Tigers primed for breakout season Princeton Community High School baseball team seems to be just where they want to be. The Tigers recently won the PCHS Wood Bats Invitational after holding North Daviess and Pike Central to a combined three runs on the day and aim to continue their winning ways deep into the postseason. Without ace pitcher David Ellis, a University of Evansville signee who missed time due to a back injury, the Tigers have continued to soldier on with senior Lane Rumple picking up the slack. “It’s different than most years because a lot of guys know the expectations and know their roles,” said coach Jesse Simmons. “A lot of guys are coming into the season knowing I play here or I’m going to do this. It’s about fine-tuning those skills. In other years, we’re teaching them the system and this year we’re just jumping right into it. It’s nice.” The Tigers graduated only two seniors from their 2015 roster, which Simmons said made preparing for the upcoming season much easier and his seniors have done well at taking on a mentor role for his underclassmen so not to leave the cupboard bare when they graduate in May. Despite being excited to see what his nine seniors will do this season, Simmons said he is equally excited to see how his underclassmen

I can see him competing for a starting infield spot,” Simmons said. “Trevor Boyles started quite a bit as a freshman last year and he’ll be competing for a starting spot. Heath Rumple is a sophomore and he’ll be working his way in there. Austin Schafer is a sophomore, who is a left-handed pitcher and I can see him eating up some varsity innings this year.” Simmons said the Tigers have high expectations this season, which were fueled by

the American Legion Post 25 team that was narrowly defeated by eventual state champion Jenkins Post 245 (Rockport) in the regional championship series. Simmons believes that big-game atmosphere prepared his players, upperclassmen as well as underclassmen, for the high-pressure atmosphere they will face in May during the Jasper Sectional. “Competing at that level opened their eyes and made them think, I can compete here. I’m alright,” Simmons said. “... We don’t look to put a number of wins up. We just want to compete everyday and finish near the top of our conference.”

Gibson Southern no stranger to adversity Although far from calling it a rebuilding year, Gibson Southern coach Chris May knows his team will have a few challenges ahead of them. Those challenges mostly surround the Titans’ pitching, but when their pitchers are on, they are an extremely difficult team to beat. The Titans’ first two losses came during the Lincoln Baseball Tournament earlier this season, but the Titans competed in the tournament before having an exhibition. During the loss, the Titans struggled at pitching, but have since rebounded. The Titans recently showed their potential after smacking local rival Mount Carmel with a 10-1 victory, which was mostly due to a stunning, near complete game performance by senior pitcher Peyton Garrison. “We’re happy with what we’ve got. Pitching is always a concern,” May said. “I know with the inner squad scrimmages that we have had kids go out there and they struggle to throw strikes. I told them, ‘if you can go out there and let them hit the ball to our defense, then we will be a lot better than you throwing balls.’ “We’ve got to throw strikes and get the ball across the plate and not get ourselves in

We can give up two or three walks and then let someone hit a bomb or somebody make an error behind them and then we’re in the hole before we know it. We are stressing to our pitchers to just throw strikes.” The Titans’ early woes have come by defeats in either the final inning or extra innings to the larger schools Evansville Harrison and Evansville Central.

Although disappointed with the loss, May believes it was good for his team to experience high-pressure situations early in the season. “It will pay dividends down the road,” May said. “... We have some kids that are swinging the bat, we just have not put them all together.” One player that is hitting is senior first baseman Nick Sellers, who has made an immediate impact despite

taking off 2015 to concentrate on the upcoming football season. Sellers is not the only player May is excited about. “We’re pretty solid with our starting group,” May said. “Abe Kiessel, who is a senior, has been pretty solid behind the plate. It will probably be between him and Carson. Dyllin Bennett is another big kid who I might put in at designated hitter. He’s a

backup first baseman but he does have some power, he is a big boy and if he hits it he will help us there. Peyton Garrison is another third baseman who pitches some so we will work him in that way. Justin Brown is another junior who is another backup infielder who could also play some outfield for us.”

