Tri-City fish hatcheries could be models for Chinese environmental groups seeking to restore salmon runs on one of the world’s largest rivers.

And with salmon set to return to spawn this fall, a cultural exchange and fact-finding mission that took place recently could herald a new form of relations between Canada and China that share a water body — the Pacific Ocean — and whose salmon species share similar traits, says retired biologist Matt Foy, who organized the tour.

“Chum salmon you see in Hyde Creek [in Port Coquitlam] look just like the ones you see in China,” Foy told The Tri-City News last week after he said goodbye to a delegation of three Chinese officials who spent several days in September touring Tri-City volunteer-run hatcheries and some of B.C.’s larger federal facilities. see LESSONS LEARNED, page 3

Lessons learned at Tri-City hatcheries are taken back to huge Chinese river continued from front page

The goal of the trip, according to Foy, was to find ways to boost chum salmon stocks on the Heilongjiang River through the establishment of small and medium sized hatcheries similar to those that have been so successful in B.C. A large fish hatchery located at Fuyuan City already produces Pacific salmon as well as two types of sturgeon, according to Foy, but more could be done.

“The NGO is trying to get a handle on the salmon resources of China — what they think they had, what they think they have left and what they could do about it. They know a lot about fisheries but they don’t know about how the fish go to the spawning grounds,” Foy said.

The trip follows two visits

by Foy and a colleague to Fuyuan County to tour hatcheries there and write a report for the Salmon Ecological Environment Protection Association, which was started by an entrepreneur interested in the environment.

He said the river, which shares a border with Russia, is the size of the Mississippi and issues faced there are similar to those facing B.C. rivers: overfishing and habitat destruction.

Foy, who worked on B.C. salmon restoration projects for 35 years with Fisheries and Oceans and Canada before retiring in 2015, says the success of Tri-City hatcheries to overcome those challenges through salmon restoration projects could be replicated on the Heilongjiang River.

While in the Tri-Cities, the delegates visited the Hyde Creek Education Centre and Hatchery in PoCo and a small hatchery on the Coquitlam River in the River Springs subdi-

Foy said B.C. hatcheries are blessed with volunteers who see salmon as more than a food fish and he hopes the Chinese delegates can inspire the same feelings back home.

“Salmon are the great uni-

fier,” he said, noting that wild Pacific salmon are an iconic fish that have become important to British Columbians over the last several decades.

In China, Foy said, a similar metamorphosis will likely take place, inspired by individuals wanting to give back to their community in the form of environmental stewardship.

Want to know more about how environmental groups are trying to bring back Pacific salmon in China?

Matt Foy wrote a children’s story about the effort in both English and Chinese that describes the efforts to restore salmon in the Heilongjiang watershed and the life cycle of salmon through the eyes of Little Xin, a chum salmon.

The story describes the watershed that is shared by China, Russia and Mongolia and was once the greatest chum salmon river in the world, with as many as 30 million salmon returning to the watershed each year.

Today, these chum salmon returns are about a third of what they were prior to the arrival of commercial fisheries beginning in the 20th century, and Foy, who wrote Black Dragon Salmon for elementary school children, hopes Chinese and Canadian students and parents will read the story and learn about these efforts.

“I am hoping [this book] would get across the idea of environmental stewardship very early.”

The book is available at fvwc.ca. It’s one of several stories Foy has written about the Salmon People to mark the International Year of the Salmon in 2019.

It’s an attention-getting word and, this month, the bubbly brew may have more to do with the Coquitlam River and protecting the environment than many people realize.

That’s because an alliance of community groups, government agencies and industry representatives working on projects to keep the river clean and healthy is using a Coquitlam craft brewery to help get its message out to the public.

Next Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m., the Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable will be holding a family friendly event at Mariner Brewing, featuring talks, tastings and displays where people can find out more about the roundtable and what it’s doing to protect the Coquitlam River.

“We’re really hoping to bring in some new faces and to bring in new people to volunteer and further the watershed plan,” explained Jill Dwyer, roundtable co-ordinator.

“It’s more like a meetand-greet networking event,” Dwyer told The Tri-City News, although she said the group still wants to get its message out so there will be five-minute “pop-up” talks where roundtable members will talk about the latest initiatives, including what’s being done to encourage the development community to be more environmentally sustainable.

“It’s for anyone who wants

to come and listen,” added Dwyer, who said snacks, along with beer tastings and non-alcoholic drinks, will be served.

As well, the first 50 attendees will receive a free, limited edition Roundtable/Mariner Brewing growler bottle.

Dwyer said the roundtable is a bit of a challenge to describe to people because it is not a single group but a collaboration between groups, government agencies, utilities and others who work in and around the river, all of them with a stake in its long-term viability. For example, current members include representatives from the local arts community, the gravel mining industry, developers, BC Hydro, Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam cities, and the Kwikwetlem First Nation as well as conservation groups and BCIT. This kind of cross-collaboration is necessary, Dwyer said, because no one agency is responsible for the river’s health, so everyone has to work together to protect it.

