OnTuesday(Sept.20), BCSupremeCourtJustice MarthaDevlinadjourned thefour-dayhearingtothe weekafterThanksgiving, Oct.11–14,becausethe leadprosecutor,Louise Kenworthy,testedpositive thatmorningforCOVID-19.

Kenworthyappearedby videoasthejudge,thethree otherprosecutorsandthree defencecounselmetin Courtroom209attheNew WestminsterLawCourtson whatwassupposedtobethe firstdayofthesentencing hearings.

AydinCoban,44,ofthe Netherlands,wasalsoin theprisoner’sboxtohear thejudge’sdecisiononthe delay.

Dressedinthesamenavy blueshirtandblackpants heworeduringthe10-week jurytrial,Cobanshowedno emotionasthesentencing datesweremoved.

Cobanisconvictedonfive counts:

Still,“I’mhoping,with alltheevidence,thatJustice Devlincanmakeagooddecisionthatwe’llallbehappy with.”

Askedbythe Tri-City News whatthatwouldbefor her,CarolToddresponded, “It’sacloseofachapter becausethere’smorework tobedoneintheareasof exploitationandsextortion onchildrenandpredators aroundtheworld.

“Whatthatlookslikefor meisAydinCobanwillbe keptinprisonandoffthe streets.Hewon’tbethereto re-offend,andchildrenwill besaferformanyyearsto come.

“That,inmyheart,is what’sbeendrivingme, isthathewillcontinueto beincarceratedinprison andwecanallsleepabit sounder;however,[like]Mr. Coban,therearethousands ofpredatorsouttherethat weneedtomakepeople awareof;andhoweasyit istofalldownthathole, howeasyitistoconvincea childjusttobefriendlywith someoneonlineandthen moveintothenextstages.”

Duringthetrial,thejury heardhowCobanhadlured AmandaToddonline,startinginNovember2009when shewas11,convincedher toexposeherselfanddistributedthoseimagestoher friendsandfamilyviaher socialmediachannels.

Coban,using22fake aliases,continuedwithhis “persistentcampaignof onlinesextortion”against Todduntil2012,theCrown Counselsaidduringthe trial,andfollowedherasshe

changedhomes,municipalitiesandschools.

AccordingtoaFacebook securityreportobtainedby the Tri-CityNews,Coban wasknownfor:

•blackmailinggirlsfor childexploitationimages andvideos

•soliciting,creatingand distributingchildexploitationcontent

•blackmailingmeninto sendingmoneytoavoid compromisingsexualimagesandvideosfrombeing distributedtofriendsand family

Atleast20victimswere fromtheU.K.

Inthecaseinvolving AmandaTodd,whowas Coban’sonlyvictimtodie, expertwitnessesforthe Crown,includingpoliceofficersfromtheNetherlands, CanadaandAustralia,testifiedthatCobanusedthe darkweb,virtualprivatenetworksandscrubbingsoftwareonhismultipledevices

tohidehisidentity.

OnTuesday,CarolTodd citedacaseinSt.Paul, Minn.,whereonSept.14,a 31-year-oldmanwassentencedto43yearsbehind barsafterhepleadedguilty to:

•twocountsofproductionofchildpornography

•onecountofpossession ofchildpornography

•onecountofinterstate communicationswithintent toextort

TheAmericancourt heardhowYueVangtargetedmorethan1,100 victimsin42countries,including500girlsacrossthe U.S.inayears-longonline sextortionscheme.

“Whenyoureadthe description,itwasexactly whatAydinCobandid,so thepredatorsareoutthere,” CarolToddsaid.“It’supto usasawhole,asaglobal community,tomakesurewe bringawarenessandbuild educationoutthere.”

Losing trees

publicaccessand morethan$6million incapitalinfrastructurefundingthatwill includesewerupgrades.

Severalresidents turnedouttothepublichearingtosupport theproject,manyof themnotingthatthe projectwillprovide much-neededaffordablerentalhousingin thecity.