Wood Memorial will grow with experience

The Wood Memorial baseball team will be looking to grow. Head coach Steve Kilian says his team will need more field time in order to get better. Currently the team is 1-0 losing a tough outing to a good Gibson Southern team. “We had to move a couple of games to later in the season, due to our boys basket ball team making it through sectionals,” said Kilian. “We really just need time on the field. There are things you can’t simulate in practice, like throwing curveball after curveball in batting practice,” said Kilian. The Trojans are led by their four seniors, Matt Reising, Collin Robinson, Jacob Jarboe and Jared Cox. Although the team is just getting started, Kilian says the team will become competitive s over time. “Our first game was against a pretty good Gibson Southern team,” said Killian. “But, I feel as we gain field experience we will be competitive and work towards sectionals.”

Lady Tigers focus on late season tournament run The Princeton Community High School softball team has had a decent start to the season, currently 5-3. However, Head Coach Brian Modafari thinks it should be one more win. “I feel like we may have given one game away,” he said. PCHS will use a host of players to contribute to their ultimate success this year, but Modafari will be relying on a few key players to lead the charge. “Although we expect several players to contribute this season we are cur-

rently being led on offense by seniors Caitlin Huff and Jaelyn Dunn, along with sophomore Tori Matthews. Doing the bulk of the pitching this year is sophomore Kaci Goforth,” said Modafari. “As expected, all of the girls have been working hard and continue to improve. I would say our biggest goal is to improve from game to game and to be playing our best softball going into the post season.”

Titan softball cautiously optimistic for season GSHS softball head coach Gary May said his team is doing well, despite some early challenges, enroute to a 5-3 record. “Considering our number one pitcher, Jamie Nurrenbern has only thrown 6 innings in our first 8 games and our senior catcher Taylor Rogers has had to move from catcher to first because of a back injury, we still have won five

games against good competition, said May. “I feel we have done well. We are currently 5-3.” He added, “I am cautiously optimistic. If we get everyone back, stay healthy and everyone continues to get better we can potentially be very good.”

Promising season ahead Although the Wood Memorial girls softball season hasn’t started the way they had hoped, head coach Amy Day thinks they can rebound with time. “The season has not started out as well as we had hoped. We are 0-3,” said Day. “In our first game against Princeton, we played well and led until the 6th inning when our pitcher Haley Settle complained of problems with her wrist,” Day said. Wood continued to struggle in their next two games, as Day explains. “In our next two games, our performance was not as smooth. We made mental errors in the field and the majority of the team couldn’t put the ball in play. We lost to Tecumseh 13-0 and to North 12-2.” Day says the key to any good sofball team is the pitcher, and her team is no exception. They rely on two mainstays to carry the load, one whose playing career will move on to the college level next year. “As on any team, a key player is your pitcher,” Said Day. “We have senior Haley Settle and

sophomore Kenzie Tooley taking turns at that spot. Haley will join 2015 grad Michaela Beach at Frontier College next year on scholarship.” But, Day also knows it takes runs to win any game, so she leans on a pair of juniors for that effort. “Leading our team at the plate so far are junior shortstop Sydney Day and junior centerfielder Brenna Maikranz, Day said. “Brenna went 4-4 in our game against Princeton. Sydney has gotten a hit in every game, including a triple against a good North team. Freshman Gretchen Reel looks promising after her hit against Princeton and double against Tecumseh.” Day says that her team is good enough to bounce back from the rough start. She is looking forward to getting the early bugs out and seeing her team play up to their potential. “Even after a rough start, we are looking forward to a promising season. We are hoping that we will settle in and start playing to our abilities,” said Day.

