2016 County Chamber of Commerce Business Impact of the Year

BIG dreams sprout BIG attraction at Azalea Path BY RACHEL GRABER AKPOTU

Over the years Beverly and Steve Knight have not only grown a widely recognized garden, they have helped grow a community with Azalea Path Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Gibson County Chamber of Commerce 2016 Business Impact of the Year winner Beverly Knight says sometimes big dreams can sprout from everyday occurrences.

“I

was a UPS driver and was inspired by Dr. Henr y Schroeder, who was a hybridizer and owned Holly Hills nurser y in Evansville,” she said. “When he passed away, I stayed friends with his sons and through them I met a lot of other plant

hybridizers.” Azalea Path now features 37 out of 38 hybrids of Schroeder Azaleas, plus the complete collection on Buddy Lee’s Encore Azaleas. “It’s really always been a passion. When I bought the property I started

planting azaleas and they grew up — it really just sort of happened. “People started noticing my azaleas on their way to Smith Greenhouse, which is down the road from me,” she said. “They would pull in my driveway and ask if they could take a look

land into more than 60 acres with a variety of plants and greener y. The Azalea Path also features a variety of unusual plants and native Indiana trees, two spring-fed lakes, a

waterfall, a Koi pond and “chainsaw sculptures which decorate three miles of walking trails. Boasting more than 4,000 azaleas, Knight has one of the largest

A waterfall feature at Azalea Path collections in the Midwest. “Not only do I have azaleas, but I plant unusual trees ever y year,” she said. “You’re going to see trees here that you will not see in ever ybody’s yard. I tr y and plant something unusual ever y year and I have several one-of-a-kind plants.” In addition to the arboretum, the Azalea Path is open to wedding receptions, schools, churches, nursing homes, and private parties. “We host a lot of events, it’s free for the schools and the nursing homes to visit and I also donate my place for politicians and religious events.” Chamber of Commerce Executive

Director Jim Stephens agrees the Azalea Path is a rare treasure for Gibson County. “Azalea Path offers a ver y unique tourism and event planning experience for Gibson County,” he said. “Through the efforts of Steve and Beverly Knight, many weddings, receptions, parties and get togethers give people the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature at its finest.” Knight says having all the family’s hard work recognized by the chamber, as well as the community, is an honor. “The award—that’s a big consideration. Princeton, and Gibson

County as a whole, have been really good to the Azalea Path,” she said. “And we have tried to promote (the county) as well. Even though this property is in both Pike and Gibson Counties, we always send ever yone who comes from out of town to our local restaurants and hotels.” For Knight and her family, this is just the beginning. Expansion of the path is in the works. “We want to finish the inside of the reception building and would also like to build another lake on the property. Our weddings are getting bigger and bigger so we are tr ying to accommodate for those.”

But growing creates its own challenges, and it becomes a whole different ball game.” Since 2010 he says sales volume has increased every year by a large percentage, with 30 people on staff and 150 people on different job sites daily. With the growth, they have also opened Reinbrecht flooring in the same location and are in the process of remodelling a new showroom. “The company will remain located in Gibson County for as long as I’m around, but I definitely see us growing outside the Tri-State area.”

2016 County Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year

Gibson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jim Stephens presents Special Olympics County Coordinator Carol Bock with the Gibson County Community Volunteer of the Year award, while her son Jarrod give her a hug at the Gibson County Chamber of Commerce banquet.

Gibson County Special Olympics has grown from having a few athletes to having several teams for one sport in 10 short years. The local organization was launched by Carol Bock, Gibson County Special Olympics coordinator. 16

Texas, watching 8-year-old son Jarrod at a Special Olympics parade of athletes. “My heart just melted,” she said. At that moment, she realized how important Special Olympics is. Fast forward and Bock and her family move to Gibson County, where her son didn’t qualify for the Gibson County

program like Special Olympics. She took him to Mt. Carmel, Illinois to participate. Bock realized that not all parents could regularly travel with their Special Olympians, so decided to bring Special Olympics to Gibson County. She said she knew the organization would be a good thing for everyone in

Gibson County. After making some phone calls and getting in touch with the state Special Olympics office, Bock was given the green light to start the organization. “They wanted it just as bad,” she said. The program has grown steadily. Just this year, they have six basketball teams and 10 new athletes. Bock said athletes come from all three school corporations in the county. “This gets them out, around people and involved in the community,” she said. Her son, now age 22, is involved in track and field, and basketball. She describes him as bull-headed, funny, smart, hardworking. He aspires to be a movie star and singer. As his mother, Bock notices things about her son that a coach may not notice. “I’ve seen him grow,” she said. Bock said sometimes for special needs parents it’s the little things that count. She said seeing the smile on her son’s face makes it all worth it. “I love that he’s involved,” Bock said. In her decade of working for the organization, she has built friendships and met a lot of different people. One of those friends is with Francie Smith, who has known Bock for 11 years through Special Olympics. Their daughters who were in life skills classes together. Smith said they’re so close people often mistake one for the other — even with their daughters Rachel and Hannah — because they’re always together. “They’ve just become some great friends who I consider part of my family,” Smith said. Smith said Bock’s son Jarrod is her best friend. She calls him “JB” and he calls her “Francie Pants.” “I love that kid like he’s my own,” she said. Smith said he has grown to be a wonderful young man. Smith said it was an honor to speak on Bock’s behalf at the annual Gibson County Chamber of Commerce Banquet for the Volunteer of the Year award. “I was glad to share her accomplishments with the community, and what she does for us is an honor,” Smith said. Smith said Bock is very humble and doesn’t like to toot her own horn, but she will give her all the praise. “She’s so caring and giving of her time,” Smith said. “She’s like the best mom in the world and puts her family first.” Smith said Bock is a great administrator who also brings new ideas to the table to grow the program. “She

has grown this program from humble beginnings to what it is today,” she said. She said it’s also amazing how many athletes are involved with the program growing from one team to numerous teams. “It’s grown so much and it’s still growing, and it takes a lot of volunteers to keep it going,” she said. Bock said the goal for Special Olympics is always changing, but they’re constantly moving forward. “We want to grow our volunteer base,” she said. Bock said they can never have enough volunteers. She admits she has a good group of people behind her and she doesn’t know what she would do without them. Bock said everyone understands what needs to be done and works together.. Smith said if something needs to be done, Bock makes sure it happens. “The Gibson County (Special Olympics) program wouldn’t be what it is without her,” Smith said.
