OnTuesday(Sept.27), thoseattendingtheFederal ElectoralBoundaries Commissionconsultation attheCoquitlamPublic Librarywereunitedintheir stancethattheTri-Cities shouldnotbedividedfederally.

TheB.C.commission, madeupofJusticeMary Saunders,KennethCarty andStewartLadyman,isattemptingtoredrawthelines toaccommodategrowthin theLowerMainland/Fraser Valley,whichhas26electoraldistricts.

Thethree-timemayoralty candidateforCoquitlam, whoisrarelyseenpublicly campaigning,stoodbefore about100peopleatlast Thursday’sall-candidates’ meetingtosayhe’srunning becausehe’supsetwith MayorRichardStewart.

Thetwohave“someissuesfromthepast,”hesaid, withoutexplanation,while pointingtothemayorsitting nexttohim.

ButMahovlichwascut shortinhisopeningcommentsbyLeslieCourchesne, CEOoftheTri-Cities ChamberofCommerce, thebusinessorganization that’shostingall-candidates’ eventsinCoquitlam,Port CoquitlamandPortMoody beforetheOct.15vote.

Mahovlich,56,aself-describedcarpenter,elite hockeycoachandcon spiracybookauthorwho hascriminalconvictions datingbackto1999,isoneof threeresidentsseekingthe Coquitlammayor’schair.

Stewart,whoisrunning forre-electiontoimprove mentalhealthservicesinthe cityandregion,isalsoup againstacompetitorfrom theirlastcampaign:Adel Gamar.

Thetrio,alongwith20of the22councilcandidates, pledgedtothein-person andonlineaudiencehow

theywouldtacklegrowth,affordablehousingandrising taxes,amongotherthings.

HeldattheEvergreen CulturalCentreandattendedbyB.C.’sfinance ministerSelinaRobinson (MLAforCoquitlam–Maillardville);formermayor MaxineWilson;andCoun. ChrisWilson,whoisnotreturningforanotherterm,the meetingwasthefirstinthe Coquitlamrace.

Andmanycandidates didn’tholdbacktheirfrustrationwiththecurrent council.

Gamarsaidhe’shearing onthedoorstepthat“it’s timeforachange”with councilwhileBenCraigsaid

incumbents“disconnected” withvoters.

Candidatesalsofielded questionsaboutthecostof living,theneedformore WestCoastExpressservices, LNGandbiofuels,green technology,anti-Asiansentimentsandgenderequality.

StewartandGamar,who ispresidentoftheDouglas Collegeboard,alsosparred aboutstudenthousing. Gamarcalledforaction fromthemunicipalitywhile Stewartsaidcityrepresentativeshavemetwiththe collegeboardseventimes topushthematterwiththe provincialgovernment.

“Weareurgingthemto buildhousing,”Stewartsaid.

Candidatesalsovowedto increasethetreecanopyin Coquitlambyplantingmore trees.

BenjaminPerry,the leaderoftheForceofNature Tri-CitiesCommunity ActionTeam,saidthecity hastofindabalancebetweengrowthandenvironmentalmeasures.“Youcan havebuildingsandtreesside byside.It’spossible,”hesaid.

Onthehousingmarket andtheneedformoreaffordablehomes,Coun.Steve Kimsaidhe’dlikeCoquitlam tobuildmulticulturallivingcomplexesforseniors. Manyofthecity’sseniors “arebeinghounded”outof theirneighbourhoodsbyre-

ArzanBalsara,Port Moody’ssustainabilityand energycoordinator,told counciltheplan’sprimary goalsaretoensurethecityis readytorespondtoextreme weatherevents.

It’salsodesignedto provideequalaccessto information,resourcesand supportforallitsresidents, especiallythosewhomaybe marginalized,likeseniors,

renters,peoplewithchronic medialconditions,visible

minoritiesorthoselivingin inappropriatehousing.

“Actionshavetoreachall membersofthepopulation,” hesaid.

Coun.HunterMadsen saidtheinformationissobering,andthecityneedsto startlookingatallitsdevelopmentthroughthelensof climatechange.

Totraversethemuddy farmers’fields,theyput wider,treadedtireson theirdropbarracingbikes andbecameadeptasskills likepoweringthroughwa-

ter-filledditchesandover obstacleslikefencesor downedtrees.

