Weekender/Haley Church

Joseph Wooten takes a “selie” shot with St. Mary’s Catholic School students.

Steve Miller Band keyboardist brings message of equal worth to students BY HALEY CHURCH STAFF WRITER

M O U N T C A R M E L “If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change.”

S

ome of St. Mary’s Catholic School students may not be old enough to remember “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson, but all understood the meaning behind those lyrics after a visit from a musician on Monday. Joseph Allen Wooten, keyboardist for the Steve Miller Band, 3-time Grammynominated artist, creator of the I Matter, You Matter Foundation and friend of St. Mary’s school teacher Johnna Bingham, shared his story with students and how even one person can make the world a better place. After opening with the keyboard rendition of the King of Pop’s song, Wooten said he and his brothers idolized the Jackson 5. “We loved the Jackson 5 because they were like us,” Wooten said. “They did what we did, but they were very popular and we were still striving.” He and his four brothers learned instruments very early in life, and later created The Wooten Brothers. “When we were little, we practiced because we wanted to be good. We practiced all the time — while the other kids were outside playing we were inside practicing,” he said. “We thought that if we were talented enough, the rest would take care of itself.” Wooten said talent did get them a record deal in the mid 1980s, at the same time Whitney Houston signed a deal with the exact same company and producer. “Raise your had if you have me and my brother’s records — right, none of you do — and the reason is because Whitney signed a very good record deal and we signed one that wasn’t very good,” he said. “I tell this story because we made the mistake of thinking talent was enough. Our record deal gave us an opportunity, but because we didn’t spend enough time concentrating and studying about being smart about the music Weekender photo/Haley Church business — our talent wasn’t enough.” Joseph Wooten sings “I Matter” to students at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Mount Carmel. He said he wrote the song because the message means that everybody is just as important as SEE MATTER/PAGE 2 everybody else.

HAUBSTADT — With an eager smile, a bubbly personality and a pink shirt bearing the words “I sur vived sepsis can Drew survive me?,” Newburgh native Erika Breivogel was eager to be featured on “The Price is Right” game show. She appeared in the 45th season of the game show, which aired this week. It’s available to watch online for five days on CBS. Breivogel and her mother, Judy, were so excited to be there, they arrived really early and were numbers nine and 10 out of 300 people. They were called into a room with more than 20 other people, and interviewed. Producer: “How often do you watch the show?” Breivogel: “I’ll be honest, not

she wanted to give a shoutout to anyone before she spun the wheel, she dedicated her spin to her late grandmother. She said when it was her last chance to be called up before the game was up, she had to guess the price of a 55-inch smart TV.

Breivogel spins wheel in honor of her late grandmother of Haubstadt too often — because I’m too busy saving lives.” Once the interviews were complete they got settled and were moved to sit on the left side. A man sitting next to her asked what her number was, and she told him 10. “I just saw a pink shirt with the number 10 on it!” he told Breivogel. “You can’t lie to me,” she said. Breivogel made him pinky promise that he really saw it. The tale he told her turned out to be true, when she was the first contestant to be called to “come on down.” “I went berzerk!” Breivogel said. “I couldn’t believe what was happening.” Her love for the game show started when she would watch it with her grandmother all the time. MT. CARMEL, Ill. —You can drive from Chicago to Los Angeles in about 31 hours — if you stick to the Interstates. However, for the road warrior who isn’t in a hurry, a cruise along old Route 66 can be an unforgettable journey — one with surprises beyond every curve. Now, a musical comedy comes to town — “Route 66,” by Roger Bean — that celebrates the golden era of the quirky old highway. The show arrives at Wabash Valley College at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Brubeck Theatre. Often called “America’s Main Street,” U.S. Route 66 is a retro-fantasyland of art deco motels, roadside attractions, Indian trading posts, novelty drive-ins, and old-fashioned spit-and-polish ser vice stations. In its heyday, the highway boasted such landmarks as the Spooklight in Quapaw, Oklahoma; the giant Jackalope in Fort Worth, Texas; Meteor Crater in Leeup, Arizona; the giant Rocketman in Wilmington, Illinois, and the Iceberg Café in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the 1940s and ’50s, hundreds of fancifully-designed motels, motor lodges, and motor cour ts sprang up along the great highway, many of which are still in operation today. One prominent feature of Route 66 was also the popular Burma Shave signs that dotted the landscape with their humorous poems from 1927 to 1963. Each phrase of a poem was on a different sign, sometimes miles apart. A rambunctious musical comedy, “Route 66” leads the audience along the great “Mother Road” in a nostalgic celebration of music and whimsical highway fun. The high-octane musical is performed and produced by Springer Theatricals which is on a 10-week tour of 27 states. In “Route 66,” a gang of rowdy Chicago service station attendants strip off their snappy Texaco uniforms and head off on a westward-bound road trip filled with music, dance, and highway mischief. The talented quartet of singing grease monkeys leave Chicago and follows the Mother Road down through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and concludes their travels at the beach in Santa Monica, California. The show features rock and pop music from the 1950s and ’60s including hit

My husband made them for several years, and each of his three daughters have kept up the tradition. The reason I thought they’d make a great Super Bowl food isn’t because they’re a good finger food. They’re more of a fist food. They aren’t particularly attractive — more like a lumpy miniature football. But you will definitely want to eat them. More than one! You can make ahead and keep them in the fridge in a sealed bag if you’ve got a lot planned. Then just warm them in the oven a bit.

