Another poppy donation box has been stolen in Coquitlam.

Laurie Chapman, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 263’s poppy fund chair, told The Tri-City News Wednesday that the latest theft occurred at the Coquitlam Public Library’s City Centre branch Tuesday evening. She said anywhere from $100 to $200 could have been in the container when it was taken.

“The money is for the veterans that fought for us for have what we have today,” she said. “I find it quite disgusting that someone would take that money.”

Donations collected go toward assisting veterans and their families, Chapman said.

And while the Coquitlam RCMP has been notified, she is not holding out much hope that the Legion will be able to get the money back.

T

here’s a quaint cemetery near Wanquentin, a bucolic village tucked into the northwest corner of France next to the Belgium border and not far from the English Channel. Buried in Plot II, Row E, side-by-side, are 23 men from the Third Canadian Machine Gun Battalion. They had been billeted in a home in the area when they were killed during a German bombing raid on a nearby train station on Sept. 24, 1918. It was less than seven weeks from the end of what was called, a century ago, the Great War. One headstone bears the name of Charles Goheen.

“When you see your own name on a headstone, that gets you. That’s hard,” says Port Coquitlam’s John Goheen, reflecting on his great-grandfather’s youngest brother as he sits in the shadow of Port Coquitlam’s cenotaph on an idyllic autumn morning 100 years after the War to End All Wars.

The sunny setting is a long way from the First World War. It was a brutal and bloody fouryear conflict that claimed more than 15 million lives — nearly 67,000 of them Canadians — and left tens of millions more wounded. The armistice at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — Nov. 11, 1918 — inspired Remembrance Day. On the 100th anniversary of that day, Goheen will lay a wreath on behalf of all Canadians during the nationally televised Remembrance Day ceremony from Ottawa.

The Royal Canadian Legion chose the 32-year member of the organization, he says, because of the extensive research he has done and continues to do on both world wars, the work he has done for the Legion (he leads its biannual Pilgrimage of Remembrance group trip to Europe), and his familial connections to the wars.

“I was quite humbled, actually,” says Goheen of the invita-

tion. “I immediately thought, because it was for someone with a personal connection, thought of my grandfather and other relatives. We had two that didn’t come home. My grandfather came home and he was never the same. So it was an immediate personal thought, then followed by being quite

overwhelmed because of the magnitude of it all.”

The genesis of his passion came about in the early 1970s, when he was about seven. His father took him to a Remembrance Day ceremony at Victory Square in Vancouver where he was in awe of the Great War veterans there.

“They seemed ancient at the time,” said Goheen, a principal at Rochester elementary school in Coquitlam. “I was struck by them, and I remember coming home and wanting to know about them. I was a serious little kid who started to read and learn things, probably a touch of OCD as well. I took this idea

where I wanted to know everything about something, and the next thing I know, I’ve amassed a library. I just started researching like crazy.”

Along with all the war stories Goheen discovered that although he’s not from a military family, both sides of his clan were connected to war. Charles Goheen had a cousin, Walter Goheen, who survived three years on the western front only to die Oct. 1, 1918 when his unit got caught in machine gun fire on its final mission. His body was never found. Walter William Goheen is listed as

one of the missing on the Vimy Ridge memorial.

Goheen’s maternal grandfather, Francis Niles, joined the Canadian First World War armed forces three weeks after he turned 17, telling recruiters he was 18. His actual 18th birthday, March 16, 1916, was his first day on the front lines in Belgium. A little less than three weeks later, April 1, enemy fire took a four-inch chunk out of the back of his leg and his war was over.

Niles’ brother Robert was conscripted in 1918 but became ill in London. He had recovered by the time the war ended and was seconded to the war graves commission afterward to recover bodies from the muck on the western front.

Robert Niles’ son, also named Robert, was killed in the Second World War on June 17, 1944 when the plane he was on returning from a bombing mission was attacked by a night fighter and crashed into the North Sea. As well, Goheen’s paternal grandfather, Raymond Goheen, fought in the Second World War. John Goheen’s research drove him to join the Royal Canadian Legion when he was 19 — he is currently a member of Branch 133 in Port Coquitlam — where he got to know a few veterans from both wars.

