Titans hope to be in state championship conversation once again LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

The Gibson Southern High School football team dominated their season opener and hope to continue that tread throughout the season. In the 56-0 route of Forest Park on the road, junior quarterback Isaac Sellers took over for his graduated borther Nick and rushed for two touchdowns. Running back Dylan Stefanich rushed for three touchdowns in the first game of the season, leaving head coach Nick Hart extremely proud. “I’m very proud of how our guys played. Our effort was phenomenal, our execution was good at times, and our offensive line did a good job of opening holes,” Coach Nick Hart said after his fiveyear career record rose to 48-7 with his fifth straight seasonopening win. “Forest Park was bringing guys off the edge, but our linemen started picking them up.” A great offensive line will give Stefanich plenty of opportunities to break out this year and with Sellers showing that he is a threat with both his legs and his arm, the Titans offense is something to look out for. If the offense can keep up the pace that they have set for themselves early on, they could find themselves in teh same situation as last year,

Schenk looks to diverse and balanced offense for 2016 campaign

The Princeton Community High School football team has an interesting offensie heading into the 2016 campaign. Head coach Waylon Schenk sees two deserving players who can thrive at the quarterback position to create different

offensive scenarios every snap. Senior Brogan Reneer and junior Maleek Hardiman will alternate time during games at the quarterback position. When one is playing quarterback, the other will be lined up at receiver. “They’ll both rotate from receiver throughout the night,” said Schenk prior to their cancelled season opener against

Wood Memorial on Aug. 19. “They’ll probably split the snaps fifty-fifty. I think they’ve both earned the opportunity and they are both good receivers.” Also a star on the offensive side of the ball will be JaVon Wilkerson. Wilkerson missed the end of the track and field season in the spring, including a possible trip to the st ate meet, while

away at Fort Leonard Wood as an Army National Guard enlistee. “JaVon is a game breaker,” Schenk said. “He’s a kid that can really hurt you in the pass and we’ve built run schemes that will utilise his skill set.” Schenk is happy with where his offense is at compared to last year. This year, “we were

balanced on offense,” Schenk said following a preseason scrimmage with Tecumseh, “that’s what we were going for. I feel like we have four or five options in the run game. We made some plays down field with the passing game. Last year I felt we were predictable on offense, but this year I feel like we are a lot more balanced.

Trojans look to seniors for a much-needed bounceback season LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

A group of eight seniors will lead the Wood Memorial High School Trojans football team in 2016 in hopes of a big season for the program. Brock Carter, Bob Huot, Austin Powell, Juston Jones, Tristan Riley, Seth Sales, Corbin Richeson, and Jon Bichler wili lead a 28- man roster with 10 freshman, five sophomores and five juniors during the 2016 campaign. “Brock Carter will be our starting quarterback,” said head coach Caleb Cherry. “He’s a senior that started our sectional game last year. He’s been quarterback No. 1 the whole summer. We’re just telling him a formation or a play and he’s running the rest of it on his own. He’s a super tough kid and we’re going to run a bit of an option and stuff. He’ll earn every yard that he has to. He shows the team that he isn’t afraid to take charge and that’s awesome.” In 2015, the Trojans failed to win a game, going 0-10 including 0-4 in conference and a 49-14 loss to Perry Central in their lone sectional game. “Honestly, I’m pretty excited,” said head coach Caleb Cherry prior to the season. “We get to

It’s the first year that I can say that size won’t be an issue. We feel more positive and excited than we have in the past few years. This is the crew that we’ve been working on since we’ve started.

These seniors were sophomores and I coached them at 7th and 8th grade. We know these kids and they’re hard workers. We’re ready to get started.” The team struggled in a preseason scrimmage against the Pike Central High School Char-

gers and couldn’t quite seem to get their offense going. But Cherry was still happy with what he saw. “We’re missing blocks and other stuff that can be fixed in a week or two. With a good week of practice, we should be good to go.

