although the BIA focuses on its members, we still need to hear from residents and visitors — anyone who uses or has been to downtown
PoCo,” Nixon said. Already, the online results have been impressive, with more than 1,000 responses since the survey launched two weeks ago, PoCo Coun. Dean Washington said at a recent city council meeting. Besides the survey, the BIA will host a focus group on Tuesday, May 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Gathering Place at Leigh Square Community Arts Village (beside PoCo city hall). Participants will also be eligible to win an iPad Mini. To save a spot, call 604-464-1490 or email info@ pocobia.com.

Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association is doing research to help strengthen downtown Port Coquitlam’s identity and focus our marketing efforts. • Take our survey at www.pocobia.com until June 12 and be entered to win an evening for two at the Giggle Dam Theatre, a $50 gift card for the Urban Man Cave, or a gift basket from Under the Moon. • Attend our focus group on May 26, 6:30-8:30 pm in the Gathering Place at Leigh Square and be entered to win an iPad Mini. Renovate Preparing WOOD for finishing W
ood is one of the most popular materials for outdoor projects, thanks to its attractive appearance, durability and versatility. But you also have to know how to optimize its qualities with the proper finish. However, before treating wood, the surface has to be properly prepared, with the exception of very new virgin wood that hasn’t yet been exposed to the elements. Here is an overview of this crucial step in any wood finishing project.
PRE-TREATED SURFACES
NOW AVAILABLE!
GREYING VIRGIN WOOD
Wood darkens quickly, depending on the weather and presence of mildew. That means even if the surface you want to treat has never been stained, you’ll still need to wash it to ensure that the finishing product adheres properly. It’s okay to wash it with a pressure washer, but be very careful not to damage the wood by applying too much pressure. There are also a variety of wood cleaners available in stores; look for one that contains oxalic acid, the bleach of choice for wood. And now you can move on to the finishing stage!

Staining exterior wood? Have you prepared the surface properly?
www.mrheating.com
✃
If the surface in question has already been stained, it will have to be stripped before proceeding further. Use a cleaner specifically designed for outdoor use, as it will be water-based and biodegradable. However, be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions, as this kind of product can come in several different concentrations and often needs to be diluted. After applying the product evenly, wait 15 minutes and then clean the wood with either a pressure washer or a good old
scrubbing brush and some water.

Renovate The art of gardening on a SLOPE S loping ground can prove to be a challenge for amateur gardeners. A common problem is that water and fertilizers quickly trickle to the bottom of the slope without doing the job they were intended for. That is why it is essential to put in step terracing on this kind of terrain. This type of layout has the advantage of limiting the effect of runoff and improving water infiltration in the soil. These terraces also make it easier for gardeners to get to their plants and increase the number of flowerbeds.

with Cellular Shades from Budget Blinds by Budget Blinds
To create the first terrace, start at the top of the slope. The subsequent slopes will level out as you descend. Two or three terraces are usually sufficient for a residential property. Incidentally, the terraces don’t all have to be the same size.
SP
Once the work is completed, the terraces can be used in the same way as flat ground. When choosing plants, just be sure to choose species for the lower levels that won’t grow taller than those higher up the slope.
The usual way of building a terraced slope is to construct dry-stone supporting walls. This is the most durable solution aswell as themost esthetic. It does, however, require some technique and a lot of time and patience to do a good job. Wood can also be used for this type of project, but its lifespan is not as long as that of stone.

Would you love nothing more than to relax in a spa on your deck, but your children are rooting for a pool? Spa or pool — it’s a difficult choice. Before coming to a decision, be sure to weigh all the pros and cons. Careful planning is essential when you’re thinking of landscaping your backyard with this type of specialty installation. Either way, it’s a challenging project for you to tackle.
THE FIRST STEPS
Before shelling out any of your hard ear ned dollars, look into current bylaws and regulations in your municipality. This applies whether you’re installing a spa, an in-ground pool, or an aboveground pool. You’ll probably be told that you need a building permit and that you need to respect property lines. It is also going to be necessary, most likely, to build a fence around the spa or pool, even if it’s an above-ground one. The next step is to think about where the pool or the spa should be positioned. You can’t just put it anywhere. The factors you’ll have to take into consideration include the location of your deck and garden shed; the presence of any electrical wires, trees and roots; the children’s play area; and the positioning of any electrical wiring that will be required. Don’t forget to figure out how much sunshine and shade your ideal spot will get at different times of the year.
WHY GET A POOL?
most from the pleasures of a pool. Having a pool in the backyard is like being on vacation all the time; there will be no more driving through traffic jams to get to a public pool or beach. You’ll be able to go for a dip whenever you feel like it — before work, at lunchtime, or late in the evening — without disturbing anyone.
WHY GET A SPA?
There is plenty of evidence that whirlpool baths are therapeutic, both for healthy people and for those suffering from chronic diseases such as arthritis. Other benefits include muscle relaxation, the oxygenation of the tissues, the elimination of toxins, and improved blood circulation. And of course, stepping into a hot whirlpool just feels great! A spa is perfect for some quiet time alone or for enjoyment with family or friends.