“I kept my mouth shut and used my ears. They’re very guarded, typically, but once they know you’re not a threat and don’t want anything, they started to include me.

“They start telling you real stories about the things that happened to them that you usually don’t share. I became close to a number of them,” says Goheen, who received a Minister of Veterans Affairs commendation in 2012.

In 1992, for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, he tracked down three Great War veterans.

“I treasure those moments.

It was really a unique experience. I was mindful then that this was not going to happen much longer, that these guys were slipping fast,” says Goheen, who notes the last veteran of the Great War died in 2005. see WREATH, page 6

“Just trying to voice the name again is quite powerful.

“There’s an intimacy about them that you realize where you’re standing [in the fields of France and Belgium] where so much horror happened. And you also realize where you’re standing is a graveyard. The missing are still out there and

In his opinion, the First World War gets lost in the monstrous shadow cast by Adolf Hitler and the Second World War. “It was a major event in this country and yet a couple of [decades] later when the Second World War becomes much of the focus, the Great War just sort of took a back seat,” Goheen said. “It really stayed that way into the ’60s when historians started looking back at the Great War, but it was with a certain angle. Great War poetry became well-known. It was much about the irony of the Great War, the tragedy of the Great War, the innocents being led to the slaughter.”

But in the last 10 years, he says, the approach has changed to viewing WWI having a cause and a purpose. The role of Canadians was instrumental, especially considering it was a country of only 7.5 million people going from having no real military to speak of to being “pretty much the best” from 1917 onward. he says. For example, he points out that Canada lost 20% of its casualties during the war’s last three months as it launched one major assault after another on the Germans. Canadian commander General Arthur Currie boasted afterward the Canadians battled one quar-

“It is true, they took on 47 German divisions, and [Canada] had just four,” says Goheen. “They paid a huge price but it kind of broke the Germans’ backs and allowed the Allies to advance on other fronts. The Canadian contribution was huge for punching way above its weight, and it’s forgotten.”

He hasn’t forgotten, and when he leads the Pilgrimages of Remembrance, he makes a point of reading every inscription on every headstone.

they’re still finding them every year. When they do roadwork and construction, they’re finding remains. Our group has come across remains over there. It’s gruesome.

“In Belgium alone there’s about 40,000 missing, and that’s a small area. They’re still there.”

So while he’ll be thinking of his relatives when he does the honours Sunday in Ottawa, he won’t forget all the others either.

“The wreath is to represent all those killed in the Great War, so while it’s a personal part of it for me, I’m cognizant it’s for all of them.”

When he returns, Goheen will continue to tell the war stories he has discovered and to explore for more with the hope lessons will be learned.

“That’s the whole point of education about these matters, that anyone who looks at it realizes there’s no glory in it at all. There’s vile things that humans can do. Veterans are the first persons to tell you there’s no glory in it. It’s about understanding what had happened, the huge sacrifices made and that freedom and peace come at a huge price.” newsroom@tricitynews.com

Valerie Julian is about to say goodbye to St. Andrews United Church in Port Moody — for the second time.

This time, the circumstances will be much better than Julian’s first farewell, when the church on St. Johns Street burned down a few days after she got married there in 1955.

Julian, 85, will be among the dozens of parishioners past and present who will be attending a celebration of the church building tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon as the congregation prepares to move to temporary digs at Kinsight in Port Coquitlam beginning Dec. 2. They’ll be there for about two years while the old structure is demolished and a four-storey affordable housing complex — which will include office space for Kinsight and Share Family and Community Services, along with a 540-square metre home for the church is erected in its place.