GSHS track looks to win The GSHS track throwing squad is being led by a couple of seniors on the boys side this season, according to coach Ron Kahle. “Jacob Sparks and Dustin Clem will be setting the tone for our throwers this season. Along with these two we have a couple of returning sophomore throwers on the boys side who will play a key role for us as well. They are Devin Mills and Zach Nurrenbern. Along with them we have four freshmen newcomers to the group as well. They are Joseph Stinson, Brenden Bittner, Sebastian Venson, and Damen Clem.” On the girls side, GSHS graduated two of the best throwers in Southwest Indiana last year in MacKayla Jordan and Alyssa Bright. However, Kahle has set his sights on his younger athletes. “We are expecting great things from the crew we have back this year. Sophomore Jesika Mahoney and Freshman Maria Hillyard are leading the way this season in both shot and discus. We are also expecting success from our two senior throwers in Emily Scott and Jenna Ottman.” Following along with them to help this year will be juniors Lauren Ziliak, Morgan Reeder, and Emma Williams, sophomore Paije Raley, and freshman Hailey Cummins,” siad Kahle Away from the throwing events, coach Jeremy Aydt says his squads are off to a good start but he is waiting on better weather to really see how his team can perform. Wood Memorial Boys track has success in early season meets The Wood Memorial boys track and field team has had a fairly good start to the early season. They have finished second at both of the triangular meets they attended, along with a sixth place finish at the Gourley meet in Princeton. “Not a bad start considering our numbers,” said head coach Caleb Cherry. With a small team, Cherry says most of his athletes are competing in four events at every track meet. This is especially tough when you consider the logistics of some events over-

lapping others. “We may be small, but we do have two key athletes from last year in Torry Brown and Jake Price. We look to them to be the leaders this year,” Cherry said. Small may be the word for this team, but their hearts are big, and Cherry feels pretty positive about the number of his boys advancing past sectionals. “That’s our goal,” said Cherry, “to get as many of these athletes past the sectional meet. I think we have a good shot at doing just that.”

Young Tiger team looks to improve Although the Lady Tiger track team is only 15 strong, Coach Debbie Ridgely is still optimistic about the season. “The girls come to practice every day and give me amazing effort,” said Ridgely. This year’s squad consists of one senior, two freshmen, and the rest of the squad being sophomores and juniors. The team has had success this year with a win against South Knox. Ridgely said the record doesn’t necessarily show the effort being put forth. “We are 1-5 this season, but the young ladies are improving daily,” said Ridgely. see Lady Tiger Track page 24

Seniors lead WMHS Kevin Menke is in his first year at the helm of the WMHS girls track team, and already likes what he sees. “I really like this group of girls.,” he said. “They have tremendous work ethic and I believe many will have great success this year.” Menke says his two seniors, Kenzie Avers and Jordan Blemker are sure to have a good year. “Kenzie will run the 800 and all the other relays. She has a work ethic that never stops. She has dropped her 800 time by five seconds each meet this year,” Menke said. “I am really excited to see Kenzie’s hard work pay off this year.” Menke has equal praise for Blemker. “Jordan is our lone shot putter and discus thrower. She also runs the 3200 for us and has improved significantly since the start of the year. Jordan is a strong thrower,” he said. But, as Menke points out, he also has some underclassmen that are going to do well. “Two juniors that have had a great start to the year are Chloe Bartley (400, High Jump, 4x400, and 4x100) and Ashlyn Morgan (100, 200, long jump, and 4x100),” Menke said.” “Both are building on great seasons from last year and are looking to improve in all their events.” So far in the early season, Menk has seen his squad improve at each outing — something he looks to continue as the season progresses.

Tigers continue improvement The Princeton Tiger boys golf team is off to a good start winning both their dual meets this season, and finished 10th out of 19 teams at the Vincennes Invitational . Coach Ben Kahle says his team is seeing some good progress. “We’re having some moderate success so far this season, but we still have a lot of room for improvement individually, and as a team. “We really don’t have a stand-out leader or key player on the team this year. Any of our top seven players can lead us on a given night, as they are all very tightly bunched in terms of scoring average, Said Kahle. “For us to accomplish the team goal of advancing out

of the sectional tournament, we will need all of these guys to continue to compete with each other and improve as a result. Kahle also says that the Tigers will need to lower their scores if they plan on making their goal. “We are currently in the more difficult part of the season, so the start we have had is very encouraging. As the season goes on, I would expect our players to gradually lower their scores, and hopefully hit our stride in late May in time for the sectional. If we improve as much this year as we did over the course of last season, we will be in a position to reach our goal of advancing out of the sectional.

