In IKEA’s report, Alison Blunt, codirector of the Centre for Studies of Home at Queen Mary University of London, says there are essentially five things that matter to people when they consider the ideal home: “Comfort, security, a sense of autonomy and ownership, and the capacity for privacy. Home at its core goes back to a sense of belonging.” A survey by the home-furnishings retailer Article in 2018 asked people what it took for them to finally call a dwelling a home. Many responders said it takes a couple of holidays, barbecues, family visits, big sporting events and game nights before they really feel “at home.” So feather the proverbial nest however you like, and have fun while you do it. COUNTER INTELLIGENCE FAMILY TABLE

Rethink your kitchen layout

The trend experts at Southern Living magazine indicate that formal dining and living rooms are now used infrequently. As a result, kitchens have evolved to accommodate meal prep and dining. A large family table in the center of the room brings people into the kitchen to get more involved with food, according to San Francisco designer David Kensington.

itchens are the most popular rooms in many homes. Even though The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states the average person spends just 68 minutes each weekday consuming food, and around 37 minutes preparing meals, the kitchen is not just a spot for food. It also is a gathering place for conversation, homework and family time. In recognition that so much time is spent in this heart of the home, many people are embracing some of the more popular trends concerning kitchen layouts to maximize the comfort and efficiency of these rooms.

K

COMMUNAL ZONES

Unlike the days of yore when the kitchen was utilitarian, today’s home floor plans make kitchens a focal point of a home. Food preparation also is no longer a solitary task. Thanks to larger kitchen footprints and multiple zones set up for meal creation, a greater number of people can hang out in the kitchen and help with meals.

COUNTER CULTURE Taking a page out of a favorite corner diner or bar, kitchens are increasingly outfitted with a large island flanked by chic counter stools, according to the design pros at Domino. Family members can pull up a stool and grab a quick snack. It’s also a great place for You’ll find multiple sinks, large islands and more counter friends to engage in conversation while a host or hostspace are key components of modern kitchen layouts. ess prepares cocktails and appetizers for an evening soirée.

DINING NOOKS

Kitchen designs are bringing back banquette seating in a cozy nook. This design is a practical use of space, and can fit in large and small kitchens alike. It also can give a kitchen a high-end look, as built-in banquettes can highlight a bay window or seem custom-made for the space. Banquette seating can fit a number of people comfortably and provides a sensible and casual dining spot solution.

WORK ZONE Many families like to have an area of the kitchen set up as a tech zone where kids can do their homework and even parents can do some work, such as paying bills. Setting aside an area of counter space as a small desk area can be a great idea. Such areas also help parents keep a watchful eye on children while they’re surfing the internet.

Get ready: Early spring landscaping tips METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

uring the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of the window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes no doubt dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ these tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season. • One of the first steps is to apply a preemergent weed killer to get a head start knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. • While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”); otherwise,

D

you may waste time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped by another frosty day. • Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring

• Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water, and continue to care for the area until the spot fills in. • Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. • Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over the winter. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. • Check if the front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. • Think about any annuals you thaw can harden, making it difficult for might want to plant in the landscape plants to flourish later on. The choice for staying put or moving on METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

Many home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale” signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average

of six years before selling. Since 2010, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rock-bottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008 recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving.

When it can be smart to hire a painting pro METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

F

ew things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various paints — including finishes for particular applications — will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or floors or fail to recognize the

nuances that indicate a spot-on painting job. Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works — and what does not. Painters

often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an

eye for details. And because professional painters make a business out of doing interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project. Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, unlike novices who may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Plus, if mistakes happen, DIYers have to spend additional time and money fixing them. Safety can be a large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience. Painting can give a home a facelift, and oftentimes it is smart to turn the work over to professionals to ensure the job is done just right.