Julian said she’ll miss the convenience of the current church, which is a short walk from her home. But the redevelopment of the site to

She said back then, Sunday school skating parties, games nights and dances in the lunch room at the nearby Flavelle cedar mill, and the rousing choir practises when the aging Scottish minister just couldn’t keep up with the youthful

voices, created a welcoming warmth that has been a constant in her life.

That sense of open-armed acceptance is what Amy Carruthers said attracted her to the church when she recently returned to Port Moody after several difficult years away.

She was pregnant with her first child and single but the church’s community was instantly supportive, helping her get settled, ensuring she could make it to appointments. And that didn’t stop when her son,

David, was born four months ago. In fact, she said, he’s the apple of the congregation’s eye.

“They helped me feel connected,” Carruthers said.

Building those connections and nurturing them to create community have always been what St. Andrews has been about, said its pastor, Julie LeBrun. That’s what led the church to get involved with the Tri-Cities Bridge Shelter program a number of years ago to provide emergency shelter, food and dry clothes for up to

30 homeless people a night.

The program ended in 2015 but it planted a seed in the church’s community to find its own way to address the affordable housing crisis, which ultimately led to its partnership with Kinsight, Share and Catalyst Community Developments Society, a Vancouver-based non-profit that specializes in working with community organizations and municipal governments to build affordable rental homes.

Peter deGroot admits he was hesitant when St. Andrews first opened the doors of its basement hall to homeless people but once he started talking with some of them and learning their stories, he jumped in to help as a volunteer for seven years.

“We were helping people and it’s about looking after the less fortunate,” he said, adding that feeling of fellowship in the church is so strong, he and his wife, Diane, have continued to attend St. Andrews even as

they moved from Coquitlam’s Maillardville neighbourhood to Pitt Meadows, where they live a five-minute walk from another United church.

LeBrun said the St. Andrews community extends far beyond the 80 or so members of its congregation to include those people who attend programs like 12-step addictions counselling.

“People connect to the church in ways that are meaningful to themselves,” she said.

She added that she’s confident the connections will stay strong despite the upheaval expected over the next two years.

The congregation, she said, has a can-do spirit that causes it to embrace every challenge that comes along, including its innovative solution to help ease some of the region’s housing affordability challenges.

“This project says ‘yes’ to life,” she said. “My role is not to be afraid and to just go with it.” mbartel@tricitynews.com @mbartelTC

Surrey couple facing mail theft charges Mail addressed to TC residents found in Surrey home Diane StranDberg The Tri-CiTy News

Charges have been laid against a Surrey couple in relation to a series of mail thefts that have plagued Tri-City residents for months.

Bags of mail and Canada Post materials stolen from community mailboxes and other residential mailboxes were recovered at a Surrey home Oct. 11 and a 49-year-old man and a 40-year-old women have been charged with multiple offences.

It is not known whether all the mail seized has been returned to the owners but Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said some has been returned while other mail needed for evidence is being photographed and catalogued. “The process of returning things has already started and it will continue,� said McLaughlin, who acknowledged that mail theft is a constant source of frustration and concern, with the recent charges likely relating

He said Canada Post was a major part of the investigation. “This was an effective interagency project and Canadian postal inspectors provided crucial expertise,� McLaughlin said in a press release. “Once a primary suspect was identified, the Coquitlam RCMP Prolific Target Team made the arrests and then used search warrants

to gather a large amount of evidence. “The suspects are believed to be responsible for a large number of identity and mail theft over an extended period.�

Heine Hut, who is wellknown to police and Canada Post, is facing two counts of theft of mail, one count of unlawful use of a mail key, one count of possession of stolen mail, and two counts of possession of a stolen credit card.

Charlene Saar, who was arrested with Hut at his home in Surrey, is facing one count of theft of mail, one count of possession of stolen mail, one count of unlawful use of a mail key and two counts of a possession of a stolen credit card.

Mail theft is a common problem and police recommend people collect their mail daily, use Canada Post’s Hold Mail service to suspend delivery while away and file a change of address with Canada Post when moving as well as with banks and other financial institutions. Flood forces Fox library into rec centre pop-up Grant GranGer The Tri-CiTy News

Flooding has forced Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Library to be creative and flexible so a makeshift facility has been set up in a makeshift area.