The event at a brewery is one of many initiatives, including appearances at local festivals, to spread awareness of the importance of conservation to ensure a healthy watershed.

“There are a lot of people in the community that want to get more involved in these kind of issues and they might not know about the roundtable,” Dwyer said, “and there are lots of opportunities to volunteer.”

Pinetree community centre is offering Junior Outdoor Explorers, a new program for children ages eight to 11 that connects them to the great outdoors and gives them an upclose view of nature.

It will run on Sundays from Oct. 14 to Nov. 25 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Connecting with dozens of council and school board candidates to find out if their issues and concerns match yours might seem like a daunting task.

But thanks to a 17-year-old Tri-City Grade 12 student, voters will have all that information and more at their fingertips with votemate.org, a civic election guide for all cities in MetroVancouver.

“You could go from not knowing anything to everything you need to know and more that quickly,” said Laef Kucheran, who has spent 400 hours since the summer gathering information on 759 candidates.

Here’s how it works: Candidates are approached via email to ask if they will submit a biography, a photo and policy information based on issues solicited from both voters and candidates.

LAEF KUCHERAN “I make sure there isn’t anything too outlandish,” said Kucheran, adding that three candidates in Vancouver wanted to pull soldiers out of Iraq, a federal, not municipal, issue.

The information is uploaded on votemate.org, which works on smartphones, tablets and computers, with a brief introduction and more information on candidates as you dive deeper.

Of course, the more candidates who participate, the better so voters can make a clear choice. So far, about 20% of candidates have signed up, with more joining every day.

When candidates don’t

bother to participate, Kucheran has a very simple method to get them to cooperate: He lets them know when their opponent has signed up.

“That’s worked incredibly well,” he told The Tri-City News. “They all want to support a project like this. It’s innovative and it’s good for the youth vote as well.”

He created a similar candidate guide for the 2017 provincial election, prompted by concerns about voter apathy, especially among young voters, and received submissions from more than a third of the 370 candidates.

Kucheran, who attends school at the Inquiry Hub in Coquitlam and is doing VoteMate in part as a school project, also plans to have a version ready for next year’s federal election.

“Voter apathy is a big problem in Canada and most of the western world because we have democracy,” he said.

“We have it pretty easy and a lot of people aren’t interested or aren’t interested in politics, and it turns them off. This is something I feel will make a difference.”

Concerned voters should bring their tough questions to a meet-and-greet event even though candidates for the School District 43 board of education won’t be debating the issues in a typical public forum.

That’s the advice of Charlie Loo, vice-president of the SD43 District Parent Advisory Council, which is organizing the upcoming all-candidates meeting for trustee candidates,.

Loo says the low-key open house is more effective for getting questions answered and learning about candidates than a traditional allcandidates meeting where questions are read by a moderator and candidates take turns answering.

“We’re hoping this is a chance for people to come and be able to meet the candidates and have conversations, similar that you might

The meeting is next Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the gym at Winslow Centre, 1100 Winslow Ave., Coquitlam, and is a drop-in event.

DPAC decided to hold the event because no other all-candidates meeting were planned and chose the meet-and-greet format over a debate, which was deemed “too clunky” because of the sheer number of candidates — 19 this election — and the fact that they represent three cities and two villages.

“I’m fairly confident, if we can get the people out there, it can be something that will

be beneficial to the voters. It will also be beneficial for the candidates,” said Loo, who was a candidate in the school board election four years ago.

He said he expects voters to come to the event with a variety of issues on their mind, naming financial stability and the need for more resources, such as education assistants, to support students with special needs, as among the top issues.

The format is a bit of a change from previous elections, when trustee candidates had to give a brief speech about their candidacy before debating issues on a stage in front of an audience.

And while school board elections don’t typically generate as much interest as do elections for mayor and council, SD43 has a $373-million budget and has been on a major building spree — and at $42,535, trustees earn more than some city councillors.

“If you have a question for the candidates that is important to you, this is a chance to ask them,” Loo said.

A candidate for Coquitlam school trustee who is named on a list of contenders for public office opposed to the use of SOGI 123 resources wants more discussion of the program before it is adopted in Tri-City public schools.

Hui Wang is one of 33 candidates listed on the bcsogi. ca website who say that if they are elected, they will remove the SOGI 123 curriculum from classroom instruction time.

Wang said he was aware he was named on the website and told The Tri-City News last week he wants more discussion at the board table about the resource before schools use the materials.

But it doesn’t appear that trustees will have a say in the matter, or at least get to comment anytime soon, according to School District 43.

In an email, assistant superintendent Rob Zambrano said SD43 has not completed its review of resources that will be used to support the new Physical and Health Education curriculum, and SOGI 123 is only one of several resources being considered.

