Gibson Southern Titans reload on gridiron

FOR T BRANCH — The Gibson Southern football team may have the most coveted player in Southern Indiana in sophomore signal caller Brady Allen.

After making a splash last season, Allen has already picked up several of fers from Division I college programs.

But Titans head coach Nick Hart knows his team is about more than just a one-man show.

“We are pretty talented at our skill positions led by Brady, Ben Butler and Mitch Spindler, but we also feel like we are talented at every level on both sides of the ball,” the Titans coach said.

Gibson Southern finished with a 9-3 record last season and will have some holes to fill on both sides of the ball.

Hart was quick to point out they do not have to replace as much as what it

appears on paper.

“We lost two or three (starters) on offense, depending on how you classify but seven on defense, but we played so many guys last season,” the coach explained. “We have a ton of experience returning although many of them may not have been starters they still were in a lot of rotations for us.”

Hart noted the offense is clicking well in the preseason and the big reason is due to a solid offensive line.

“Braden Tucker is a big guard for us who plays really physical,” Hart stated. “Then we also have returning starters Macray Robinson and Aaron Breivogel. Eli Ziliak is playing really great for us at center and we also have Alex Breivogel and Ryan Holzmeyer so we feel like we have six very solid guys up front for us.”

Robinson will also be anchoring the defensive line as a rare two-way player.

Blake Stuckey and Logan Fauquher will also be key players on the d-line.

Max Beadles and Caleb Sellers roam the middle of the defense as the Titans’ linebackers.

“They both have had really solid summers for us,” Har t said of his senior linebackers.

The biggest question mark for Gibson Southern will be how Hart utilizes his secondary.

Defensive back Brayden Malone was lost in the Titans scrimmage against Evansville Central on Aug. 16.

“We are going to have to go back to the drawing board with what we do in the secondary since we are a little banged up,” the seventh-year coach of the Titans stated.

Colton Stefanich will anchor the secondar y as he was an All-Pocket Athletic Conference safety last season.

Isaac Gross and Noah Bryant have also impressed Hart in the Titans’ secondary.

younger players are going to have to step up by season’s end.

“The thing about this team is 1-22 or 23 or 24, I feel great about,” he stated. “We don’t like to play a lot of players both ways so some of our guys who are going to start out on the junior varsity are going to have to grow up and get better so we can build out depth along the way.”

As for team goals, although he does not like them, Hart mentioned there’s always one goal every season.

“I hate team goals because I will never not coach a team and not have the end goal be to win a state championship,” he said. “But there are also some certain goals you can achieve along the way. We did not win a conference or sectional last season, so there are a couple things we hope to be able to do this year.”

Gibson Southern opened its season Aug. 23 against visiting PAC foe Forest Park.

Tigers hope 5A teams early benefit later

PRINCETON — Just like last season, the Princeton Community football team will open their season against a pair of bigger schools in 5A Evansville North and 5A Terre Haute North.

But don’t feel sorry for the Tigers in their final tuneup for the final season of Big Eight Conference football.

“The difference in classes is depth, the number of bodies. But football is football, and we try to think of it that way rather than think about class difference,” said Coach Jared Maners, whose Tigers seek to rise from 3-7 records in each of his first two seasons.

“If we execute, we’ll be in good shape on Friday nights. We’re a young team with a lot of sophomores, but there’s no game we can’t win. We definitely can compete with everyone on our schedule.”

The former Oakland City University basketball guard standout, and husband of Lady Tigers basketball coach Brittany

Maners, is encouraged by what he has seen this summer.

“Our guys are learning to play at a higher speed. In late-July we had a good scrimmage at Edgewood, which has dropped from 4A to 3A and will be in our sectional.

Our guys played hard up there. And we also played pretty well against Tecumseh in our last scrimmage.

“Our offensive line is much improved over last year. And while we’re young on defense, experience will get our guys playing faster and better.

“It’s about playing hard, playing with speed, doing the fundamentals and all the little things right.”

While Maners said the starting offensive and defensive lineups will be determined by what he sees in practice each week, meaning they can change, he is impressed by several sophomores.

“Chemar McKinney is playing at a different level than a lot of guys. He’ll be a special one,” the head coach said of the 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive tackle.

“Myles Carey (6-3 brother of graduated basketball guard starter Hunter Carey) is an impressive receiver in his first year of football. “He has caught all the passes thrown to him in our live scrimmages. Not a single drop.

“Colton Smith is a very physical strong safety who understands he can also play linebacker. Not only has Colton improved physically, he’s a pretty good athlete.”