Somecouncillors notedthelossoftrees andsaiditwasdisappointingbutsaid it’satrade-offtoget importanthousingto thecity.

Evenwithnew treesplantedforthe development,thecity wouldbeshort60 treesfromtheproject, whichwouldhave tobemadeupelsewhere.

MayorBradWest notedthattheregion willseeanadditional onemillionpeople by2050andPort Coquitlamwilllikely havetoacceptits share.

“PortCoquitlamis notanisland,”West said Healsonotedthe projectwilladdimportantinfrastructure andamenitieswithoutadditionalcostto taxpayers.

Theprojectstill needsfinaladoption andadevelopment permitbeforeitcan goahead.

LaunchedinAprilunder a$250,000packagethat includesaboosttopublic parksthissummer,Tree Spreeaimstodoublethe numberoftreesplanted annually—from5,000to 10,000—onpublicandpri vateland.

AsofSept.13,thecity hadreachedmorethanhalf ofitsgoal,saidKathleen Reinheimer,Coquitlam’s parksmanager,whilewatch inganothertreebeingadded toTownCentrePark:a Chinesefringetree.

PlantedbyJeffCase, Coquitlam’surbanforest servicesupervisor,along anewlycarvedpathway onthenortheasternside ofLafargeLake,thetreeis “nativetoAsia,fragrantand stunning,”hesaid.

Withthecity’sarborist,

Caseisoneofthemanystaff onsitewhencitytoursand giveawayshappenatcommunityeventssuchasfestivalsandblockparties.

Witheachtreehandout, Caseandhisteamwantto discusswithCoquitlamresidentsthespecifics—thatis, wherethetreewillbeplaced andhowit’stobeplanted.

Gonearethedayswhen cedarseedlingsweredistributed,Reinheimersaid;now, dogwoods,Japanesemaples andotherhardyyoungtrees —toleranttoawiderangeof soilandweatherconditions —arepassedalongtoresidentsfortheirproperties.

“Wehaveatreeforevery-

bodyandeverywhere,”Case said.

“It’sallaboutgettingthe righttreeintherightplace.”

Thetreescomefrom severalLowerMainland nurseries,saidErinGorby, Coquitlam’surbanforestry andparkservicesmanager, andarepurchasedatwholesalecost.

Fundingforthetreesis offsetwithgrantsfromTree Canadaandothersources.

Gorbysaidgiventheimpactofclimatechange,the needtoboostthecity’stree canopyisgreaterthanever toprovideshadeandfilter theair,amongotherthings.

Currently,thetreecover

standsatabout40per cent(withintheUrban ContainmentBoundary) —betterthanmostMetro Vancouvermunicipalities, shesaid.

Bycomparison,according toa2019regionalstudy,Port Coquitlam’scoverisat23 percentandPortMoody’sis at53percent.

“Coquitlamhasareally enviabletreecanopycover,” Gorbysaid.“Wewantto makesurethatwemaintain it,improveitanddistribute itequallyacrossourneighbourhoods.”

Reinheimersaid Coquitlamisnotonlyworkingwiththepublicand

developers,butcitystaff arealsoreachingoutto20 schoolstofindnewplaces fortreesonSchoolDistrict 43campuses.

Inturn,thestudentsget alessonabouthowtohelp MotherNature,Reinheimer said.

Asforthecity,it’splanting moretreesinopenspaces andalongboulevardsthis year.

And,thisfall,staffwill alsodiveintoanurbanforest managementplanthatwill measureCoquitlam’stree canopycover.

Casesaidasthenewtrees goin,citystaffsometimes refertotheworld-class arboretumat səmiq̓ʷəʔelə/ RiverviewLands,acentury-oldsiteoffLougheed Highway.

RoyceShook,presidentof theWilsonCentreSeniors' AdvisoryAssociation (WCSAA),saidseniorsin PortCoquitlamhavebeen keptactive,connectedand entertainedsince1992 thankstosocialevents hostedbythegroup.

“Alotofdecentpeople overyearshavehelpedthe seniors,”saidShook.