GREAT SELECTION!

After going 10-11 in 2015, along with a 2-1 conference record, a sectional championship and a first-round regional exit, the Wood Memorial High School Trojans volleyball team hopes to have a more successful season in 2016. Although the first two games didn’t go as planned, in which the Trojans lost 3-1 to both Northeast Dubois and Mt. Vernon to kick off their season, head coach Whitney Powers thinks it is still early for her squad. “I wasn’t disappointed, but I definitely wasn’t pleased,” Powers said following the 3-1 loss to Mt. Vernon. “It was lack of effort and energy. We struggled with that and didn’t seem motivated to be playing. We did have

It’s the second match of the season, though. We aren’t going to be where we want to be and that’s why we are going to come hard in practice tomorrow.” Five seniors make up half of the varsity roster with returning players Chloe Bartley, Carsen Robinson, Lexuss Ellerbrook, Katie Thacker and Taylor Pflug as the leaders on the squad. The varsity team also has three juniors, Cori Pflug, Lexi Lashbrook and Kenzie Tolley and two sophomores in Hannah Thacker and Bailee Speicher. The Trojans are messing around with lineups early in the season hoping to find a group that clicks. “Unfortunately we missed a lot of serves tonight,” Powers said following the Mt. Vernon

around with lineups early this year, we’re going to have those. We’re going to be adjusting here, but I have no doubt that we’ll find our click here and we’ll get it together.” The Trojans will have a rematch against Loogootee, the team that knocked them out of regionals, 3-1, on Oct. 3 at Wood Memroial High School and will face Gibson County foes Gibson Southern at home on Sept. 13 and Princeton Community on the road on Sept. 22. The Trojans have plenty of experience on the roster and Powers is excited with the team she has the success that they can bring this season. “They’re a solid team,” Powers said. “The girls know that it’s not going to be easy. My girls don’t like to lose and they’re on fire and they’re ready.”

The Gibson Southern High School Titans volleyball team is hoping for a rebound season in their 2016 campaign. In 2015, the Titans finished with a 4-21 record that included 1-7 in conference, and a 1-11 record at home. “The girls are a hard working and very coach-able bunch,” said head coach Amy Norris. “We are looking forward for the season.” The Titans will have to compete with a key player from 2015 in Whitney Norris, who will spend the entire season recovering from a back injury. The Titans will also need to find a way to replace Jackie Goedde, a setter. “Last season she played all around in the setting position and also

middle in the front row,” Norris said of her sophomore. “Everyone is going to have to step up and do their part.” The team will return seniors Kylie Moskos, Kate Ziliak, Lauren Ziliak and sophomore Shealyn Riggs. To fill those roles, Norris will look to four underclassman on the 9-player roster with sophomores Kaleigh Johnson, Riggs, Whitney Norris and freshman Megan Niehaus. The upperclassman include the trio of seniors and juniors Samantha Purcell and Allison McClain. The Tigers will play eight games at GSHS on their 24 game schedule including games against Washington High School, Jasper High School and Evansville Mater Dei. “We are going to just take one game at a time, compete to the best of our ability and learn and improve with every match,” Norris said.

New head coach Hayden hopes to lead Tigers volleyball to promise land LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

The Princeton Community High School Tigers volleyball team has a new head coach, but not one that they haven’t met before. Ryan Hayden steps in to fill the role as the new varsity head coach after Emily Schmitt resigned to spend more time with her family. Hayden, formerly the Tigers’ JV coach, thinks that they will be just as competitive this year as they have in recent seasons. “We should be a competitive team as long as we have good ball control, serve well, and continue to improve transitioning from base to defense,” said Hayden, “We are hoping to compete for a sectional title this year.” Erin Fortner, Hannah