Maners also said junior offensive guard Caleb Hiatt. A 180-pounder, is “about as physical as anybody we’ve had. He’s not the biggest lineman, but he puts his pads on people and also pulls really well in getting to linebackers.”

Senior quarterback Gerit Bock, who last season completed 87 of 209 passes for 1,056 yards and seven touchdowns against 11 interceptions, has risen by experience.

“Gerit has come a long way. His feet and pocket presence have improved, and he knows our offense as well as anyone,” said Maners, who early this century quarterbacked an Owen Valley High program

that also is a potential sectional foe after dropping from 4A. “I think he has thrown just one interception all summer.”

Junior wide receiver Dominic Hardiman, who caught 27 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns in 2018, “has started to become a football player instead of just relying on his athleticism. Not only is he catching the ball, he’s blocking.”

Senior tailback Darrion Madison, a 5-8, 185-pounder who last year rushed 559 yards and seven touchdowns in 119 carries, a 4.7 average, is “an old-school throwback who runs hard. Darrion doesn’t wow you with speed, but he has good football sense, pushes ahead and gets positive yards.”

The Tigers will open the last Big Eight season September 6 at Washington, then host Mount Carmel and visit Gibson Southern before facing four straight Big Eight foes and then entering a sectional that also includes Brown County for the first time.

Titan harriers look to sustain success

FOR T BRANCH — Both the boys and girls Gibson Souther n cross countr y teams qualified for the semistate a season ago.

The boys captur ed a sectional title and was r unner up at the regional before placing eighth at the

semistate.

The Lady T itans finished third and four th at the sectional and regional, respectively and was 17th at the semistate.

Veteran coach Jeremy A ydt is hoping both teams can once again reach the same level of competitiveness and then see just how far each

team can go.

“We want to be competing our best at the semistate,” the 12-year Titans coach said.

On the boys side, the Titans will need to replace top r unner Travis Har t who graduated a season ago and is running at NCAA Division I University of Southern Illinois.

Top contender for the Titans will be Zach Purcell.

The senior was an All-Pocket Athletic Conference performer last season with a sixth-place finish — three spots behind Har t — in addition to being named to the IATCCC All-State SEE TITAN/PAGE 7

team and IATCCC Academic AllState team.

Aidan Neel will be another top r unner for the Titans. As a junior, Neel was a second team All-PAC selection with a 13-place finish. Neel was also named to the IATCCC AllState team on the honorable mention list.

Cross Epperson, Patrick Jones and Wade Happe are three more senior r unners for the Titans who return from last season’s semi-state team.

Happe landed on the IATCCC Academic All-State team as an honorable mention selection.

Last season the Titans placed in the top three of five invitationals including being crowned champions in three of the five.

On the girls side, the Lady Titans return three runners who were 2nd team All-PAC — Ashley Evetts (12), Olivia Pennington (16th) and Raegan Heldt (17th).

Helen Kiesel also retur ns from last season and sophomore Taylor Har t is expected to be among the Lady Titans top runners this season.

Aydt mentioned the team goals are the same for both teams.

“We want to represent ourselves

and the Gibson Southern cross countr y teams to the best of our abilities,” the Titans coach said. “We also want to finish in the Top 5 or better in all of the invitationals we compete in, win the conference, win the sectional, finish in the Top 5 at the regional and compete to the best of our ability at the semistate.”

In the early par t of the season, the veteran coach mentioned he is pleased with what he is seeing from both teams.

“So far both teams are training hard and working to become better and fit each and ever y day,” he said.

“I also love all the support they show each other and the camaraderie they have built as a group.”

Gibson Southern opened the season on Aug. 17 at the Valley Cross Kickoff at LaVern Gibson Championship Course which is the site of the IHSAA State Finals.

Tiger harriers looking for new leader

PRINCETON — Who will be the leader?

That’s the Princeton Community boys cross countr y question as Bill Niederhaus star ts “my 34th or 35th season” as head coach.

It’ll take a team ef for t following the graduation of Jackson Krieg, now an Indiana State University freshman runner after capturing Big Eight Conference and Pike Central Regional medalist honors, placing second in sectional and seventh at semi-state, and then running through a rib dislocation to complete the state meet.

“Jackson dislocated the rib at sectional, but it didn’t bother him again until state,” said Niederhaus, whose 10-man roster includes six from the 2018 team that placed third in the Big Eight and fifth at sectional.

Krieg, by the way, is the only Princ-

eton boy to become regional medalist.

