The loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in dif ferent ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Sur vivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and ser ve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one.

The benefits of preplanning your funeral METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral ser vices were conducted in accordance to their own wishes. Preplanning a funeral may sound morbid, as few people want to think about their deaths or discuss dying with their families. But there are numerous benefits to preplanning funerals. • Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just

what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those ser vices. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy. • Preplanning ensures your wishes are honored. Men and women who formalize their funeral plans will ensure their wishes are honored. That can give men and women peace of mind and will provide peace of mind to the loved ones they leave behind, who can attend funeral services knowing those ser vices are being conducted in adherence to their loved one’s wishes. Even men and women who discuss their wishes for their funerals with loved ones may not have those wishes honored if they are not put in writing. • Preplanning can help control costs. Preplanning often includes men and women setting aside money for their funerals before they pass away. Knowing that a funeral,

which can be expensive, is already paid for can provide additional peace of mind. Instead of worrying that their relatives will be forced to handle the burden of financing their funerals, men and women who preplan can rest easy knowing their insurance money and life’s savings will be going to their surviving loved ones and not toward paying for funeral expenses. • Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away. Preplanning a funeral may not be something to look for ward to, but doing so can protect families and provide men and women with some peace of mind.

Tracing your geneaology is made easy with technology and the Internet METRO CREATIVE CONTENT plete picture of family rela-

The internet has put more information into our hands than generations past may have ever believed possible. One of the more unique ways the internet has opened doors is by providing a relatively easy way for men and women to trace their family histories. Once difficult to gather, information with regard to genealogy is now just a click away. Tracing one’s genealogy has become a popular pastime and one that is much more manageable thanks to the bevy of family tree and family lineage websites. Such sites work by gathering some key information, including the names and birthdays of certain relatives. The sites then use this data to create a more com-

tions. On the popular genealogy site Ancestry.com, for example, suggestions pop up with a potential relative’s name or further information about a loved one, which can then populate the family tree even further. In addition to knowing just who is in a family, tracing genealogy also can present a bigger picture of relatives’ occupations and military history, and may even shed light on their travel histories. Family tree sites can be enhanced by uploading images, census data, immigration records, and even more documents that would be otherwise buried in photo albums or memory keepsakes. Taking family geneaology a step further, many people are opting to couple

their family history quests with DNA testing. Companies such as 23andMe can use a saliva sample to help pinpoint potential geographic roots. These findings can include an estimate on ethnicity, going as far as breaking down the percentage of ethnicity from certain regions of the world. Further testing may include the ability to learn about other relatives who are linked through these DNA matches. Family geneaology websites can provide fascinating windows into our family histories. People who are unsure of their ethnicity, those who were adopted, or anyone who is just curious about how their families began can find a wealth of interesting information in relatively little time.

ARTWORK GALLERY

Children routinely bring home artwork they made in school, daycare and other organized classes. Sometimes these items get stashed in plastic containers that are ultimately stored in attics or basements, only to be “discovered” years later. Rather than relegating them to storage, invest in frames of various sizes and hang the pictures as if they were in an art gallery.

ing such information in the obituar y may find it helps them avoid having to answer numerous inquiries about the loved one’s demise at the ensuing visitation and funeral services. • Include some biographical information. Obituaries are typically more than simple announcements of death. Some simple biological information can shed light on who the deceased was and his or her personal and professional accomplishments. Biographical information like full name, place of birth, family (i.e., spouse, children, grandchildren, etc.), militar y ser vice, place of employment, charity work, and hobbies can give readers an accurate idea of the life your loved one lived. • Include donation information. Well-wishers who read the obituar y may want to send flowers or make donations to express their condolences. Include the family preference regarding flowers or donations in the obituar y. When requesting donations be made to the deceased’s favorite charity, include the charity’s full name and contact information or a website in the obituary. • Include visitation and funeral information. Be sure to include the day, location and visitation hours for viewings. If the funeral will be public, include the day and time of the funeral as well. • Have the obituar y ready one to two days before the ser vices are scheduled. Publishing the obituar y a couple of days in advance of visitation hours gives loved ones of the deceased time to arrange to visit and pay their respects.

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Even those comfor ted by the acknowledgment that a recently deceased friend or family member lived a full life may still str uggle with the sense of loss that comes with the passing of a loved one. Upon the passing of a loved one, an individual is often tasked with writing an obituar y. Some people may find writing an obituar y is cathartic, providing an opportunity to tell a loved one’s life stor y and indicate how unique the deceased was. Because writing an obituary is not something people are asked to do every day, it’s understandable if many men and women don’t know where to begin. Obituaries do not necessarily have to follow a formula, but the following tips can help people compose an obituar y that conveys who their deceased loved one was and how much this person meant to friends and family. • If submitting an obituar y individually and not through a funeral home, be aware that some newspapers may have obituary guidelines that govern things like writing style and obituary length. • Do not feel obliged to include cause of death. While acquaintances who first learn of a person’s death via an obituar y may be curious about cause of death, loved ones of the deceased do not have to include such information if they are uncomfortable doing so. Many obituaries never include such information, so readers likely won’t expect it. Those who are comfor table includ-