Brewer, Jaelyn Dunn and Sam Hyneman all graduated last season, leaving some major holes to fill for the 2016 squad. Fornter, who plays with Thomas More College as a setter, Brewer and Dunn all set single season records for the Tigers last year in assists, kills and digs respectively. “We are not going to be able to replace their accomplishments with individual players,” Hayden said. “We will have to replace them with a team effort. We will replace Hannah’s kills from last year by spreading the sets around and asking out outside hitters, Kennedy Hardiman and Kiare Young, to get more kills this year.” Returning senior Brooke James “is going to have a big senior year,” Hayden said about the 5-foot-11 middle

Hayden also added some youth to the roster, bringing up Kylee Hale and Clark from the 2015 JV team and will be bringing in Mallory Smith to play varsity as a freshman. The Tigers started off their season right, earning Hayden his first win as a varsity coach in the teams

first attempt with a 3-0 win over Evansville Reitz on Aug. 15 at Tiger Arena. James led the way for the team with 19 kills in 31 attempts while also recorded a pair of blocks, three assists, four digs and a pair of aces. Easton Chandler thrived in the setter role, recording 26 assists in the victory. Last season, the Tigers finished with a 29-3 record, with two of those losses coming from conference rival Jasper including a 3-1 loss in the sectional finals. “We are looking forward to playing Jasper,” Hayden said. “Jasper is a sectional and conference opponent and they have a successful volleyball program.”

Titans graduate seven key players, look to youth for 2016 Lucas Whitten/Daily Clarion

LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

A large sophomore class is likely to lead the 2016 Gibson Southern High School boys soccer team after losing seven key players in between seasons. The Titans are led by new head coach Bob Drennan and he’s interested to see how his style works with the Titans. “I’m very excited for the upcoming season,” Drennan said. “Since this is my first year as head coach, I am interested to see if my processes and playing style translate into growth and success for our players. We have a great group to work with a great attitude.” His great group doesn’t come without loss though. The team lost Mason Mockobee, Ian Defelice, Caleb Kifer, Zach Drennan and Elijah Kramer due to graduation, while also losing Saxon Watkins who

moved. Defelice was the main source of scoring for the titans, racking up 17 total goals. Mockobee was second on the team with 8 goals and seven assists and Kifer led the team in assists with 10. The three graduated seniors were the top three pointsgetters for the Titans as well. “We lost a lot from last year,” Drennan said. “With Mockobee, DeFelice, Kifer, Drennan, Kramer, and Hall graduating and Saxon Watkins leaving the area, we lost most of our scoring and assist from last year. Fortunately, we have players ready to step into those roles. We have a large sophomore class with more talent than I can put on the field at one time. Combined with returning upper classmen starters like Blake Tenbarge, Tait Tenbarge, Trey Riggs, Austin Dewig and Jacob Murphy, we have the talent to absorb those losses.”

Blake Tenbarge scored three goals and two assists in 2015, Riggs scored once and Dewig scored once. The Titans will look to 10 sophomores, Mitchell Priar, Garrett Barthel, Preston Risinger, Jaden Fleetwood, Alex Meyer, Brendon Murphy, Josh Pohl, Josh Kramer, Eli Kifer, Avery Gick and Bryce Williams, as their biggest chunk of the roster. The Titans kicked off 2016 with a 1-1 record and an early conference victory over South Spencer, 1-0 in their first match of the year with a goal scored by Trey Riggs and a shutout in goal by Priar. Following a season that ended in the first game of the sectional tournament to rival Evansville Mater Dei, Drennan is ready to go. I am just so very exited,” Drennan said. “I have a great group of players, a great facility, a great fan base and a great school.