The 2019 Tigers’ only senior is Noah Klomski.

“Noah has made great strides ever y year. Plus he’s a team leader who keeps ever yone together and helps ever yone improve,” the coach said.

Spencer Brittingham, Cooper Clark and Jacob Moore form the junior trio.

“All three have improved, and one of these four older guys will be our No. 1 runner,” Niederhaus said.

“Our competition for the No. 1 role will be very close. Regardless of who finishes as our No. 1 in each meet, our next three or four won’t be far behind.”

Niederhaus expects three others to push for the No. 5 spot that completes team scoring in cross country.

“Xander Lutz is showing improvement as a sophomore,:” Niederhaus said.

“Caleb Stilwell (no relation to former Wood Memorial athlete and former Princeton boys basketball coach Brian Stilwell) has shown a lot in practice. When Caleb is feeling well, he can run with anybody.

“Devyn Jernigan is a freshman in his first cross countr y season at any level. He ran track as an eighth grader this spring, and this preseason he has made progress.

Sophomores Dakota Jackson and Blake Compton and freshman Blake Smith complete the team.

“Dakota’s first cross countr y season at any level was his freshman year. Blake Compton’s progress has been slowed by an ankle sprain that sidelined him three weeks. And Blake Smith is learning,” Niederhaus said.

This will mark Princeton’s last Big Eight Conference cross countr y run since the league will fold after this school year. Next season the Tigers

will vie against archrival Gibson Southern and others in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Said Niederhaus: “We look for improvement throughout this season. And let’s see who can make the final All-Big Eight Team.”

Lady Tigers cross country team already improved

PRINCETON — As the son of longtime Princeton Community coach Bill Niederhaus, and brother of fellow Tiger athletes Nate and Justin, Will Niederhaus knows the value of team.

For more reasons than this, that is his focus in his first season as Lady Tigers cross countr y coach following his two years as Oakland City University men’s and women’s cross country coach.

“Our eight girls include a sophomore and seven freshmen, so our goals are for the girls to push each other and get better through the season. We want our times to improve with every meet,”

said 25-year-old Will Niederhaus, whose Lady Tigers opened their season in Saturday’s Boonville Invitational.

However young they are, the Lady Tigers are already ahead of their 2018 predecessors.

“Last year’s team started the season with four girls and finished with just one,” Niederhaus noted.

“It’s exciting to work with these eight since they support each other and want to grow together and get better.”

The Lady Tigers’ lone veteran is sophomore Laci Spore.

“Laci was the only girl to finish the season last fall,” Niederhaus said.

“She was our only runner in the Big Eight Conference and sectional meets.

In finishing 27th at sectional, she was

just one place away from advancing to regional from teams that didn’t advance.

“This year we expect her to make the regional. Except for last cross country season, she has been mainly a 400dash runner. Now she’s building her distance ability.”

Speaking of team, the Lady Tigers include two sets of twins. Haley and Heidi Meade are daughters of Judge Jef frey Meade. Their teammates include the Phillips twins, Desiree and Delaney.

“Haley and Heidi are ver y disciplined. They’ve done a lot of long distance running this summer,” said their coach, who added, “They may be our No. 1 and No. 2 runners.

“Desiree and Delaney don’t know how good they can be. They’ll grow throughout the year.”

Kyndall Anthis has made an early impression.

“We expect Kyndall to be up there with Leci,” Niederhaus said.

Lexi Brown and Gracie Bush complete the octet.

“Lexi will grow throughout the year.

She’s a team leader as a pusher and really pushing the Phillips girls,” said Niederhaus, a 2013 Princeton grad who, like Nate and Justin, played basketball between cross countr y and track seasons.

“Gracie came to us the first week of preseason. She is getting in shape and showing potential.”

Lady Titans expecting big things on the links

E VA N S V I L L E - - T h e G i b s o n Southern girls golf team is loaded with talent this season and will look to build on a successful 2018 campaign.

The Lady Titans return their top four golfers from a team who finished 15-4 in 9-hole matches last season and an overall record of 60-11.

Gibson Southern finished with a 9-hole scoring average of 185 and an 18-hole average of 375.

Seniors Allie Sensmeier and Claire Jones are expected to battle for the top spot this season.

“Allie is a solid player who has dominantly held our No. 1 spot for the last two seasons,” third-year head coach Cliff Ir vin said. “She is full of experience.”

Jones qualified for the state finals a season ago and placed 75 in the field of 100 golfers.