Buyers’ guide to financing a new vehicle METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

any issues well before you apply for financing so a bad score will not hurt you. • Visit lenders. The financing deal offered by the dealership might not be the best price possible. You can get preapproved/prequalified for an auto loan the same way you do for a home mortgage at banks and credit unions. This helps you secure the best interest rate possible. It also provides negotiating power. A preapproval letter puts you in the position as a stronger “cash buyer,” states the financial resource NerdWallet. • Set a firm buying price. Preapprovals and working with a third-party lender gives you a specific amount of money you know you can borrow. Use this as a tool to keep the negotiated price low because you cannot exceed your preapproved amount. It also may be a way to push dealership finance managers to contact their own captive lenders to try to beat the rate offered by your existing lender. Work is needed to secure the best price on a new car, and that work begins long before visiting a dealership.

A

nalysts at Edmunds estimate the average transaction price of a new vehicle now hovers at roughly $36,000. Few people can walk into a car dealership and pay such a price in cash, which means that savvy shoppers need to familiarize themselves with the financing process in order to get their dream rides. In addition to finding the perfect car or truck, buyers must spend time researching the ideal way to pay for it. Car loans are key to the car-buying process. Too often shoppers wait until they’re in the negotiating seat at the dealership before they even know what they can spend, and this can be a mistake. A poor financing deal hurts buyers over the long run and may lead to defaulting on the loan and dealing with the credit fallout that defaulting produces. Vehicle financing is a step-by-step process that should begin long before consumers even pick out a car. • Examine your spending and saving. Start by looking at your finances and

establish a budget. How much cash do you have on hand for a down payment? Also, how much can you comfortably devote to a new car payment and requisite auto insurance? You can use automotive loan calculators to get a rough idea

of what a particular car will cost you in terms of monthly payments. • Know your credit standing. Great credit will give you financing leverage. Understand your credit score and which factors may be bringing it down. Resolve

Keep tires road-worthy for safer driving METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

M

aking driving more safe can come down to ensuring that the vehicle is in good working order — starting from the ground up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that an average of 200 people die each year in tire-related crashes. In 2016, 733 people across the United States lost their lives in accidents in which tire malfunction was a contributing factor. Roughly 70 percent of single vehicle accidents are tire-related. Taking tire maintenance seriously can greatly reduce the chances of blowouts, accidents and fatalities.

Pressure should be checked at ambient temperature before driving, states AAA. The recommended inflation pressure can be found in the drivers manual or on the tire.

CHECK TIRE TREAD

MAINTAIN THE RIGHT PRESSURE

Tires rely on good tread depth to maintain traction and shed water during wet conditions. AAA recommends checking tread with a visual inspection and with the “quarter test.” Insert a quarter into a tread groove with the top of Washington’s head facing down. If the top of his head is not visible, the tires have at least 4⁄32” of tread and are acceptable for continued use. If the top of Washington’s head shows, tires need to be replaced.

Caring for tires not only improves safety, but also it extends the life of the tires, saving drivers money as a result. Michelin Tires says that simply checking the tires’ inflation pressure can make a significant difference in how long tires last. For example, a tire that is consistently 20 percent under-inflated may see its life expectancy reduced by 20 percent. Tires that are not properly inflated also can have a high rolling resistance. In such instance, the engine must expend more effort to move the vehicle — thus eating up fuel.

Check the owner’s manual for specific recommendations concerning replacing the spare tire for the vehicle. Some manufacturers state after six years, while others say 10 years is the maximum service life for tires. While most tire centers will use newly manufactured tires when replacing tires, you can double check the age of any tire by looking at the sidewall for the tire identification number (TIN), offers NHTSA. The last four digits are the week and year of manufacture.

Develop a vehicle maintenance schedule METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

T

he oft-sudden expense of vehicle repairs can throw monthly budgets into disarray. Maintaining a routine ser vice schedule is one way for drivers to keep repair costs down. The online automotive resources Edmunds.com says many car owners do not adequately prepare for scheduled maintenance, and may not give maintenance a thought until it’s too late. The first step drivers take upon purchasing a new or preowned vehicle should be to familiarize themselves with the vehicle’s owner’s manual, which is filled with valuable information and likely includes maintenance inter val recommendations. Next, drivers should learn about their vehicle, which is particularly relevant when buying a preowned vehicle. Getting to know how the car or truck rides, as well as any sounds it may make, can provide drivers with a solid foundation they can then use