WhileCOVID-19may havepreventedseniorsfrom participatinginprograms, Shooksaidtheyarestarting tocomeback.

Hehopesafullslateof events—subsidizedbya federalNewHorizonsgrant —willkeepthemcoming outtoenjoythemselves.

He’llbejoinedbyabout 20friendsandacquaintances—andanyoneelse whowantstoparticipate —withguitars,woodwinds, akahon,asetofkeyboards andevenakazoo.

Whathappensfrom thereisanybody’sguess, saidFaber,anaccordionist withanearforcomposing songsthatsatirizecurrent

andlocalaffairslikethe EnglishBaybargeandMetro Vancouver’shousingcrisis. Butifit’sanythinglike suchgatheringsbackhome, itshouldbearousinggood time.

“Itjustbringspeopleout oftheirshells,”Fabersaid. “Everyonehasastoryabout asongandmusic.”

Fabersaidwhenhewas growingupinNovaScotia, itseemedeverygatheringof family,friendsandneighbourseventuallygravitated tothekitchenwheresomeoneultimatelybrokeouta guitar,thenothersjoinedin.

“Thekitcheniswherethe familyhangsout,”hesaid.

Faberdoesn’tknowwhy musicbecamesuchanintegralpartofsuchkitchen parties.Onetheoryisthe seasonalnatureofEast Coastworkinglifeoftenleft peoplewithmonthsofidle timetofill,sothey’dpickup aninstrumentandlearnto play.

Alocalmemberofparliamentclaimsnowisthetime todoso,believingtoday’s youthwillfeeltheimpactof inflation,theriseinliving expensesandmorepossible extremeweatherevents.

BonitaZarrillotoldthe Tri-CityNews thatyoung peopleneedtoknowhow theycanimprovetheirfu turesandknockdownbarriers,anditstartsbyallowing themtogotothepolls.

“Someofthem[are]still decidingwhattheywantto dointhefuture,butallof

hasanevengreaterchance ofbecominglawbasedonits cross-partysupport.

“Therearesomanyyoung peopleouttherewhoare intelligent,informed,compassionateandmotivatedto createchangeintheworld.I thinkitwouldbearealbenefittooursystemtobring themintotheconversation,” Bachrachsaid.

“Thisisaboutspeaking toCanadiansaboutmaking oursystemstronger.”

AvoteonBillC-210is tenativelyscheduledto takeplaceintheHouseof CommonsonSept.26.

Itturnsouttherewere manyreasonsaCoquitlam residentandRBCcommercialaccountmanager wantedtocelebratethe healthcareworkersatEagle RidgeHospital.

“Iwantedtoexpressmy immensegratitudetothe foundationforthepositive workputintoEagleRidge Hospital,”saidMarjan Kazemzadeh,whosestory spurredtheEagleRidge HospitalFoundationtoorganizeastaffappreciation eventonThursday,Sept.15.

AlongwithaheartyItalian mealsuppliedbyPasta Polo,games,an80stheme andmusic,ERHstaffgota well-deservedbreakand heardKazemzadeh’sstory ofherJuly17stayatthehospital.

Kazemzadehhadtakena badfallwhenshelandedat thePortMoodyhospitalfora seven-hourstay.

Duringhertimewaiting forX-raysandtreatment, Kazemzadehsaidshewas treatedkindlybyeverypersonshecameacross.

Andwhilehorrorstories oflonghospitalwaitsamidst staffshortagesabound, Kazemzadehsaidherexperiencewasdrastically different.

“Ilostcountofhowmany timesthestaffcomfortedme oraskedifIneededablanket orpillow,”saidKazemzadeh, whosaiddespitethestaff shortage“almostevery healthcareworkerthatIinteractedwithtookthetime toaskaboutmyday,my healthandmysituation.

“Ifeltverywell-takencare of—fromtheadminthat gavemeamasktothenurse thatpushedmywheelchair tomedicalimagingand thenursewhotaughtme, verypatiently,howtouse crutchesandwalkedmeto mycar.”