“Claire is a smooth fell player who

is great around the greens with her touch,” Ir vin said. “And she is long off the tee.”

Liz Angermeier and Hillar y Humbaugh round out the Lady T itans top four players who are expected to score ever y match this season.

“Liz is a solid No. 3 for us,” the Lady T itans coach noted. “Her scores never var y much from the mid to low 40’s. Her shots are always well struck and on target. She is a ver y dependable scorer for us.”

At No. 4, Ir vin mentioned he is expecting big things out of Humbaugh over the next couple of seasons. Consistency will be key for Humbaugh, according to her coach.

“She can bomb her tee shots and has a tight short game, but she can also have some er rant shots from time-to-time as well,” Ir vin stated.

“But she is a really good sophomore player and with her happy-go-lucky demeanor, she could be deadly in coming years.”

Rounding out the varsity roster for Gibson Southern will be first-year varsity players Jessie Ir vin and Vanessa Schmitt.

“Jessie has been working hard to develop her game with professional instructors,” the Lady Titans coach said of his No. 5 golfer.

Schmitt is another player who has a cool, calm and collective demeanor and has a “solid swing and a great attitude,” according to Ir vin.

Gibson Souther n already has a couple of tournaments and nine-hole matches under their belts. They also possess a pair of wins over No. 10 ranked Evansville Memorial, who return five of its six players from last season’s state finalist team.

“Overall the girls are playing good but they know they can always play better,” Ir vin said. “But I am liking their confi dence, vibes and attitude so far this season.

“We are hoping to win conference, sectional and get out of the regional

as a team this year.”

Lady Tigers looking for steady improvement

PRINCETON -- The Princeton Community girls golf team returns four players fr om last season’s team and second-year head coach Andrew Johnson is excited for what the future holds for his team. “We had a great season last year of growing with a new core so with four girls returning we are hoping ever yone can continue to improve their scores,� Johnson said.

The Lady Tigers lost two players to graduation including regional qualifier Haley York.

Sophomore Reaghan Cochren is expected to be the Lady Tigers top golfer this season. “She is a competitor who demands a lot from herself,� Johnson said. “With that drive and natural ability, I am excited about her future.�

Behind Cochren will be the lone senior on the team, Brittany Griffin.

She’s been a great teammate and a steady player,� the Lady Tigers coach said. “She is always willing to help lead the younger girls and I am ver y proud to be her coach.�

Accor ding to Johnson, sophomore Lexi Bane may be the most improved golfer on the team. “She has advanced so much since last year where she star ted,� he said. “In golf there are always things to work on but she is ver y willing to tr y anything to get better. That is the kind of approach any coach wants to see.�

One of the longest hitters on the team will be sophomore Katie Dunkel. Johnson mentioned she just needs to fine tune a couple of things and the sky will be the limit for her.

“Once she gets her timing and finds the bottom of the arc there won’t be a shot she can’t hit,� the coach said. “Her swing is ver y long which means it can produce some of the best and far thest shots on the team.�

Rounding out the Lady T igers roster will be fr eshmen Carissa Brown and Tabi Thompson.

Johnson mentioned they have the potential to evolve into good players. “They both have great raw potential,� the coach stated. “We are excited they are on the team and I am expecting, with time, they are going to be really good players.�

Johnson mentioned all the players have shown the ability and eagerness to improve all aspects of their game. “They will try anything to get bet-

ter,� he said. “Right now we are focusing on contact and our short game.�

Titans look to reload on the pitch

FOR T BRANCH -- Losing seven of 11 star ters to graduation would spell a rebuilding season for most programs.

But Gibson Southern boys soccer coach Chris Bar thel is expecting his Titans to reload this season and build on its 14-3-4 mark from last season.

“We were a ver y deep team and we still have plenty of talent for

this year,” the second-year Titans head coach said.

Half of the Titans’ wins a season ago came from r unning the table in the Pocket Athletic Conference.

Their season came to a hear tbreaking end with a 2-1 loss to No. 2 ranked Washington in the Class 2A sectional championship.

The two teams played to a tie in their regular season matchup.

Washington went on to dominate in the regional before drop-

ping a 1-0 decision in the semistate.

Gibson Southern star ts this season with a No. 11 ranking in the state polls.

The T itans retur n a pair of seniors and two juniors among their four star ters.

Jake Novotny and Ethan Reinbrecht are the seniors, while David Hirsch and Justin Bar thel were star ting as sophomores a season ago.

Novotny is an outside back and “ser ves the ball really well,” according to his coach.