Open call for teen thespians
Young thespians wanting to be part of a theatre troupe at Coquitlam’s Place des Arts can audition for a spot next month. The Theatre and Musical Theatre companies, which hold classes from September to May at the Maillardville facility, invites performers aged 13 to 17 to try out on Saturday, June 6. And, on Sunday, June 7, auditions will be held for youth aged 15 to 18 to be in the Summer Teen Troupe, a company of six actors that rehearses with professional director James McDonald and performs a 30-minute show in Tri-City parks and community centres in July. Rehearsals run from July 8 to 24 at Place des Arts, with performances from July 27 to 31. The troupe will have the support of two other theatre professionals — stage manager Angel Chung and production designer Sandy Margaret — and actors will each receive a $600 honorarium. To book a time and request an audition package, contact Michael Fera at 604-664-1636 or email mfera@placedesarts. ca. A theatrical company under the wing of a Port Coquitlam drama teacher will present its eighth annual festival next month. Shift Theatre hosts its oneact shows about love and loss, from June 17 to 20 at The Cultch in Vancouver. Each night, the audience will see Anthea Morritt’s Run, CR Packer’s Another Shot, Pippa NICOLE ROBERGE Mackie’s Deer Harper and Pedro Chamale’s Mis Papás. “These four, tightly told stories were carefully selected by Shift’s panel for their boldness and originality,” said artistic director Nicole Roberge, who also teaches at Riverside secondary in Port Coquitlam. “The festival was founded on forward-thinking, DIY values to provide a bigger platform for smaller shows; over the years, it has helped local, emerging participants grow into prolific professional artists.” Tickets at $20 for the 1-Act Festival are via 604-251-1363 or online at shifttheatre.ca.

After all, the two not only shared a family bond but they also had the same style and nature themes as well. Often, they would talk about what they were working on,

Sarah Ronald, a Port Coquitlam resident who coordinates the programming at Inlet Theatre in Port Moody, said the display will include nine pieces each plus four collaborative works they painted over the past year. The latter works are places they have been to — either together or apart — and include scenes of Ireland and Tofino, for example; they each started two then exchanged the canvases to let the other finish. “I kind of liked the fact that there was a distance between us, kind of like we were creating from afar,” Sarah said. MAGIC
Beckman bends reality with tricks SARAH PAYNE THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Vitaly Beckman was always fascinated by art, but it wasn’t until a mesmerizing David Copperfield show he saw as a teenager that he knew the art of illusion would be his career. Born in Belarus and now a Burnaby resident, Beckman has been honing his magical craft for nearly 20 years and will bring his masterful illusions to the Evergreen Cultural Centre stage in Coquitlam this Friday, May 22 in Vitaly: An Evening of Wonders. “This show is about noticing the wonder in the world and turning it into an unforgettable theatrical experience,” Beckman said. His own sense of wonder started not with Copperfield’s ability to make an airplane disappear, but with the rubber band trick — an illusion of a much smaller scale, but no less challenging. Beckman recorded the Copperfield show on a VHS tape and watched it over and over and over again, hoping to figure out a way to duplicate it
but coming up short. “I had these rubber bands and I thought, ‘How would I do it if I had to show it to somebody?’” Beckman said. “I tried it and it worked and my parents were impressed, my friends were impressed and I wanted to show them more. I forced myself to come up with new ideas and I realized I was good at creating new and original magic.” Creating new and more complex illusions became Beckman’s passion and, combined with performing them on stage for an audience, he’d found his artistic calling. And he’s gaining a reputation for mind-bending tricks like making drawings come off the paper and giving audience members the gift of removing their photos from their driver’s licences. Whether it’s manipulating photos, untangling intertwined rubber bands or making a plane disappear, Beckman said any form of magic — or art, for that matter — comes down to illusion. “Artists create something out of nothing,” he said. “We blur

Williams re-creates Elvis’ ‘68 comeback JANIS WARREN THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Eli Williams has been an Elvis tribute artist since he graduated high school seven years ago. On Saturday, he’ll bring his latest act to Port Moody’s Inlet Theatre. He spoke to The Tri-City News last week about the new performance — a complete recreation of Elvis’ comeback in 1968 — and his admiration for the King of Rock ’n Roll: Why did you choose Elvis? Well, it all started on a whim when I just started growing my sideburns then combing my hair. But the real catalyst was during the original [movie] Men In Black, during the scene when they are driving through the Holland Tunnel and Tommy Lee Jones puts on an 8-track of Elvis’ Promised Land. I immediately latched on to that, went out the next day, bought my first Elvis CD and since then I guess the rest is history. I just came to realize that, to me, Elvis was the coolest thing ever and, by performing as him, is my way of sharing his music. Do you do any other tribute acts? Not as such though I am in other bands and sing other styles of music: everything
from Johnny Cash to the Rolling Stones. Always rock ’n roll.
20 contests. I have also finished in the Top 5 in the Images of the King contest in Memphis as well as in Las Vegas.
Have you visited his home, Graceland? I have several times. The first time was a graduation present from my mom. I went with my three best friends on a Greyhound [bus]. Since then, I have been the last three summers for Elvis Week in August (which coincides with the anniversary of his passing) and it is truly an experience that cannot be explained. As an Elvis fan, it’s a Mecca.
Have you performed in Port Moody before? I actually have. I played about three or four years ago at the Legion with one of my old bands. But this is the first time as a real Elvis show. Where was your debut show for the ’68: The Show? March 28 of this year in Abbotsford at the MCA Theatre.
What is your favourite Elvis song to sing? It’s so tough to pick one but If I Can Dream, Bridge Over Troubled Water or Promised Land. Why do people love his music? It’s one of those things that truly transcends eras. I just think that Elvis is eternally cool. And he sings every song as though he’s singing it to each and every individual. He feels every syllable. Have you competed in Elvis competitions? Almost every year I have competed in the Elvis Presley Enterprises “Ultimate Elvis” contest, which is the officially

