163rd annual Gibson County Fair opens T he Gibson County Fair board would like to welcome you to the 163rd Gibson County Fair; we believe it’s the best fair in Southern Indiana. As you enter the grounds, this year, you will find out that our fair board, associate fair board members, friends of the fair, and volunteers have been working hard to make improvements to the grounds and scheduling family entertainment for this year’s fair. CHARLIE WOODRUFF The concession stands built in the 1950s are gone and have been replaced with an updated version of the old concession stands. The new stands are covered with open sides, so everyone can still meet with friends and family, and enjoy the fair food and the fair atmosphere. The new stands will seat over 275 people each, they are ADA compliant and will meet current building codes. I would like to give a special thanks to my board of directors and associate board. Without their year-long planning and help we would not have the quality fair we enjoy each year. I would also like to thank ALL of our sponsors that donate, time, money and equipment to the fair. Our sponsors play a key role in our fair and our community. Please support those that support the fair. We hope you enjoy your time at the fair this year. Board President, Charlie Woodruff

renovations wrap up in time For Fair BY QUICHE MATCHEN STAFF WRITER

PRINCETON — Gibson County Fairgrounds renovations are coming to an end. Gibson County Fair Board President Charlie Woodruf f said two new multi-use concession areas are complete, which is the final phase of the multi-million-dollar improvement project. He said vendors Trucks 4 Kids, Oakland City Eagle Riders, Gibson Southern High School Band Boosters and Knights of Columbus are excited about the new facility. “They all agree, it’s better than what they had,” Woodruf f said. He added that the public will be able to stay longer and people will come back to the shaded area, since there’s plenty of room to sit. He said each concession stand will seat more than 280 people with handicap accessibility. The structures meet all the current state safety codes. The old concession stands had a nice atmosphere, but the stands were built in the late 1940s to early 1950s and had run their course, he said. Woodruff said the latest project marks the fifth Quiche Matchen/ Daily Clarion year of construction at the fairgrounds. “We’re Parker Excavating workers tear down old concession stands at the Gibson County Fairgrounds in preparation for ready to wrap it up.” construction of new facilities. Woodr uf f said he’s glad that they did the upgrades, but they’re ready for a fair without construction. He said there will be some infrastructure work to finish, including a new 1,000 feet water line, and replacing old lights with LED lights. “It was a long process, but worth it,” Woodruff said. He said they’ve invested $4.5 million into the fairgrounds. Woodr uf f said the last big constr uction projects prior to the latest round of projects were construction of the livestock pavilion in 1999, and then in 2005, replacing the grandstands. Demo Derby

to Fair lineup BY QUICHE MATCHEN STAFF WRITER

PRINCETON — Ever y year, fair organizers try to find something new to add to the Gibson County Fair, and this year they tied down a “full-blown” rodeo. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, Latting Rodeo Productions will feature bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, tiedown roping, girls breakaway roping and steer wrestling. Charlie Woodr uf f, Gibson County Fair board president, said there has been a lot of buzz around the fair—especially with a rodeo. Woodr uf f said they haven’t had a full-blown rodeo in about 20 years. He said locals can even sign up. “You can join the rodeo for

the night.” Woodruff said they try to find new or different attractions for the fair each year and the rodeo fit into the budget—and Woodruf f hopes it can fit for future fairs. Grandstand seating is free. Admission to the fairgrounds is $7. Children ages 9 and under are admitted free of charge. Other new attractions include Bear Hollow Wood Carvers, who will carve images out of wood. Woodruff said the carving will be available at the silent auction. “You will have the opportunity to bid on these items.” They will also have magic shows three times per day for kids. “Just a little something extra for entertainment,” he said.
