Martha Sue Bates HAZLETON — Martha Sue Bates, 72, of rural Hazleton, passed away Friday, June 26, 2020, at Gibson General Hospital in Princeton. She was born Oct. 15, 1947, in South Roxana, Illinoi to the late Dale E. and Lucille (Christy) Hayes. Martha was of the Catholic faith. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother, she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Martha is survived by her husband of 39 years, Jerry R. Bates; a daughter, Gayla (Brent) Schafer; a granddaughter, Leesa M. West; a brother, Theodore (Leora) Hayes of South Roxana, IL; and also, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Ricky, Jack and Butch Hayes and also, three sisters, Shelba McEuen, Kathryn Whitaker and Judith Rigdon.

William G. Akles OAKLAND CITY — William G. Akles, 78, of Oakland City died Sunday, June 7, 2020. He was born June 22, 1941, in Shelbyville, Indiana to Homer and Katherine (Bridges) Akles. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Kenneth Akles; sister Becky Walls; and one grandson. He was an Army Veteran. He worked at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois, Whirlpool Corporation and was a maintenance supervisor at the Keensburg Mine. He is survived by his wife

VALIER, Ill. — Donna (Dossett) (Wallace) Grogan, 86, of Valier, Illinois passed away peacefully on May 16, 2020, at Stonebridge Nursing Center in Benton, Illinois. She was born in Princeton on Jan. 1, 1932. She was one of two children born to Marlin and Doris (Rumble) Dossett. She graduated from Princeton High School 1951. She worked at the Gibson County Recorders office and Lynn Gas in Princeton before moving to Valier. Donna was preceded in death by her parents. Ann Elizabeth ‘Libbi’ Douglas OWENSVILLE — Ann Elizabeth “Libbi” Douglas, 79, of Owensville, went to be with the Lord June 9, 2020. She was born Jan. 13, 1941, in Plant City, Florida to Fredrick Marion Dees and Alma Linnell Dees (Hutchinson). Libbi graduated from Plant City High School in 1958. She married the love of her life, Bobby Joe Douglas, Dec. 27, 1964. Libbi was devoted to her faith, she served as a Sunday School teacher and Children’s Youth Church leader for 50+ years. She enjoyed her travels to Florida and spending time with her family. Libbi enjoyed working in her flower garden. She was a member of Owensville General Baptist Church. Libbi was preceded in death by her parents, brother F.M. Dees, and sister Curtis Nell Hobby. Michael Ray Deputy FORT BRANCH — Michael Ray Deputy, 63, of Fort Branch, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh. He was born Sept. 5, 1956, in Princeton. He resided in Fort Branch for the past 10 years, having lived most of his lifetime in the Oakland City area and graduated from Wood Memorial High School in 1974. Mike is sur vived by his parents, Harold and Jo Ann (Grant) Deputy of Oakland City; brothers, Mark Deputy of Oakland City, Max Deputy (Sharon) of Francisco, Mitchell Deputy of Oakland City and Matthew Deputy (Sarah) of Fort Branch; also, several nieces and nephews. Nick was retired from Gibson County Sheriff’s Dept. and the Princeton City Police Dept., where he served as chief. He was also a deputy marshal in Haubstadt. Nick was the president of Princeton Area Betterment since 1980; founder of the Golden Heritage Days Festival in 1980; founder of Princeton’s Fourth of July Fireworks in 1983; founder of Princeton’s Winter Snowflakes in 2000; past president of the Salvation Army Board; chairman of You Can Help Food Drive at Christmas since 1994; Sagamore of the Wabash Award recipient; member of the Hall of Fame of Indiana Assoc. of Fairs, Festivals & Events; former president of Princeton Optimist Club; Eagle Scout and Boy Scout Leader; lifetime member of Gibson County Fair Board; member of Bethel Memorial Church; precinct committee for Republican Party; member of the GOP Hall of Fame; Princeton’s Citizen of the Year; Gibson

PRINCETON — Charles H. Miller, 82, of Princeton, passed away Tuesday, June 2 after a long battle with cancer. Charlie was born Dec. 18, 1937, to Herbert and Helen (Short) Miller and was one of thirteen siblings. Charlie worked as an Iron Worker for 37 years. He retired in 1995. Although he retired, he stayed busy working after retirement. You could find him helping at the church, working at his house and helping his family with whatever they may need. Nina M. Merrill CHANDLER — Nina M. Merrill, 87, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2020, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh. Nina was born Aug. 23, 1932, the daughter of Charles and Gladys Risley of Yankeetown, Indiana. She was a member of South Friendship Baptist Church in Boonville, Indiana. She worked a variety of retail and customer service jobs in Boonville and Princeton until she retired in 1992. Nina was an avid traveler, always up for an adventure, and loved taking trips to visit friends and family. Whether it was across the ocean to England, across the U.S. to Oregon, or to many nearby Midwestern and southern states, she was always looking forward to the next one. She was always going with family to visit other family members or to see historical places, homes, landmarks, etc., or just enjoying long drives around the countryside to shop, see nature, and have a great time! Nina loved to listen to country, bluegrass, and gospel music and thoroughly enjoyed frequent get-aways with her daughters and grandkids to bluegrass concerts or to see places like Graceland and Loretta Lynn’s home. She also loved to eat and was up for any occasion where we could all gather and have old favorites or try something new. At her insistence, ice cream would usually follow even if she couldn’t finish all of it. There wasn’t a grandchild who didn’t want to be with Granny (or “Ganny”)! Thelma A. White PIEDMONT, S.C. — Thelma Alfreda Hoovler White, 98, passed away June 5, 2020 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, South Carolina. She was born in the Pleasantville community in northwestern Pennsylvania Feb. 19, 1922, daughter of Floyd Marion and Olive Bingman Hoovler. She married George Quinton White, and the newly wed couple moved to Phillips Township in White County, Illinois during the oil boom of the 1940s. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Oakland City College, and later earned a master’s degree in theology. She became an elementary school teacher, starting in Brownsville School, and spending most of her career as an elementary teacher in Grayville, Illinois. In her retirement from teaching, she was an adult literacy volunteer. She had a passion for missionary work in Haiti and Belize. Through her support and mission work, the Thelma White Mission was built. In her younger years, she played mandolin and sang in a gospel quartet.

She was a charter member of the former Gospel Temple Pentecostal church in Carmi, Illinois, and also attended the Carmi Church of God. She later became a member of Salem Baptist Church in Anderson, South Carolina. Thelma loved traveling with her family, either by car trips across the country or flying. She and her husband were licensed pilots, and were members of the flying club at the Carmi Airport. She was also a member of Royal Neighbors, and the Business and Professional Women Club. she is preceded in death by her stepfather, Howard Strickland; her loving husband of 58 years, George Hoffman; and a grandchild, Christopher Hoffman. She is survived by

her children, Kathryn Hoffman of Haubstadt, Tim (Deonna) Hoffman of Poseyville, and Richard (Deborah) Hoffman of Raleigh, North Carolina; eight grandchildren, Adam, Nathan, Kyle, and Heath Hoffman, Amber Howard, Sean Gebhard, and Miranda Grimm; nine great-grandchildren, and several cousins and friends. Services will be private at the request of the family with a Celebration of Life service to be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sts.