For tickets, visit portmoody.ca. recognized world championships. It sort of works like Miss America where you have to win a preliminary contest in order to qualify for the worlds, which is in Memphis every August. I have competed there three times, having won qualifiers in Penticton (2012), Waikiki
(2013) and Pala, Cali. (2014). I am actually part of the world’s only Elvis school “Elvis 101” that is taught by a gentleman from Surrey. The final exam (so to speak) of my first year was to compete in the Penticton Elvis Festival. Since then, I have competed in probably close to
What is different about your new show? ’68: The Show is different in its scope. We are completely recreating Elvis’ famous comeback special. [It has] every song, every costume change, along with multimedia videos as well as dancers. And this show will feature my band, The Memphis Sound. The tough thing about doing a show like this is that it was originally an edited TV special, where Elvis performed all the segments and footage over several days. Yet, we are doing it all in one take. Who are your musicians and dancers on stage? The musicians, back up dancers and support cast are
all local. The Memphis Sound is led by Blue Morris. The band includes Alex Kelley, who not only plays bass but arranged and charted all the songs for the show, Eric Rasmussen on drums and Mark Hoeppner on keys. ARTS IN BRIEF
Lineup for next ECC season announced
Two new Canadian productions, the Arts Club series and a theatrical tribute to a folk music icon is on the roster for the next season at Evergreen Cultural Centre. Last week, David Mann, performing arts manager of the Coquitlam arts hub, announced the line-up for 2015-’16. Launching its 19th year will be The Incompleat Folksinger by Pete Seeger, from Sept. 22 to 26. The one-man show is performed by Mark Hellman tells the story of Seeger’s music and life. Next up is the Arts Club’s Red Rock Diner, from Oct. 27 to 31 — a musical that captures the excitement Vancouver DJ Red Robinson created when rock ’n roll came on board. The company will also premiere a new play about family life called In a Blue Moon by Lucia Frangione while Arts Club favourite Nicola Cavendish returns to Evergreen from March 1 to 5 as Vera in 4000 Miles. Next spring will also see the remount of Late
Company from Touchstone Theatre, penned by the winner of the 2014 Governor General’s Award for Drama. The narrative centres on justice, cyberbullying and parenthood. And, from May 9 to 14 will be a production about motherhood. Motherload, which ran at The Cultch this year, tells the tales of four real-life mothers and their struggles to do it all. Visit evergreenculturalcentre.ca for theatre series subscriptions.

LEFT: Nora Archer-Hastie’s mixed media piece — done with graphite, chalk pastel and China marker — was named the winner of the first annual youth art and writing exhibit in Port Coquitlam this month. The Grade 11 Riverside secondary student entered her work, titled Constricted, in the Mindfulness in May show, which closed last week. “My piece may look frightening at first glance but if you look closer you can see that the struggles and journeys myself and many others face can only be expressed through art,” Archer-Hastie wrote in her artist’s statement. Evans takes talents to Auburn University GARY MCKENNA The Tri-CiTy News
At close to six feet tall at the age of 13, it did not take long for Ana Evans to get the attention of basketball coaches at her Hillcrest middle school. Frank Konig began working with the young athlete, helping her build a solid foundation that would serve her well as she
moved into high school and higher levels of competition. “He helped develop me as a player,” she said. “He was the one who saw a lanky, uncoordinated girl and decided to take her on as a challenge and for that I am so thankful.” Fast-forward to today and the 18-year-old Evans is gearing up for graduation and her toughest athletic challenge yet:
playing with Auburn University of Montgomery in Alabama. She recently signed with the NAIA division one school and said she chose the school because of its strong coaching staff. While Alabama is a long way from home, she said she is excited about the prospect of taking her game to the next level. see ‘IT’S WARM’, page 28

“Although it’s a lot different from Coquitlam, it seems like a great place to live,” she said. “I’m excited to be in a new area and bonus is that it’s warm all year round.” Her trip to Alabama in September will not be the first time the Dr. Charles Best secondary grad has travelled south. She participated in a series of tournaments with a team called B.C.’s Finest — coached by Konig — and visited towns like Atlanta and Nashville, as well as L.A. and Oregon. But the highlight of her young career is taking her Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils to the provincials last month for the first time in the history of the school’s girls’ basketball program. The team won some big games, with Evans averaging 14 points, and ended up placing eighth at the B.C. tournament. She will leave for Auburn in