Reinbrecht moves from outside back to center back and is “ver y fast and dependable.”

Hirsch was a center back last season and will make the switch to defensive mid this year and is a “skillful player with a desire to win.”

Bar thel is expected to be a forward for the majority of the time he is on the field.

“Last year he was our center mid and occasionally played center back in some big games,” the TItans coach stated of his for ward.

“He is a great possessor of the ball with remarkable field vision.”

Preston Riggs was par t of the Titans depth last season and will be playing the second for ward this season as well as some time as an outside mid.

Ryan Ziliak will star t in net for the Titans this season.

“He is an aggressive keeper and a great shot blocker,” coach Barthel noted.

Dani Hirsch is another player who saw time up on the varsity last

season and will be star ting as an outside back this season.

“He is a ver y scrappy player with good speed,” the Titans coach said.

Jake Romershausen (center mid), Mosbah Alshwikh (utility), Chris Spear (center back) and Erick Hirsch (left outside mid) are all players who played on the junior varsity a season ago but will be stepping into varsity action this year.

Bar thel mentioned the team is aiming for another conference championship in addition to winning a sectional.

“I am ver y pleased with the level of talent we have this year,” he stated. “Really we are just hoping we can keep playing for as long as we can.”

New Lady Titan coach ready to lead her alma mater

FOR T BRANCH -- Sylvia Adler is no stranger to winning.

The former stalwar t on the pitch helped lead Gibson Southern to the state championship game in 2013

where she was named the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award winner.

Adler finished up her stellar career as the Lady Titans all-time leading goal scorer (104) and also holds the record for most goals in a single season (38).

Last season, she was a par t of the coaching staf f at Mater Dei as an assistant coach and helped the Lady Wildcats to a state championship.

Adler hopes to bring those winning ways back to Gibson Southern as she begins her first season in

charge of her alma mater.

“We do have some goals set for the season and one of those includes beating last year’s season record of 7-7,” she said. “We also SEE COACH/PAGE 17

want to be successful in the conference and in the postseason.”

Saddie Holzmeyer and Katerina Sparks will help assist Adler this season.

Adler mentioned seniors Sydney Goedde and Maggie Rose will be co-captains for the Lady Titans.

“They are both great leaders and talented players,” the new head coach said.

Kyra Menke and Nicole Richter are expected to “play a big role in the center of the field.”

Both players are juniors.

Junior Stephanie Cullom will be protecting the net for Gibson Southern.

“She has a high skill set for her position,” Adler said of her netminder.

Junior Marissa Dewig and freshman Hailey Richter are both expect-

ed to have significant impacts on the Lady Titans this season as well.

Depth will not be an issue for the Lady T itans this season as Adler will have 35 players in the program.

The coach is especially excited with the younger players on the roster.

“The sophomore class has some fast players and they are connecting really well with the team,” Adler stated.

She is also pleased with what she is seeing in the early par t of the season.

“The girls have a hashtag this year of #makeitcount,” the coach said. “And I fully believe that they will make it count because the have already been doing that in practices.

“Our team has fun and we all love soccer. We focus on getting better both individually and as a collective unit.

Tigers return majority of starters on the pitch

PRINCETON -- With eight star ters retur ning from last season’s 10-6-2 team, the Princeton boys soccer team is looking to build on their success from a season ago.

The Tigers ran into a buzzsaw in the Class 2A sectional in the form of No. 2 ranked Washington.

The Hatchets went on to capture the sectional and regional championships before falling 1-0 in the semistate.

This season’s success will star t keeper Braden Matthews.

The Tigers’ goalie will be star ting between the pipes for the four th straight season and is coming of f earning all-state honors last year.

Leading the attack will be another four year star ter in the form of Licson Regis.

“He will be our star ting attacker for the four th straight year and is ver y speedy with some great foot skills,” Tigers coach Brad Woods said.

Two other key contributors are Cole Hur t and Peyton Pr yzymus.

Both players will be star ting for the T igers for the third straight season.

“Cole is a great all-around player who can play any position,” Woods said. “And Peyton is another good all-around player who we are counting on to create some big goals for us this season.”

C.J. Merrified and Oscar Villalobos are two more retur ning players for the Tigers who have “really stepped up as leaders this year,” according to Woods.

Woods also expects newcomer Drew Morris to provide a spark for the Tigers this season.

“He just joined the team this year and has already shown a lot of potential,” the Tigers coach stated.

“And he is ver y athletic.”

Morris is also a member of the Tigers tennis team.

