INTRODUCTION

STORY OF HEIDELBERG

Heidelberg station is the point of transition which connects a number of different areas such as: hospital, a public park, and its surrounding residential areas. This place has only the station as its main public transportation into the city. Heidelberg station is strategically situated in between both nature, public buildings and transportation infrastructure. There are contrasting areas in the form of a main road which is located on the same level as the station’s ground floor. This area is extremely shaded by the medium to tall sized trees and vegetation in and around the park. This makes the transitional space to become a very ideal space for visitors and commuters who want to reach the station or its adjacent places such as schools.

One of the most positive element of the area is its natural environment which is very rich and beautiful,if compared to most of other areas near it. The abundance of trees create a natural shading which enhances the temperature of the spaces on the ground as well as creating a wonderful ecosystem. However, due to the high frequency of acitivities that occur in this area, it has created problems which absolutely need to be adressed. On of them is the lack of facility for pedestrians. This is caused by the fluctuated contoursof the terrain as it has some areas with a very extreme slope. This condition makes the ramp access inevitably bad and unergonomic. Also, the tunnel which has uncomfortable turns makes it very unberable, especially for the eldery to move around. These conditions simply cause a lot of discomforts and inefficiencies for pedestrian and commuters. This is made worse by the fact that there are many underdeveloped spots such as the park which simply screams: “mis-opportunity. The area should really take advantage of these all to create a more useful place for its surrounding residents.

the main idea is trying to create a series of connection between 3 particular points, hospital, station, and park by enhancing human experience such as ergonomic path, human friendly materials and innovative functional element. it is formed by typology of transition space such which includes additional functions in order to increase physical connection and become experience connection. furthermore, the movement of pedestrian becomes the main focus of the connection, where people starts their journey in this area to reach other place using different paths.

Based on site observations, I discover several issues that needs to be addressedin order to make a truly impactful change positively to the site. What is very interesting here is the relationship between contrating and seemingly different places. Especially on the movement of pedestrians in which the existing ramp has a very poor quality. It needs to rethink the connection that it has with all the surrounding points around Heidelberg station and especially the movement of pedestrians as the primary user of the space.

SITE ANALYSIS

CONTOUR ANALYSIS KEYWORDS : CONNECTION - CLIFF POTENTIAL : VERTICAL CONNECTION - PEDESTRIAN SLOPE

Hidelberg station is located in dinamic contour shape which brings opportunities to explore the SKIN that will be attached to the contour. Therefore, it is nessesary to engage with contour and slope analysis in order to understand the existing surface of the site. there are two main users that are targeted in design development, pedestrian and disable people. based on design assessability guide line, the footpath gradient of the pedestrian path is 1 : 20 with the maximal distance landing is 15 m. furthermore, it is nessesary to create a level landing as the transitition between the footpath. this information give benefits to futher design process in order to create ergonomic path for both users. meanwhile, based on contour analysis of existing site, the range of slope are between 1 :5 to 1 : 19. For that reason, the existing slope will be revised by considering the design assessability guide line.

VISUAL ANALYSIS KEYWORDS : CONNECTION - TRASITION POTENTIAL : VISUAL EXPERIENCE

there are two main of sense analysis that are explored, visual and texture. the aim of visual analysis are in order to understand the distance amount of visual level in each spot and which spots that give best prespective of hiedelberg scenery. This analysis creates a picture of different spots with very potential visual experiences when pedestrians are in the spots such as park area (A), cars’ high way area (L, and from above the hospital (I) where it has the most elevated viewing angle. However, there are also spots which give a narrower viewing angle such as tunnels (B, C) and stairway into the hospital (G, H) which is ofte used by pedestrians, hence the need to improve its quality.

TEXTURE ANALYSIS KEYWORDS : MATERIAL POTENTIAL : HUMAN COMFORT

the texture analysis is looking of the materials that are repesented on hiedelberg surrounding. it is started with the dynamic texture of the park that are created from ecological nature. we can find sample of softscapes such as grass, plenty of trees and flowers surrounding the park. the path itself is combination between the concrete as ramp and metal as hand rail or boundary of path. the shape of trees are dominant in this area that creates shade through the sunlight

DESIGN PROGRAM

DESIGN CONCEPT CON[TOUR]NECTION

pedestrian experince in this site becomes the main issue on heidelberg station. it is established that creating a new movement for the pedestrian by considering the context of site itself, will merge the quality of experience for pedestrian. by utilizing the advantage of site, based on the finding in slope analysis, path analysis, and sense analysis including visual and texture analysis, create a new design that can not only functional for people surrounding but also innovate a new skin that related to context of heidelberg that give interaction to the community.

SITE CONTOUR AS CONTEXT KEYWORDS : PATH - SLOPE - VEGETATION POTENTIAL : SMART (CONTOUR BASED) SKIN

The site is chosen because it has Heidelberg’s unique characteristic: its gradually descending contours from the train station into the park. This site can connect the station area with the parking area which is situated on different elevation levels. By observing the existing ramp access, we can see that pedestrians must walk along and around the tunnel in order to reach the elevation level of the station where its slope is not very ergonomic. So, by taking advantages of the site’s contour as the main context, the designcan be made byinventing a pathway that is as ideal as possible for pedestrians.