to keep their cars running strong. Routine ser vice typically includes tire rotation, oil changes and topping off of fluids. So just how long between ser vice appointments can a car go? Here are some generalized estimates. • Oil change: Oil chemistr y and engine technology have improved so much that most cars can go well beyond the once-recommended 3,000 mile inter val between oil changes. Now many vehicle manufacturers recommend between 5,000 and 10,000 miles between changes, advises Edmunds. Drivers should err on the side of caution if they do a lot of stop-and-go driving and short trips. Other drivers may want to invest

in vehicles that have oil change maintenance minders built in. A light or countdown will come on the dashboard, indicating when the oil has reached the end of its usefulness. • Tire rotation: Rotating tires helps prolong the life of the tires and alleviates uneven tread and wear. During the rotation, each tire is removed and relocated to a different position to ensure that all the tires will wear evenly. Michelin Tires states that tires should be rotated around ever y six months, or between 6,000 and 8,000 miles. • Vehicle fluids: Your best bet is to see what the manufacturer recommends in regard to fluids such

as transmission fluid, differential oil, brake fluids, coolant, etc. Some transmissions need regular maintenance, while others can go 150,000 miles between changes, according to the vehicle information site The Drive. Coolant typically can last 100,000 miles. For these types of changes, it may be best to go to a mechanic or ser vice center familiar with your make and model rather than a quick-lube center, as knowing when to drain and refill can be more complicated. Ser vice schedules can be designed to adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations and drivers’ personal preferences.

Safety first when driving with pets in the car METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

M

any people can recognize the familiar image of a car traveling down the road with the head of a seemingly happy dog hanging out from the front passenger seat. Traveling in such a way may seem harmless, but doing so can be detrimental to both pets and their owners. According to Paws to Click, a community that aims to inspire pet owners to travel responsibly with their pets, allowing pets to travel in cars without employing a harness poses a significant threat to everyone in the car. The group notes that an unrestrained 75 lb. dog will exert about 2,250 lbs. of force in a crash in which the car is traveling at just 30 miles per hour. Such force can injure others in the car as well as the pet. In addition, unrestrained pets may challenge first responders in an effort to protect their owners after an accident has taken place. It makes all the sense in the world to harness pets when taking them along in the car. After all, drivers and their passengers wear seat belts, so why not provide

the same safety net to pets? But Paws to Click notes that 84 percent of dog owners drive with their dogs in the car without using restraints. This despite the fact that American Veterinary Medical Foundation

on car trips, pet owners can take these steps to ensure their pets are safe. • Don’t take pets along on car trips unless it’s absolutely necessary. It can be fun to take a pet with you everywhere, but the AVMF advises pet owners to leave their pets home when possible. Pets that are not suffering from separation anxiety will be fine at home without their owners. Pet owners whose pet owners are exhibiting signs of anxiety should address the anxiety so pets are comfortable at home alone. Taking pets everywhere is not a cure for separation anxiety. • Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature advises all pet owners to properly restrain inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets their pets before departing on a car trip, no at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the matter how short or how long that trip is car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise expected to be. In addition to properly restraining pets quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

Simple ways to prevent dog-related lawn damage METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

D

ogs love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns. Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns. In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident

until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc. Pet owners who want to let their dogs run free in the yard but don’t want damaged grass may be tempted to put their pooches in diapers or confine them to crates when letting them outside. But such an approach isn’t necessary. In fact, some simple strategies can be highly

viability of planting new grass. • Install fencing. Pet owners with expansive yards can install fencing that allows dogs to spend time exercising outdoors without granting them access to the entire property. Large dogs will need more room than small ones, but try to build fenced-in areas that allow dogs to run freely and get the exercise they need to stay healthy. • Work with a dog trainer. Dog trainers might be able to work with dogs so they only urinate in certain areas of the yard, greatly reducing the damage they can cause to a lawn. Trainers also might help curb digging and clawing behaviors that can damage lawns as well as gardens. • Consider hardscaping. Hardscaping might be most effective for pet owners with small properties. Hardscaping does not include grass and can add visual appeal to a property while saving pet owners the headaches of dealing with dogrelated lawn damage. Dogs need time outdoors, and homeowners can take various steps to protect their lawns from dog-related damage.

