AtlastTuesday’s(Nov.29) boardmeeeting,trustees supportedtheexpenditure, tobefinalizedinFebruary, butcomplainedtheschools shouldhavebeenbuiltbiggerinthefirstplace.

ThreerecentlyrebuiltschoolsinCoquitlam andPortCoquitlamare allfacingaspacecrunch —CentennialSecondary, ÉcoleBantingMiddleand MinnekhadaMiddle.

Newclassroomsare neededforCentennial,ata

costof$1.05million.

Twoportablesareneeded forBantingandanother foreitherMinnekhadaor Kwayhquitlam,depending onfeasibility,at$350,000 each.

BoardchairMichael Thomassuggestedthe shortageofclassroomspace isduetoalackofforesight,anddistrictsshouldn’t berequiredtopayforadditionsandportables.

Coquitlam’sschool district(SD43)isbecomingarefugeforstudents fleeingUkraineandhostto immigrantfamiliesseekinga betterlifeforthemselvesand theirchildren.

“Unprecedentedgrowth” inthenumberofprovinciallyfundedinternational studentswhoseparents areinCanadaonworkor studypermitshasboosted enrolmentinschoolsin Coquitlam,PortCoquitlam andPortMoody.

Meanwhile,theneedfor supportforEnglish LanguageLearners(ELL)is growing.

SD43trusteesweretold atlastTuesday’s(Nov.29) boardmeetingthatthefed eralgovernment’simmigrationplanisbehindthe growthinnewcomers.

“Thefederalgovernment hasincreasedstudyand workpermitsandthathada hugeincreaseonournum bers,”saidassistantsuperintendentGeraldShong.

Approximately700newcomerstudents—whoare eligibleforprovincialfund ingbecausetheirparents workorstudy—registered forclassesthisfall.

Thesharpincreasein studentnumberscomesas thefederalgovernmentannouncedthatitispursuing anambitiousplantoaddress thetightlaboursupplyby increasingthenumberof workersforthenextfew years.

InSD43,thereare1,635 InternationalEducation FundingEligiblestudents attendingclassesinlocal schools.Bycomparison,the 2021–22and2020–21school yearshad933and977studentsrespectively.

Amongthenewarrivals are150studentsfleeingwartornUkraine,withmoreon theway.

Ukraineareprovidedwith workpermitsforuptothree years.

STRUGGLES

Manyofthenewcomer studentsarestrugglingwith anxietyfromrelocation—or evenwartrauma—asthey maketheirwaythrough localschoolswithlanguage challengesandotherissues, schooltrusteesweretold.

However,afederally fundedprogramcalledSWIS (SettlementWorkersin Schools)provideseightcase workersandoneprogram assistanttosupportnewcomerfamilies.

Theircaseloadsvary from100to500families

perSWISworkerandlanguagesspoken,including Korean,Russian,Farsi, Dari,Mandarin,Cantonese, Spanish,Portugueseand Arabic,accordingtoSD43.

TwoSWISworkerswho talkedabouttheirjobsat theboardmeetingsaidthat newcomerfamiliescan facemultiplechallenges whenresettlinginCanada.

MeehoLee(Korean) andYufenHsiao(Chinese) talkedaboutchildrenstrugglingwithmentalhealth issuesandparentsfacing isolation,withsomeleaving friendsandfamilybehind.

Inarareglimpseintothe difficultiessomeimmigrant studentsface,Hsiaosaid

inChinathereisastigma againstmentalhealthconcernsorotherdisordersand familiesarereluctanttoseek help.

RESOURCESREADY

“Wedon’ttalkaboutit, wedon’tthinkitexists,”said Hsiao,acknowledgingthat shehasto“walkalongside” familiesforalongtimebeforetheysee“thatCanada isdifferent”andwillaccess resourcesfortheirchildren.

LeedescribedcircumstancesofsomeKorean families,wheremothersand childrenarriveinCanada withoutthefatherwhostays inKoreatowork,andhave tolearntonavigateanew

educationsystem.