AUDREY’S ARMADILLO EGGS 1 jar (16 oz.) whole jalapeno peppers, drained. 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1 pound pork sausage 2 (10 oz.) cans refrigerated biscuit dough Preheat oven to 350F Slice jalapenos lengthwise to remove seeds. Stuf jalapenos with cheese. Divide sausage into small balls and press the balls lat.

Place one stufed jalapeno on each sausage. Roll the jalapenos in the sausage, pressing it irmly. Place the wrapped jalapenos on a baking sheet, bake 40 to 50 minutes, until sausage is evenly brown. Remove and allow to cool (about 10 minutes). Arrange refrigerated biscuit dough on a medium baking sheet. Wrap one sausage and jalapeno roll in each piece of dough. Bake in the preheated oven 10 to 12 minutes, or until the biscuit is golden brown.

Here are a couple additional tips from my husband: • Don’t get the bargain refrigerated biscuit dough, go for the big ones. Otherwise, you’re piecing biscuits together. • He recommends buying lean sausage for this recipe. As far as supermarket brands go, he leans toward Bob Evans. My father-in-law, Bob Howe, was in the stockyard business for years. He had more than a few discussions about how to choose and how to cook good sausage with his son, so I’ll take his word for it.

INDIANAPOLIS — The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, along with the Bankruptcy Court, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Probation Office, Marshals Service, and Indiana Federal Community Defenders Inc. observes a Black History Month event Friday, Feb. 24. This year’s speaker is A’Lelia Bundles, Madam C.J. Walker’s great-great granddaughter and biographer. Madam Walker, born 150 years ago this December, is an Indianapolis legend, renowned for her entrepreneurial skills (she was one of the first female self-made millionaires) and philanthropy. Bundles will discuss Madam Walker and her attorney, Freeman B. Ransom, in a presentation titled, “An Amazing Partnership of Business and Law: Madam C. J. Walker and Attorney F. B. Ransom.” The event will take place at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse (46 East Ohio St., Indianapolis) on Feb. 24 from 2-3 p.m., in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom (courtroom 202). One hour of CLE credit is pending approval. Musical entertainment will be provided by the North Central High School Northernaires gospel choir, and refreshments will be provided following the program. Registration is not required.

Breivogel said at that moment she thought about her late grandmother and $2,000 came to mind. She won the TV with her guess, and was only $199 from the actual price. “I know it was her telling me,” she said. Although she lost all but the TV, she was grateful for the experience. “It didn’t matter that I lost everything — I was on ‘The Price is Right,’” Breivogel said. “The experience was just so cool.” She said she was worried her diagnosis with short-term sepsis, an infection in the blood stream, would put a damper on her

Breivogel said they were on the show Oct. 24, and for three months she had to keep the secret about what happened. “That was the hardest part,” Breivogel said. Cauliflower is mild, so it takes on whatever flavors you throw at it, which helps it be the convincing chameleon that it is. Cauliflower is as healthy as our moms told us, providing a hefty dose of vitamins, including C, K, B6 and folate, as well as smaller doses of other vitamins and minerals, plus filling protein and fiber. All in about 25 calories per cup. So, it’s a worthy vegetable, and now that it is available in “riced” form in mainstream grocery stores across the country, it’s time to take a look if you haven’t already. Let’s start with pizza crust. Steamed, riced cauliflower is mixed with a binder (usually egg and cheese), and then shaped into a pizza crust shape, baked and then topped with traditional pizza toppings. Bake up a few of these crusts and keep in the freezer for last minute pizza night that is healthier than takeout. Since my daughter is gluten-intolerant, I’ve been making pizza crust for years with cauliflower, resulting in a few key pieces of advice from the trenches. The biggest challenge with cauliflower crust is keeping it together, since there is no stretchy gluten working for you. But, no problem, if you follow my tips: First, once you cook the cauliflower, make sure to squeeze out as much moisture as possible. Excess water will keep the crust from staying together. In fact, I like to go a tiny step further and add just a little bit of absorbent flour - just a tablespoon or two of coconut or oat flour make a big difference. Next tip: bake the crust and flip it over before adding any toppings. If you aren’t flipping it, you can’t get the firm crusty texture to form, and that really helps the crust taste and feel pizza-like.