“We have begun to work with teachers to identify which of all the many available resources are appropriate for

HUI WANG each grade level relative to what the curriculum mandates, and remain cognizant that the intent and approach of any lesson remains inclusive, respectful and balanced,” Zambrano stated.

Further, if parents have questions, they “should talk directly to the child’s teacher to attain clarity, context and intent,” he noted.

As well, SD43 notes on its website that SOGI is not a curriculum but a topic that can be addressed in many subjects, stating that there is a “legitimate need for increasing awareness of sexual orientation and gender identity to be as inclusive as possible.” SOGI follows changes to B.C. human rights legislation to include gender expression as a prohibited grounds of discrimination (sexual orientation was already include in the code), it further states at SD43.bc.ca under Resources.

But Wang, a former engineer from China and current small businessman who has

two children in SD43 schools, says teachers should have more direction in how they use resources that discuss issues such as gender identity.

“What should they teach, what would be better to teach children after some age, maybe after they get more mature,” Wang said, explaining that children could be confused if gender is described as being on a spectrum rather fixed by physical attributes.

“We don’t know the boundary,” he told The Tri-City News.

“Maybe some teacher is good and they will be considered and select the contents very carefully, no problem. Some teachers are more aggressive, that’s our concern.”

Huang, who arrived in Canada in 2000, said he and other traditional families, some who originate from China and Korea, have questions about how these issues are discussed in the classroom.

Other trustee candidates on the bcsogi.ca list include anti-SOGI activist Laura Lynn Thompson, who is seeking election in Burnaby.

Obtaining full medical benefits for School District 43 education assistants is a key aim of local bargaining set to begin later this fall, according to the president of the union local representing those workers.

CUPE Local 561 president Dave Ginter was commenting on the need to improve the working conditions for workers who support children with special needs as the hiring and retention of education assistants becomes a key issue around the board table and on the hustings as trustees vie for votes in the Oct. 20 civic election.

Local bargaining can begin now that a tentative agreement has been reached for support staff between the BC Public School Employers’ Association and the unions under the province’s sustainable service negotiating mandate. The agreement, which will be ratified once local bargaining concludes, is for a three-year term and includes annual wage increases of 2% per year.

Ginter said CUPE local presidents voted 63% to support the agreement this time — after turning down a previous deal a few months ago — because more funding was added for support staff at the

He said he hopes to convince SD43 to provide fully paid benefits to education assistants who are only allowed to work 30 hours per week, which is considered part-time, and thus required to contribute a portion of the fees for their medical plans.

“That’s a big issue when you’re competing with other districts [for workers],” Ginter told The Tri-City News.

The local bargaining unit would also like to see some positions restored that were cut in 2013, including apprentices, and Ginter said he disagreed with recent comments made

by SD43 officials that morale is good at the maintenance shop because positions have been restored.

“When they talk about having a surplus, well if you’re in a surplus, give us back what you took,” Ginter said.

The local also plans to get involved in the upcoming civic election by raising issues such as trustee pay, which is the

Port Moody is hoping the province’s recently announced $134-million recreation infrastructure fund can help pay for a new ice plant at its rec complex and jump-start the longplanned Inlet Field project.

The fund was announced during the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in the second week of September.

Shortly afterward Port Moody said it would have to spend almost $300,000 to install a temporary ice plant at Arena 2 at the Port Moody rec centre after ammonia was detected in the brine lines.

The city’s staff is going over the fund’s guidelines and making inquiries about whether the projects would be eligible.

Coun. Rob Vagramov said the chiller is going to be a huge drain on the city’s funds and Inlet Field has been a highpriority project that has yet to get a shovel in the ground.

“Something like this where we could partner with senior levels of government, especially when they’re reaching out to us, it’s absolutely key putting this wish list out there,” said Vagramov, adding even if the city got a negative response it would be better off because it would know where it stood.

SUTER GREEN LIGHT

A housing agreement for the last parcel of the Suter Brook development has been given the go-ahead by PoMo council.

The agreement with the Onni Group for parcel D at 300 Morrissey Rd. calls for development of 512 residential units, an increase from the previously proposed 290. The project, which will feature two 26-storey condo towers, will have 50 affordable rental housing suites and 26 for market rental in a six-storey building.

The proposed rents for the affordable housing units are proposed to range from $1,037 for a studio to $1,700 for a threebedroom affordable unit.

Onni has also agreed to provide a play area and open space to act as neighbourhood park for Suter Brook, to upgrade pedestrian access to Inlet Centre SkyTrain station and to make a density bonus payment of more than $16.6 million to the city.

Council approved the agreement, although with a provision proposed by Coun.

Meghan Lahti that requires the renters have access to the development’s pool and community space.

REVIVING CLARKE

Port Moody is about to begin developing a plan for revitalizing Clarke Street.