ShesaidKoreanfamilies cometoCanadafortheir children’seducationbut oftenstrugglewiththediffer encesatthesametimetheir childrenstruggleforacceptanceandunderstanding.

“Newcomersareoften isolated…theytendtoshy awayfromengagingwith localcommunity[and]there areculturalgaps,different socialsituationsandlanguagebarriers,”saidLee.

Atasupportgroup atPinetreeSecondary School,parentscametogethertoorganizeagarage sale,withmoneygoingback toscholarshipsattheschool.

Theeffortprovided“a senseofbelonging”anda feelingof“givingback,”Lee said.

Inanothergroup,parents andstudentstalkedabout theirstruggles,including stressandanxiety.

“Itwasveryempowering —andtouching,”Leesaid.

SchoolDistrict43expects toreceive$8.8millionin additionalgrantstopayfor moreteachersandsupport stafftohandletheincrease instudents,trusteeswere told.

Accordingtothefederalgovernment,asmany as465,000permanentresidentswillbepermittedto arrivein2023toaddresslabourmarketshortagesinkey areas,suchashealthcare, skilledtrades,manufacturingandtechnology.

FacilitiesmanagerIvano Cecchinisaidwhenthe schoolswerebuiltafew yearsago,projectionsindi catedthatmoreclassrooms wereneededbuttheprov incefundsinstitutionsbased oncurrentenrolment.

“Schoolsize,especially fornewschools,whodeterminesthesizeofschool

whenit’sbuilding,it’sthe ministrywhodecides,”said Cecchini,notingofficials weretoldtwicethatBanting neededtobebigger.

PortCoquitlamTrustee ChristinePollocksaidTerry FoxSecondaryalsoneedsan additionbecauseofitsmany portables.

ButshewastoldB.C.is fundingnewandreplacementschoolsduetoenrolmentgrowthandseismic concernsandthehopeis thatspaceatTerryFoxwill freeuponcethenewBurke Mountainjointmiddle/secondaryschoolisbuilt.

Fortunately,oneschool hasbeenbuilttoaccommodategrowthandIrvine Elementaryhasenough capacityforCoastSalish Elementarystudentswho arewaitingfortheirnewfacilitytoopen,amidstdelays duetolabourandsupply chainchallenges.

thatTaylightBreweryinPort Coquitlamshutitsdoors devastatedtheTri-Cities' growingcommunityofcraft beerenthusiasts.

Alloversocialmedia,fans ofthePoCobusinessexpressedtheirsadnessofthe closure,whichwasblamed ontheimpactofCOVID-19 onthehospitalityindustry.

Now,oneyearlater,the brewery,locatedat4021485CoastMeridianRd., hasfiredupthetanksand re-openedthetastingroom, accordingtoheadbrewer GoldwinChan.

Chan,whohasbeenwith Taylightsince2018,and stayedtooverseethetransitiontothenewowners,said customerswerepiqued bya"crypticmessage"on Taylight'sFacebookpage.

Theyheadedovertothe breweryforitsre-opening dateonNov.26.

"Webroughtmostofthe teamback.Iwasveryhappy

withthemcomingbackand theyexpressedgraciousness forbeingabletobeback, andwehadalotofourlocals visitus,"saidChan.

ABurnabyresident,Chan saidhisfamilyhasahistory inPortCoquitlam,running Salty'sFishandChipsat CoastMeridianRoadand PrairieAvenuefrom1998to

2007.

Chanspenthishigh schoolandearlyuniversity yearsattheshop;now,he's backrunningTaylight.

Chanadmittedthelast12 monthshavebeendifficult, describingitasaseriesof challenges,beginningwith layingeveryoneoffand informingcustomersabout

theclosure.

Forseveralmonths,aprospectiveowners'teamthat seemed"legit"offeredto purchasethebusinessfrom theoriginalowners,butthen backedoutafterstringing themalong.

Finally,thebusinesswas soldtoagroupofLower MainlandownerswhoChan

saidprefertoworkbehind thescenesbutarepleased tobeabletobreathnewlife intothePoCobrewery.

"Ifeelverygratefulwegot throughthisandnowwe're openingbackupandseeing thefamiliarfaces.That’s kindoftherealbeautyofit andI'mhappytohavemy teamback.