Titan golfers off to fast start

If cold weather and wind is supposed to be a problem for golfers, no one told the Gibson Southern team. The team is off to a fantastic start, going 5-0. Getting off to a quick start has been fueled by key players throughout the roster. “We look to key players Nick Virden (1), Calab Ziliak (2), Jacob Murphy (3), Mason Stoll (4), Jacob Gritton and Dylan Stefanich (5) and (6), to be consistent.” said head coach Lynn Carpenter. Although the Titans are off to a great start, Carpenter has the team’s goals set for more success. “Our goal is to win the PAC , win our sectional, and win the county championship for the fourth year in a row.”

Moade looks forward to the challenge Princeton Community High School girls tennis team coach Matt Moade said he looks forward to the challenge of a season full of newer players. Moade believes it’s gratifying to craft an athlete into a tennis player, which is why he does not mind taking on a squad of players relatively new to the sport. “The wins and losses will take care of themselves,” Moade said. “It’s about our work ethic and how coachable we are, and right now we are working hard and we are very coachable. We just have zero experience. We have girls working hard and I am getting what I need to get out of them right now.” Moade is confident that his team will slowly build momentum as the sectional tournament nears.

WMHS tennis squad aims to improve record Mother Nature hasn’t been kind to any of the sporting teams this spring, but it has been particularly tough on tennis. Coach Dan Bolin’s WMHS tennis squad has only finished two matches thus far this spring. However, even the weather hasn’t put a damper on their spirit. “Due to the weather, we have only finished two matches, but the girls are improving with each match, said Bolin. Bolin, whose squad recently won a conference matchup with Washington Catholic, says he has four players he is looking to

carry a lot of the weight. “I expect Katie Thacker, Cori Pflug, Katie Howard and Kennedy Wilkerson to be our main focus,” he said. “I think Taylor Andis and Cassidy Saulman will continue to improve and become a major part of the team.” With a large part of the season still in front of them, Bolin is looking for the team to make consistent progress. “I expect the girls to continue to improve. I feel we will end the season with a better record than last year and I think that by sectional time we may be a contender,” said Bolin.

GSHS tennis squad eyes regional The Gibson Southern Lady Titans tennis team’s season is going good so far, according to head coach Kyle DeBord. “We were able to get off to a 2-0 record in the PAC with wins over Tell City and Heritage Hills. Then we also got a win against state ranked Castle. So we are currently 3-0,” said DeBord. Acccording to Debord, the team has some depth in seven key players. However, “It will take all of them working together for us to accomplish our goals this season.” Those goals include making the team better each day, along with a run at a regional title. Something DeBord says will come with daily hard work and fewer mistakes. “If we can continue to focus on making ourselves better each day, and we start to make fewer mistakes, then we can make a run at the regional title,” said DeBord.

“We are seeing good growth as many of them are setting personal records every meet.’ “Freshman Avery Jones is a welcome addition to the Lady Tiger team,” says Ridgely. “She just stepped in and is dominating the 400-meter run, as well as continually placing in the 200-meter dash. Despite the small numbers, Ridgley knows that with the hard work, they are on their way to being the best they can be going into the conference and tournament series.

Handling the long and high jumping duties are Chase Wilson, Luke Dunn, Stephan Wilkerson and Alex Doan. Throwing shot and discus falls to Zac Dove, Kobe James and Devonte Hardiman. Niederhaus says, “We expect to compete for county, conference, and sectional titles. We look to improve on our fifth place at regional last year and have many people qualify for state.”