C

FOOLPROOF CAULIFLOWER PIZZA CRUST Start to finish: 40 minutes Servings: 4 small pizza crusts, 1 per serving 4-5 cups “riced” caulilower (buy it riced, or pulse in food processor until rice-sized) 1 egg 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1/2 cup grated part-skim mozzarella cheese 11/2 teaspoons granulated garlic 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 2 tablespoons of coconut lour (or other absorbent lour, such as oat or quinoa lour) Fine cornmeal for sprinkling, optional Salt and pepper Heat oven to 400 F. Place the riced caulilower in a microwave-safe dish with 2 tablespoons of water, cover and cook in microwave for 4-5 minutes, or until tender but not mushy. Remove from microwave, drain of water, gently pressing out excess moisture with a spoon, and cool. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk the egg with the cheeses, garlic and Italian seasoning. Place the cooled caulilower in several paper towels, or in a thin clean dish towel, and gently but irmly squeeze out excess moisture. (You may be surprised by how much liquid you can squeeze out.) Add the squeeze caulilower to the egg and cheese mixture. Sprinkle in the coconut lour, salt and pepper and mix well. Mixture will not stick together like regular dough. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with nonstick spray. Divide the dough into 3 or 4 mounds, and gently shape them into pizza crusts, doing your best to push the dough together to make clean edges. Bake until dark golden brown, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes. Flip with a spatula. If using, sprinkle the bottom of the sheet with a little cornmeal when you lip the crusts. Top the crusts with any sauce, cheese, toppings and bake until melted, about 10 more minutes. Tip: You can bake extra crusts without toppings and freeze them for future use. Life and legacy of the ‘forgotten’ Hoosier astronaut

FROM THE EARTH TO SPACE The early Cold War was defined by the quest to conquer space. Grissom edged out a list of 110 to become one of the countr y’s original seven astronauts in April 1959. Grissom’s space legacy began with his trip aboard the Liberty Bell 7 Mercury spacecraft. Alan Shepard was the first American in space, reaching the astral sky less than a month after Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. But Grissom was set to be the second American in space to prove the country’s capabilities. The Liber ty Bell 7 launched July 21, 1961. He flew a 15-minute sub-orbital flight — 118 miles high and 302 miles across at a top speed of 5,134 miles per hour. The journey set up John Glenn’s orbits of the Earth. It was a successful trip until the craft landed in the icy Atlantic Ocean. A malfunction caused the ship’s hatch to blow accidentally causing water to pour into the vessel. The sinking craft almost took Grissom with it. His suit was letting water in and letting air out, which he needed to stay buoyant. Death surrounded him. He said to himself, “Well, you’ve gone through the whole flight, and now you’re going to sink right here in front of all these people,” Grissom recounted in the book “We the Seven: By the Astronauts Themselves.” He never moved faster in his life, he said. “He had to fight like hell to keep his head above water, and he almost drowned,” Leopold said. He managed to survive, but the Liberty Bell 7 sank, where it sat at the bottom of the Atlantic

until the 1990s. Losing the spacecraft was hard on Grissom, who took it personally. Some members of the media did, too. Rather than focus on the accomplishment, repor ters led with the loss of the Liberty Bell. Leopold takes issue with author Tom Wolfe’s description of Grissom in his book “The Right Stuff,” which later became a movie. Wolfe accuses Grissom of being scared and exploding the Liberty Bell’s hatch, causing it to sink to the bottom of the Atlantic. The book and movie made lasting impressions of Grissom in pop culture. “ To m Wo l f e g o t i t wrong,” Leopold said. “He never would’ve been a test pilot if he had gotten scared.” It was not Grissom’s last touch of space. He became the first person to actually control a space craft, taking the commanding pilot’s seat for the Gemini 3 mission that launched on March 23, 1965. He and John Young flew three Ear th orbits in the ninth U.S. spaceflight. It was 80,000 miles in five-hour trip in a cramped two-person capsule. Grissom named the capsule “Molly Brown” after the play “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” — a nod to the Liberty Bell 7. NASA reportedly didn’t care for the name, but his second choice wasn’t much better to them: The Titanic. Grissom famously ate a few bites of a cor ned beef sandwich John Young sneaked on the flight. NASA and Congress didn’t see the humor in it. The tale is remembered at the Railroad Cafe in Mitchell, where “The Grissom” is a corned beef sandwich on the menu.

nd make Call Today a intment! an appo

The country was enamored with Grissom and Young. Mitchell and cities across New York held parades in their honor. President L yndon Johnson presented them with NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal. Around the time of the Gemini mission, Grissom expressed a fatalistic view of his service as an astronaut. “If there is ever a serious accident in the program, it’s probably going to be me,” Grissom told his wife, according to Andrew Chaikin’s “A Man on The Moon.” Scott Grissom said the entire family knew the risks Grissom took as an astronaut. “It was hard, but that was our family’s contribution to the country. It was letting my father go do those things. … We knew there was a risk, but my dad was extremely sharp and extremely capable, and we felt if there was any kind of issue, he would’ve been able to handle the situation,” he said. Each of Grissom’s missions, and the missions of the other astronauts, were pushing the countr y — mankind — closer to the moon. The Apollo Space Program was to do just that. Named after the god Apollo, who was said to ride his chariot through the sky and past the sun, Apollo 1 was the beginning of man’s ride to the moon. And it was the end for Grissom.