"Lastyearwasablur.Iliterallyrememberusclosing. Itwasablurandnowwe’re openingagain."

Chansaidtwostaffmemberscamebackafterfinding jobsinotherTri-Citiesbreweries,andthoughhefeelsa bitguiltyabout"poaching" them,hesaidhe's"gladto havehisboysback."

Chanwenttoworkat theStanleyParkBrewery, honinghisskills,eventuallyjoiningTaylight,when hismentoratStanleyPark Brewingtookajobatanotherbrewery.

Despitethedifficultpast year,Chanispleasedwith hisdecisionandlovesthe senseofcommunityhegets atthePoCobrewery.

Thereviewconcluded thegovernment’sperformancewas,overall,a goodone(withsomenotableexceptionsincertain areas).

TheauthorsnotedB.C. didwellonmanylevels.

Thevaccinerolloutand take-upwerestellarand likelyamongthebestin thecountry,wehadfewer restrictionsandclosures thanotherjurisdictions, schoolsremainedopen forthemostpartand in-persondiningwasrestoredmorequicklythan otherprovinces.

Aswell,ourCOVID-19 outcomesweregenerally betterthanmostotherjurisdictions.

However,thereport concludesthatastime wentonthecommunicationspartofthegovernment’sstrategybeganto falteranderode.

“Thelatercommunicationsbreakdowncontributedtoanerosionof trust,”thereviewstates.

Certainly,fromapersonalpointofview,Ican attesttoseeingsomeof thatfrustrationmountas timepassed.

Iwasbesiegedwith emailsandphonecalls fromhundredsofpeople duringthepandemic, manyexpressingconfusionandbewildermentas COVID-19-relatedrules andprotocolschangedor wereimplemented(many responsesareinthose notebooks).

Nevertheless,public opinionofB.C.’spandemicperformancehas remainedfairlyhigh throughthepandemic, hoveringaround60per centapprovalformonths.

Itiseasyinhindsight topokeholesindecisions madeinunprecedented timesandexperiences, butthereview’smain pointseemsto:B.C.got throughitOK,butwecan alwaysdobetter,especiallyifthereisa“next time.”

AChristmasdisplaythat’s broughttogethertwogenerationsofaPortCoquitlam familyhasbeenrobbedofa belovedinflatablepenguin.

GabrielHyvarinenhas beenhelpinghisgrandfather,DigbyBentzen,assembleanderectthedisplayfor eightyears.

The15-year-oldsaid theannualtaskhashelped themforgea“specialbond” astheydrivearoundtown lookingatotherdisplays forideas,thensetupthe thousandsoflightsandnine inflatablecharactersinfront oftheirtownhouseonPaula Place.

Gabrielsaid,everyyear, heandhisgrandpatryto craftanewelementtoadd

tothedisplay.Twoyears ago,theybuiltagiant“Merry Christmas”signusing chickenwire,LEDlightsand “alot”ofzipties.Lastyear, theydesigned,cutoutand

paintedaSanta’ssleighthat lookslikeit’shoveringin theair.

Otherpartsofthedisplay arethefruitsofGabriel’sindustriousness.

Somemoneyheearned byhelpinghisauntpainta neighbourshousewenttowardtheacquisitionofthree newinflatablecharacters. Otherswerepurchasedwith

Christmasandbirthday money,usuallyatseason-endsales.Andwhena familyfrienddonatedapair ofreindeer,hebroughtthem tolifebyaddingnewlights.

ButonerecentSaturday, Gabrielsaidalittleofhisholidayspiritwasdeflatedwhen hisgrandpaandgrandma returnedhomefroman outingtofindthepenguin, that’sbeenpartofthedisplaysince2016,missing.

Atfirst,hesaid,they thoughttheinflatablecharacterhadbeenunmoored byagustofwind.Butit’sunlikelyMotherNaturewould havethedexteritytounplug

itfromitssocket,norlift awaysocleanly.

Gabrielsaidthefamily walkedaroundtheneighbourhoodhopingtofind thepilferedpenguin,with noluck.