39

DESIGN FUNCTION KEYWORDS : VERTICAL CIRCULATION - TRANSITION ACTIVIES

The main goal for the design is to create a new space on pedestrian areas which are as ergonomic and functional as possible. This is done by taking a huge concern toward the slope. The existing path can used as reference, in which it is currently too long with uncomfortable sloping angles. So, the site needs a path with a very ergonomic ramp as well as creating shortcut as an alternative pathway for pedestrians. Aside form this, by taking Heidelberg as the context for transitional space, there needs to be a new function for the space, especially a space where pedestrians can wait and spen some casual time on the site,as well as a better interconnectedness between the hospital and surrounding community where the site can truly be enjoyed as a public green park.

The chosen site is an underdeveloped space which is situated in between the park and train station. Form exploration is started by taking advantage of the fluctuated levels of the site, and also by considering its main purpose as pedestrian path. The slopy terrain actually inspires the creation of a new skin as the process of unifying this new skin design and the site. So, making the new skin becomes a playful design process, all initiated by the early sketches. There are three initial ideas for the form exploration: horizontal, vertical and the combination of both. The result of this process gave me a better understanding that directing a new form on the site is very sesnsitive to the context of its existing contour, as it completely cover it with a brand new structure.

FORM EXPLORATION

KEYWORDS : CONTOUR - SLOPE POTENTIAL : ERGONOMIC YET PLAYFUL PATH

Based on initial sketches, there are 2 forms that are developed further in order to generate the ideal skin design that is both good looking and higly contextual. The first design tries to break the skin into horizontally. This creates many horizontal slices on the skin which will be benficial toward when putting the function of a path into it. Moreover, the horizontal skin also divides spaces on the slope parts which can be used for transitional activities. The form consists of a series of curves which are unified one surface, then divided vertically with consistent thickness in order to create this flat looking skin.

Moreover, the site exploration in which it is sliced vertically makes a dinamic impression, where the newly made profiles connect differently elevated levels. This form also shows a continuity between horizontal profile lines which can be used as a path. The skin that is created here from the vertical lines can make new fucntions and textures on the design.

DIGITAL FABRICATION

FINDING THE FORM KEYWORDS : CURVE - CONTOUR POTENTIAL : FLUCTUATIVE SURFACE

Creation of the from is begun by making series of curves in which each curve represents a path activity that is proposed onto the site. Curves that are either low or medium can be used as pathway if each of them is connected, meanwhile the high curve can be sde to support the activity and function of a seating area. So, the newly formed skin which consists of many arranged curves can produce a form that is dinamic and fluctuative.

DESIGN THE SKIN KEYWORDS : FLUCTUATIVE SURFACE POTENTIAL : SMART SKIN

Furthermore, after learning that the intended surface can be formed out of a group of unified curves, the making of this form is continued by connecting it with its main function;as a pathway. Fabricaion technique that is employed here is by laser cutting technique through using MDF (medium-density-fibreboard).This form is also made through series of curves which are tighly arranged adjacently in order to create a path that is smooth when it is assembled all at the same time. Moreover, the shape of the curve is done with a concern over the slope’s ergonomy. So, the transisition that occurs in between pieces of curves will make the impression of a unified waves.

50

51

EXPLORE THE MATERIAL KEYWORDS : TEXTURE - VISUAL ANALYSIS POTENTIAL : HUMAN EXPERIENCE WITH THE SKIN

After completing the exploration with laser cutting technique, I do a form exploration with the appropriate material for the design; concrete. In order to print it into form, requires a molding technique in which the case is made to be filled with liquid cement. So, by using the previously created form, the molding form can be made by employing the vaccum molding technique using PET plastic material. After the molding case it done, liquidcement is then poured into the case by filling each of the curve surface. This technique requires 2 day time until the concrete is completely dry and can be separated from its molding case. The result of this technique is the skin that is intended from the creation of the unified curves. So that the gradation of the form can work optimally as well as the function of the design to be applied into the form.

FINAL DESIGN

MASTER PLAN The main concept of the materplan is to create a conneection in between points by designingn a good transition space for the users. This transistional space can be made in the form of a path, activity center or evena bridge that connects a number of different areas through a continuous skin. Each of the areas is divided into a number of designs that are contextual to the Heidelberg contour, so that the newly made skin can completely integrate with the nature. My design is a vertical pathway that coonects to different levels: the bublic par and car park. The design provides an alternative route for pedestrians who go into the places such as the station or the hospital.

SECTION the main focus of each design is creating a comfort pathway for pedestrian that are enhancing human experience in physical qualities and phycologies qualities. they are functional design which considere with ergonomic slope and put visual and texture experience to each component of design. the typology of design starts with vertical path from the park to connect park level to train station level without using tunnel. then it continous on intermodal pathway with multi-functional space that are connected to teh carpark. after that, it has vertical bridge that allows the pedestrian to go up without taking existing ramp.