Infactattimes,itfeltlikea spa,saidKazemzadeh.

“That’showcalmand caringeveryonewas.Iknew Iwasingoodhandsandthe levelofrespectandadmirationIhaveforourhealthcare workershasgrowntenfold.”

Kazemzadehsaidher “heartbroke”watching “howhardeveryonewas workingandwerebeing accommodatingunderso muchstresswithpatients beingunkindorunreasonableattimes.”

Inadditionto Kazemzadeh,whoworksat theCoquitlambranchon BarnetHighway,15RBC employeescameouttovolunteerfortheevent.

DJArashJ,whoalso worksinfinance,insisted onspinningsomediscsfor theeventeventhoughhe’s undergoingdifficultcancer treatments.

Arashwasdiagnosedwith acombinationofstage3Non HodgkinLymphomaand GreyZoonLymphomasix monthsagoandisundergoingchemotherapyafter emergencysurgery.

SincehismovetoCanada 10yearsago,Arashhasbeen ahugecontributortohealth carebyvolunteeringand donatinghistimeandraising awareness.

Meanwhile,ERHstaff appreciatedthethoughtfulnessofthespecialappreciationevent,stated MeganTait,managerof ClinicalOperationsforBC EmergencyHealthServices.

Thecity’sauditwasa meanstoeducateresidents ontheimportanceofreduc ingexposureofunnatural foodsourcestobearsand otherwildlife,which,in turn,wouldleadtofewer conflicts.

Coquitlamwasrecognizedforitseffortsonsolid wastebylawswithacom munityexcellenceaward, whichwaspresentedlast weekatthe2022Unionof BCMunicipalities(UBCM) conventioninWhistler.

Inanewsrelease,thecity saidthehonourwasinthe servicedeliverycategory, whichrecognizesproactive programsthatdemonstrate

benefittothecommunity, anduseperformance measuresandstandardsto ensuresustainableservice delivery.

“From2017to2021,the Cityconductedannualcurbsideauditseachspringto encourageresidentstoabide bycartsetouttimesrequired throughtheCity’sSolid WasteManagementBylaw,” addedCoquitlamenvironmentmanagerCaresseSelk.

“Additionally,theCityestablishedmorningandeveningcollectionzonesin2018 tofurtherlimitthetimesolid wastewasatthecurb—and accessibletowildlife.”

SelksaidCoquitlamis theonlyMetroVancouver municipality—andoneof 10intheprovince—thathas achievedBearSmartstatus resultinglargelyfromthe soldwastecomplianceand managementsystem.

“Byimplementing theauditsystem,collection-zoneamendments, andthroughthecreation

ofplanningdocuments, suchastheEnvironmental SustainabilityPlan,theCity hasminimizedhuman–wildlifeconflictandisable toidentifyneighbourhoods thatrequirefurthereducationandoutreach.”

In2021,Coquitlamissued 105ticketstolocalproperty ownersthatleftfoodscraps outforwildlifeworthupto $500each.

Thenumberisa44per centdecreasefrom2020, and77percentfromfive yearsago—450ticketswere issued2017.

Therewerealso923 warningsgiventolocal homeownersin2021for improperlysecuringgarbage cartsand/orlooseunnatural attractants.

AsofSept.15, WildSafeBC’sWildlifeAlert ReportingProgramsaid Coquitlamhasrecorded 46knownwildlifeencountersinvolvinggarbageand unnaturalfoodattractants sincethestartof2022.

Reachingasolution requiredseveralyearsof negotiationinvolvingthe provincialministry,Metro Vancouver,theCityof PortMoodyandVillageof Anmore,aswellasSchool District43.Residentsofthe strataagreedtocoverthe estimated$800,000costfor engineeringandconstructingthesewerhookuptoa

ularpumpingoftheseptic field.

MacSporran,whosetwo childrenattendedEagle Mountainduringthetimeits groundswerecontaminated, buthavenowmovedonto secondaryschool,saidthe bureaucraticwranglingthat stanchedaspeedyresolutionwasunacceptable.