The coach mentioned he is pleased with the way the team is passing the ball in the early par t of the season.

“As a team we are moving the ball at a much faster pace than last year,” Woods said.

The T igers will lean on the experience of their returning players and Woods is hoping that experience can translate to being able to finish matches better this year.

“Most of our star ters have a lot of varsity experience which

should help a lot,” the coach said.

“But our biggest key to a successful season will be finishing our oppor tunities. Our team is talented enough to create chances against anybody but the dif ference between good teams and gr eat teams are the ones who can take advantage of those oppor tunities.”

Although the T igers finished four th in the conference last season, which was won by Washington, Woods is not shying away from their team goals.

“We play in a ver y tough conference and sectional, but those are our targets this year.”

Princeton opened its season August 20 at South Spencer.

PCHS grad to lead girls soccer program

PRINCETON -- A familiar face retur ns to the sidelines for the Princeton Community girls soccer program.

Patrick Donnell takes over the reins of the program at his alma mater after spending last season as an assistant coach at Gibson Southern.

Donnell was also a four-year player in college at Oakland City University.

The first-year head coach inherits a team who finished with a 2-9 record a season ago and graduated three players.

Donnell is hoping the team can turn the corner this season.

“The biggest thing we have to do to be successful is to just keep improving each day,” the first-year coach stated. “I preach to the girls ever y day that they should never be satisfied with just being good enough. No matter how hard we are working there is always someone better than us.”

A key player for the Lady Tigers this season will be senior Jessi Gofor th.

“Jessi will be a major par t of our defense this year,” Donnell said.

“She has been a big leader over the summer.”

Caliegh Cates is another returning star ter on the Tigers’ defense and “has been pushing the girls to improve ever yday,” according to Donnell.

Gracy Key will be star ting in the net again this season.

The Lady Tigers coach has also been impressed with the play of Clara Heldt.

“She made some huge strides this summer and is setting herself up for a break-out season,” the coach said.

Donnell mentioned he is liking the progress the team has shown throughout the summer and the early par t of the preseason.

“They are all working hard and are holding each other accountable,” the Lady Tigers coach said.

“They are building the foundation one brick at a time.

“I am ver y excited to get my head coaching career star ted with this team. They are hard workers and want to improve ever y day, but above all else they are caring individuals.”

Trojans to lean on senior leadership

OAKLAND CITY -- Despite earning just one win all season, the Wood Memorial boys soccer team nearly pulled of f an upset in the Class A sectional.

The Trojans led South Spencer most of the way before falling losing in overtime to the eventual sectional champions.

Veteran head coach Josh Stolz is hoping his team can build from the sectional loss, this season.

“We are hoping to show improvement this year,” the 14-year head coach stated. “We want to contend in the Blue Chip Conference and we want to be playing our best heading into the postseason.”

Wood Memorial lost four star ters to graduation and one more who did not come out for the program this year.

But the Trojans will have eight seniors to turn to for leadership this season.

Captains will be Justin Strickland and Logan Keeker.

“Both players will be key to our defense with a lot of experience and both are ver y quick,” Stolz said of his captains.

“He is one of the best ball handlers and we look for him to become a real playmaker for us this season,” the Trojans coach said.

Stolz mentioned she has picked up from where she left of f two years ago and “brings a vocal personality to practices and plays with a lot of tenacity and she will not back down from anyone.”

Josh Stephens is another experience player and is expected to be a midfielder/for ward this season.

Christian Hillyar d is the T r ojans final senior and continues to improve, according to Stolz.

“He has not been playing soccer for ver y long but he is active and is confident in his abilities,” the Tro-

jans coach said. “He has continued to improve ever y year and he is another player who we expect to see time at a number of positions.”

Stolz mentioned what the team lacks in experience they make up for with their athleticism.

“This is one of the most athletic groups I think we have had in several years,” the veteran coach said.

“Many of our players don’t have a lot of experience as they first started soccer in high school, but they have worked hard to improve and they are all a good natured group that really seems to enjoy being together.”

Titan netters will lean on veterans

FOR T BRANCH -- The Gibson Southern boys tennis team lost just two starters from last season’s team who posted an 11-6 record.

In addition to having five returning starters back, the Titans will also add another player with varsity experience as Maxwell Braselton returns after a missed season due to an illness.

“We have a very veteran team this year and the kids are excited to get going,” veteran coach Terr y Wallace said. “In addition to our experienced varsity group, we also have some very good kids on the junior varsity level who are working hard in practice and not only getting better themselves but they are also pushing the varsity guys to be better.”