Last Thursday evening, water began seeping into the library, covering the carpet. But before declaring it’s safe to return, testing has to be conducted and that could take a while, said library manager Kimberley Constable.

When the shutdown lasted through the weekend, library and PoCo city staff put their heads together and decided to set up a pop-up library in the lobby of the adjacent PoCo rec complex. The lobby has already been home recently to makeshift facilities as the complex undergoes major renovations.

“We’re really disappointed

to be closed for so long and to know our customers are too,” Constable told The Tri-City News. “We wanted to be able to provide services as best we can. “[The library services] will be limited but we’re hoping people will come and hang out. We miss them and I know they’ve told us on social media they miss us.”

The library staff aren’t moving everything over but any books on hold that were ready for pick-up starting Nov. 6 will be available at the pop-up for those who reserved them.

Returns can also be made and there will be a small collection to check out.

The pop-up will be open today (Friday) and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. but will be closed for Remembrance Day Sunday and Monday.

KEEP DRAINS CLEARED, AVOID FLOODS With more rain in the forecast next week, the city of Coquitlam is asking residents to take steps to help mitigate flood risks in their neighbourhoods.

Public works crews have been ensuring drainage intakes and critical catch basins remain unclogged and individual citizens can also help.

The city is asking residents to clean their foundation drains and sumps, which can become blocked with leaves and dirt that needs to be flushed out. When they’re clogged, water can build up and flood as it is directed to the city’s storm sewer system.

People can help mitigate water backups by clearing any ditches or culverts along their property that may be clogged.

They should also should refrain from blowing leaves from private property onto city streets.

Any person who witnesses issues with the city’s drainage system can call Coquitlam’s 24-hour engineering line at 604927-3500.

The city of Coquitlam is pushing back against several assertions made by a developer about its plans for the Fraser Mills site in southwest Coquitlam.

During a presentation last week to the Real Estate Institute of BC, David Roppel, Beedie Living’s director of residential development, said plans for the riverfront project included 16 acres of park space, 118 marketrental units and 117 belowmarket rental units.

But Jim McIntyre, Coquitlam’s GM of planning and development, said some of the numbers are still being discussed and that any final agreements for the site would be subject to public consultation. “The project is still in review,” he said.

“It hasn’t had the full-blown public consultation process yet.

That is all to come.”

One area of disagreement between the city and the developer appears to be how much park space will be included in the project. According to Beedie’s Fraser Mills website, the area will include “16 acres of public park, a state-of-the-art public aquatic and recreation centre, comprehensive pedestrian and bike trails, pier, plaza... and other amenities.”

McIntyre said the amount of parkland proposed is actually much smaller because Beedie’s 16-acre figure includes 6.9 acres of environmental preservation areas, including 1.9 acres of riparian space around Como Creek and five acres of greenway habitat compensation.

“Under federal and provincial government legislation, this green space protection would be required of any development,” McIntyre said.

“The true usable park total is about 9.4 acres.”

In a follow-up email, Roppel acknowledged that while much of the land will be used for open spaces, including a foreshore walkway, riverfront park and riverfront plaza, some of the 16 acres includes riparian planting.

McIntyre said any talk about hard numbers around market and below-market rental housing is premature, noting that the figures are still under discussion. There is also a disagreement over the size of a public aquatic complex Beedie would be required to provide as part of the development.

While Roppel and Beedie’s website state the facility is expected to be 40,000 sq. ft., the number has yet to be finalized and is still part of negotiations.

At completion, the 95-acre Fraser Mills development is expected to contain 4,700 residential units in 16 to 18 towers.

The project is also expected to include employment space for at least 1,500 jobs.

