CELEBRATE WITH US CHAIR’S MESSAGE As Chair of the Port Coquitlam May Day Organizing Committee, I have the honor of sharing my excitement and pride in our week-long festival. This celebration began in 1923, and for ninety three years we continue to celebrate this event. We begin with our Opening Ceremony on Friday, April 29 and the Festival will continue until Sunday, May 8.
Leigh Square, followed by the May Day Mile a free family fun run on the parade route. Following that is a pre-parade favourite; the Vancouver Police Motorcycle squad will demonstrate their precision skills on the parade route. After the parade is the Leigh
Preparedness Fair, and Heritage Trolley Tours, all taking place in the downtown core. Our featured performers that day will be starting at 1:30pm with Greg Drummond and the band Regal. Also, the second annual city sponsored “Biz Alley” which will feature
picnic lunch or enjoy a low-cost breakfast or lunch provided by the Scouts and Kinsmen Club of Port Coquitlam. Events are free and include storytelling with the Queen of Storytime, Magic with Matthew the Magician, yoga for moms, martial arts demos, and more! Come and celebrate your mother with us! All moms have a chance to win a spa package that day.
The Opening Ceremony features traditional May Pole dancing and the official introduction of the 2016 Port Coquitlam Royal Party. Over 200 local school children have been practicing May pole dancing and will perform these traditional dances that evening. The weekend festivities continue with the May Day Art Show by Art Focus on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 in the Outlet at Leigh Square.
If you are new to our community I encourage you to come out and experience the many activities. If you have been before, welcome back! Please share with us your favourite May Day moments via social media using #Pocomaydays
The following weekend activities commence at 3pm on Friday, May 6 with the opening of West Coast Amusement rides. Activities continue that evening with a concert by Choral Connections at 7pm, preceded by a guided Heritage walk at 6pm. The Rotary May Day parade is on Saturday, May 7th at 11am and in addition to the parade there are a variety of activities before and after the parade. The day starts off with the pancake breakfast in the Outlet in

CELEBRATE WITH US ROTARY MAY DAY PARADE SATURDAY, MAY 7TH
✃
The Rotary May Day parade is one of the longest running parades in the lower mainland. It officially starts at 11am but you are advised to come much earlier. Road closures around the parade route will go into effect shortly after 9am to allow assembly of the parade entries. Residents are encouraged to consider leaving the car at home and using forms of transportation to get to the parade.
Activities start in Leigh Square as early as 7am with the pancake breakfast prepared by the Kinsmen club and scouts. The May Day Mile is a free family fun run in celebration of Move for Health Day. Everyone is encouraged to participate and register by May 3rd at www. experienceit.ca for a chance to win prizes. Runners need to assemble by 9:45am at Shaughnessy Street and Wilson Avenue and run along the parade route. At 10:35am the Vancouver Police Department Drill Squad put on an amazing show with their formations. All of these activities are completed in time for official start of the Rotary May Day Parade at 11am. Parade organizers are excited by the number of new entries this year in the parade and expect the crowds to be wowed by the new floats.

CELEBRATE WITH US GREG DRUMMOND
MAY DAY BLOCK PARTY SATURDAY, MAY 7TH
“Straddling the genres of Canadiana and orchestral folk-rock, Greg Drummond employs the penetrating warmth of hollow-bodied guitars, horns and mandolins to carve out a sound that is uniquely his own.
Party with us in Leigh Square following the Rotary May Day Parade. This year’s block party promises to be better than ever with an amazing food truck line up, a beer garden, BizAlley and the May Day marketplace a variety of free activities and an exciting entertainment line up all afternoon…
In his sophomore record, “Drive” (2015), Drummond embarks on a compelling exploration through the themes of redemption, companionship, struggle and perseverance, with dynamic instrumentation that transports the audience through the majestic, ambient expanse of B.C.’s wilderness, to the thumping pulse of a wharf pub on the coast of Newfoundland.