On the recommendation of its heritage commission, city council voted to move ahead with a program to come up with ways to breathe new life into Clarke between Kyle and Elgin streets.

Regarding the Queen Street Plaza, the commission report stated: “The plaza either needs to be activated or removed — one or the other. It’s flat, dead and unloved. It needs reasons for people to come and collect.”

It went on to outline several suggestions, including adding chess tables and chairs, and a proper stage area for entertainment.

The commission also made comments on “lighting, a lack of way-finding and historical information, a lack of a distinct character standards for the streetscape, and concerns regarding maintenance and upkeep both on city and private property.”

DANGER BAY ROAD Port Moody will get rid of the equivalent of 240 parking spaces to improve safety on

Bedwell Bay Road in the summer.

The city plans to ban parking on approximately 1,600 metres of the road adjacent to Sasamat Lake that connects to Belcarra.

Earlier this year, the village’s council notified Port Moody and its police force, Coquitlam RCMP and Metro Vancouver (operators of Belcarra Regional Park) that it was concerned the road had become dangerous because so many visitors to the

popular summer playground park on the road’s shoulder.

A report to Port Moody council said parking will still be available to about 475 m, the equivalent of 140 stalls, where the shoulder is wide enough and far enough away from the start of any slope. The report said no-parking signs will be installed next June to ensure the restrictions are in place for the summer months.

Port Moody mayoral candidate Rob Vagramov is apologizing after a video he filmed of himself shotgunning a beer with a homeless person in exchange for a sandwich surfaced earlier this week.

But his apology Thursday was a change from his comments Wednesday, the day after the video began circulating on social media.

The profanity-laden clip was recorded in 2014 — the year Vagramov was elected a city councillor — and shows the then-22-year-old with a man identified as Bob outside the Granville Street SkyTrain station in downtown Vancouv er.

The Editor, I noticed just before the official election period there were an inordinate number of pages in The Tri-City News dedicated to the city of Coquitlam advertising public hearings related to zoning bylaw changes, particularly building height amendments.

To me, this was an attempt to get things passed in the last days of a four-year term. That was the last term that developers may have expected to realize a good rate of return on their investment in council election campaigns. Though there are many loopholes, I sincerely hope the current donation rules somewhat level the playing field.

In case they don’t, I concur in large part with comments by letter writer Felix Thijssen (“‘Ruthless’ chopping will factor in voting,” The Tri-City News, Sept. 12). The gist of his letter was that if you do not like the way Coquitlam has changed, do not expect different results if you do not vote

The time to give our opinion to council about the future of the land held in trust by city councils for decades is now at hand.

For some reason, the current Port Moody council feels there is an urgent need for us citizens to make decisions that will last potentially forever regarding the current works yard and the former fire hall site without exploring the myriad wonderful options possible.

There is a push for us to decide whether to sell and forever surrender title to this beyond value land or lease it.

Neither option offers any potential for so many other options available were the city to retain title and enter into agreements with the provincial and/or federal governments to do such amazing things as provide affordable housing in an area so desperately in need. Our contribu-

Four more years of rule by a council whose majority has proven to be height-challenged concerns me. The challenge was met to formally allow 36-foot residential roofline heights, the highest in B.C. The challenge was met to formally allow, at 45% with no floor area ratio limit, the largest allowable residential lot coverage in B.C.

Concessions made by developers for “affordable” or fully accessible units by way of densification are far too few, yet get received with over-the-top enthusiasm by council. Coquitlam is now on par with Burnaby when it comes to demovictions

and real estate land assemblies.

It is time for a council meeting to end with “council directs staff” rather than “council votes in favour of the recommendation of staff that has had many meetings with developers and has watched many PowerPoint presentations.”

I don’t get to vote for staff. I can vote for a new council.

tion would be the land. Or to undertake providing seniors with housing and care. Or to develop on our own other much needed city amenities.

There appears to be a favourite choice already. We need more and taller towers, more traffic congestion, more demands on infrastructure.

Of course. To influence us we have seen the city produce news releases and information sessions that emphasize the “gifts” we’d receive (read: bonusing) to help us get over the angst of losing this great and wonderful treasure.

Please voters, send your voice and tell the council that neither choice is acceptable and ask council to have the courage and vision to do something much more worthy of all those who have gone before and those who have not yet been born. Vote against any choice at this time and let us all pitch in and help these “visionaries” arrive at more exciting and rewarding alternatives. Your vote is essential.

Two annual festivals in Port Coquitlam that received federal funding drew a combined 36,000 visitors this year.

But organizers from one event had to dip into reserves to balance the books while the other celebration came out in the red.

According to a staff report that went before the city’s healthy communities committee last month, the 95th May Day saw about 24,000 people come out for parade and other festivities from May 4 to 13.

But expenses were up due to the PoCo recreation complex

rebuild (food services were contracted out for the Royal Banquet with the Wilson Centre kitchen closed) and with the transfer of work from city supervisors to the new Community and Civic Events team.