With a 2-13 record (0-5 in conference) in 2015, the Princeton Community High School boys soccer team didn’t quite perform to expectations. The Tigers worked with a 1-6 record when playing at home, 1-1 when playing on neutral territory and failing to record a win, 0-6, when playing on the road. The team had some success when it came to the post season, earning a 1-0 win over Evansville Day in their first game of sectionals before losing 3-1 to North Posey. The 15-man roster will be led by five seniors, Zack Ledford, Nathan Sandusky, Jaiden Scott, Austin Stackhouse and Noah Youngson. Two juniors are on the squad in

Luke Dunn and Caleb Huff. Brantley Muckerheide is the lone sophomore with seven freshman joining the club. Kameron Byers, Braden Matthews, Caleb Merrifield, Licson Regis, Jalen Stewart, Oscar Villalobos and Henry Wilhite are the seven freshman. Head coach Brad Woods will lead the 2016 team through a 16 game schedule that features nine road games, a spot the team had trouble with last season. Road games include matchups with Mater Dei High School, Pike Central High School, Gibson Southern and Vincennes Lincoln. The Tigers opened up their season with a tough, 12-0 loss to Washington on the road, moving the team to 0-1 in their overall and conference records.

Last season the Wood Memorial High School Trojans boys soccer team finished with a 2-93 record that included a winless 0-3-2 conference record. But this season, head coach Josh Stolz thinks he has a group of seniors that can lead them to a successful 2016 campaign. “We’re excited and hopeful,” Stolz said. “We’ve got a good group of seniors that have played for a long time and they’re a great group. They work together and hopefully they can put something together that they can be proud of their senior season.” With seven seniors on the 22 man roster, the team will look to their three captains, Caleb Head and twin brothers Specner and Tristan Vickers, for leadership and guidance throughout the season. “Caleb Head will need to be very involved and controlling,” Stolz said. “He’s going to play in the midfield role so he has to be heavily involved and a lot of the season is going to ride on the Vickers twins. One is a leader on defense, the other is a

leader on offense. We look to the captains to lead us by example on and off the field to get ready for the games.” Also filling a crucial role will be goalkeeper Jake Price and his backup Noah Casey. “Our keeper has a lot on him,” said Stolz. “If a team has a standout goalkeeper, the team will be excellent. We’re fortunate that we have Price and a good backup in Casey. They do great in games and we’re very happy that we are set in that position. We think Jake is really going to help us and this is his third year to play there. He’s been a very good varsity keeper. After losing three seniors in between seasons, the team added four freshman in Travis Bottoms, Carson Johnson, Josh Stephens and Justin Strickland. “We lost three seniors and we picked up four freshman,” Stolz said. “Of course they aren’t going to fill those shoes. Everybody steps up. Losing only three isn’t a lot, so fortunately we don’t have a lot of holes to fill. I think we’ll be just as strong as last year if not better.”

Titans hopeful for a ‘very successful’ soccer season LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

The Gibson Southern High School Lady Titans soccer team is looking to continue the success that they had last season. In 2015, the Lady Titans worked their way to a 14-3-1 record while going a perfect 5-0 in conference play. The Titans held a 5-1-1 record at home, an 8-1 record when playing on the road and a 1-1 record on neutral fields. Unfortunately for the Titans, the successful season ended early after a 1-1 loss to the North Posey Vikings after a 5-4 shootout in the second round of the sectional tournament. Head coach Emily Kavanagh is hoping for another successful season. “We’re hopeful for a very successful soccer season,” Kavanagh said. “Our biggest challenge will be finishing and moving well on the field given new positioning and defensive line.” The Titans graduated Morgan Reed who s cored 13 of the Titans’ 68 goals in 2015. Reed also recorded eight assists in 18 games played. “We graduated two seniors,” Kavanagh said, “one being a starting midfield and top goal scorer Morgan Reed, but we have 10 returning starters as

Back row, from left: assistant coach Wyatt Schmitt, Sohpie Toth, Elizabeth Nichols, Grace Bammer, Amy Niehaus, Abigail Goings, Mallory Reynolds, Grace well as other players who have stepped up to fill these positions.” Included in the group of returning players is the Amy Niehaus, the Titans’ leading scorer from last season with 15 goals in 17 games played. The senior will continue in the forward position in 2016. Also returning to the team is Skylar Boes, a junior

midfielder that scored nine goals and eight assists for the Titans in her sophomore season. Last season’s starting goaltender Sophie Toth will also be returning after playing 18 games in net for 1,440 minutes while only allowing eight goals for a 0.8 goals against average and recording 10 shutouts for a 14-3-1 record.