“It’sreallydisappointing thatsomeonewouldstealit,” hesaid.

Gabrielsaidthepenguin isaboutthree-and-a-half feettall.Ithasbluewings, yellowfeetandit’swearinga redscarfandredtouque.He hopesmakinghisfamily’s losspublicmighthelpbring ithome,noquestionsasked.

Bothareaboutforging connectionsandbuilding community,Peacocksaid, elementsofday-to-daylife thatwerechallengedbythe COVID-19pandemicand arenowfightingtocome backbutinnewandinnova tiveways.

OnDec.18,theCanadian Pacific(CP)HolidayTrain isscheduledtorollthrough PortMoodyandPort Coquitlam—thefinaltwo stopsofits24thannualtour acrossthecountry.

Itwillfeatureashowat eachlocationbyJunonominatedCanadianartists MacKenziePorterand

DerikBaker(alsoknownas VirginiatoVegas).

The1,000-foottrainwill breakatitsrespectivestops, openitsstagedoorsandperformasetlistforacrowdof hundredsoflocalresidents lookingtotakeintheholiday spirit.

Whiletheperformances arefreetoenjoy,attendees areencouragedtoconsiderbringingadonation asCP’sgoalfor2022isto feedmorefamiliesthatare strugglingtoputfoodonthe table.

TheCOVID-19pandemic wasinfullswing,andphysicaldistancingmeasures andotherrestrictionswere plentyaroundtheprovince.

ButLerouxknewitwas onlyamatteroftimebefore shecouldreturntoacting,a passionshe’shadsincethe ageofseven.

BySeptember,assoonas thefilmandtelevisionindustrywasOK’dtoproceed cautiously,Lerouxhadher resumereadyforbookings.

Oneoftheassistant coachesfortheRedLeafs women’steamisCarlo Basso,who’snowteachingat CentennialandwillbehelpingCentaurs’headcoach LarryMorowhenthegirls’ seniorseasonstartsinthe spring.

Scottsaidinitiallyshe wasn’tthatkeenoncontinuinghersoccercareer onBurnabyMountain,

lookingintoprogramsat theUniversityofBritish ColumbiaandTrinity WesternUniversityinstead. Butconversationswith Smith’ssister,Emily,asophomoreatSFU,andlearning Bassowascomingtoher

highschoolpiquedher interestforstayingcloseto home.Ultimately,shewas thefirsttosign.

Then,thedominos startedtofall.

Caravattasaidshe thoughtit“wouldbecool”to

gototheuniversitybothher parentsattended.

Smithsaidshelooksforwardtotakingthepitchwith heroldersister.

Allthreesaidthechemistrythatcomesfromhaving playedsoccertogetheron

clubteamssincetheywere sevenoreightyearsold,and thepastcoupleofseasonat highschool,willmakethe steptopost-secondarycompetitioneasiertonavigate.

“We’vegainedaconnection,”Caravattasaid,adding

herpositionasastrikerreliesongoodcommunication withherfellowforwardson theattack.

“Iwouldreallystruggle ifIdidn’tknowthepeople aroundme.”

Scottsaidthebondbetweenthethreeextends beyondthetouchline.They hangouttogetheratschool andsociallyaswell.

“Itfeelslikeapieceof mewouldbemissingifwe weren’ttogether,”shesaid.

Smithsaidhavingfriends athersidewillalsohelp easethedemandsofbeing astudentathlete,likemanagingtheirtimeandgetting throughtheircoursework.

“Theworkloadismore, sogoingthroughitwith peoplewhocanhelpyou willmakeschoolaloteasier,” shesaid.

Alwaysupforanadventure,Joantravelledtheworldwithfamilyandfriendsover theyears.FamilywasherlifeandshetravelledthroughoutCanadatovisither childrenandotherfamily.Wherevershewas,shemadefriendseasily,was alwaysinterestedtolearnfromothersorsharehersenseofhumour.In2013 shebeganactingincommercials,mostnotablyinherhotsaucecommercials. Althoughshedidn’tlike“thatword”,shedidenjoyitonmostthings.
