Adarkchapterof Canada’spastisnowbeing memorializedinPortMoody withtheunveilinglast Wednesday(Nov.9)ofanew interpretivesignatRocky PointPark.
Thesigntellsthestory oftheKomagataMaru,a Japaneseshipthatsailed intoVancouverharbouron May23,1914,with376Sikh, MuslimandHindupassen gersfromIndiaseekinga betterlifeinanewcountry.
Buttheshipwasn’tallowedtodock.
Fortwomonthsitspassengerswereforbiddento disembarkevenastheirfood andwatersuppliesdimin ished.
For16years,RajSingh Toor,whosegrandfatherwas aboardtheKomagataMaru, hasbeenworkingtobring thestoryoftheshipandits passengerstolightinhopes ofhealingwoundsstillfelt deeplyintheIndiancom munityandfosteringgreater
toleranceintheiradopted country.
ThesigninPortMoody isToor’slatestaccomplishmentinhisjourneythat includesapologiesfrom theCanadianandBritish Columbiagovernments, aswellasfromthecities ofVancouverandNew Westminster.
Toorhasalsosoughtinterpretivesignsandplaques inpublicspacesinthosecit-

Toorsaidthefar-flung recognitionoftheKomagata Maruistestimonytothe reachandcontribution ofIndianimmigrantsto Canada’sculturalandeconomicfabricsincetheyfirst
beganarrivinginthecountryintheearly1900s.Many wenttoworkinthelumber millsandfarmfields,gaining theirfootholdwithtough, manuallabourthatothers shunned.
“They’rehardworking andhonest,”Toorsaid. “Theyhelpedtobuild Canada.”
Buttheirjourneyhas oftenbeenfraughtwithdiscrimination.
WhentheKomagata Maruwasorderedby authoritiestoreturnto Indiaundertheescortofa Canadiannavalvessel,many ofitspassengersweresick andstarving.
Upontheirreturnto India,20werekilledby Britishtroopswhoregarded themasinsurrectionists. Others,likeToor’sgrandfather,weresenttojailwhere somebecameradicalized andeventuallygotinvolved inIndia’sfightforindependencefromBritain’scolonial rulethatultimatelyproved successfulin1947.
Toorsaidhehopesthe newsignatRockyPoint Park,astone’sthrowfrom thesiteoftheoldFlavelle Cedarmillwhereancestorsanddescendantsfrom someofthoseaboardthe KomagataMarufoundwork, willhelpeducatethecommunityabouttheheavytoll thatcanbeexactedbyintoleranceandthebenefitsthat cancomefromacceptance.

Itallowsclientstodoeverythingfromparticipating inoutdoorrecreation,to takingupactivitiesofdaily lifesuchassettingupbank accountsorseekinglong-

Thevastmajorityreturn safelyandontime,butsome donot.
Weworkhardtoretain clientsandwelcomethem backafteranAWOL,evenif theyhavetakensubstances whileonapass,orifthey strugglewithmotivation.
Onaverage,wehaveone certifiedclientgoAWOL everyonetotwodays.The majorityoccurwhenaclient hasaphysician-ordered passbutdoesnotreturnon time.
Typically,clientswhogo AWOLreturntotreatment withinthreedays,oftenon
theirown.Othertimesthey arelocatedbyVPD,RCMP orotherpoliceagenciesand returned,fortheirown safety,backtoourcare.

Clarkesaidacademics havealwaysbeenapriority attheschool,andmanystudentsdidwellinmathcompetitions;Pinetreealsooffers AdvancePlacementcourses thatenablestudentstodo theirfirstyearofuniversity.
However,theschoolhas alsoproducedsometop volleyballandbasketball teams,aswellastennisand badmintonplayers.
Forthosewhowentto Pinetree,meetingandminglinginthelargefoyerwas, andstillispopular,aswell aschattingwithoneanother outside,orstayingwarmin themulti-purposeroom/ cafeteriaorplayingvideo gamesintheMaclab.

“Iftheownersfailintheir actionagainstAnthem,their eventualrecoveryisentirely uncertain,butitissignificantthattheyviewthisas theinferioroutcome,”said Gomery.