The Titans kicked off the 2016 campaign shutout win on Aug. 15 against South Spencer. “We started our regular season strong tonight with a 5-0 win against South Spencer,” Kavanagh said. “A lot of players got a lot of playing time and experience on the field.” The Titans are excited as the season rolls on and are keeping an eye on the teams

date with Terre Haute North on Sept. 27 “because the competition and intensity levels are so high,” Kavanagh said. “We have a lot of talent and depth on our team this year. The girls are well-conditioned and ready for the season ahead. We just have to keep working hard and playing our best no matter the opponent,” Kavanagh added.

Trojan girls look for fourth straight conference title LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

Last season, the Wood Memorial High School Lady Trojans worked their way to their third straight Blue Chip Conference title. Head coach Dan Gomez will lead the Trojans once again in hopes that a squad made up of 13 seniors can lead the 17-woman roster to their fourth straight conference title. “I think we’re in for a really good season,” Gomez said. “We’re a senior heavy team this year and the seniors will look for their fourth straight Blue Chip title this season.”

Sydney Day, Kim Ellerman, Katelynn Englehardt, Kylie Head, Kalyn Ingle, Josi Lipscomb, Morgan Loveless, Brenna Maikranz, Kendal Maikranz, Cassidy McIntosh, Ashlyn Morgan, Cassidy Saulmon and Makayla Stocker will lead one junior, Jenna McGowan, one sophomore Lily Froemming and a pair of reshman Avery Tepe and Breanna Welborn. “As far as replacements, a lot of the girls this year were starters last year, so not much to replace,” Gomez said. “We have to replace a goalie, but Kim Ellerman will do a good job at that position. “We’re looking for good things out of Brenna

Maikranz, She had multiple hat tricks in 2015 before she broke her toe and was out. Ashlyn Morgan will be to the outside. She’s got speed, so if she needs to go in or out she can.” The Trojans schedule is made up of 16 games, with an even eight at home and eight on the road. Included in the road schedule are matches against Gibson County rivals Gibson Southern and Princeton Community. The Trojans lost to Gibson Southern 4-0 in the regular season and with a 6-0 loss in sectionals. The Tigers and Trojans lone match in 2015 ended up in a 1-1 tie at Wood Memorial High School.

Last season, the Princeton Community High School Lady Tigers soccer team had a hard time finding momentum. The team kicked things off with a five game losing streak before finishing the season with a 3-121 overall record. whilg going 1-4 in conference and failing to capture a win on the road. Despite the rough season, head coach David Dixon is excited to see his team take the field in 2016. “I’m optimistic for our team and future development,” Dixon said. “I’m looking forward to them

playing together as a team and becoming a unit.” The team will be returning their leading goal scorer from last season, Tori Matthews, who in 16 games played recorded 11 goals and eight assists (a team-high) for 30 points. Matthews’ 11 goals were just under half of the teams 25 total, an average of just 1.6 goals per match. Seniors Emma Heldt, Nyco Louis and Nikki Slayton will also be returning to the team for the 2016 campaign, a group that made up 10 of the teams’ goals last season with one, four and five respectively. Russell also recorded

seven assists were second best on the team. The Tigers add six freshman to the squad in Jesse Goforth, Casey Minkler, Brooke Moody, Hadley Sheffer, Tabitha Wideman and Kira Wolf. “We have a few new defensive players who are very promising,” Dixon said, “and we think they’ll work great with our other players.” Regardless of the outcome of the season, Dixon will cherish his time coaching the Tigers squad. “I’m blessed to have this opportunity to coach this great group of girls, and I believe they all have a bright future in this sport!”