The referenced story incorrectly reported that Beedie Living’s Fraser Mills development planned in southwest Coquitlam would have 13,000 sq. ft. of commercial/retail space. In fact, while the final number is still being negotiated, it is expected to be significantly higher, creating enough floor space for at least 1,500 jobs. The article also stated that an aquatic centre included in the project would be 30,000 sq. ft. Who litters and why?

It’s a frustrating issue as tonnes of garbage is dumped each year on city streets, in lanes and along boulevards in the form of discarded furniture, cigarette butts, needles, fast-food wrappers, beer cans, dog waste bags and other detritus.

Luckily, there are volunteers who adopt streets, pick up needles and clean shorelines to remove some of this junk. but why do people dump it?

Could there be more solutions? already, fraser Health is trying to make a difference with needle-collection boxes in handy locations; Port Coquitlam is collecting dog waste; the austin Heights business Improvement association in Coquitlam is taking responsibility for cigarette butts; and local and senior governments do some litter clean-up,too.

Maybe there should be more enforcement.

It’s not oK that we turn our planet into a giant trash heap. a hard-nosed campaign helped Coquitlam reduce early set-out of garbage that was attracting bears — including fines and education. Maybe it’s time the cities got tough with litterbugs, too.

Too few will decide in B.C. referendum b

ritish Columbians have now begun to cast the ballots to keep our current first-pastthe-post (fPTP) system or adopt one of three new models of proportional representation (PR).

The bC Chamber of Commerce isn’t against PR, per se, but given how unclear the referendum process has been, we urge british Columbians to vote No. a referendum of this magnitude VAL LITWIN needs to be simple and straightforward, and it should provide the clarity citizens need to make an informed decision. unfortunately, the reform question does anything but.

This vote is presented as a single referendum but there are actually two changes on the table: the first between our current system and the broader theory of PR; the second between three possible models, two of which have never been tested anywhere.

This process is needlessly complex and does not provide an apples-to-apples choice of which method is best for the province.

There hasn’t been adequate education on how each model works and what each outcome would mean. during the lead-up to the vote, there was a lack of engagement with the public. In the 2005 referendum, a Citizens’ assembly worked together with the public, experts and indigenous communities to develop a single, straightforward choice for the ballot question. The current referendum saw no such process.

This vote is at a clear disadvantage to other votes on electoral reform. The 2005 and 2009 referenda required 60% approval overall, and a simple majority approval in 60% of the ridings. This threshold ensured broad public support and provided legitimacy to a new system.

The current referendum requires just a 50% plus one majority for success. Lowering the threshold and removing the need for a majority of electoral ridings creates a system that only a slim majority support.

The mail-in ballot makes the low threshold even more worrisome. during the b.C. indigenous treaty referendum in 2002, only 35.8% of ballots were returned. The 2015 Metro vancouver Transportation and Transit referendum saw only 48.6%. If these voter turnouts are replicated, a mere 18% to 24% of the electorate could dictate a change. and, as this is a two-step ballot, the num-

This division of the votes may further undermine the legitimacy of the results, especially in rural and Interior communities, where voices could be silenced by larger, urban populations.

When it comes down to it, the merits and pitfalls of our electoral system are always open for discussion, but b.C.’s stable democratic institutions give our province a competitive edge. It’s only fair that voters have a clearly understood choice, and a process so robust that everyone can trust it.

Hundreds of School District 43 high school students sat silent Wednesday as they listened to the survival stories of Mariette Doduck, a Jewish woman who spent her childhood on the run in Belgium, Holland and Germany, during the Second World War to avoid the fate of millions of Jews who were killed in the Holocaust.

The event was the 11th annual Holocaust symposium organized by Dr. Charles Best teacher Ken Ipe to inspire students to take action against genocide and participate in a candle lighting ceremony in remembrance of Holocaust victims.

Held at Coquitlam Alliance Church in Coquitlam, the symposium had mournful overtones given that it was held 12 days after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in which 11 people were killed and seven injured during Shabbat morning services at the Tree of

“Just respect each other for who you are,” urged Doduck, who said one of the things she learned in her life is that people can be kind, even in difficult circumstances.

