OnTuesday(Sept.27), thoseattendingtheFederal ElectoralBoundaries Commissionconsultation attheCoquitlamPublic Librarywereunitedintheir stancethattheTri-Cities shouldnotbedividedfederally.
TheB.C.commission, madeupofJusticeMary Saunders,KennethCarty andStewartLadyman,isattemptingtoredrawthelines toaccommodategrowthin theLowerMainland/Fraser Valley,whichhas26electoraldistricts.

Mahovlich,56,aself-describedcarpenter,elite hockeycoachandcon spiracybookauthorwho hascriminalconvictions datingbackto1999,isoneof threeresidentsseekingthe Coquitlammayor’schair.
Stewart,whoisrunning forre-electiontoimprove mentalhealthservicesinthe cityandregion,isalsoup againstacompetitorfrom theirlastcampaign:Adel Gamar.
Thetrio,alongwith20of the22councilcandidates, pledgedtothein-person andonlineaudiencehow

HeldattheEvergreen CulturalCentreandattendedbyB.C.’sfinance ministerSelinaRobinson (MLAforCoquitlam–Maillardville);formermayor MaxineWilson;andCoun. ChrisWilson,whoisnotreturningforanotherterm,the meetingwasthefirstinthe Coquitlamrace.
Andmanycandidates didn’tholdbacktheirfrustrationwiththecurrent council.
Gamarsaidhe’shearing onthedoorstepthat“it’s timeforachange”with councilwhileBenCraigsaid
incumbents“disconnected” withvoters.
Candidatesalsofielded questionsaboutthecostof living,theneedformore WestCoastExpressservices, LNGandbiofuels,green technology,anti-Asiansentimentsandgenderequality.
StewartandGamar,who ispresidentoftheDouglas Collegeboard,alsosparred aboutstudenthousing. Gamarcalledforaction fromthemunicipalitywhile Stewartsaidcityrepresentativeshavemetwiththe collegeboardseventimes topushthematterwiththe provincialgovernment.

ArzanBalsara,Port Moody’ssustainabilityand energycoordinator,told counciltheplan’sprimary goalsaretoensurethecityis readytorespondtoextreme weatherevents.
It’salsodesignedto provideequalaccessto information,resourcesand supportforallitsresidents, especiallythosewhomaybe marginalized,likeseniors,
renters,peoplewithchronic medialconditions,visible
minoritiesorthoselivingin inappropriatehousing.
“Actionshavetoreachall membersofthepopulation,” hesaid.
Throughaseriesofthree workshopsinvolvingmore than25provincialandcommunityorganizations,the planalsoidentifiescritical facilitiesandinfrastructure thatcouldbecommunity lifelinesduringanextreme weatherevent.

But,addedBalsara,some ofthosecouldbevulnerable toextremeweatherevents themselvesbecauseoftheir location.
Forinstance,EagleRidge Hospitalcouldbeimpacted byawildfirebroughtonby extremeheatorlongdry spellswhilethereccomplex couldalsofeeltheeffectsof extremeheat,dryspellsor increasedprecipitation.
Coun.HunterMadsen saidtheinformationissobering,andthecityneedsto startlookingatallitsdevelopmentthroughthelensof climatechange.
“Theseareallissuesthat
dovetailwithwhatwe’re doing,”hesaid,addingdesignelementslikeawnings oversidewalksbecome morethanjustadecorative enhancementwhenthey providevaluableshadeina heatwave.
Amongthe27actions recommendedbytheauthor tohelpthecityadapttothe likelihoodofmoreextreme weathereventsare:
•connectwithneighbourhoodgroupstoestablish“extremeweatherambassadors”
•developaregistryofvulnerablepopulations
•increasecollaboration andcoordinationwith neighbouringcommunities intheTri-Cities
•enhanceextreme weathereventawareness andpreparednessthrough educationofresidents
•establishatreecanopy enhancementprogramwith afocusonareawithadiminishednumberoftrees
Balsarasaidtheplan’s goalsandactionswillbereviewedandrevisedaspartof thecity’sclimateactionplan tobeupdatedin2025.
“Thereisalotofworkto doinupcomingyears,”he said.“Boldeffortswillbe necessarytoincreasecommunityclimateresilience.”

Thejudgealsoordered Jones,66,tostayawayfrom whereWestlives,works, playsandworships;notpos sessfirearms;andpaya$100 victimfinesurcharge.
Joneswaschargedon Dec.31,2021,afteraconfrontationthedaybefore withtwoindividualsinPort Coquitlam,whenhewasar restedwithareplicagun.

Thecentre,Worthington said,isdesignedfor“healthy livingandcreatingthatfeel ingofbelonging”;itwillbe accessibleandwon’tturn customersawaywhocan’t affordtopay.
Andpartofthedealwith thecityisthatCoquitlam residentswillhaveaccess to30hoursperweekof pooluseplus13hoursper weekinthefitnesscentre,at equivalentcityrates.
Onceopen,itwillbethe charity’sfifthYMCAreccentreintheLowerMainland, shesaid.

Officialswerecalledand thesourceofthepaintwas tracedtoahomewhere someonewaspaintingthe exterioroftheirhouse,accordingtoCoquitlam’senvironmentmanager CaresseSelk.
Itwasthesecondoftwo dumpsintoacatchbasinin thearea.
OnAug.16,areportwas
madethatthecreeknear WaltonAvewasrunning “whiteandcloudy”;however,thesourceofthespill wasneverfoundalthoughit wasbelievedtobepaint.
Crewsinstalledbooms tocatchthesubstance,but someofitsunktothebottomofthecreek,according totheHoy/ScottWatershed Society(HWSS).
Fortunately,therewere nofishdeathsreportedby thesociety.

Policesaidthedriver didn’thavetheir“L”properlyandvisiblydisplayedon theirgreyHondaAccord.
Also,theydidn’thavea qualifiedsupervisorinside.
Alloftheaboveculminatedintothefourmonthprohibition,aswell astheimpoundmentofthe driver’svehicleandaticket forexcessivespeeding.

KjeldemigratedtoCanadafromAabenraa,Denmark withhisparentsErnaandJuliusNicolaisenand sisterKrisin1951.TheylivedforawhileinCamrose, Alberta,andthenmovedwesttoTwiggIslandin VancouverandlatertoPortMoody.
Kjeldhadaloveofthewaterwhichledhimtodiving andboating.Heusedhisclevermindtodesignand makehisowncamerahousings,manyofwhich arestillinusetodaybythedivingcommunity,and oneisondisplayintheBarcelonaMusuem.
Kjeld’slifecametoanendinarapidlylosing fight withpancreaticcancer,discoveredjust3weeks earlier.Heremarkedtothedoctor“I’mgettingmy walkingpapersnow”.Thensangtothemusicfrom Queen’sBohemianRhapsodyandclosedhiseyes forthelasttime.Kjeldsasheswillcometorestin oneofhiscamerahousingsinthedeep.