In 2015, the Princeton Community Tigers boys tennis team worked their way to a sectional championship after a 5-0 defeat of Heritage Hills. Unfortunately, the Tigers were eliminated in the first round of regionals, falling to Evansville North 5-0. In 2016, Tigers head coach Matt Moade has a 2016 roster that varies by age.

There are two seniors on the squad, Ethan Flaningam and Seth Robbins, three juniors in Hunter Davis, Eric Flaningam and Noah West, no sophomores and three freshman, Trent Cochran, Conner Gentry and Hunter McCandless. Assistant coach Marvin Fisher will help the 2016 team through a 19 match schedule that features some quality opponents. The Tigers will take

on Gibson County rivals Gibson Southern on the road on Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. and Wood Memorial at home on Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m. With majority of the roster as upperclassmen, the seniors will need to help the freshman learn their footing for the upcoming season when there is no senior class while also helping them along the way this season en route to backto-back sectional championships.

Trojans tennis looks to the future LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

The Wood Memorial High School Trojans boys tennis team is still very, very young. In the programs third year, head coach Dan Bolin hopes the team grows even more. “I think we’re going to be better than last year,” Bolin said about his 9-man roster that doesn’t include a senior. “They’re practices are better and they’re learning new things. Overall, we should be fifty-fifty by the end of the year. I hope to be competitive come sectional time.” The Trojans are made up of three juniors, Lathan Falls, Trent Holder and Walker Nurrenbern, and six sophomores

in Paxon Bartley, Braydon Bell, Jalen Doerner, James Gates, Cody Goodall and Isiah Norrick. Nurrenbern will take the No. 1 singles role while Bartley and Holder when man No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. The No. 1 doubles group is made up of Falls and Doerner while the number two will be Norrick and Bell while regular rotations. In their first match of the season, the Trojans fell 3-2 to North Daviess on the road, but Bolin was pleased with what he saw. “It went pretty well,” Bolin said. “It could have went either way. It came down to a 3-set match and we just came up short 5-7. I was pleased with the way they played.”

The Trojans will have one obstical to over come frequently this year, playing on the road. The tennis courts at WMHS are currently under construction to be replaced with new courts, forcing the Trojans to play without a home game all season long. While Bolin hopes to compete in 2016, he’s focused on preparing the team for next season as well, hoping the group will continue to grow in it’s short history. “We’re still a young team,” Bolin said. “I’ve got three juniors and six sophomores. I hope this year everybody enjoys themselves and next year Lucas Whitten/Daily Clarion we’ll be the team to beat Wood Memorial High School Boys Tennis. GSHS tennis looking to youth for five senior replacements

LUCAS WHITTEN Sports Editor

The Gibson Southern High School boys tennis team has a lot of holes to fill after their 2015 season. “We lost 5 seniors that all started varsity,” said head coach Terry Wallace. “That’s extremely important because there are only 7 varsity players. Our younger players are working hard to fill those shoes, as they know how significant of a loss it is to lose 7 seniors. The lack of varsity experience is a concern for Wallace, but he expects the team to get better as the season goes on. “We are fairly young and our players don’t have much varsity experience,” Wallace said, “but we expect our players to get better every match and be very competitive this year. They have been working extremely hard in practice

these past couple weeks to prepare for season. The entire GSHS boys tennis roster is made up of five juniors, Matt Arnett, Alex Kruse, Derek Lynn, Casey Nurrenbern and Sam Romershausen. There are four sophomores, Kaleb Conklin, Gavin Graper, Alex Harper and Daniel Knapp. And three freshman in Devon Bullock, Isaiah Kiesel and Jarrett Klusmeier. “The team is very even this year throughout the line-up,” Wallace said. “On any given day, anybody can beat anybody. We are working to find effective doubles teams that mesh well together. We have nine players competing for varsity spots so everyone has a possibility of making big contributions.” In a scrimmage match against Mater Dei earlier in the season, Wallace was pleased with what he saw out of his seniorless squad.