How to control crabgrass before it appears METRO CREATIVE CONTENT

C

rabgrass is a common problem that appears in summer. According to Lowes, crabgrass plants produce thousands of seeds between midsummer and early fall. While the first frosts of late-fall or early winter kill the crabgrass plants, the seeds produced by the plants remain dormant throughout winter and then begin to grow as the ground temperature warms up with the spring and summer thaw. As a result, controlling germination, which is the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy, is the key to preventing crabgrass from becoming an unsightly blemish that can harm your lawn in summer. A proactive approach to crabgrass can save homeowners the headaches of dealing with this unwanted guest taking over their grass. The following tips, courtesy of Lowes, can help homeowners reduce the likelihood of their lawns being overcome by crabgrass

as summer hits full swing. • Recognize that routine lawn maintenance may not be enough. Even lawns that receive sufficient TLC can fall victim to crabgrass. A proactive, crabgrassspecific approach to lawn maintenance is the most effective way to control the problem before it pops up. • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well. • Wait until the ground temperature rises above 60

F. Applying herbicides when the ground temperature is below 60 F might render the products ineffective. Gauging soil temperature can be tricky, but Lowes advises monitoring shrubs and trees on the property. Once shrubs begin to bloom and trees bud, herbicide can be applied. • Wait when treating newly seeded lawns. Preemergent herbicides might kill new grass seedlings, so homeowners with newly seeded lawns should wait until they have mowed their lawns three times before applying a herbicide. • Emphasize uniform application. If a herbicide is not applied uniformly across the lawn, crabgrass can establish itself and ultimately spread to the rest of the lawn. • Do not thatch or aerate after applying a herbicide. Thatching or aerating a lawn after applying a herbicide might break the product’s chemical barrier, thereby rendering it ineffective.

Solutions and help for small-space living BY KIM COOK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

S

etting up home in a small apartment poses all sorts of challenges. First, there’s the floorplan: With small rooms come issues like storage, and where to put the bed. Then there’s the furniture: Will it fit up the stairs, and will you need a toolbox and an engineering degree to put it together? Retailers and design services have answers. Design-your-space websites can give you accurate floor plans and helpful decor suggestions. Cleverly designed furniture is scaled for smaller footprints, and might come to the door in easy-to-assemble formats, or with assembly service as part of the package. There are now more options than ever for the diminutive nest.

THE FLOORPLAN

Sites like Modsy and Havenly give you a thorough questionnaire to pinpoint your style preferences. You can choose or attach pictures of favorite spaces, as well. Then designers will come up with a few plans from which you can choose. At Modsy, for example, you can get a 3-D rendering based on your photos and measurements. Click on furnishings throughout the layout to see if you want to buy them or switch them out for other options. You can also include pieces you already own or are thinking of getting, and your designer will position them in the plan for you. Fiona Byrne , an interior designer in New York City, says one way to tackle the challenging, long but shallow living rooms so common in the city is with space-saving furniture. “Look for narrower pieces such as console tables instead of deep credenzas, and instead of a coffee table, get end tables for either side of the sofa,” she advises. “Dualpurpose pieces are great — side tables that can double as stools when guests come over, a console table that doubles as a desk, etc. Plug-in wall sconces eliminate the need for additional side tables and don’t require any wiring. All you need is a screwdriver.” She also likes wall-mounted televisions: “People can install the cable box vertically slotted behind the TV so there’s no need for a piece of furniture under the TV.”

This photo rendering provided by Modsy shows a furnished room in a home done by the online design service. Modsy asks you to fill out a style quiz and provide a few pictures and measurements of the space you’re looking to decorate. Then a designer does several possible plans complete with furniture options.