The May Day grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage also dropped by $4,700 this year — from $12,900 to $8,200 — and $8,500 was pulled from the May Day Reserve Operation Budget to offset the costs and ensure the $45,000 budget stayed pat.

Meanwhile, the Canada Day party at Lions and Castle

parks drew an estimated 12,000 people, also a rise in attendance over last year.

Still, despite the $9,500 federal cash plus donations from Onni, Poco Inn and Suites, Harken Towing, Tidal Towing and the Gillnetter Pub — a total of $19,500 — the contributions weren’t enough to pay for the increased expenses for the stage, sound, entertainment and city labour, the report stated, as well as for the enhanced fencing around the fireworks set-up. Host a Coffee Break, raise Alzheimer’s cash Although World Alzheimer’s Month has just passed, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is still encouraging Tri-Cities residents to be a host in October for a Coffee Break event to raise funds for the organization.

The events can be as simple as offering a cup of coffee, tea or other treat in exchange for a donation. The society provides a complimentary kit with everything needed to get started, including the coffee.

“The fundraiser is truly a wonderful yet easy way for residents of the Tri-Cities to raise awareness about dementia, reduce stigma and make a difference in their community,” said Cathryn France, the

society’s director of resource development, in a news release.

In addition to being a Coffee Break host, businesses can request a Forget Me Not flower kit with cardboard cut-outs

from the society to raise funds and awareness.

The funds will support local programs and services for those affected by dementia, as well as research into its causes and cures.

Province launches probe into ‘dirty’ real estate money Joannah Connolly Glacier Syndicated

The B.C. government is launching its promised phasetwo investigation into money laundering in the province, this time focusing primarily on real estate, as well as luxury cars and horse racing.

The move follows the sweeping regulatory changes made in B.C.’s casinos in June, following a probe into money laundering in casinos by Peter German. At the time Attorney General David Eby said there would be a second phase investigation to prevent the potential “whack-a-mole” effect of more criminal money popping up in B.C. real estate.

In an announcement last Thursday, Eby made good on that promise with the launch of a “two-pronged review aimed at shutting down avenues for money laundering in real estate and other sectors.”

The province said that part one would be led by the Ministry of Finance, and would “identify systemic risks that leave the real estate and finan-

cial services sectors open to money laundering.”

The second part of the probe will be led by the attorney general and will “investigate specific case examples of problematic activity in real estate and other vulnerable sectors to uncover the ways that money launderers have operated in the province.”

Minister of Finance Carole James said: “Our overheated housing market can attract criminals and people wanting to abuse the system. When these people exploit loopholes, they drive up housing prices and help organized crime and drug dealers. That kind of activity has no place in our province, and we are taking action.”

In a media statement, the province said that German’s report into money laundering in casinos also raised concerns that “dirty money was infiltrating the real estate sector.”

“Our examination of money laundering in casinos uncovered troubling evidence suggesting strongly that dirty money is circulating in other places in our communities,” said Eby.

“The multi-faceted approach announced today is an attempt to move quickly to anticipate and shut down new avenues for money laundering, and to follow up on specific cases that Dr. German and the media have drawn to the public and government’s attention.”

The Ministry of Finance has hired criminal law expert and SFU professor Maureen Maloney to chair an advisory panel called the Expert Panel on Money Laundering in Real Estate. The panel will undertake part one of the twopronged probe and provide recommendations to the government by March 2019.

To tackle the second part, the attorney general has commissioned Dr. German to conduct a second review of money laundering that will “focus on identifying the scale and scope of verifiable illicit activity in the real estate market.” The government added that Dr. German’s analysis will also look at money laundering in horse racing and luxury cars. Dr. German’s report is also due by March 2019.

The Better Business Bureau points out only Christmas ranks higher in retail spending but with much of Halloween shopping being done on line consumers need to be wary of policies from seasonal stores and potential scams.

“There are number of seasonal stores that pop up this time of year,” said Evan Kelly, senior communications advisor for the regional BBB in a news release. “They may have some strict return policies that you need to be aware of.

Dynamic brings int’l. rep to local attraction Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News

Port Coquitlam’s Dynamic Attractions has built iconic and award-winning amusement theme park rides from Orlando to Shanghai.

Its next project will be located a little closer to home.

The company will begin work on a moveable skip for the Britannia Mine Museum’s new mill show that will demonstrate how equipment was hauled up the 20-storey structure.

“The Britannia Mine Museum is such a unique tourist attraction and their mill show will bring a new, exciting way for people to experience it,” said Hao Wang, president of the Dynamic Attractions. “This project has captured our imagination and we believe it will be thrilling for guests.”

In the late 1920s, the Britannia Mine was the largest copper producer in the British Empire, with more than 60,000 people living and working in the area before it was shuttered in 1974.