“There was no official match score, but we competed hard and feel we learned what we need to improve on to have success this year,” said Wallace. The Titans will play seven home matches on a 19 match season and include home matches against Gibson County rivals, Wood Memorial and Princeton Community. Wallace looks forward to the teams Pocket Athletic Conference matches because “conference matches usually have a little more intensity and more at stake. Winning conference is always a goal of ours.” Experience won’t matter for Wallace’s expectations though. “Although we are relatively young, inexperienced and seniorless roster, we expect our team to compete extremely hard and continually get better throughout the season.”

Titan XC fully reloaded JOHN ROARK Staff Writer

FORT BRANCH— Gibson Southern High School’s boys’ cross-country program graduated four quality seniors during the spring. However, it’s going to be a while before Titans’ coach Jeremy Aydt has to deal with losing a senior. That’s because GSHS’s roster carries nary a senior. To boot, Aydt’s squad is back-loaded with underclassmen. The Titans’ distance runners are comprised of five juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen. “We lost Aaron Cochran, Caleb Kifer, Zachary Davis, Nick Scheller and Logan Dilbeck,” Aydt said. “All of them were great leaders that the current athletes looked up last year.” Don’t believe for a moment,

though, that the Titans’ talent cupboard is bare. For starters, Travis Hart made quite a splash as a freshman, with a 5K personal best time of 17 minutes, 14 seconds, which was the team’s secondbest effort (Cochran, 16:50). Hart was a first-team all-Pocket Athletic Conference selection. Hart’s back and ready to make more noise as a sophomore, as is classmate Adam Reed (17:42). Four of the five returning juniors — Mason Biitner, Shane Harper, John Loehr and Alec Martin—broke 20 minutes last fall, as did incoming sophomore Skylar Lay. The remainder of the returnees all broke 21 minutes — junior Dimitri Dewig and sophomores Jackson Maurer and Hunter Topper. The freshman class consists of Colten Bindner, Austin

62 of the 104 teams they competed against. Aydt anticipates more of the same this fall from his group of boys’ runners. “The kids have worked hard during

the summer,” Aydt said. “They logged more miles than they have in the past.” For Aydt and GSHS, the faces and names may come and go, yet the expectations aren’t

tweaked. “The team has set goals of challenging for a PAC and Sectional championship, while advancing to regional and semi-state,” the coach said.

PCHS boys’ XC ready for next step JOHN ROARK Staff Writer

This much can be said about Princeton Community High School’s boys’ cross-country team: It apparently isn’t shaken by triskaidekaphobia—that is, the fear of the number 13. After his team wound up placing 13th in last year’s Semi-State team standing, Tigers’ head coach Bill Niederhaus says his team is ready to surpass that finish in 2016. “We have high expectations wanting to improve on our 13th place finish at Semi-State last year,” Niederhaus said. “We have 12 practice meets to get ready for the one shot we have to improve when we get

to Semi-State.” Yes, this year’s Semi-State serves as PCHS’s 13th meet on the slate. Again, no fear—at least there shouldn’t be, what with Princeton’s stable of returnees. Niederhaus did take a moment to remember his graduated runners. “The runners we lost were Phil Dzienciol, Nathan Sailer, Roman Wagner and Hunter Stokes,” the Tigers’ coach said. “We are replacing them by working hard to make ourselves better than last year. This group helped us to get a mindset to be better this year.” Princeton’s varsity returnees are senior Desi Walker,