CON[TOUR]NECTION CON[TOUR]NECTION is a pathway design that is inspired by the slope and the natural contour of the site as its main context to create a SMART skin with dinamic surface and pattern. The latter is shown by using different materials which represent the purpose of the design, which is to enhance human experience. This design tries to engage with the natural context while still demonstrating a solid new form. This can potentially makes a multifunctionalspace for the users and the surrounding community.

DESIGN FORMING Forming design is started by giving the main function into the site: as a pathway which connects the public park with the car park. The differencein levels in between the two becomes potential for making the skin. Based on form exploration and digital fabrication that is done previously, this form is created through series of curves which produce a gradual pathway from the public park level to the car park level. The skin continues by considering the existing conditino such as the trees, to create a tree canopy within the design. Aside from that, the form is also divided into a number of functions by adding new materials like concrete as the form’s main element, wood to indicate stair area, and also the dinamic vegetation.

The program of function that is offered in the design is not only about vertical pathway, it is also a multifunctional space to attract people for gathering and enjoy the natural scenery of heidelberg. In order for that to happen, there is a vegetation design that is programmed for permaculture. Permaculture ‘Consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs’[1]. he permaculture vision of permanent or sustainable agriculture has evolved to one of permanent or sustainable culture. So, the surrounding community of Heidelberg can visit the site to enjoy their natural produce. Smart Skin Studio - Master of Design Innovation and Technology

The 6000-sqm TUMO Park is an outdoor extension to the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies in Yerevan, Armenia. The project connects the TUMO building to an existing public municipal park through a plaza that currently surrounds a fountain built during the soviet era. The concentric setting of the fountain dictates the radial shape of the lower plateau. The plaza materializes through a geometrical three-dimensional abstraction of the existing topography by connecting the abstracted vertices, forming inclined triangular solid planes. The new landscape consists of variations of oblique surfaces and includes epoxy-painted concrete facets, grass, decks, and water beds, among other elements.

DATA DOCUMENTATION 1. FARO FOR point cloud data

2. Site Analysis using Grasshoper Plug-in

One of the activities in studio SMART skin is data documentation by usinf a 3d scanner. FARO Laser Scanners provide surveyors a safe alternative to quickly scan busy work sites under challenging and rough conditions [1]. Although, the site location of Heidelberg possesses a contour that is descending, so it is difficult to fully comprehend the locations in the working drawings. This is where 3d scanner can really help documenting site which is very complex to draw manuallly. The result of the 3d scanner is in the form of point cloud that can be processed into an analysis and working drawing in order to insert the new design into it.

After collecting the field data through the 3d scanner, we can use point cloud to generate the site analysis by using grasshopper on rhino program. The analysis consists of environmental analysissuch as sun analysis, radiation, to even human comfort analysis. The result that is obtained with this program can be in the form of diagram which describes the field condition with certain parameter dimensions.

3. Rhino - Grasshoper Modelling workshop In order to create a Smart Skin that has spesific parameter of design, we use Rhino - Grasshoper as a tool to represent the shape. it helps to demonstrate the surface of the design from a single curve to series of skin that are created based on the function. this tools also helps to understand the possibilities of iteration without changing the parameter. the result of rhino modelling reflect flexibilities of the Smart Skin.

PERMACULTURE Permaculture One, is ‘Consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs. People, their buildings and the ways in which they organise themselves are central to permaculture. Thus the permaculture vision of permanent or sustainable agriculture has evolved to one of permanent or sustainable culture. More precisely permaculture is a “design system based on ecological principles” (see below) which provides the organising framework for implementing the above vision. In this more limited, but important sense it draws together the diverse skills and ways of living which need to be rediscovered and developed to empower us to move from being dependent consumers to becoming responsible producers.

1. Mulberries

2. Comfrey

3. Moringa

In this sense, permaculture is not the landscape, or even the skills of organic gardening, sustainable farming, energy efficient building or eco-village development as such, but can be used to design, establish, manage and improve these and all other efforts made by individuals, households and commIunities towards a sustainable future. The permaculture way with plants is to find garden participants that have good symbiotic relationships with others. We look for perennial plants so that we don’t have to tirelessly cultivate them year after year. We also want to find multiple functions for what’s growing: medicine, food, fodder, shade, mulch, windbreaks, ground cover, shade and much more. The range of activities that arise from a Permaculture lifestyle includes growing food.

4. red clover

Mulberries are sweet and delicious but have not made a splash commercially because they damage easily. The trees grow strong and large very quickly, with a nice spread of branches that provide good habitat for wildlife. comfrey is the darling of many a permaculture farm. While not edible (it has been linked to liver damage), this plant has long been beloved for medicinal qualities but has made even more of a reputation for its positive influence on other plants. Moringa is another fast-growing tree, with a fast-growing reputation as a superfood. it is a perennial legume tree, so it continually and naturally fixes the soil with nitrogen, the main component of most fertilizers. The tree also continually regenerates after being pruned, and it is amazingly drought-resistant. Red clover is good for the soil and provides what other food-producing plants need to put out a good harvest.