Since then, the site has become a museum and popular stop along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, with many visitors

coming each year to learn about the underground mine, old panning and machine shop.

While Dynamic Attractions has worked on projects around the world, Wang said this will be the first time the company has done something in Canada.

“We are looking forward to working on a local project, close to home, with the museum’s brilliant team,” Wang said.

“Together we will bring this historic 1920s mill structure back to life.”

According to a press release, the new mill show has been paid for with a $1.4-million grant from the federal government’s New Building Canada Fund along with $2.8 million the museum has fundraised from the mining industry and the provincial government.

The mill show, which is being produced by VISTA Collaborative Arts, will launch in the spring of 2019.

“We are excited to unveil the designs of our new mill show and share the significant role it played in B.C.’s and Canada’s history and economic success,” said Kirstin Clausen, executive director of the Britannia Mine Museum. “The show will transport visitors back in time for an

f your idea of a postworkout treat is a highprotein shake or thick fruit smoothie, you’re not Hamid Haji.

He heads for the freezer to scoop himself some ice cream.

In fact, the karate sensei and yoga instructor who runs ProFit Boot Camp in Port Moody with his wife, Kelly Pearce, loves the frozen dessert so much he embarked on a mission to make his own.

Fitness and indulgence don’t have to be mutually exclusive, said Haji, who has been part of the city’s fitness scene for 20 years.

“You limit yourself but you don’t have to cut yourself off,” he said. “Limitation makes the rewards sweeter.”

could. He and Pearce toured artisanal ice cream shops around the Lower Mainland, sampling their wares, chatting with staff and customers, trying to deconstruct their secrets.

Then the couple would put their findings and intuition to work in their kitchen and share the results with clients at their gym.

“They were our guinea pigs,” Pearce said.

Armed with their feedback, they’d head back on the road to source local, natural ingredients and return to the kitchen to experiment with new flavours and conquer new challenges, like concocting a vegan ice cream that doesn’t skimp on creaminess despite its lack of, well, cream.

At some point, Haji’s quest outgrew their counter and freezer space at home, so he and Pearce decided to convert a storage area at the back of their St. Johns Street gym into a white-tiled, stainless steel ice cream factory.

Several weeks ago, they christened it Vashti Rose (vashtiicecream.com), after

their eight-year-old daughter, and started offering the frozen fruits of their labour to the public, one or two scoops at a time.

For now, the ice cream shop, which joins in the Moody business landscape the hugely popular Rocky Point Ice Cream, which is located in the park of the same name, is only open on weekends as health regulations don’t allow Haji and Pearce to operate it at the same time people are sweating their workout in the adjoining gym.

But kids are free to burn off some of their ice cream-fuelled energy on the matted floor while their parents savour a scoop of salted caramel or cookies and cream at the expansive white countertop.

Haji said he and Pearce have developed more than 100 flavours but they put only 11 of them in rotation at a time. And they’re open to requests, which have already included toasted marshmallow, mint flake and even saffron. mbartel@tricitynews.com @mbartelTC

Try out your best ‘gruesome’ writing for story contest Spin a terrifying tale for Scary Story Contest

Halloween is just a few weeks away and Tri-City youths aged 11 to 18 can join the annual Scary Story Contest for a chance to win prizes and see their names in print.

The contest, as in past years, is put on

by Coquitlam and Port Moody public libraries, and is sponsored by The Tri-City News.

To participate in the contest, local kids must write a terrifying tale and submit it; then, a panel of judges will award first-, second- and third-place prizes to the three best entries in each of two age categories: 11 to 14 and 15 to 18 years.

Rules for the contest are as follows: • Each entry must be no longer than 500 words.

• Writers must live or go to school in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore or Belcarra.

• Writers who submit entries must be no younger than 11 and no older than 18 on the entry deadline date of Oct. 21.

It doesn’t matter what Metro Vancouver recording artist you’re talking to these days, there’s always one name that comes up in conversation: Ryan Worsley.

From Mathew V and Derrival — both of whom played concerts in the TriCities this summer — to bigger acts such as Dear Rouge and Said the Whale, Worsley is the one they point to for making their pop, rock or indie beats sound sweet.

The Terry Fox secondary grad had hoped to gain his reputation this way, by starting small then eventually expanding to suit the needs of his growing client list.

Now, he’s got singles on the radio and the Internet and has a roster that includes competition finalists and winners for the company he founded 12 years ago, Echoplant.

“It was a very intentional thing to be a producer,” started Worsley during an interview last week with his wife, Alana, the operations manager; head engineer Matt Di Pomponio, a Dr. Charles Best secondary grad; and intern Jake Schuster.

Worsley’s rise as the go-to producer, engineer and songwriter began after he dropped out of his classical music studies at Douglas College in New Westminster, after two years.