“When I want a small space to feel larger, I keep the color palette monochromatic. The eye is less ‘distracted’ and the space feels more seamless.” “Mid-century pieces work well in tight spaces because their scale is more petite,” she says. Check out small-space collections from West Elm , Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn . Sebastian Brauer, Crate & Barrel’s vice president of product design and development, says small-apartment living is about striking a balance between function and style. “Consider pieces that contribute to a light and airy visual vibe, as well as options that maximize your vertical space,” he says. “And don’t shy away from bold color; especially if your space has limited light. Bright colors can bring warmth and energy to your space.” If you’re not quite ready to invest in furniture, consider renting it. In New York and San Francisco, Feather offers “furniture freedom”: rentals of three months or longer for couches, chairs, tables and other furnishings from name-brand furniture partners. You can renew the lease, or buy something if you fall in love with it. West Elm has just launched a partnership with Rent the Runway , where subTHE FURNISHINGS “Small spaces are tricky,” says designer scribers can choose from 26 bundles of soft furnishings for the bedroom and livAlison Pickart of Larkspur, California, who has done several apartment projects. ing room, curated by style, print, texture

Inside Weather tells you how your purchase is going to arrive — the number and weight of boxes — and how long it’s likely to take to put together. The company has a signature snap assembly feature that means a sofa can come out of its two boxes and be ready in about 10 minutes. Developments in memory foam technology have been a boon to the home shipping market. Instead of big, bulky mattresses that might not fit through apartment doorways, some companies are sending mattresses and pillows tightly rolled in compact boxes. Keeping kids’ rooms calm, colorful and tidy-ish BY MELISSA RAYWORTH ASSOCIATED PRESS

S

pring cleaning season is here, and some of us got a head start by taking Marie Kondo’s message to heart: You’ll be happier if you eliminate clutter. In many households, no room is a bigger magnet for clutter than a child’s bedroom. Designers say parents are increasingly interested in managing that clutter ef fectively — and attractively. “Ever ybody wants their house to look like a magazine and that includes the kids’ rooms,” says Los Angeles

designer Betsy Burnham. But her advice to parents: Be realistic about how you and your kids actually live. Be honest, and really ask, “Are we a tidy family? Are we too busy? Do we have too much stuf f? It’s OK if you’re not a tidy household.” Once you’ve got those answers, Burnham says, there are lots of storage options out there. Here, she and two New York-based interior designers — Deborah Martin and Fawn Galli — of fer advice on creating great kids’ bedrooms that can stay relatively clutter-free.

To create a child’s bedroom that is saturated with cheerful color and yet still remains stylish, interior designer Burnham skips the primary colors traditionally associated with kids and instead uses more sophisticated shades of dusty rose, brown, ivory & black, as seen in this bedroom shown here.

COLORFUL, YET RELAXING Galli says she hears clients talking about Kondo’s anticlutter message. But she says parents also want more restful bedrooms for their kids as a response to digital overstimulation and the pace of modern kids’ lives. She says a space can be colorful yet restful if it’s been planned with a consistent color palette and materials that work well together. Martin agrees: Choose a neutral color palette for the major design elements in the room, like furniture and wall color, she says. Then you can add pops of color through rugs, bedding and pillows. Burnham also likes the neutral palette for kids’ rooms, where, she says, it’s easy “to SEE ROOMS/PAGE 26

overdo it, and think that just because they’re kids they get a brighter palette.” Another way to create a relaxing feel for kids: Leave open play space. “To maximize their creativity and their imaginative play,” Martin says, “it’s important to have an area where they can actually play in the center of the room.”

EASY, AMPLE STORAGE All three designers mentioned the value of beds with storage underneath. Bunk beds or loft beds can be perfect, especially for smaller bedrooms. They also suggest labeling bins and baskets, especially for younger kids. A bookcase with deep shelves is perfect for holding labeled bins and baskets when children are younger, with books on higher shelves. Martin suggests considering the room from a child’s-eye view and planning storage from the ground up. Keep the most-used items where the child can easily reach them. Double rods in a child’s closet will maximize space and help keep clothing organized. For ver y young kids, you can even add dividers along the rods that specify clothing sizes, so you’ll know

Vincennes Sun-Commercial, Princeton Daily Clarion & Mount Carmel Register Friday, March 29, 2019

which ones they haven’t grown into yet. Keep your child’s habits in mind: Some kids will fold their clothing Kondo-style and tuck it neatly into drawers. If yours won’t, choose bins or baskets where items like socks and under wear can easily be tossed and kept sorted.