Shesaidbettersystems needtobeputinplaceto allowformoredirectcommunicationwiththeGreater VancouverSewerageand DischargeDistrict,which administerstheregion’s sewersystemandbetween neighbouringmunicipalities thatmighthavecommoninterestsinregionalaffairs.

“Ittookunwavering, persistentadvocacyand dedicationofmanyvoices fromparentsandcommunitymemberstocommunicatethatthoseparties

togetheruntilasolutionwas reached,”saidMacSporran. Infact,atonepoint,parents gatheredmorethan3,500 signaturesonapetitionurgingaresolution.

MichaelThomas,chair oftheSD43board,saidthe complexlegalandregulatoryprocess,aswellasthe necessityforAnmoreGreen tosecurefundingforconstructionoftheconnection, requiredpatience.

“Weknowthatstudents, parents,schoolstaffand familieshavebeenwaiting forthiswelcomenewsfor sometime,”hesaidina statement.

Boiessaidwhilesome legalandzoningissues remaintoberesolved,the oldsepticfieldisbeing decommissionedandwhateverlingeringsewageisleft willbecleansedbyMother Natureinabout30–60days.

Overaspanofthreedays, localvolunteerswerecalled tofindabiker,hikerand kayakerinthreedifferent

locationsandhadtodeploy bikes,helicopterandboatto rescuethem.

OnSept.10,crewswere activatedafterreceivinga reportofamanthatsuffered aseriousinjurytohisneck whilemountainbikingnear EagleMountain’s“Couples Therapy”trail.

WithhelpfromPort Moodyfirefighters,thebiker waspackagedandhoisted upviaalonglinerescueby TalonHelicopters.SAR’s E-biketeamalsoresponded astheyhadbeentrainingin theareawhenthereportwas made.

HewasbroughttoEagle MountainParkwherehe wastransferredintothecare ofBCEmergencyHealth Services(BCEHS)andtaken tohospital.

It’sbuyerbewarewhen itcomestopurchasingpresalecondos,especiallyina softeningmarket.

That’swhatonePort Coquitlamcouplefound whentheyfinallygottosee theirbrandnewcondoafter afour-yearwait.

Butinsteadofthehome oftheirdreams,thecouple foundthestreet-facingunit onthe14thfloorwastoo

noisyfortheirliking.

Evenmoresurprising, however,wasthesizeof theparkingstalltheywere assigned—anditwasminuscule.

Enclosedbytwoconcrete wallsandwithametalcage protrudingfromthewall,the parkingstallwasmoreofa storageareathanarealparkingspace.

Timewasalsorunning outonthecouplewhodecidedtosellthecondobecauseofthenoise.

Withpricesdroppingand interestratesrising,they wereworriedtheywould sufferahugelossontheir biggestlifetimeinvestment.

“Wearenotflippers,”said Fialkow.“Wewereplanning tolivethere.”

Theyneededaregu-

lar-sizedparkingspaceto enticeabuyersotheycould sellquickly.

Thesetypesofissuesused tobehandledbyadiscount offeredtobuyersofpre-sale unitsbecauseoftheriskthey weretakingbypurchasing theunitbeforetakingpossessionandseeingwhatit lookedlike.

Martinuiksaidthose discountswereeliminated whenthemarketwasstrong inthebeliefthatappreciatingvaluewouldcompensate forproblemslater.

“Butthiscasehastodo withparkingspotsandhow littlecontrolbuyershave overwhichstalltheywill haveassignedtothem,”he said.

WhatOnnieventually offered—andthecouple accepted—wasanelectric-vehiclestall(EV),which isregularsizedandalso haspowertochargeanEV battery.

However,theyhadtopay $7,500,togetit,eventhough

theydon’townanelectric vehiclenordoestheirprospectivebuyerwhowouldn’t purchasetheunitwithout aregular-sizedstallandinsisteditbeasubjectclause.

Fialkowsaidithurttopay thousandsextraforastall thatshouldhavecomewith theunit.