Lady Titan harriers have youth JOHN ROARK Staff Writer

FORT BRANCH— Though the Gibson Southern High School girls’ crosscountry squad doesn’t list as many runners as its boys’ counterpart, the Lady Titans are hardly lacking in ability. That’s because two of the team’s scorers are back, including last year’s No. 2 runner, sophomore-to-be Abbye Huelsman, Huelsman’s top time of 20 minutes, 42 seconds was bested by only Kylie Hasenour (19:58), who’s taken her talents to the University of Evansville. “We lost Masie Lay, Lexi Lay, Kylie Hasenour and Holly Bittner,” Aydt said. “This year’s runners will step up and fill in their shoes.” Like Hasenour, Huelsman was a first-team All-Pocket Athletic Conference choice in 2015. Her best effort was a fifth-place finish at the Hopewell Invitational. Sophomore Ellie Kiesel finished her freshman fall campaign with the team’s

fifth-best time of 21:15, recorded at the regional level. Morgan Jackson (21:55 during the regional) is also back from a strong freshman season, as is Sydney Thomas (23:02). Juniors Kennedy Stoll (23:46) and Olivia Schneider (26:32) also seek to improve GSHS’s fortunes. The balance of the roster is comprised of two sophomores (Jordyn Graham and Kristen Benkert) and a pair of freshmen (Grace Greubel and Clara Pohl). Gibson Southern’s girls finished second in the PAC championships and were runnersup in the sectional and fifth in the regional team standing. All told, the Lady Titans finished 65 and 43 versus the teams they competed against. Aydt says his club should be right back in the thick of things in 2016. “We gear our focus on the post season, PAC, sectional, and regional,” Aydt said. “We want to advance as many individuals and/or the team to Semi-State.”

Lady Tigers’ cross triples roster size for 2016 campaign JOHN ROARK Staff Writer

Can Princeton Community High School’s girls’ cross-country team find strength in numbers? Lady Tigers’ coach Debbie Ridgely, certainly hopes so. Last year, Ridgely had just two runners, well short of the required five needed for a team score. Add a little recruiting in the hallways, and suddenly Princeton has a roster of six. “We have four seniors, and two juniors,” Ridgely said. “One of my seniors, Lexus Brittingham, made it to semi-state last year. “She has her sights set on competing at state this year. “She has trained hard all summer long; I expect her to begin her season on a very positive note,” Ridgely said. Brittingham finished fifth at the South Knox Sectional, then 20th at

the Pike Central Regional before ending her season at semi-state. Brittingham’s lone teammate in 2015 —that being then-sophomore Sydney Young—ran 13th at the sectional and also advanced to the Regional. Ridgely said Young is currently nursing an injury as she enters her junior campaign. “(Young) has gotten off to a rough start,” Ridgely said. “However, with her love of the sport, plus her success last year, I see her getting into the swing of things very soon.” New to the Lady Tigers’ roster are three seniors, Jessica Mata and twins Adina and Yvline Adis; along with junior Elisabeth Glomski. Ridgely says her expanded roster is eager to get going. “The new members of the team have all been training this summer as well and are excited to begin competition,” Ridgely added.

Titan girls golf successful early

Tiger girls golf looking forward

The Gibson Southern High School Lady Titans golf team has already shown success at the start of their 2016 campaign. The team took down Gibson County rivals, the Princeton Community High School Tigers 179-231 very early in the season before coming in second in the Titan Invitational at Cambridge Golf Club in Evansville later that week with a 175. In their first triangular of the season, the Titans knocked off both Pike Central and South Spencer, winning 182-213-242 respectively. The Titans are led by their No. 1, senior Kenzie Whitten, No. 2, Julia Angermeier, senior Ellie Marshall and lone junior Lexi Hunt.

Last season, the Princeton Community High School Lady Tigers golf team finished fifth in the sectional tournament at the Country Club of Old Vincennes on Sept. 19 with a 390 score, just 11 strokes back from fourth place finisher Sullivan and 45 strokes back from winners Vincennes Rivet. This season, head coach Jenny Kolb has a lot to look forward to. And with her players giving it their all, she is excited to see them play. “I am looking forward to watching the girls improve as the season progresses,” Kolb said. “Many of our girls scored better in our last match than they have in