TIMELESS STYLE To keep a child’s room from having a “kiddie” vibe that they’ll quickly outgrow, Burnham suggests avoiding primar y colors. Also, keep desks and dresser tops relatively clear, Galli says, to keep the space feeling calm and more organized. “It’s a clean canvas,” she says, “to just start fresh at whatever your next project is.” That might be easier to achieve by having less space rather than more: Desks don’t have to be large, Martin says, since many kids end up doing homework or projects at a kitchen table. A big desk in a bedroom can end up being a multipurpose space where a range of things quickly piles up. One last bit of advice: Involve kids, especially older ones, in designing a space that fits their personalities. Have it reflect their hobbies and interests, and add items like a wall rail where they can post things like a rotating display of photos. If your child has his or her heart set on a wild wall color, Martin says, it may be worth going for it. You can always repaint in a couple of years.

Betsy Burnham via AP

In nurseries and bedrooms for younger kids, storage space is always needed. A fabric skirt attached beneath a crib, as shown in this nursery by interior designer Betsy Burnham, creates a storage space that’s close at hand but hidden from view.

Current trends in front-porch decorating BY KIM COOK ASSOCIATED PRESS

B

ack in the days before TV and air conditioning lured people indoors, Americans often hung out on front porches, enjoying the fresh air and socializing with neighbors. In later decades, when they wanted to relax outside, people tended to do it in the backyard, away from noise and traffic. But according to the National Association of Home Builders, the front porch is coming back. On renovation projects, the association says, adding or enclosing a porch is among the most common requests. In a 2016 survey, the group found that front porches were included in about 65 percent of new home builds, up from about 40 percent 20 years earlier. So what are some decor options for this small but social spot? “Comfortable seating is an important part of any front porch,” says Jenny Reimold of the Nashville, Tennesseebased design firm Whim & Willow, and a style expert for the retailer HomeGoods. She suggests a traditional outdoor bench or classic Adirondack chairs in a fun color like teal. Place a rug to anchor the seating area and provide

comfort underfoot, she says. “The rug should be roughly 2 feet wider than your seating arrangement.” A rug is also a good way to bring more pattern and color to the porch, when you may not have much room for decorative elements. No matter how much space you’ve got to work with, try to coordinate front-porch decor with your interiors for a cohesive look indoors and out. Retailers are offering lots of options. For example, if your style is contemporary, Target ‘s neutral-hued Project 62 abstract outdoor rugs, lumbar pillows, club chairs and string lights would blend nicely. The new line, which includes indoor décor, was inspired by Target’s year of inception, 1962. Also at Target, the rustic farmhouse vibe, currently popular indoors, can be brought to the porch. Galvanized steel pots can hold real or faux greenery. Smith & Hawken’s Montpelier collection provides deep, comfy Sunbrella cushions in chunky, whitewashed, eucalyptus-wood frames. Or for narrower porches, Opalhouse’s outdoor wicker chairs may be worth a look. Those who live near water might like the crisp coastal vibe of all-weather wicker seating in creamy

white with blue cushions, tied in with starfish, stripe or lattice patterned outdoor rug, and navy ceramic planters. And for boho decor fans, there are patterned terracotta planters, folk-arty floral rugs, fruity-hued and fringed toss pillows, and woven furniture. Want a swinging seat, but don’t have a beam to hang it from? Consider Casaza’s freestanding swing chair, with a sturdy powder-coated frame holding an all-weather rattan seat with a plush cushion. Also here, a selection of ceramic or cement stools with unusual painted or textured finishes. If you have no electrical outlet handy, you can still illuminate your front-porch seating area with battery-powered or solar lighting. IKEA ‘s new Solvinden solar collection includes string lights as well as table and floor lights, with beachy stripe or polkadot patterns. “Outdoor lanterns are essential elements for any outdoor space because they’re not only functional but versatile,” says Reimold. “They can be used with a variety of home styles, from coastal to farmhouse to traditional. Lanterns also transition well from summer to fall, making them a great purchase for year-round decorating.” You’ll find whitewashed wood ones at HomeGoods, and Wayfair has a broad range of metal, ceramic or wood options. Use battery-operated pillar candles that can be tapped on and off with a remote control, for safety and convenience. Terrain ‘s Wildfire pillar offers a realistic flickering flame, and can be handily recharged with a USB cord.
