WELCOME TO GIBSON COUNTY

Gibson County Chamber of Commerce office manager Tammy Slinker and Executive Director Karen Thompson

T

he mission of the Gibson County Chamber of Commerce is: “To advance the general welfare and prosperity of Gibson County’s business community.” The Chamber provides a structured organization to assist the business community with economic and community concerns. While the Chamber provides numerous business services only available to its members, the organization also works with the community to enhance the Gibson County experience for present and future visitors, residents and businesses. The Chamber of Commerce is your ultimate business source in Gibson County! The Chamber is the largest, most influential business organization in the county and boasts hundreds of members. Most are small businesses located through southwestern Indiana and neighboring areas with 25 or fewer employees. The Gibson County Chamber of Commerce is a private not-for-profit organization funded primarily by dues paid by member businesses, sponsorships and events throughout the year. It is not a government agency and receives no tax dollars. Founded in Princeton in 1922, it has grown in the past few years to encompass the entire county. The Chamber hosts several annual events including

Golden Heritage Days on the historic Gibson County Courthouse square in mid-September. Food, crafts and entertainment during this three-day event include something for the whole family to enjoy! The Chamber of Commerce is located at 202 E. Broadway St. in Princeton, Ind. Feel free to call with any questions at 812-385-2134 or fax 812-385-2401. ibson County celebrated her bicentennial anniversary in 2013, but her roots go deeper than that. Pioneer surveyor John Severns first lived with his family in caves along the south side of the Patoka River when he became the first white settler in the wilderness that would become known as Gibson County, Indiana. With the good will of the remnants of the Shawnee Indian tribe on the north side of the river, Severns was allowed to build crude huts and eventually operate a ferry from the site of the present-day Severns Bridge north of Princeton. Originally part of Knox County, Gibson County was established in 1813, named in honor of Gen. John Gibson, a veteran of the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars. Gibson served as territorial secretary of Indiana from 1800-1816. He served as acting governor of the territory when Gen. William Henry Harrison was engaged in the War

P

rinceton, the seat of county government, was incorporated in 1814. Long before the town was platted or the county was formed, pioneer James McClure deeded 30 acres of land to men who would eventually donate the 10 acres for the heart of town, which includes the public square. Princeton’s first home was built by Capt. Thomas Chapman in 1814. Chapman built “The Traveler’s Inn” and boarded the hands who built the first courthouse. Today’s courthouse, listed on the National Historic Register, is a successor to the original. The focal point of the county, its clock tower is visible for miles. The county’s treasure features intricate tile floors and walnut woodwork, distinctive masonry and metal artisanry. Fire destroyed the west side of the square in 1893, damaging or destroying the 50 buildings downtown. In 1925, the Tri-State Tornado swept through the south side, damaging or destroying hundreds of homes. The county’s oldest continuously operating business is The Princeton Daily Clarion, established in 1846. Princeton’s square is the heart of the community. A gazebo on the courthouse lawn is home to community concerts, outdoor weddings and other events. The square is the annual home of the Chamber of Commerce Golden Heritage Days Festival in September, seasonal events sponsored by Downtown Princeton Inc., and patriotic commemorations.

Our History

atoka, an Indian name translating to “log on bottom,” is recognized as the oldest town in Gibson County. First named for early settler John Smithfield, and later named Columbia, it gained its distinctive name for the river running along its northern edge. Settled in 1789 and platted in 1813, Patoka once was the home of the largest distillery in the United States. Today, the community churches are the center of activity. Hazleton, on the south bank of the White River in northern Gibson County, is the county’s second-oldest community, settled by Gervas Hazleton, who operated a tavern and ferry in 1813. Hazleton was a flatboat and keelboat port, where corn and wheat were shipped to New Orleans weekly. Today, summer baseball and community dinners draw hundreds to town. Haubstadt’s first settlers arrived in 1804. The German American community’s first postmaster, Henry Haub, built the first house and operated a general store and stagecoach station. Haubstadt celebrates Sommerfest and its German heritage in June each year. Fort Branch takes its name from the series of forts established along the edge of the western frontier in 1811 to protect pioneers against Indian raids. The town hosts its Heritage Festival each fall. Owensville, platted in 1817, is named for Thomas Owen, a famous Kentuckian. The community’s roots in watermelon country are celebrated each summer

during the Watermelon Festival on the town square. Oakland City is named for the beautiful oak groves existing when the town was platted in 1856 by James Cockrum and Warrick Hargrove. The community has rich ties to the Underground Railroad movement. Today, the city is the home of Oakland City University. Residents celebrate the Oakland City Lions Sweet Corn Festival each summer. Francisco is part of the line of the old Wabash and Erie Canal. Platted in 1851, it was once the home of flour mills and packing houses. Today the community churches, elementary school, Lions Club and ball diamond are the hubs of activity.

Our History

S

maller Gibson County communities have big history. Somerville, platted in 1853, was home of Company F, 42nd Indiana Volunteers commanded by Samuel Barrett and William Cockrum. Mackey was founded in 1882, but people lived there in caves in the late 1700s, surviving on wild game, berries and corn. Warrenton was platted in 1840, named for Gen. Joseph Warren of the Revolutionary War. It is the home of The Log Inn, a former stagecoach stop, which features the original log interior. Wheeling was platted July 4, 1856. It’s the home of one of the county’s two historic covered bridges. Formerly called Cabot, Crawleyville was settled in 1811 and named for a local family. Mounts was a village established in 1880 as a flag station. St. James Station was named for the St. James Catholic Church. Kings Station post office was established Nov. 30, 1868. It closed

Oakland City University’s Cochrum Hall has rich ties to the Underground Railroad movement. Nov. 28, 1882. East Mount Carmel village was established in 1885 by Jess Wiseman. Mt. Olympus was originally called Ennes, for pioneer blacksmith William Ennes. Samuel Kelly, a schoolteacher, gave the village its current name because it reminded him of Grecian mountains. Giro was platted in 1848 and the name was changed to Buena Vista

for the Mexican War battle of Feb. 22-23, 1847. Buckskin’s origins come from skins hung on trading post walls, or perhaps for the skins hunters posted on the stagecoach road from Boonville to Princeton for delivery to trading posts. Lyles Station is the only existing community settled by free African Americans. Joshua Lyles owned more than 12,000 acres of land north and west of Lyles Station. Former residents and ancestors commemorate the community’s rich heritage every summer at the New Beginnings Festival at the restored Lyles Consolidated School, which serves as a museum and cultural center. Johnson was settled in 1911 along the Penn Central Railroad and was named for a railroad construction superintendent. Dongola was platted in March 1851 by William Carpenter and Isaac Street. Merchants were able to ship produce by canal or flatboat down the Patoka River.