He got by with music gigs, playing the guitar at events and shows, but around 2007

he and Alana opened their first recording studio in a converted garage — a space of about 700 sq. ft. — at the back of their home; they named it Studio A. For eight years, Worsley built up the business — teaching himself the tricks of the trade — and performed and socialized with other musicians including Drew McTaggart, who in 2012 would form the electronic rock band Dear Rouge.

That year, before Dear Rouge won the Peak Performance Project, Worsley said he would hang out with other Peak musicians to drum up business for Echoplant.

The networking paid off with many artists heading over to cut tracks at Studio A. In 2013, Worsley had a part in producing Dear Rouge’s breakout hit, I Heard I Had, which charted at number 3 in alternative rock and won the 2015 SOCAN Songwriting Prize, a contest that honours the best songs by emerging musicians.

That success prompted the band to sign to the Canadian branch of Universal Music Group, with Worsley taking the lead recording reins on their debut album in 2015, Black to Gold, of which three more tracks cracked the Top 15 and earned them a Juno.

It was around this time Echoplant was “totally busting at the seems,” Alana Worsley recalled, and the couple found a former recording studio, called Vogville, on Tyner Street in Port Coquitlam, owned by music producer Jonathan Fluevog (the son of the famous Vancouver shoe designer).

Last month, the Tyner Street studio, which they call Studio B, saw the end of a year-long renovation project, half of which was paid for through a Creative BC government grant.

“We finally got the room looking how we wanted it,” Alana Worsley said, noting they did much of the heavy construction and acoustic additions themselves.

“For me, the biggest part of what we do is based around work flow. We want to welcome people to this creative production space,” Ryan Worsley explained.

Filling about 2,000 sq. ft. over two storeys, Studio B is comprised of three rooms on the ground level — the “dry room” with warm lighting and funky acoustic treatments to break up the sound; the “wet room” with a cathedral ceiling and stained glass church window; and the engineer’s room, controlling the sound. Musicians are in both of Echoplant’s studios every day, Alana Worsley said, with eight staff serving the clients; Ryan Worsley also has a manager who pitches work and handles the bigger contracts for recording, mixing and song writing.

“We are one of the busiest studios in Metro Vancouver,” said Alana Worsley, who is also an on-call music teacher in School District 43. “We are booked every day, all day and night. We want to be known as ‘The Studio.’”

ing its eye to post-production film work to tap into the booming industry in British Columbia. It has recruited Matthew Thomas, a musician, sound designer and editor as well as a member of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada to bring audio design and mixing into the two studios; podcasting for individual and corporate clients is another service Echoplant offers.

Blue Devils a target as defending champs The boys high school soccer season hits full stride this week Here’s how the AAA senior teams in the Tri-Cities stack up

are now seniors. And that’s got Kodiaks’ coach Mike Viveiros excited for their potential this season.

“This group of Grade 12’s is hungry and they want to get back to the quality that had them win the Fraser Valleys as juniors,” he said.

It’s an ambitious ask, as some of those players struggled as Grade 11’s last season.

Viveiros said they’re keen to show that was an anomoly.

“They are capable of a much more promising season.”

To fulfill that promise, Viveiros will look to big contributions from striker Ethan Gaddu and midfielder Tye Engmann, as well as Patrick Ruszczyk, who is returning to the team after playing in the Whitecaps residency program for a year.

The defending provincial champion Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils enter the season with a big hole in their lineup and a target on their back.

The hole is left by the graduation of star striker Quinn Desaulnier, who scored 10 goals in last year’s provincial finals, including the game winner in their 2-1 victory over Panorama Ridge in the championship match.

That lack of a game-breaker has challenged Blue Devils’ coach Dave Jones to craft an offence with a more balanced attack.

“We’ve got to be patient in our game,” Jones said. “It’s when you start taking chances you get exposed at the back.

If we stick to the game plan, those opportunities will come.”

Executing the plan will be eased by the return of a dozen veterans, half of them in defensive or mid-field positions.

“We’re very strong defensively,” Jones said.

So it’s little wonder the team’s leadership will come from centre back Cameron Poynton and mid-fielder Sam Bastow, who will share captain’s duties.

Up front, Jones said he’s hoping striker Nico Pietramala will be able to step up as a capable heir to Desaulnier’s offensive contributions.

“He’s a really good target man,” Jones said of Pietramala.

“He’s smart.”

“Most teams when they play us, it doesn’t take much to get them riled up,” Jones said.

It’s time for the Centaurs’ senior boys team to step out of the shadow of the girls’ team, which last June won the provincial championship.

“The senior boys are at a point where they want to get noticed as well,” said Centennial’s coach Kevin Comeau.

But it won’t be easy.

With the loss of Nick Catroppa to graduation and Emiliano Brienza to the

Vancouver Whitecaps’ residency program, Comeau said the young players filling their void will look to veterans like striker Joshua Jung and team captain Guilliano Banco for leadership.