Doduck was four years old when she was sent to live with a family to avoid being reported to the Nazis and, though she saw members of her family later in life and periodically during the war, she never lived with them again and wasn’t allowed to speak to them or acknowledge who they were.

Now living in Canada, Doduck said the students should appreciate the freedom under which they live and not be abusive or bullying to each other over race and language.

“You can be a leader of this country,” she reminded the students.

In recounting her story, Doduck described moments of terror when bombs were being dropped near her and Gestapo agents nearly found her hidden in a sewer in a Catholic orphanage.

But she also said she felt guilty after relaying a message to the mayor of a Dutch town about the arrival of the German Gestapo only to see him later with bloodied fingers and toes.

“That was a guilt I kept for a long time.”

Through the efforts of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Doduck was brought to Canada along with other

Jewish orphans and raised by a member of a Vancouver Jewish congregation. Though she missed school during wartime, Doduck, whose maiden name was Rosen, quickly rose through the grades because she had taught herself to read and write and could speak several languages.

Eventually, she helped start up the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre in part to overcome prejudice toward

the Jewish community in Canada.

Future generations need to educate themselves so they can prevent future abuses, Doduck said.

are confident to press on the attack and generate scoring opportunities, which they did successfully 38 times this season, Chin said.

“We try to support one another and create options in the passing lane,” she said, adding the team’s simple game plan is by design. “We work together as a team.”

The Kodiaks are being joined at provincials by their district rivals from Centennial and Dr. Charles Best.

Success will come to the team that works hardest and is able to finish the opportunities it’s able to create, Chin said.

A 3-0 loss to South Delta in the Fraser Valley girls field hockey final may have been the best thing for the Heritage Woods Kodiaks before next week’s provincials, says the team’s coach, Raquel Chin.

The Kodiaks entered the climactic showdown against the perennial powerhouse on a roll, with nine wins and two draws in district play and the earlier rounds of the regional championship.

But that success came at a price, said Chin. The players were tired and they were due a bit of a check to see where they stood heading into provincials that begin next Wednesday at Tamanawis and Cloverdale Athletic parks in Surrey.

“We needed to lose,” said Chin, who’s been part of the Kodiaks’ revival for two seasons after the team almost ceased to exist in 2016. “How you bounce back from a loss will define us.”

Already the Kodiaks have exceeded preseason expectations, she said. Winning the district title was an improvement on last year’s third-place finish, they matched their runner-up status at Fraser Valleys and now they’re looking to do better at provincials, where they placed 13th in 2017.

“If we can just do better, that’s not a bad goal to have,” Chin said.

The Simon Fraser University Clan men’s soccer team is the top seed heading into the West Region playoffs of the NCAA Div II national championship tournament.

That’s earned the Clan, who lost only once all season and amassed 16 wins in a row to capture its third consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship, a bye into the second round, which will be played Saturday at Interbay Stadium in Seattle, Wash.

SFU will meet the winner of fourth-ranked Fresno Pacific and the fifth seed, Cal Poly Pomona.

The latter is a bit of a nemesis for the Clan as the Broncos have ousted SFU from the NCAA playoffs the past two seasons. Earlier this season, the Clan defeated the Broncos 3-0 in a regular season match.

The Clan’s offence has been powered by Coquitlam sophomore Matteo Polisi, who’s scored 18 times and totalled 47 points. In fact, the team’s offence that averaged 3.39 goals a match is third best in the NCAA and it was just one of four to score more than 60 goals.

Defensively, keeper Luciano Trasolini and backup Aidan Bain, from Port Coquitlam, have conceded just seven goals. Bain earned a clean sheet in his only starting appearance.

“I thought we put together a very good regular season and we were rewarded for it,” said Clan head coach Clint Schneider of his side’s top ranking.

“But none of that means anything unless we win games in the national tournament.”

The NCAA Div II national championship tournament will be held Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 at Slippery Rock University in Pittsburgh, Penn.