Jarrett Klusmeier played at No. 1

singles last season, but Wallace expects he will have some competition to keep the top spot this season.

“Max and Evan Birch will compete with Jarrett for the No. 1 singles spot, with the other two falling into place at No. 2 and No. 3 singles,” Wallace explained.

Birch played at No. 1 doubles last season.

Wallace will have options for who he pairs together in the doubles matches.

Br yce Simpson, Devon Bullock Caleb Shoultz, Justin Bullock and Logan McClain will all compete for the four spots on the two doubles teams.

Simpson played at No. 2 doubles last season, while Shoultz played in some singles matches.

After a four th-place finish in the Pocket Athletic Conference last season, Wallace is hoping for a better result

this season.

“We would love to win the PAC this season, but our main goal is winning the sectional,” the 12-year veteran coach stated. “The main thing for us is to stay healthy and make sure we come out focused every match.”

Wallace also mentioned the team knows their potential and they are putting in the necessary work to achieve its goals.

“I really like their work ethic already this season,” the Titans coach said.

“They realize we have a pretty solid team and they would like to see us do well. They are bonding well as a team and all our veteran guys are helping out the younger players which is always good to see.”

Gibson Southern was scheduled to open its season at home against Evansville North on Aug. 20.

Lady Titans look to take next step on court

FORT BRANCH -- Since taking over at Gibson Southern, Emily Schmitt has guided the Lady Titans’ volleyball team to a pair of 20-plus win seasons.

Last season, the Lady Titans finished with a 22-9 mark (second best in program histor y) before falling to Evansville Memorial in the sectional title game.

With four seniors returning this season, Gibson Southern is hoping is hoping to claim a sectional this season.

“This group plays well together and their communication is much better this season,” the third-year coach said.

“We are hoping to win the PAC (Pocket Athletic Conference) and get a sectional win.”

Megan Niehaus returns as a middle blocker and a player who will play in all six rotations. The senior brings a wealth of experience to the team as a four-year member of the varsity.

“When blocking, Megan reads the offense very well,” Schmitt said. “She was our leading blocker last season with 62...she is a huge presence on the floor and one of our best communicators.”

Meredith Raley will make a switch from outside hitter to setter this season.

Schmitt mentioned with Raley’s size and versatility the senior will also see some time as a second attacker.

“Meredith is a fantastic athlete and always gives 100 percent,” the Lady Titans coach said. “She is a strong leader and calming presence on the floor for the other players. She is also a very smart player who does a great job of bettering the ball no matter what the situation.”

After sitting out her freshman year, Raley will be a three-year player.

Flexibility will be key for Tiger netters

PRINCETON -- This season marks the 40th and final season for the Big Eight Conference.

Princeton Community tennis coach Matt Moade has been around for a lot of those seasons and he is hoping the last season is a memorable one for his Tigers.

Princeton finished fourth in league play last year against a tough field.

The Tigers return all their starters from last season and has a whole lot of depth.

“We have everyone back from last year, which is a plus, and we have some young guys we expect to step up and help make a difference this year,” the veteran coach said. “Our conference is unbelievably tough which only makes us better. And Jasper may be a little too good to beat, but I hope we can compete with them and do well in the conference in the last season for the Big Eight.”

Lance Stuckey is expected to be the Tigers top singles player, while sophomore

Garrett Scott and junior Jevin Huey will be slotted in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, on the singles court.

Seniors Hunter McCandless and Collin Holzmeyer will be the top tandem for the Tigers.

Freshman Cade Hurt and sophomore Drew Morris are expected to be paired at No. 2 doubles to start the season.

But Moade mentioned the success of the team this year is going to depend on the flexibility of the players.

“Our lineup is going to look different based on what night we end up playing,” he explained. “Four of our top 11 players are also in band and Drew is also going to be playing a little soccer, so we will be shuffling the lineup quite a bit. We are going to have to be very flexible to say the least.”

Moade mentioned a lot of his experienced players played doubles in the early stages of their playing career which will be beneficial in the shakeups from timeto-time.

Aside from the flexibility, Moade mentioned the team’s success will also hinge on not giving away points.

“We need to be better with our serves and our volleys,” the Tigers coach said.

“We need to be at least 70 percent on hitting in our first serves and not miss at the net. We have to cut down on unforced errors and can’t beat ourselves. That will be the main goal.

“The toughest part of this game is the five inches between the ears.”

The veteran coach has also been impressed with some of his top players this season.