APOLLO 1: ‘WE’VE GOT A FIRE IN THE COCKPIT’ It was just supposed to a be routine test in preparation for a Feb. 21 launch into space. Grissom, White and Chaffe were the chosen to lead the first Apollo 1 mission — a 14-day trip

orbiting the earth. Jan. 27, 1967 was a test run. The three men suited up and entered the Apollo command module. The three men laid on their backs; their faces toward the sky. Suddenly, a sheet of fire. It was 6:31 p.m. when across the open mic was a single chilling word: “Fire.” NASA’s post-accident repor t indicated it was probably Grissom who said that. “We’ve got a fire in the cockpit,” Chaffe said. Six seconds later. “We’ve got a bad fire. Let’s get out.” The transmission was stopped by a scream. The fire lasted 25 seconds, because of the small amount of oxygen in the sealed craft. Less than a minute and they were dead. Autopsies indicated they died of asphyxiation, within seconds probably. But they badly burned in the accident. According to the Senate report on the incident, temperatures reached as high as 1,000 degrees in the cramped space. The craft had no emergency hatch — as the Liberty Bell 7 had. It was filled with 100 percent oxygen. The hatch wasn’t removed until five minutes after the fire. And firemen didn’t ar rive on scene until 9 minutes after the fire was reported. The men never had a chance.

Things Not Adding Up?

We always want our patients and their families to experience the Golden Difference. We recently received a wonderful testimonial from a family who was truly moved by the care their loved one, Alice, received at Golden LivingCenter - Petersburg. Alice’s brother, Dale Ready, shared that when it came time to put her in an extended care facility, his nephew researched the area and determined to put her in our LivingCenter. Dale said the family never worried about Alice, as she was very well taken care of and content. What the Ready family liked most about the facility was how diligently the staff cared for her, and kept the facility neat and clean. The family was one hundred percent, and said that the staff at our LivingCenter made sure to follow through on any suggestions or concerns the family had.

tunes like “King of the Road,” “Dead Man’s Curve,” “Six Days on the Road,” “Hot Rod Queen,” “I Get Around,” “Little Old Lady from Pasadena,” “GTO,” “Fun-Fun-Fun” and, of course, “Route 66.” Because of its comic antics and tight-harmony vocals, the show has been called a hybrid of Grease, Forever Plaid, and Pump Boys and Dinettes. The show’s author, Roger Bean, first created “Route 66” for the Milwaukee Reper tor y Theatre and then developed it further at the famous Oregon Cabaret Theatre. Bean has now turned the production over to the 145-year-old Springer Theatre, which is Georgia’s of ficial State Theatre. Springer producer Paul R. Pierce is excited about his company’s national tour of “Route 66.” “This production is

right up our alley,” says Pierce. “And plays to our strengths, too — lots of comedy, music, and stage surprises. The nostalgic qualities of Route 66 are irresistible. After all, the simple, innocent pleasures of cruising on desolate two-lane roads through towns like Oklahoma City, Joplin, Winona, Flagstaf f, and Barstow are nearly forgotten now. The sheer romance of highway travel is a reminder of that romance — in all its gas-guzzling, tail-finned, gaudy neon, art deco glory.” Springer Theatricals is the touring unit of the Springer Opera House, the State Theatr e of Georgia, based in Columbus. The Springer is one of America’s oldest and most celebrated theatre companies. Founded in 1871, it features a yearround schedule of plays and musicals and operates one of the nation’s biggest Theatre Ar ts training academies. The Springer also has one of America’s busiest touring itineraries, per forming

in some forty cities every year. In 1999, the Springer Opera House completed an elaborate $12 million historic restoration that has become a model for historic theatre preservation in the United States. Since Reconstruction days, the Springer has been a revered Southern cultural institution with the world’s most celebrated artists making pilgrimages to perform in the lavish Victorian elegance of its famous mainstage theatre. From Edwin Booth, Lillie Langtry, George M. Cohan, Ethel Barrymore, and Ir ving Berlin in the old days to more modern appearances by Mar y Martin, Truman Capote, Hal Holbrook, Burt Reynolds, Gar rison Keillor, and Mar vin Hamlisch, the Springer Theatre has been a centerpiece for the per forming ar ts in the South since 1871.