It’snowafullydeveloped nicheofcycling,withits ownprofessionalWorldCup circuitatthetopofthecompetitiverungandscoresof localracestoscratchtheitch ofclubracersandafficitionadoslookingtotestthemselvesagainstothersandthe elements.

Butmostlyit’saparty, Nelsonsaid.

Cyclocrossmayprovide someseriousracing,butthe racersdon’ttakethemselves tooseriously.

Heck,theDonkeyCross gotitsnamefromthelive donkeyinacorralthatwasa featuredguestattheevent.

Someracersshowup atthestartinggateincostume,andlibationsbeing enjoyedinthecompulsory beergardenoftenendupin thehandsofriders—while they’restillracing.

“Cyclocrossisjustsuch afuneventforthecyclists andthespectators,”said Nelson,anavidroadcyclist whowasintroducedto‘cross fiveyearsago.“It’sdirty.It’s muddy.There’swackytechnicalfeaturesandthecrowd willheckleyou.”

He’salsoaimingtomake hiseventsmoreinclusive andinvitingtonewcomers tothesport.

ThecourseatUpper CoquitlamRiverParkwill bemostlyflatandwide open,withasectiontorun onpavementandanother throughtheforest.

Thatmeansnobigclimbs toburstthelungsofriders whohaven’tbeenpilingup thekilometresthroughthe summerwhilestillproviding plentyofchallengeforexperiencedracerstoreallypush

theirspeed.

“It’sintense.It’sshort.It’s greathead-to-headracing,” Nelsonsaid.“You’remixing itupwiththecompetition.”

Eachofthefirsttworaces willfeatureafullmenuof men’sandwomen’sevents fornoviceridersuptoElite andMasters.Therearealso opportunitiesforkidstoget onthecourse,andevena funfamilyevent.

Mountainbikesarewelcome,evenaunicycle,but notelectric-assistbikes; they’renotpartofthecompetitivecyclocrossmilieu —yet.

OnSept.9,atPort CoquitlamProvincial Court,WilliamArthurJones receivedaconditionaldis chargeandwasplacedon probationforayearafterhe pleadedguiltytouttering threats.

Thejudgealsoordered Jones,66,tostayawayfrom whereWestlives,works, playsandworships;notpos sessfirearms;andpaya$100 victimfinesurcharge.

Joneswaschargedon Dec.31,2021,afteraconfrontationthedaybefore withtwoindividualsinPort Coquitlam,whenhewasar restedwithareplicagun.

CoquitlamRCMP Cpl.AlexaHodginssaid CoquitlamRCMPbeganits investigationandreferred themattertoCrownprose cutorsforpossiblecriminal charges.

WestsaidJonesalso threatenedstaffinthecity halllobby.

Themayorhassinceinstalledsecuritycamerasoutsideofhishomeforadded protection.

“I’mgratefultothepolice andCrownfortakingthis seriouslyasthesethingsare alltoooftenbrushedoff,”he said.

“I’madadandahusbandbeforeanythingelse,” headded.“Anythreatsto themareserious.Iunderstandasamayoryou’rein thepubliceye,butthat’snot whatthiswas.Thiswasnot someonebeingupsetatthe city.Thiswasathreattomy lifeandthelivesofmywife

andchildren.”

Despitethedisturbingincident,whichhasprompted DominicLong,PoCo’s communitysafetyandcorporateservicesdirector,to reviewofthesafetyofcity hallemployeesandelected officials,Westsaidnearlyall communicationwithPoCo residentshasbeenrespectful andpositive,andhetakes

prideinbeingaresponsive civicleader.

“Sometimes,thereare issuesthatcan’tberesolved tothesatisfactionofourresidents,”hesaid,“butit’sstilla reallyenjoyableinteraction. Itrytogotheextramile.”

Dumpingpaintdowna citystormdrainisano-no andcancostyoubigtime. Atleastthat’swhata Coquitlamresidentlearned aftertheywerefined$500 andmadetopayfeesfor avacuumtruckthatwas calledtocleanoutamunic

ipalcatchbasinneartheir house.

Concernsarosewhena milkywhitesubstancewas foundinHoyCreeknear WaltonAvenueonSept.8.

Officialswerecalledand thesourceofthepaintwas tracedtoahomewhere someonewaspaintingthe exterioroftheirhouse,accordingtoCoquitlam’senvironmentmanager CaresseSelk.