“Two of our juniors, Lance and Jevin they have really just gotten a lot stronger,” Moade said. “They really put in the work with the school’s weight program and they just don’t get tired either.

“I have also seen a lot of growth in Hunter and Garrett put in a lot of work in the summer.”

Princeton was scheduled to open the season Aug. 20 against Evansville Day.

New Lady Tigers coach excited for season

PRINCETON -- The Princeton Community volleyball team notched 15 wins a season ago in 28 matches but they have more reason to be excited for this upcoming season.

Michelle Nogueras takes over the Lady Tigers program after spending a few years playing and coaching professionally overseas.

The new coach inherits five seniors with varsity experience and a trio of juniors who also have varsity experience.

Nogueras mentioned the team will lean on their experience and look to build on the success from last season.

“We only lose two players from last season team who had a good season,” the first-year coach said. “But we also gain a few other players and all of them have been working hard to

make this season a good one.”

Maddie Bruce is one of the five seniors for the Lady Tigers. She will be a defensive specialist and libero.

“In addition to being a hard worker and someone who brings a lot of positivity to the team, Maddie is always talking and that is something us coaches, value,” Nogueras stated.

Mallory Smith will be a middle blocker this season.

“She brings experience and she dominates the middle blocking spot pretty well,” the Lady Tigers coach said of her senior.

Shaina Santos and Jade Christy (junior) will be setters in the Lady Tigers offense.

New Lady Trojan coaches looking toward future

OAKLAND CITY -- A former Wood Memorial youth girls basketball coach and a former Lady Trojan volleyball player team up this season to guide the Lady Trojans on the volleyball court.

Head coach Nicole Canif f coached the 2017 Lady Trojans girls basketball state champions when they were in third through seventh grades.

Caniff was also a varsity assistant volleyball coach at Castle previously before making the move to Oakland City.

Assistant coach Sydney Nurrenbern was a four-year starter for the Lady Trojan spikers which won a sectional championship her senior year before playing two seasons at Vincennes University.

Both coaches are excited to put Wood Memorial back on the map.

“Honestly I am not sure how the girls finished last season, but we are looking forward and not back,” Caniff said. “As a coaching staff, our main goal this year is to not only bring pride to the school and this sport, but to promote knowledge of the game and a positive environment for growth as individuals and as a team to use further in life.

“Opponents will see us as they saw us in the past and we will use that to our advantage this year until our presence is known.”

Sydney Lamar and Kaitlyn Jarboe are a pair of returning hitters for the Lady Trojans.

“Both are athletic and will play the middle,” Caniff said.

Despite not having the typical size of a hitter, Bristynn Graman will be an outside hitter this season.

“She’s short, but the kid can jump,” the Lady Trojans coach said.

Bree Rowe is another returning player for Wood Memorial and will be pencilled in as the libero.

Lucy Hunter was a setter on the junior varsity team a season ago, but will be in charge of running the varsity offense this season.

“We are expecting big things out of her,” Caniff said. “We are really excited with the progress she’s made jumping into the varsity position.”

Another newcomer who is expected to be a key contributor to the varsity this season is Lucy Schwomeyer.

The freshman will be playing on the

right side this season despite playing on the inside as a middle in the younger ranks of the program.

“We are moving her because of her strength as a blocker facing the opponent’s outside hitter,” Caniff said.

Laney Robbins and Kiersten Bottoms are a pair of “reactive diggers with quick reflexes.”

Sophomore Aubree Speicher will be a power outside hitter for the Lady Trojans, according to the coaches.

“Both Aubree and Kaitlyn quick hitters that blockers will find difficult to block at the same time,” Caniff stated.

Juniors Emma Robling and Novalee Goodall are two players who can “basically play any position for us besides setter,” Caniff said.

The Lady Trojans coaches mentioned one big key to their success this season is the team playing with confidence.

“The girls need to step onto the court every game thinking they will come out victorious.”

Rounding out the Lady Tigers group of seniors is Mackenzie Linson who will be another defensive specialist on the team.

Reaghan Page is one of the talented juniors on the team and is one of the Lady Tigers team captains.

“She brings a lot of experience to the court and she is one of our most developed players,” the Lady Tigers coach said of her team captain.

The third junior with returning experience is Skylar Gasaway.

“She will be playing on the right side and is a very strong hitter,” Nogueras noted. “She will also be able to help us a lot on the defensive aspect of the game as she is a very good blocker.”

Sophomore’s Maddon Williams and Cortney Dove are two younger players who will be expected to contribute significant minutes at the net for the Lady Tigers.