Comeau said Jung will be one of the Centaurs’ main scoring threats on a team that otherwise lacks a big scorer.

“We are going to need to score by committee,” he said.

Despite the loss of two of its top players from last season, the Terry Fox Ravens still have a lineup deep with experienced seniors who coach John Murphy expects will be the heart of his team.

Last year’s leading scorer, Andrew Peat, is now at the University of the Fraser Valley

and centre back Jaxon Bain graduated to Douglas College.

That’s opened the door for seniors like Jacob York, Christian Barbato, Mateo Morello, Mathew Garofalo and Shayne Grinwis to use their experience, composure and talent to fill the leadership void.

Murphy said he’ll also be looking for a bigger contribution from Grade 11 players Ighsaan Mohamed and twin brothers Cole and Bailey Newton.

But a wild card in the Ravens’ aspirations for the season could be the loss of starting goalkeeper Shayne Grinwis, who will miss several games when his Coquitlam MetroFord U17 club team competes at the Toyota national championships that begin in Surrey today (Wednesday).

To say the Talons are young would be an understatement.

The team lost its entire senior roster that went to the Fraser Valleys last year to graduation.

That throws the burden of leadership to a core of players from the junior team who were called upon late last season to step in to replace injured players on the senior team, said coach Roberto Ramogida.

“It gave some of our junior players valuable experience that we are hoping will help them be successful this season,” he said.

Leading them by example will be Alonso Alva, who sparked his Port Moody 01 Selects club team to the semifinals of the Provincial Premier Cup last summer.

Edwards said Alva is a “passionate player” who “outworks everyone around him.”

That kind of effort will be needed from all parts of the pitch if the Blues are to have success, Edwards said.

“I think it’s more about heart and effort.”

With half the Pinetree Timberwolves’ starting lineup in Grade 9 or 10, head coach Steve Jack said he’ll look to his core of Grade 12 veterans to provide leadership, and goals.

Especially the latter.

“We always struggle to score goals,” Jack said. “We will need to score by committee.”

The Coquitlam Express will be going for their seventh win in a row tonight at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex where they’ll host the Surrey Eagles at 7 p.m..

A win over the Eagles would also give Coquitlam sole possession of first place in the BC Hockey League’s Mainland division, ahead of the Chilliwack Chiefs, whom the Express will face on Friday.

It’s been a while since the Express were able to use terms

like “win streak” and “first place.”

Coquitlam extended the former and grabbed a share of the latter with a pair of victories on home ice last weekend.

The Express beat the Langley Rivermen, 5-2, on Friday, and on Sunday they defeated the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings, 3-1, avenging a pair of losses earlier in the season in Prince George.

In fact, that’s the last time the Express lost.

Sunday, Alex DiPaolo’s unassisted power play goal in the first period and Chase Danol’s shorthanded goal eight minutes into the second period gave the Express a lead they never relinquished.

Against the Rivermen, the Express led 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 at the end of the second. Five different players scored for Coquitlam, including Danny Pearson who added an assist.

Province launches probe into ‘dirty money’ in B.C. real estate The B.C. government is launching its promised phase-two investigation into money laundering in the province, this time focusing primarily on real estate, as well as luxury cars and horse racing.

The move follows the sweeping regulatory changes made in B.C.’s casinos in June, following a probe into money laundering in casinos by Dr. Peter German. At the time, Attorney General David Eby said there would be a second phase investigation to prevent the potential “whack-a-mole” effect of more criminal money popping up in B.C. real estate.

In an announcement September 27, Eby made good on that promise with the launch of a “two-pronged review aimed at shutting down avenues for

money laundering in real estate and other sectors.”

The province said that part one would be led by the Ministry of Finance, and would “identify systemic risks that leave the real estate and financial services sectors open to money laundering.”

The second part of the probe will led by the Attorney General, and will “investigate specific case examples of problematic activity in real estate and other vulnerable sectors to uncover the ways that money launderers have operated in the province.”

exploit loopholes, they drive up housing prices and help organized crime and drug dealers. That kind of activity has no place in our province, and we are taking action.”

In a media statement, the province said that Dr. German’s report into money laundering in casinos also raised concerns that “dirty money was infiltrating the real estate sector.”

Eby said, “The multi-faceted approach announced today is an attempt to move quickly to anticipate and shut down new avenues for money laundering, and to follow up on specific cases that Dr. German and the media have drawn to the public and government’s attention.”

Reports from both aspects of the investigation are due March 2019.

MAILLOUX, Michael (Mike) August 7, 1956 − September 16, 2018 Mike was predeceased by his parents, father Ray and cherished mother Noreen. Mike also lost a younger brother Ernie before his time. Mike is survived by siblings Rosemarie and Jack; nieces Tiffany and Alyssa; nephews Jack Jr and Tyler; son Mike; daughter−in−law Christine; and his beloved grandchildren Veronica, Jerome, and Liam.
