It will be thelast board meeting beforethe2022 municipalelection— setfor Oct. 15. Theoffices were controversialwhenthe board of education approved a $36-million budgetbackin 2018, with sometrustees suggestingthe potwastoo large. However, thecosts came inlessthanprojected. If constructed today, the Education LearningCentre mayhave costbetween$42 million and $46 million, accordingto Hoff. Thenewfacilitywas paidfor with revenuefrom landsales at Coronation Park Elementary,as well as revenue realized from leasingformer schoolsalong withoperationalsurpluses, mostlyfrominternational educationfees.
Meanwhile,Coquitlam Alternative Basic Education (CABE)students will be attending classes this fall nextdoor at Winslow Centre afterafire damagedtheir building. CABE willeventually move backtotheiroriginal location, but Hoff says the timeline is not absolute. It isanticipatedthat it will belatefall or early2023before students move back. TheEditor: In 2020,Coquitlamcity council requestedinput from my neighbourhood regardinganewcommunity centreto replacethe existing building. The plansshowed a paved openspaceforcivic activitytowardLaval Square. Two years later—and beforethecentreis even open—the mayorandcity councilare rezoning the openarea from P-1Civic InstitutionaltoRM-2ThreeStorey Medium Density Apartmentfor seniors living. Onlythreeshort letters opposingthe rezoning were presented at the publichearingheld on July25,2022, although considerablymore were written. It seems apparentthat the agendawas setlong before anyinputwas requested. Oppositionto this project doesnot resultfromthe “nimby” syndrome. Aquick searchforall typesof seniorslivingin Coquitlamshowsaninordinate concentration alreadyexistin southwesternCoquitlam. On July22,2022,the Tri-City News reported Coquitlamcity councilis consideringa 20-storey notfor-profittower of seniors accommodationon Austin Avenue, alocationthat is oneblock westofandonly afewnorthoftheLaval Squarelocation. Theproposedsitefor seniorsaccommodationnear Laval Squareis not ona bus routeand, whilenotfar from existing busstops, it is uphill and poorly clearedofsnow and ice in the winter. This makesit dangerous for everyone, butimpassable for thosechallenged with mobilityissues. In fact, itisoftenimpossibletodriveupLaval Street in the winter, so howemergency vehicles willaccess the proposed buildingis not clear.
Whilethereexistsa province-wide shortageoffamily doctors, who will service the needsof so many additional seniors concentratedin such asmallarea? No clinicis takingnewpatientsandthe walk-inlocationsare very restricted. The Austin Avenuesite proposedfor seniors’living is servedmedically and by transit, whilethe Cartier Avenue/Laval Squaresite offersneither. Inmy opinion, thisproposallacks foresightfrom a senior’s perspectiveand it appearsasif mayorand councilarenot considering theneedsof seniors when cramming themallintothis area. JANISCLEUGH jcleugh@tricitynews.com Kyrst Hogan, aka BurgundyBrixx, hasquite a storytoshare. Andshe’ll soonbe doing that ona Vancouver stage. During theCOVID-19 pandemic, Hogan, a cabaret performerwho livesin Port Coquitlam, switchedto a new doctor after her general practitioner retired. She went infora routine colonoscopy, whichuncoveredatumour in hercolon. “I wasshocked,”she said. “My firstfearwasthat it spreadto my ovaries.” Like hermother, who had ovarian cancer, Hogan had mutationsinthe BRCA2 gene, butshetook good care ofherself to avoid the disease. However, the cancer hadn’ttouched Hogan’s ovaries. Instead,it attacked herliver. Last year, she hadthe tumour surgically removed fromher colon. Sixmonthsofchemotherapyensuedand,in February of this year, sheunderwent anoperationonherliver Her right ovarywasalso taken out. Formost people, the rapidjourney to Stage 4 colon cancer and the medical proceduresthat followed can bephysicallydebilitating andemotionally exhausting. But Hogan neverlether spirit waver. Afterthefirstsurgery, she startedtowrite abouther cancerexperiences “becauseI have tofind humour ineverything to cope with it,” she said. At first, herstories were blogs that family andfriends read. Thenshe dreamedbigger: Whynotturn the material into a theatricalshow? Thoughherwritingwas stillinthe works, Hogan applied tothe Vancouver Fringe Festivalinthe middle ofchemotreatments. She got in. “Itwaslikethe universe telling methat itwastime totell my story,” shesaid. “I didn’tknowwhat theend would be, buttheshow gave mefocusandalotofstability and directionwhileIwas going througheverything. It’s been very healing.” Hershow, titled The C-Word, isamixoftales, musicaltheatre, burlesqueand comedy about battling cancer—an illnessthat affects two outoffive Canadians during theirlifetimes. Shehopes theproduction willdraw people who have had cancer,as well as anyone who hasor hadaloved one with cancer. Hogan calledit The C-Word “becausewe’re allafraidtosayit outloud, butIthinkitneeds tobe addressedandtalked about more freely. Youneed to find thelevityin some of these moments.”
Today, Hoganisn’ttechnically in remission, but doctors have been encouragingasthey seeher results. She gets regular scans, takes supplementsprescribed by a naturopathand keepsher energy up. “Ineverstopped working the whole time,” Hogansaid, adding, “Mymentor atmy universitywasa nunwho lived untilshewas99. She was sharpandalwaysstayed busy.” During thepandemic and at the startof her cancer journey, theentertainer performedsingingtelegrams aroundthe Lower Mainland. “I wasbringingjoyto somebody’slife, whichhealed me at thesametime.” Still, she recognizes cancer will be withher forthe rest of herlife. “Themortality rate is so much lowerthanit usedto bebecause the research has advanced,”shesaid.“My progressisgood. I’m going to become that old woman withthesilver, braided hair.”
